In this fully animated, all-new take on the Smurfs, a mysterious map sets Smurfette and her friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting race through the Forbidden Forest leading to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: The Smurfs get a soft reboot after experiencing a case of sequelitis back in 2013, when The Smurfs 2 made half as much money as the 2011 hit. Maybe it's just our age, but this particular adventure seems to have an Amblin Entertainment feel to it, which might make for a welcome surprise for parents.

Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, three lifelong pals risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money.

The Buzz: If you've ever watched "Scrubs" (and if you haven't, you need to get on that, stat), you've doubtless come to appreciate the winsome and totally not intimidating comedic instincts of Zach Braff. And if you've ever followed his exploits further, you'll remember the charming, thoughtful, delicious work he did in helming 2000's Garden State. Which is why I am (and you should be) excited by his latest project, a remake of a '70s-era gem of a heist comedy. In the 2017 version, Braff leads a venerable triumvirate of Oscar-winning acting legends, who play a trio of retirees afflicted with more-than-a-pill-bottle's-worth of crust ... and bad judgment. - Bret

Gloria is an out-of-work party girl forced to leave her life in New York City, and move back home. When reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, she gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this phenomenon.

The Buzz: Anne Hathaway is figuratively huge in South Korea in Nacho Vigalondo's bonkers-sounding sci-fi comedy that's received heaps of praise for its originality, daring, and ability to stick the landing. I have a feeling people will be talking about this movie well into the summer, and hope it makes certain audiences reconsider Hathaway's appeal. - Arno

Alive and Kicking gives the audience an intimate, insider's view into the culture of the current swing dance world while shedding light on issues facing modern society.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: What we love about Susan Glatzer's documentary: It doesn't seem as concerned with emphasizing swing-dance culture's relevance years after its late 90s revival; instead, it spotlights a series of individuals whose lives have been positively affected by moving their bodies to this particular beat.

Certificate R   -   Biography | Drama

A historical drama traces the lifelong friendship between two renowned 19th century French artists - painter Paul Cézanne (Guillaume Gallienne) and writer Emile Zola (Guillaume Canet) - from their first meeting as schoolmates to their creative rivalry as fame and success continue to elude Cézanne.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: The new movie from director Danièle Thompson (Avenue Montaigne) was on the Best Foreign Language Oscar shortlist but lost its spot to Elle, but the thought of Guillaume Canet (we still love Tell No One) and Guillaume Gallienne (who really won us over as Pierre Bergé in Yves Saint Laurent) could keep art-house theaters full for a couple months.

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama

Frank, a single man raising his child prodigy niece Mary, is drawn into a custody battle with his mother.
Director:

The Buzz: Chris Evans' desire to make hard-hitting dramas outside of the MCU continues with this Marc Webb-directed take on the matter of single parenting. The Black List script by Tom Flynn was performed in 2015 at a relatively new live-reading event that celebrates these as-yet-unproduced scripts on the stage in an attempt to get more momentum behind them.

Certificate R   -   Crime | Drama

A film about compromises and the implications of the parent's role.
Director:

The Buzz: Years ago I argued with an acquaintance about Cristian Mungiu's 4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days to the point where we still don't talk much. I believe that Mungiu is a masterful director who has rallied a band of post-Communist filmmakers around Eastern Europe and his storytelling messages are often more optimistic than they might appear on first viewing. Scratching Graduation's surface, the story is about the lengths a father goes to to help his university-bound daughter get out of Romania for a better life in the UK, and there's plenty of critical argument around whether the tale is just brutal or more brutally honest, with a nod to the current and future generations of Romanians to smash the state.

A former secretary, newly appointed as a scriptwriter for propaganda films, joins the cast and crew of a major production while the Blitz rages around them.

The Buzz: Lone Scherfig (An Education) is back with a war drama that has a bit more grit under its nails than you might expect from a crowd-pleaser, as well as a true-to-life look at how movie effects were created in the early days. Quite simply, it's a movie for film-lovers.

The Buzz: This body swap animation has already proven an enormous success in its native Japan, where it has scored the second largest takings for a domestic film, behind Spirited Away, and the fourth largest ever, behind Titanic and Frozen. Now US audiences have chance to find out what all the fuss is about. - Michael

The Buzz: Dominic Toretto has turned evil in the latest Fast and Furious outing, and it's up to his family to take him down. Though with Letty having gone rogue due to amnesia back in Fast & Furious 6, you have to wonder why folks aren't immediately calling "mind control." I'm just looking forward to gravity defying car chases, Charlize Theron as the baddie, Jason Statham's addition to the bad-ass brawling bald guys roster and whatever that cars vs. submarine showdown in the Russian tundra is. Take my money. - Vanessa

A true-life drama, centering on British explorer Col. Percival Fawcett, who disappeared while searching for a mysterious city in the Amazon in the 1920s.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: I became a fan of writer/director James Gray's work when I saw his excellent film, Two Lovers. His follow-up, the 2013 period drama The Immigrant, cemented his reputation as a master craftsman. With The Lost City of Z, Gray unveils his most ambitious project yet. The film, which Gray describes as "David Lean but with a slightly more hallucinogenic feel," tells the amazing true story of Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), a British explorer who disappeared in the Amazon jungle in 1925 while searching for an ancient lost city. Filmed on location in Colombia, The Lost City of Z promises a return to the grand-scale adventure filmmaking of the '60s. - Matt

The Buzz: Richard Gere is earning some of the strongest reviews of his career for his portrayal of a small-time political operator in New York City. Getting as much attention is writer/director Joseph Cedar, who reappears five years after his Best Foreign Language Oscar nomination for Footnote. Don't be surprised if this release sticks around until summer.

Both a biopic of a complicated man and an exploration of the gathering forces that converged to shape a new American cuisine and create the cult of "celebrity chef"... A consummate hedonist, Jeremiah Tower's career spans the riotous sexual revolution of the 70's to the high rolling "greed-is-good" spirit of the '80s. Key interviews with celebrities & celebrity chefs cement Tower's influence on today's food culture and reveal how he transformed the restaurant industry and in the process changed the way we eat.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: I could likely spend the greater part of my waking life watching food-related documentaries -- thanks, in great part, to my fascination with the larger-than-life, salty-yet-so-sweet chefs who populate our culinary imaginations (not to mention our streaming playlists and cooking networks). The fact that personal hero and legitimate badass Anthony Bourdain has served as producer of this portrait of Tower, a titan among chefs well before the advent of our celebrity cooking culture, officially pathologizes my eagerness to learn more about a revered and little-understood cooking genius. There's little question this documentary will whet my viewing appetite. Only thing left to figure out? What to nosh and sip on when the lights go down. — Bret

The story of American poet Emily Dickinson from her early days as a young schoolgirl to her later years as a reclusive, unrecognized artist.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: My joy at seeing one of my closest imaginary friends brought to life on screen is not unmixed. I'm worried that her screen avatar will shatter some of my ideas about her. I also wonder what the woman who wrote the lines "How dreary to be somebody/ How public, like a frog/ To tell one's name the livelong day/ To an admiring bog" would say about having her voice amplified. - Kiran

In every generation, a torch passes from father to son. And that timeless dynamic is the beating heart of Tommy's Honour - an intimate, powerfully moving tale of the real-life founders of the modern game of golf.
Director:

The Buzz: Up-and-coming actor Jack Lowden shares the screen with Peter Mullan and his woolly beard in Jason Connery's most high profile project to date. Connery has received credit for working a wry sense of humor into his script and for giving female characters equal presence in what could easily have been a man's world.

A woman sets out to make life hell for her ex-husband's new fiancée.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Smart move on Katherine Heigl's part to embrace her dark side on screen. If she's being super-savvy about her career moves at this point, maybe this script has a Fatal Attraction design that makes the audience feel a bit of empathy for Heigl's character, though we imagine most anyone who's interested in seeing this movie really wants to see how Rosario Dawson will dispose of her opponent.

Venturing into the wilds of China, "Born in China" captures intimate moments with a panda and her growing cub, a young golden monkey who feels displaced by his baby sister, and a mother snow leopard struggling to raise her two cubs.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Despite the advances of technology and global diplomacy that have bridged the divides among nations, China remains, for too many, an enigmatic and comparatively little understood part of the world. This title, the first such Chinese-made feature documentary for the Disneynature label, will undoubtedly delight viewers predisposed to a universal appreciation for nature and wildlife, in addition to helping demystify a country that is home to undeniably glorious species. Veteran director Chuan Lu sets his focus on a panda bear and her cub, a pair of sibling golden monkeys, and a heroic mother snow leopard. This, you can be sure, makes for essential Earth Day viewing. - Bret

20 years after three teenagers disappeared in the wake of mysterious lights appearing above Phoenix, Arizona, unseen footage from that night has been discovered, chronicling the final hours of their fateful expedition.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: This found footage thriller has the backing of Ridley Scott and a solid screenwriter in T.S. Nowlin. Even though it works our nerves a bit with the three teenagers/Blair Witch set up, we're suckers for anything in the alien invasion/government conspiracy realm.

Certificate R   -   Action | Comedy | Crime | Thriller

Set in Boston in 1978, a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two gangs turns into a shootout and a game of survival.
Director:

The Buzz: An awesome cast, a whip-smart script, one location, and guns… lots of guns. That's Free Fire in a nutshell, the story of an arms deal gone wrong that sparks a feature-length shootout. The line-up includes Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, and Armie Hammer who fire just as many one-liners at each other as they do shots. Fans of director Ben Wheatley's work can also expect his trademark combination of stylish filmmaking and visceral violence. I was lucky enough to visit the set and saw one actor actually get his head run-over. Don't believe me? It's in the film and not a camera trick. Ask me nicely and I might tell you how they did it. - Michael

The Buzz: This true story of a Finnish boxer who had a shot at the 1962 World Featherweight title just missed out being shortlisted for Oscar nomination and had been backed by critics since winning a major prize at last year's Cannes Film Festival. If you think you've seen it all before with boxing movies, think again and take the chance of seeing this black-and-white marvel on the big screen. - Michael

A woman lands a dream job at a powerful tech company called the Circle, only to uncover an agenda that will affect the lives of all of humanity.
Director:

The Buzz: Writer Dave Eggers is known for his seductive stories of virtuous loners taking on evil systems. The Circle is a high-tech, big-budget version of the wonted Eggers fable. This is a movie very much of our moment, tapping into the things we celebrate - inspiring Ted-esque talks, women in tech, knowledge sharing - as well as the things we fear - corporate overreach, universal surveillance, and the loss of privacy and individual freedom. - Kiran

A young street magician (Jacob Latimore) is left to care for his little sister after their parents passing, and turns to illegal activities to keep a roof over their heads. When he gets in too deep, his sister is kidnapped, and he is forced to use his magic and brilliant mind to save her.
Director:

The Buzz: I'm unsure if I'll be charmed or duped by this Jason Blum-backed indie drama that flirts with the superhero world and features well-received performances by Jacob Latimore and Dulé Hill. I do know that I tend to gravitate toward under-the-radar movies that have mixed reviews, and Sleight has them to spare. Also, director J.D. Dillard has been eyed to potentially handle the long-gestating remake of The Fly as this movie has generated some attention. - Arno
