Brian Cox and Anna Maxwell Martin to star in MPs' expenses drama

8 December 2009 11:13 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Satirical BBC film to tell story of freedom of information campaigner Heather Brooke

He is perhaps best known for his roles as Hannibal Lecter in the movie Manhunter and a scheming CIA boss in the Bourne films.

Now the Dundee-born actor Brian Cox is to take on a role rather closer to home, playing fellow Scot Michael Martin, the former Speaker of the House of Commons, in a forthcoming BBC satirical drama about MPs' expenses affair.

Martin, who was forced to resign in May over his handling of what became the biggest political scandal for years, fought to keep details of MPs' expenses out of public view.

After the Daily Telegraph revealed a litany of questionable claims amid a public outcry, he stepped down from the Speaker's chair, quit his Glasgow seat and has since been ennobled as Lord Martin of Springburn.

Decade in Review: 2000 Top Ten

5 November 2009 1:07 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

What follows is my original top ten list of 2000... or rather the revised version I published in 2002. Let's discuss each year of this decade as it winds down! Who's with me?!? It's always interesting to see which films remained at the forefront of our memory and which fade... both for a variety of reasons, quality being only one factor. New comments are in red.

Please note: This list was based on NYC release dates in the year 2000. Some movies are listed as different years at the IMDb based on when they were released in their home country or in La or whatnot.

Runners Up (in descending order): Une Liaisons Pornographique, Nurse Betty, You Can Count On Me, Before Night Falls, Pola X, Chicken Run, American Psycho, Wonder Boys and Billy Elliott Um... What The Hell are some of these movies doing outside the top ten list? You Can Count on Me »

David Duchovny Keen on Another X-Files Movie

22 October 2009 10:15 AM, PDT | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Despite poor box office and generally “meh” critical reviews and mostly indifferent moviegoer word of mouth, David Duchovny insists there is still an audience for another “X-Files” movie. The audience is out there, if you will. Ahem. In an interview with The Daily Beast, Duchovny breaks down his current thought process on another potential “X-Files” movie: “As far as the X-Files movie I’d like to do next, if we get a chance to do it, would be a return to the heart and soul of the mythology, which is the alien-oriented conspiracy. I think it’s natural for The X-Files to have another movie in 2012, so we’ll see if we get to do it.” He defends last year’s widely panned I Want to Believe, as well as the polarizing last few seasons of the television run: “I was happy with it… I have nothing but respect for »

David Duchovny hopes for third X-Files movie in 2012

21 October 2009 10:27 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

In August, X-Files star Gillian Anderson said she would be happy to reprise her role as agent Dana Scully in a third X-Files movie and suggested that it was already in the early stages of development

The good news today is that co-star David Duchovny - currently playing sex-obsessed novelist Hank Moody in the TV series Californication - has confirmed he is also willing to return as Fox Mulder.

There have so far been two feature film spin-offs from the hit TV series: Fight the Future in 1998 and last year's I Want to Believe.

Earlier speculation said that the next movie would focus on the 2012 alien invasion revealed in the final episode of the TV series, where Mulder and Scully learned the event was foretold in the Mayan calendar.

Duchovny had last year expressed a hope for further films and he has now told The Daily Beast: "As far as »

Duchovny Looks To X-Files 3

20 October 2009 11:32 PM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

With The X Files: I Want to Believe having done okay at the box office last year and fans calling for more of Agents Mulder and Scully, David Duchovny (Agent Fox Mulder to the uninitiated) has been talking about the possibility of a third X-Files film.

The original X-Files series, which ran from 1993 to 2002 made global stars of Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, making global stars of the pair. Duchovny has since gone on to find television fame once more with the character Hank Moody in the Showtime original series Californication, but could there really be a third film, does The X-Files still have a story to tell?

David Duchovny Wants 'X-Files' Movie For 2012

20 October 2009 9:08 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

David Duchovny still wants a third X-Files movie, having achieved peace with the impact his character of Fox Mulder had on his life and career. You'll remember, Duchovny wanted to stop shooting the show in Vancouver in favor of Los Angeles, and he and Gillian Anderson both kind of walked away from the series (and the first film) not looking back.

But the cast and creator Chris Carter reunited to make X-Files: I Want to Believe, which was a bit of a letdown, even though it had a modest budget allowing the film to become profitable. So a third movie, now that everyone is re-invested in the lore of the original series, seems inevitable.

Duchovny for X-Files 3

Mulder and Scully are both ready for X-Files 3. While no official announcements have been made for the film, David Duchovny would proudly be up for it. The only thing that I can recall being said was during an interview with Gillian Anderson that we reported about back in August. They were saying that 3 was being prepped and would film in 2012. Unfortunately we haven't heard anything about it since then. Duchovny thinks that 2012 would be perfect, "As far as the X-Files movie I.d »

David Duchovny Talks X-Files 3

20 October 2009 12:21 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Fans of The X-Files have been discussing a possible third film in the science fiction series since the release of last year’s much-maligned I Want To Believe. While no concrete news has yet been released, it would appear that all of the principals are on board to return for a third big-screen X-Files adventure.

The latest person to talk up X-Files 3 is Fox Mulder himself - David Duchovny.

Duchovny recently spoke with The Daily Beast and stated that (like most fans) he would like the next film to tackle the 2012 mythology within the hit show.

Duchovny said:

“As far as the X-Files movie I’d like to do next, if we get a chance to do it, would be a return to the heart and soul of the mythology, which is the alien-oriented conspiracy. I think it’s natural for The X-Files to have another movie in 2012, so we »

'X-Files 3' in 2012?

19 October 2009 9:40 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

'X-Files' fans know the significance of the year 2012: It’s the final date of the Mayan Calendar, and according to the TV show’s folklore, it’s when alien colonization is supposed to begin.

So what about a new 'X-Files' movie that year, too...

David Duchovny, who played FBI agent and conspiracy nut Fox Mulder in the popular series, was recently quoted in Moviehole as saying he’d like to see it happen. "As far as the X-Files movie I’d like to do next, if we get a chance to do it, would be a return to the heart and soul of the mythology, which is the alien-oriented conspiracy. I think it’s natural for The X-Files to have another movie in 2012, so we’ll see if we get to do it."

Now fans just need Fox to green-light the film, and for Gillian Anderson, who played Agent Scully, »

Anderson, Cox & Sutherland Sign On For ‘Moby Dick’

29 September 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The $25 million made-for-tv adaptation of Herman Melville’s iconic tale, Moby Dick, has added Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Charlie Cox (Stardust) and Donald Sutherland (It’s Donald Sutherland) to their already talented cast. As we’ve previously reported, William Hurt and Ethan Hawke have already signed on to star as the obsessive Captain Ahab (Hurt) and his unruly first officer, Starbuck (Hawke).

With Moby Dick being the most expensive production to date for Tele Munchen Group (Tmg), they’re leaving nothing to chance. Nigel Williams has penned the script with Mike Barker directing. Barker is best known for directing the critically acclaimed, Sea Wolf, while Williams famously wrote the script for the award-winning 2005 miniseries, Elizabeth I. Both Sea Wolf and Elizabeth I are Tmg productions.

Being a fan of the HBO series, Elizabeth I, and I’m interested in seeing what Williams will do with Melville’s novel. While I »

Donald Sutherland and Gillian Anderson Join William Hurt for TV Moby Dick

28 September 2009 9:57 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

It's rare that I look at a TV project and wish that it were a $100m theatrical production instead of a much smaller television affair. I like seeing what creative teams can do with ingenuity rather than money, so almost never think something should be more expensive. But I do wish the $25m television version of Moby Dick, currently shooting, had more cash to work with. Oceangoing stories look amazing on the big screen, and we get so few of them. Still, with the cast assembled for this version of Herman Melville's novel, I'll take what I can get. The first two big names to be cast were William Hurt, playing Melville's vengeful and immediately archetypical Captain Ahab. Ethan Hawke is his first officer Starbuck, the classic audience identifcation character who has the temerity to say, "uh, Ahab, this is a little nuts," as Ahab hunts the white whale »

The Brilliance (and Stupidity) of The Age of Stupid

23 September 2009 6:48 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Last night I attended the global premier of The Age of Stupid here in NYC. It was really exciting to be in a movie theater and see not just a film but a live, global premiere event complete with statements addressing the issue as well. Congratulations to the filmmakers for creating this significant innovation in the art (and science/technology) of movie openings! ... and for getting the actress Gillian Anderson, the musician Moby, and former Un Secretary-General Kofi Annan to speak at the event! Wow! Regrettably, this brilliantly staged premiere was for a motion picture that was not really all that brilliant itself. In fact, in some ways, the film is rather stupid. Which may ultimately be a good thing - and may turn out to be why, in a sociological sense, the film was made. »

'The X-Files' Lands On Earth: Wake-Up Video

10 September 2009 6:50 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Today we celebrate the beginning of not only one of the greatest television shows of all time but also a key moment in culture in the late 20th century. On this day in 1993, the very first episode of "The X-Files" premiered on Fox. The show introduced the world to two FBI agents named Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Their mission was to explore unexplained phenomena, and their investigations lead them to discovering all types of secrets surrounding both the paranormal world and their own government. "The X-Files" did everything right, perfectly balancing the tension of a thriller, the visceral punch of horror and just enough humor and will-they-or-won't-they romance to keep the whole series buoyant. It made stars out of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson and spawned a pair of feature films (as well as a spin-off — two if you count "Millennium"). But most importantly, it made it okay for »

Thom Yorke and Gillian Anderson at "The Age of Stupid"

1 September 2009 7:08 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Back in May, I managed to catch a screening of the Pete Postlethwaite-starring sci-fi documentary The Age of Stupid with director Franny Armstrong in attendance (you can read all about it here). Despite its brazen strong-arm lecturing, it is still a doc well-worth looking at, tackling first and foremost the callousness in people's treatment of the environment, striping away excuses and self-justification in order to show the dire effects of such an attitude.

On September 21st/22nd, they will do something pretty special by having a "Global Premiere" that packages the film with a panel discussion and a performance by Radiohead's Thom Yorke Live via satellite in participating theaters.

Prior to the film, you'll see a Live simulcast of the Green Carpet, in which guests arrive by low-carbon methods like bicycle, solar car, rickshaw, chip fat car and... sailboats?
