The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

23 December 2009 10:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

The Messenger Review

The Messenger Review Directed by: Oren Moverman Written by: Alessandro Camon and Oren Moverman Starring: Ben Foster, Woody Harrelson, Samantha Morton, Jena Malone, Steve Buscemi After a few years of movies about the war in Iraq that were both commercial and critical failures, it seems that American filmmakers are finally learning to tackle the subject without trying so hard to make a statement. Most notably, Kathryn Bigelow's action thriller The Hurt Locker has been hailed by many as one of the best films of the year, and is currently riding a huge wave of Oscar buzz. On the other side of the spectrum, we have Oren Moverman's quiet yet powerful indie drama The Messenger (not to be confused with Luc Besson's Joan of Arc biopic of the same name). The tale is a simple one with no immediate hook. Will Montgomery (Ben Foster) is a soldier who »

New Poster and Clip from Youth In Revolt Starring Michael Cera

21 December 2009 8:57 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

If you’re a regular reader of Collider, you already know I thought Youth in Revolt was great.  I saw it at this year’s Toronto Film Festival and afterwards recorded a video blog with Peter from Slashfilm.  I also posted a video interview with Michael Cera and director Miguel Arteta, and Matt recently posted an article on the awesome red band trailer.  What I’m trying to say is…it’s a film you should be excited for as Michael Cera finally shows he can play more than Michael Cera.  In fact, in Youth in Revolt, we get to see the evil Michael Cera as he creates a “supplementary persona” named Francois Dillinger to do the many bad things needed  to win his dream girl.  Trust me, you’ve never seen Michael Cera act like this.

So to help raise awareness, the Weinstein Company has released a new clip and poster. »

A sequel to cult-classic The Big Lebowski could be one step closer after Jeff Bridges said he would take part 'in a minute'. The original 1998 film by Joel and Ethan Coen starred Bridges as The Dude searching for restitution for his ruined rug with the help of his bowling buddies Walt (John Goodman) and Donny (Steve Buscemi). Although it was not a success at the box office, it has garnered a cult following since its release. The film also featured actors Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore and John Turturro. Turturro played a rival bowler Jesus Quintana, and the actor has repeatedly asked the Coen brothers to create a spin-off sequel about his character. »

G-force Blu-ray Review

16 December 2009 5:35 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Whatever can be said of Jerry Bruckheimer, and at this point the white hot hate for his style of Bruckheimer/Simpson movies has to have subsided some (he’s no longer making Top Gun-Style borderline propaganda now that Michael Bay’s moved on), there is no doubt of one thing: dude has an eye for talent. Look at G-Force, and the cast: Tracy Morgan, Zach Galifianakis, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Nicholas Cage, Will Arnett, Penelope Cruz, and Bill Nighy. That’s a cast you’d want in most anything. My review of G-Force after the jump.

Morgan, Rockwell, and Cruz play the lead guinea pigs, who through some training by Galifianakis are an elite squadron of spies. They infiltrate (with the help of their mole, voiced by Cage) Leonard Saber’s (Nighy) home and are on the lookout for some fiendish terrorist plot, but can’t find it, which »

[DVD Review] G-Force

15 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Watching G-Force all the way through might just be the hardest thing you’ll ever do in your life. Hollywood pumps out lots of waste through the bilge pump it calls cinemas, but sometimes something gets stuck in the pipes. It lingers and festers into something more rank and disgusting than anything you could have imagined. If I had to guess, G-Force is the unholy sewage alliance of some Stuart Little spin-off and the nth Baby Geniuses sequel that got torpedoed straight to DVD. Both of them got lodged in septic system and over time molded together into this: talking guinea pigs acting as spies with dim-witted handlers. You put up with a lot of dreck for your kids, but G-Force lacks any entertainment value for adults whatsoever. There are lots of ways to entertain the children, don’t let this be one of them.

'Youth In Revolt' Red Band Trailer (Nsfw): Michael Cera As A Mustachioed Ladykiller

11 December 2009 7:08 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Just when you thought Michael Cera could only play one character, he does something new. Well, he starts off 'Youth in Revolt' as a familiar earnest-awkward nerd. When his attempts to win his dream girl's heart prove terribly misguided, he creates an alternate persona named Francois Dillinger, a mustachioed, cigarette-smoking lothario who wants to "tickle your belly button from the inside." More dirty ladybait follows. If there is more where this came from, the movie may be funny. Below you can watch the red band trailer, which contains much more colorful language than the official trailer released a few months ago. Portia Doubleday, Jean Smart, Zach Galifianakis, Steve Buscemi and Ray Liotta costar. 'Youth in Revolt' opens January 8. Youth In Revolt Red Band Trailer Online

9 December 2009 2:37 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

It may not be the first trailer we've seen for Youth In Revolt but it sure is the sweariest, as the sweet and sour sides of Michael Cera drop F-bombs all over the shop.

A tale about a nervous young fella who falls in love with a girl and then develops a lothario alter ego in an attempt to woo her, it's shaping up to be an entertaining alternative to Cera's usual nebbish schtick.

The film, which is directed by Miguel Arteta and co-stars the likes of Steve Buscemi, Zach Galifianakis, Ray Liotta and Justin Long, is due for release early next year.

Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments section...

'Youth in Revolt' Gets Red Band Trailer

8 December 2009 11:50 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Dimension Films has shared another sneak peek at "Youth in Revolt" by releasing an age-restricted trailer. Though there are not many raunchy actions, there are quite a lot of R-rated jokes in the clip. The snippet, additionally, gives a look at the silly things done by Nicholas "Nick" Twisp to win the heart of a girl.

Nick is a high school student who goes on a quest to lose his virginity after his parents' break-up. When meeting Sheeni Saunders on a family vacation, he is attracted to her. Unfortunately, Sheeni doesn't see him as a boyfriend material. Unwilling to give up easily, Nick creates a "supplementary persona" named Francois Dillinger in an attempt to win her heart and gain a sexual relationship with her. While he is working hard to impress her, Sheeni does almost everything under the sun to make his attempts fail.

Youth in Revolt Redband Trailer: It’s Better with Cursing

8 December 2009 4:09 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The first trailer for Youth in Revolt, the Michael Cera-led comedy about a young man who invents an alternate persona in order to be 'bad enough' for the girl of his dreams, fell short by a measure or two. In this writer's opinion, it gave away far too much of the film's plot without being entertaining. This redband trailer, which debuted over at Funny or Die, is much better. It still gives away too much of the film, but at least it gets some laughs with various absurdly crass moments. Directed by Miguel Artera and based on a novel from C.D. Payne, Youth also stars Portia Doubleday, Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta, Justin Long, Rooney Mara, Zach Galifianakis and Fred Willard. Having seen it at the Austin Film Festival, I can tell you that it's definitely worth seeing when it hits theaters on January 8, 2010. »

Red Band “Youth in Revolt” Trailer

8 December 2009 1:30 PM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

A brand new red-band trailer for “Youth In Revolt” has been released.

Based on the acclaimed novel by C.D. Payne, “Youth in Revolt” is the story of Nick Twisp, a unique, but affable teen with a taste for the finer things in life like Sinatra and Fellini, who falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful, free-spirited Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday) while on a family vacation.

But family, geography and jealous ex-lovers conspire to keep these two apart. With Sheeni’s encouragement, Nick abandons his dull, predictable life and develops a rebellious alter ego: Francois. With his ascot, his moustache and his cigarette, Francois will stop at nothing to be with Sheeni, and leads Nick Twisp on a path of destruction with unpredictable and uproarious consequences.

The coming-of-age comedy is directed by Miguel Arteta from the script by Gustin Nash, Miguel Arteta and Michael Cera.

Red Band Trailer for Youth In Revolt Starring Michael Cera

8 December 2009 11:57 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Funny or Die has debuted the red band trailer for Miguel Arteta’s upcoming comedy Youth in Revolt starring Michael Cera.  I know it’s a red band trailer because there’s an R-rated joke every ten seconds or so.  They’re not bad but I don’t need this movie to be filthy to enjoy it.  I’m already pretty excited for the flick especially since I’ve heard highly positive things about it from those who have seen it (including Steve who thought it was great).  For those who don’t know, the movie is about Nick Twisp (Cera), an 18-year old high school student who goes on a quest to lose his virginity after his parent’s breakup. He does this by creating a “supplementary persona” named Francois Dillinger who can inspire the bad-ass behavior Nick needs to win his dream girl.

Steve Buscemi has been doing a lot of indie films recently, and his latest is no different. Saint John of Las Vegas is a dramedy directed by another first time feature film director Hue Rhodes. The film follows "the wild and funny trip a guy has to take to discover there’s more than one way to hit the jackpot in life." After a run of bad luck, John (Steve Buscemi), a compulsive gambler, runs away from Las Vegas and toward a normal job and life. Taking a nondescript position in an auto insurance company in Albuquerque, he tries to get ahead in the straight world, amid the ever-present temptations of scratch-off lotto tickets. When his boss, Mr. Townsend (Peter Dinklage), asks John to accompany his top fraud debunker, Virgil (Romany Malco) on an investigation of a dubious car “accident” near Vegas, John sees an opportunity to get a promotion »

Watch This: Steve Buscemi in Saint John of Las Vegas Trailer

7 December 2009 6:32 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

I'm not entirely sure why, but Steve Buscemi hasn't been in anything besides independent films recently. He hasn't appeared in any major feature films since I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, although he is also in Youth in Revolt. Saint John of Las Vegas is a new indie from a fist-time filmmaker starring Steve Buscemi, Romany Malco, Sarah Silverman, Peter Dinklage, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Tim Blake Nelson. I'd never heard of it before today, but it looks great, and I'm quite interested in checking it out. It's a small indie film about a compulsive gambler who gets lured back into Las Vegas. Check it out, it looks kinda fun. Trailer: Steve Buscemi Is St. John Of Las Vegas

5 December 2009 10:57 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The first trailer for IndieVest Pictures' Saint John of Las Vegas has dropped, and it looks funny in that dry, Coen brothers sort of way that has you laughing at things that in any normal situation you might feel bad for laughing at. It's a virtual who's who of .that guys. with the ultimate .that guy. rocking the top line, Steve Buscemi. Other support comes in various comedic forms from Sarah Silverman, Peter Dinklage, John Cho and Romany Malco (that black guy from 40-Year-Old Virgin), with the always jaw-dropping Emmanuelle Chriqui rounding out the cast. Saint John premiers in January, so keep an eye out for if it makes it to your town. »
