A week ago I posted the nominations for the 1st annual Screening Log Movie Awards, and here are the winners I picked for the year 2009. These are really the best of the best of the year.
The big winner for me is "Up in the Air," which received three awards, including best film, best screenplay and best supporting actress (Vera Farmiga). Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" won two prizes.
As you can see below, the best actor category ended in a tie. It's something I don't usually like to do, but Nicolas Cage and Jeff Bridges just equally surprised me this year. Enjoy all the winners below. »

Nicolas Cage, on the brink of financial ruin, is not being sued for $36.7 million. Cage's attorney Marty Singer said his client is facing a lawsuit filed by Red Curb Investments that alleges the actor failed to pay back $3 million in loans - much less than the $37 million earlier reported. 'Any claims that Nic Cage engaged in fraud or wrongful conduct is absurd and ridiculous,' Singer told People magazine. Cage's former accountant and a mortgage broker are also being sued by Red Curb, which accuses them of fraud for allegedly not disclosing Cage's actual financial position. Cage has outstanding taxes with the Internal Revenue Service and has had government liens slapped on assets. He »

Nicolas Cage's attorney has hit back at a multi-million dollar lawsuit accusing the actor of committing fraud after he allegedly reneged on a loan agreement. Bosses at Red Curb Investments claim the National Treasure star borrowed $5 million in July 2007 to fund a real estate venture.
The deal stipulated Cage make monthly repayments of $29,166.67, which included 10 per cent interest - but he reportedly failed to keep up with the finance plan. Company executives accuse Cage of fraud because he neglected to alert Red Curb Investments to the $6.26 million he owes to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) - and they believe the star used the cash to cover his tax shortfall, reports TMZ.com.
Red Curb are suing Cage and Samuel Levin - the former business manager the actor has accused of mismanaging his finances - for $15 million in addition to the loan amount and other costs, which rack up to more than $36.7 million. »

Nicolas Cage's attorney has hit back at a multi-million dollar lawsuit accusing the actor of committing fraud after he allegedly reneged on a loan agreement.
Bosses at Red Curb Investments claim the National Treasure star borrowed $5 million (£3.13 million) in July 2007 to fund a real estate venture.
The deal stipulated Cage make monthly repayments of $29,166.67 (£18,229.17), which included 10 per cent interest - but he reportedly failed to keep up with the finance plan.
Company executives accuse Cage of fraud because he neglected to alert Red Curb Investments to the $6.26 million (£4.2 million) he owes to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) - and they believe the star used the cash to cover his tax shortfall, reports TMZ.com.
Red Curb are suing Cage and Samuel Levin - the former business manager the actor has accused of mismanaging his finances - for $15 million (£9.4 million) in addition to the loan amount and other costs, which rack up to more than $36.7 million (£23 million).
However, Cage's legal representative Marty Singer has blasted the allegations.
He tells TMZ.com, "Any claim that our client engaged in any fraudulent conduct is ridiculous."
Cage was slapped with the big tax lien in October after reportedly failing to pay income tax on earnings dating back to 2007. He is also facing other claims of unpaid tax relating to earnings from 2002 to 2004.
The actor fired Levin and began legal proceedings against him in October, blaming him for leading Cage "down a path of financial ruin". »

Is it really a shock that the excellent reboot of the "Star Trek" franchise, which has notoriously geeky fans, would have the highest downloads for 2009?
Via TorrentFreak. Checking in at just shy of 11 million downloads was the remake of "Star Trek," starring Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine, followed closely by "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" at 10.6 million downloads. We'd wager those two movies were downloaded to personal computers for very different reasons.
The rest of the Top 5 includes "RocknRolla," "The Hangover" and "Twilight." Hmmm. One of these things is not like the others... one of these things just does not belong. What in the blue hell is "RocknRolla?"
Check out the rest of the Top 10 in our photo gallery. Spoiler alert: The Nicolas Cage vehicle "Knowing" is no. 10. Perhaps if more people had paid to see it, Nic Cage wouldn't be selling all his possessions right now. We do find »

Since Moses brought the tablets down from the mountain, lists have come in tens, not that we couldn't have done with several more commandments. Who says a year has Ten Best Films, anyway? Nobody but readers, editors, and most other movie critics. There was hell to pay last year when I published my list of Twenty Best. You'd have thought I belched at a funeral. So this year I have devoutly limited myself to exactly ten films.
On each of two lists.
The lists are divided into Mainstream Films and Independent Films. This neatly sidesteps two frequent complaints: (1) "You name all those little films most people have never heard of," and (2) "You pick all blockbusters and ignore the indie pictures." Which is is my official Top Ten? They both are equal, and every film here is entitled to name itself "One of the Year's 10 Best!"

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
Directed by: Jon Turteltaub
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina, Monica Bellucci
Rating: Nr
Release Date: July 16, 2010
Trailer Score: 5/10
My Thoughts: The legacy of Nic Cage’s haircuts is going to continue with this movie, which has the Cagemaster looking grayed and shaggy (or homeless). This style kind of brings me back to Bangkok Dangerous, a place I don’t want to revisit. His delivery of his few lines in this trailer don’t give me much hope. Listen to how he says “You are going to be a source for good, and a very important sorcerer.” It’s not gravelly enough to distance itself from just being Nic Cage with a magic wand. It’s also not very convincing. Consider his goofy tone with his goofy look, and you’ve got a skeptical situation. One of his more laughable performances? I really hope not. »
