Is Avatar’s Budget Half a Billion, or Half That?

3 hours ago | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

An article in the New York Times has caused quite a stir today in the movie community after it claimed a $500 million budget for James Cameron’s 3-D film, Avatar.

Michael Cieply’s report wonders if Fox can turn a profit from a production that costs half a billion, a total that includes everything from paying the special effects wizards to TV spots on Nickelodeon.  The studio claims the costs of making the actual movie are around $230 million, possibly a low-ball number (like most studio budget estimates) but still under the roughly $267 million spent on 1997’s Titanic after an adjustment for inflation.

Cieply writes Fox will likely spend somewhere around $150 million to market Avatar globally, but how does that suddenly add up to 500?  It continues to say $250M in domestic ticket sales would mean Fox was in the black, a seemingly arbitrary number even when you figure in outside investors. »

People Find New Way to Rag on Avatar; Film Reportedly Cost Over a Half-Billion Dollars

7 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It looks like James Cameron’s Avatar is being setup to fail by every metric possible except the one that counts: “Is it a good movie?”  Set up for a fall by unreasonable expectations brought on by intense secrecy, Avatar has already been derided for lackluster CG (even though Cameron said at Comic-Con that it was Gollum back in 2002 which confirmed that Avatar was possible) and a New York Times piece which applauded Cameron as a craftsman but one completely oblivious to the needs of actors or a rich story.

Now another damaging story has appeared in the NY Times, this time reporting that the cost of production and marketing for Avatar, spread out over multiple investors, is $500 million dollars.  Hit the jump for details and remember that you’ve decided to be disappointed no matter what.

Avatar’s Latest Trailer Goes for the Kiddie Adventure Vibe

9 hours ago | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Apparently whoever is cutting the trailers for James Cameron’s “Avatar” got word from high up at 20th Century Fox that the first few trailers were too gosh darn serious, what with all the military occupation, political backstabbing, planet razing, and alien genocide-attemptin’ going on. The result: this new trailer, which sells the movie as a kiddie adventure film, ala some shitty Disney kids movie. You can’t really blame them for hedging their bets. The budget for “Avatar” has soared somewhere into the $250-$350 million dollar range (trying to get a fix on it is impossible at this point, with special effects not even finished yet), but word is by the time the P&A costs are added in, “Avatar” is going to cost the studio somewhere in the $500 million dollar range. Say it with me, now: “What recession?” Help the good guys kill the locals and rape their »

Lengthy New Avatar TV Spot

10 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

December 18th is right around the corner, and for everyone interested in film that means one thing... only one more week til Sherlock Holmes. Gotcha! Of course I'm talking about the long anticipated release of James Cameron's so-called revolutionary film Avatar. Claiming to change the world of 3D forever, this past year Avatar has been one of the most talked about films of all-time, not to mention the relentless publicity that's about as hard to avoid as a roundhouse kick from Chuck Norris. With just over a month until its release, the advertising onslaught continues here with this new TV spot from the Cameron camp. I use the term .TV spot. loosely because it's a minute and a half long and spots that long cost a damn pretty penny unless you're looking at showing it during a mid-day Lifetime original movie. But you can expect to start seeing both »

'Avatar' Budget Reportedly Runs About $500 Million

10 hours ago | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

It's a worthwile question, direct from The New York Times: "Can a movie studio make money on a film based on an original and unfamiliar story, with no Hollywood superstars, a vanishing DVD market and a price tag approaching $500 million?"

The movie is Avatar, and the budget number is a little misleading, but then again, not exactly. The Times is rolling marketing costs into that equation - estimated to be around $150 million from the coffers of Rupert Murdoch, which The Old Gray Lady says is "slightly lower than expected." But even for a $200 million movie like Transformers, the marketing is well over $100 million worldwide, so the half a billion for Avatar needs to be put on balance with everything else. However, even without the advertising, that still means we're looking at a $350 million movie. So how in the hell did they pay for it?

According to the article, Fox knew »

Cameron: 'I want to blow audiences away'

13 hours ago | Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

James Cameron has said that he likes his films to blow the audience away. The director of upcoming 3D sci-fi movie Avatar also told The Times that it was "incorrect" that he was scared of filmmaking after 1997's Titanic. Cameron said: "I like to blow an audience away. I like to f**k with their heads. I like to show 'em stuff they've probably seen in a dream but they've never seen in a movie. "Like they've had an experience outside their day-to-day life, outside this world, maybe outside their body. It will have been a visual journey, a physical journey - in the sense you feel like you've actually climbed that mountain - and an emotional journey." When asked if studio executives were worried about the (more) »

Augmented Reality Is Both a Fad and the Future -- Here's Why

Why layering data on top of smartphones and computer screens is both a fad and the future.

You wouldn't immediately suspect that Yelp's iPhone app might be a gift bestowed upon us by a benevolent superhero from the future. Load it up and the program's in its Clark Kent garb -- a useful-enough guide to local restaurants, bars, and merchants.

Then you notice a button labeled monocle in the right-hand corner. Hit it and the screen displays a live feed from the phone's camera, showing exactly what's in front of you -- with one big difference. Aim the camera at a local storefront and Yelp superimposes a star rating on the image. Use Monocle in a hot neighborhood, for instance, and point it at every restaurant for a quick appraisal of the best food in the area.

TV Spots Position Avatar as Action Flick and Family Adventure

16 hours ago | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

It looks like Avatar is trying really hard to be all things to all people. And with an unprecedented half-billion dollars in the balance (according to a New York Times estimate of the movie's budget), it's no wonder.

Aiming to solidify Avatar's appeal as a straight-up action adventure flick, the studio has released a 30-second TV spot that's all action, with almost none of that messy dialogue and romance stuff — lots of machine-on-alien violence set to a staccato beat. Not quite Transformers, but it gets the job done.

A second TV ad takes a completely different approach, spotlighting the magic of discovery on an alien world overloaded with eye candy. The tagline:

Welcome to a place beyond your imagination. A place where wonder lives and adventure rules.

It's all much more in the style of Jurassic Park, with new footage of Pandora's bio-luminescent flora and fauna. The commercial also »

New Stuff In a Kid-Friendly 'Avatar' Trailer

17 hours ago | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

We do get to see a few more details about James Cameron's Avatar in this new trailer, and some of this stuff will look terrific in 3-D, I'd have to believe. But there's one slight difference between this trailer and the previous ones: It is apparently kid-tested, mother approved.

The trailer premiered the other day on The Cartoon Network, and even though there's plenty of adult (or at least PG-13) programming there, this video is definitely geared for a younger crowd. The music and the voiceover stick out like sore thumbs, and both of those things influence the tone, which, it should be said, is lighter in general, anyway. There are fewer battles and more...flowers. Great big flowers.

Yeah, it's kind of a different look at Avatar, but what we see gives us a little more perspective on what Cameron is trying to do. »

Updated: So 'Avatar' is Approaching a $500 Million Budget? Sorta, Probably...

20 hours ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Update: As I briefly mention in my comments on Michael Cieply's "New York Times" piece concerning Avatar's budget, his numbers are a bit interesting to say the least. Dave Poland has taken an even closer look and while Cieply's math leaves a lot of holes in his analysis saying Avatar will be a $500 million film, it does have some interesting tidbits to go along with it. Just know the actual cost of Avatar is likely never going to be realized and let's just hope it lives up to its billing. Again, here's a link to Poland's analysis.

Okay, so remember back in March when Time's Josh Quittner published in a feature article headlined "3-D: The Future of Movies" and said James Cameron's Avatar was working on a $300 million budget and how Fox came out and even Quittner commented on my article saying "the $300 million number in his article »

Avatar’s Budget is Almost $500 Million?! Can It Make a Profit?

20 hours ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

In the current economic climate, simply typing a sentence about a film that, including marketing costs, now tallies up to a reported half-a-billion dollars is surreal enough to put Dr. Evil on stun. That's the unprecedented figure being batted around in a new Nyt report about the financial realities that lie ahead for James Cameron's Avatar and 20th Century Fox. So, what exactly are the stakes and how much does the 3D sci-fi actioner and proclaimed cinematic game changer need to gross come December? Well, what surprised me most about the report is the flow of calm responses from inside sources that are sprinkled throughout. While the graveyard of pricey tentpole flops that includes Waterworld, Heaven's Gate, Cuttthroat Island, and even this summer's Terminator Salvation would seem to loom large, Avatar's costs are said to be well divided amongst many partners i.e. there's not a single head that, »

New TV Spot for Avatar

8 November 2009 3:31 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

We’ve had a couple of trailers now for James Cameron’s Avatar and so far it’s focused more on the battle with the Na’vi. This new TV spot was released on the Cartoon network and has a nice Disney-style voice over on it where we get to see a bit more footage. The British Board if Film Classification (BBFC) hasn’t rated the movie yet as far as I can tell but after this appearing on the Cartoon Network, I assume it’ll be a PG or a 12a. More info as we get it.

Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Sigourney Weaver and if you haven’t seen the trailer already, you can view it here. Counting down the days now for Avatar – 18th December is it’s release date.

Cameron Led Jungle Expedition For Avatar Stars

8 November 2009 3:06 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Moviemaker James Cameron sent the cast of his new movie Avatar off to the jungle for bonding bootcamp exercises before he started shooting the upcoming epic.

The Titanic director called on stars including Sigourney Weaver and Zoe Saldana to get a feel for rainforest life, so they could better play their jungle-dwelling characters in the film.

He tells Entertainment Weekly magazine, "We did a sense-memory experiment in Hawaii. We trekked around the rainforest for three days, building campfires and cooking fish, trying to live tribally."

And Saldana insists Cameron's pre-filming jungle expedition was a great idea: "That experience helped us so much. Sigourney, Sam and I were shooting the movie on a regular cement floor on a soundstage, but we needed to know what it was like to walk in a jungle world, what that felt like." »

10 Most Fascinating 'End of the World' Movies

8 November 2009 4:59 AM, PST | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

There are many theories, ideas or should I say 'schools of thought' on how the world would end. At the height of the Cold War, nuclear annihilation ranks at the very top. While others argue it will not be man who will destroy the world (directly) but - an epidemic of global proportions (most probably from a potent strain of virus - think: I am Legend) or severe climactic change (another ice age perhaps? That would be Day After Tommorow right?) or mechanical uprising (The Terminator, anyone?) or even attack from the outside - conquering aliens (Mars Attacks!) or perhaps an asteroid. And let's not forget zombies!
