Can someone explain to me exactly where the hell Sam Worthington came from? One minute he's as well known as my neighbor who knits sweaters for her cats and the next he is stealing thunder from John Conner in a Terminator sequel and headlining the first James Cameron film in 12 years. The man is certainly the breakthrough action star of 2009 and with that title, of course, he will be the subject of rumor for every action film for the next five years. So what tent pole will Worthington be "attached to" next? HollyScoop, which has a name as reputable as The Sun, has reported that the man is now on a shortlist of actors being looked at to bring back Flash Gordon, the interstellar polo player who fights Ming the Merciless on planet Mongo (Don't you miss the 1930s?) Ryan Reynolds is among the other actors being looked at for »

According to a recent press release by the IMAX Corporation, the company’s current draw, Avatar, is absolutely shattering IMAX box office records.
In just ten days, the film has already taken in $39 million worldwide, making $8.8 million domestically and $3.6 million internationally in its second weekend. The $8.8 million from IMAX showings counts for about 12 percent of Avatar’s domestic gross, despite IMAX theaters making up less than 3 percent of the screens playing the movie.
Although IMAX theaters make up a small portion of the total screens showing Avatar, 17 of the top 20 locations showing the film in the U.S. were IMAX theaters.
Internationally, IMAX theaters in both Poland and Japan saw record openings, and Avatar is still set to open on 11 IMAX screens in China, which will likely also see record breaking numbers.
Greg Foster, the Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment, credits the overwhelming success of Avatar with the style of the movie, »

A majority of Hollywood is on cruise control ’till the beginning of the New Year but that truly doesn’t stop the internet rumors and blogosphere from collecting casting rumors and all the other production gossip there is. One story in particular hit our radar this morning from Hollyscoop (a source about as reliable as me saying “the sky is falling”)
Sam Worthington and Ryan Reynolds are two of only a handful of actors on the Flash Gordon shortlist according to the site and their “source”.
Hollywood has lists and there is no doubt both these guys are on it. It seemed not so long ago that list used to look like or at least I would assume would have looked like this – Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Will Smith and so forth. Now different names seem to be synonymous and more sought out for large blockbuster budget material. Hugh Jackman is one of those guys, »

Leona Lewis could soon be in line for a Hollywood movie career, according to reports. The singer, who recorded the theme for James Cameron's new film Avatar earlier this year, is said to have impressed the director so much that he is considering casting her in a forthcoming film. A source told Showbiz Spy: "James is well known for casting strong females in his films and he sees that quality in Leona. "She has (more) »

Ok, so Avatar scored soaring reviews and scads of money, blah, blah, blah: That still doesn’t mean James Cameron is going to win another Oscar for best picture. Lane Brown details five reasons why not in New York : Special effects: As in, the special effects are the only rave-worthy thing about the movie. Titanic , at least, had more going for it, even if the dialogue sucked. The Academy: Its “current membership is comprised primarily of whiny snobs"—whiny snobs who, you may recall, snubbed The Dark Knight last year. Screening copies: Sadly, the DVD copies furnished to Academy voters will »

When the AFI releases their list of the top 10 films of a given year or century, we pay attention (like we did for this year's list). When they list the "moments of significance" in a given year, though, it's more like something to puzzle over in the absence of real news between holidays. So... yeah. Their list of "moments of significance" for 2009 includes "Avatar: James Cameron's Milepost in the Evolution of the Art Form," the death of Michael Jackson, Twitter and "2009- A Year of Extraordinary Animation." They also take a slight dig at Jay Leno and "the loss of drama," pointing out once again that NBC took away five hours of scripted programming in order to force America to spend more time with a guy even they don't like that much. Nothing on this list is all that surprising, but with the namechecking ranging from Leno and »

The American Film Institute has released its list of 2009's "Moments of Significance" and hailed James Cameron's "Avatar" as one of the "events" of 2009. Yet, the film wasn't chosen as one of the year's best movies. (Take a look at AFI's Top 10 of 2009 right here)
But their picks are quite intriguing -- Twitter, Reality Shows, Leno, Michael Jackson. Here's the complete AFI Moments of Significance:
AFI Moments Of Significance
Avatar - James Cameron.S Milepost In The Evolution Of The Art Form
James Cameron.s pioneering effort to unleash the human imagination was fully realized in 2009 with the release of Avatar, a film that firmly established itself as a landmark in the way stories are told.
With an army of technological wizards at his side, writer/director/producer/co-editor Cameron called upon the forces of art and technology to create new tools for storytelling that are groundbreaking in both scope and scale. »

James Cameron has revealed that his planned Avatar sequels could take place away from the first film's Pandora setting. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Cameron said that further films will move the action off Pandora and explore other moons orbiting around the planet Polyphemus. "The planet in Pandora's sky is called Polyphemus and it's the primary for a system of moons, just like in our solar system, Jupiter has fifty some moons and they're (more) »

[It's back, it's in English, and it's high res. Check out the new Inception trailer here.]
Call it the anti-Avatar. Slick, intelligent science fiction that relies on concept rather than flash to engage the audience.
At an advance screening of Sherlock Holmes a couple nights ago I was treated to the new theatrical trailer for Christopher Nolan's Inception and came away much impressed. Yes, the voice over on this particular trailer is a bit over bearing but the imagery and concepts lurking all the talk are absolutely fantastic and - most impressive - was how much of this is being realized in-camera with CGI being used only when absolutely necessary. Such as when rolling up a city. It's a use of technology that stands in stark contrast to James Cameron's approach with Avatar. While Cameron created new technology to create artificial worlds, Nolan went the opposite direction and used existing technology to shoot the real world in a way that made it appear foreign and disorienting. »

The Roland Emmerich disaster movie has raked in 460m yuan at the Chinese box office, surpassing the record set by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen only in July this year
In the grand pantheon of the top-grossing films of all time at the global box office, it ranks only a modest 31st. But 2012, the Roland Emmerich apocalypse flick, has become the biggest ever movie hit in China.
The film opened in China on 13 November. By the weekend, its spectacular 460m yuan (£42.1m) haul had taken it past the 400m yuan earned by the incumbent Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, reports Variety.
The trade paper attributes 2012's success to a combination of the rapidly growing number of cinema screens in China and the movie's favourable subplot, which sees the Chinese building arks to save a small number of humans from destruction. Transformers itself only became the No 1 film in July, surpassing 1998's Titanic, »

The nominees will only be announced on 2 February and the awards given out on 7 March, but the likely contenders can already be divined
As the end of 2009 approaches we're in the thick of the Us awards season and pretty much everyone from the critics groups and some of the guilds to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Hfpa), the American Film Institute and the local barman have publicised their nominees and winners. Top 10 lists for 2009 have been drawn up, the year's most admired actors and actresses have been proposed and anointed, and the merits of the best work in directing, screenwriting, editing and all the crafts have been debated. The only body that has yet to weigh in on the virtues of Gabourey Sidibe or George Clooney or Invictus is the guardian of the Oscars – the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

‘Avatar’ has already piled up Usd 620 million in worldwide grosses and, of course, in our "what’s next?" culture that means people are already peppering writer-director James Cameron with questions about a sequel. When asked about the follow-up possibilities for the film, Cameron hinted that it may indeed be a possibility.

Even with a budget rumored to be as high as $430 million, James Cameron's Avatar is already a success after less than two weeks at the box office. The most recent totals put the movie's take at $213 million domestically and $410 million internationally, for a total of $623 million after just 10 days. With numbers like that this soon after its release, an Avatar sequel seems almost inevitable.
In a recent interview with the L.A. Times, Cameron was asked about the possibility of exploring some of the other heavenly bodies glimpsed in Avatar for a sequel and he joked, "I don't even want to think about this movie right now, to tell you the truth." However, Cameron did admit that some of the other moons conceptualized for Avatar could provide source material for a possible future story.

Hollywood has shut down for the week, so there isn't much news to report. However, James Cameron's Avatar seems to still be kicking ass at the box office, landing in the #1 this spot last weekend and topping $600 million worldwide in just over 10 days. IMAX sent out a press release last night stating that Avatar is breaking more and more IMAX records, which is impressive because The Dark Knight set the bar quite last year. "To have reached $39 million from 249 screens in just 10 days demonstrates that moviegoers clearly understand the value of experiencing Avatar in IMAX," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX. If you haven't seen Avatar in IMAX 3D yet, it definitely is the way to see it, even though it wasn't "shot" on IMAX cameras. Although it was only "digitally re-mastered" for IMAX, it still looks incredible because of the level of »

What's next for James Cameron and Avatar? He's already discussed making a sequel, but now a little more light has been shed on it.
Cameron tells The Los Angeles Times that an Avatar 2 or whatever it might be called could explore the other moons in the same planetary system occupied by Pandora, the moon at the center of his new runaway hit.
"The planet in Pandora's sky is called Polyphemus and it's a primary for a system of moons just like in our solar system," explained the King of the World. "We have some story ideas about how to branch out into other moons of Polyphemus and the Alpha Centauri A solar system." »
