The Flickcast Presents: Best Films Of 2009

6 hours ago | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Rather than tell you what I think I should, I decided to come clean on this list. For instance, I am aware that A Serious Man might technically and artistically be a cut above some of these, but I just didn’t enjoy it as much. I’ll also preface this by saying since I was covering most of the main-stream movies this year, there were a lot of independent movies I didn’t see, so they may not appear on the list. The film title links to a review when applicable.

Up In The Air – Buoyed by a trio of fantastic actors, I found this movie to be utterly charming. Directed by Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking, Juno), the movie is touching, prescient, original, and funny. Vera Farmiga, George Clooney and Anna Kendrick all received Golden Globe acting nominations.  George Clooney’s depiction of a traveling man who »

Lisa Schwarzbaum's 10 movie marvels of the decade

Notice I didn't say best movies -- that territory has been well covered by far more passionate list makers than I am. (By the way, do you agree with me that a devotion to ranking is primarily a male urge?  Tell me three good reasons why I'm right or wrong. At any rate, I don't have the gene for it.) As the first decade of the 21st century comes to a close, though, here's fodder for your New Year's Eve party: A list, in no particular order, of 10 movie developments from the past 10 years that have impressed, depressed, excited, upset, »

Grounding Up in the Air

8 hours ago | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Of all the movies at holiday time Up in the Air seems poised for the most lofty awards as well as commercial success. A luncheon at 21 was planned for the movie prior to the announcement of its Golden Globes nominations. Before, we were talking about an exceptionally sophisticated indie film with a big star, George Clooney, in the lead. Now we are looking at a wunder-film that hits the Zeitgeist just so, landing on every top ten list, with major Oscar potential, and yet, the celebration at 21 could not have been more grounded. As it happened, two years ago, when director Jason Reitman had a little film called Juno, a luncheon at 21 featured their famous hamburger. Juno played winningly by Ellen Page had a hamburger phone and plastic versions were doled out for a winning ticket. Sigourney »

The nominees will only be announced on 2 February and the awards given out on 7 March, but the likely contenders can already be divined

As the end of 2009 approaches we're in the thick of the Us awards season and pretty much everyone from the critics groups and some of the guilds to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Hfpa), the American Film Institute and the local barman have publicised their nominees and winners. Top 10 lists for 2009 have been drawn up, the year's most admired actors and actresses have been proposed and anointed, and the merits of the best work in directing, screenwriting, editing and all the crafts have been debated. The only body that has yet to weigh in on the virtues of Gabourey Sidibe or George Clooney or Invictus is the guardian of the Oscars – the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Hurt Locker Is Us Critics’ Favorite

18 hours ago | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker (Jonathan Olley / Summit Entertainment) Thus far, The Hurt Locker is the top choice among American film critics. The Iraq War drama directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by Mark Boal, has won about a dozen awards from Us-based critics’ groups, including those from the country’s three largest metropolitan areas: New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Although The Hurt Locker is surely going to get an Oscar nomination come next February, the film’s chances of actually winning the award remain iffy in spite of a SAG nomination (and likely win) for best ensemble. Either Jason Reitman’s dramatic comedy Up in the Air, in which George Clooney plays a corporate-downsizing expert, or James Cameron’s generally well-received [...] »

Black Eyed Peas star Fergie who will be seen prancing around as a pole dancer in Nine, put on 20 pounds to play the character. However, Fergie isn't alone in the girth-for-gelt department. She follows in the method-acting footsteps of stars like George Clooney, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Renee Zellweger who have also let themselves go to play characters with bigger waistlines, bellies and booties. »

Kaleidoscope 2009: Important TV Events (Part 1/4)

28 December 2009 2:33 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Struck by recession, the TV world ceased to inflate a full-blown season in 2009. In order to keep the budget slim, many shows reluctantly reduced the number of star appearances and the networks were forced to carefully select those which will gain them profit and ratings. This led to many actor exits as well as mediocre show cancellations. AceShowbiz is taking its readers for a time travel to the year that was particularly hard on entertainment industry, beginning with the first quarter.

January

What started with a big bang, "Prison Break" had to swallow bitter pill when Fox decided to pull the plug after four years in the running. The series starring Wentworth Miller took a sharp plunge in the transition from third (8.2 million) to fourth (5.3 million) season, which prompted the network to order two additional episodes as a mean of conclusion to the whole drama. George Clooney Rumored to Marry Elisabetta Canalis

28 December 2009 1:55 AM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

George Clooney apparently is ready to take his relationship with girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis to the next level. National Enquirer, as being quoted by Showbiz Spy, claimed that the Ryan Bingham of "Up in the Air" had planned to tie the knot with the actress/model.

Of the reason why Clooney finally made the decision, a source said, "Eli is George's match." The source added, "Elisabetta doesn't need George's money. She does quite well by herself, and she's not the type of woman to allow a man to pay for everything, so she insists on going Dutch."

"He loves that she's her own woman," the source further said of the twosome. "In fact, Eli said no when George wanted her to move to L.A. with him. She broke the news to George that she wants her own home. He offered to pay her rent - and she laughed."

Best Films Of The Decade (aka The Naughties) From Alex & Terry

List # 1

By Alex Simon

When Terry and I initially discussed writing these lists, I had a tough time thinking back on 20 films over the past decade which I was really taken with, thinking that movies have sunk so low over the past ten years, that even choosing a dozen would be a short-order job. Thirty minutes into it, my list had nearly 60 titles! After much cutting, pasting, and re-cutting and pasting, here are my top 20 films (in no particular order) of the first decade of the 21st century, dubbed by many as “the naughties.” --A.S.

1.No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers, 2007) An elegiac blend of stark beauty and full-throttle despair from two of our finest filmmakers, set in the contemporary American West. Every frame is damn near flawless, and would have been an even more perfect vehicle for the late Sam Peckinpah. »

Avatar Tops Record-Breaking Holiday Weekend

27 December 2009 7:29 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

In its second week in theaters, James Cameron’s Avatar topped the largest weekend box office in history that totaled an estimated $264 million in sales.  The figure may be even higher once the final numbers shake out on Monday.

Cameron’s 3D epic contributed $75 million, the second biggest second weekend in history just behind The Dark Knight’s July 2008 run.  Typically movies will see around a 50% decline between weekends, but Avatar managed to drop only 2.6% from its opening on the way to $212 million domestic and already rank 7th in 2009 grosses.

On top of that, it added another $145 million overseas for an unbelievable worldwide total thus far of $617.3 million.

Warner Bros’ Sherlock Holmes put up equally impressive numbers, setting the Christmas Day record with $24.9M on the holiday opening before tallying $65.4 million through Sunday.  Outside of Iron Man, it’s the biggest weekend for stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, »
