Continuing Simon Augustine's countdown of the Most Disturbing Movies (Read Part 1 for the first 13). [<< #7]
6. Requiem For A Dream (2002) 9 (gross out)/8 (artistic merit)
Darren Aronofsky, the Diy auteur who burst onto the scene with the black and white religious-techno fable Pi, and more recently made the wrenching The Wrestler, may have reached a creative peak with this adaptation of a novel by one of the stars of the disturbing branch of the literary world: Hubert Selby, Jr., who also wrote the book Last Exit to Brooklyn. In perhaps the most jarring and skillfully unnerving chronicles of drug addiction ever made, we witness the destruction by heroin and prescription pills of a mother, her son, his girlfriend and best friend (Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, and Marlon Wayans, all top-notch). »

Robert here, continuing my series of the directors that shaped the past 10 years. Last week I wrote about a “love him” or “hate him” director that turned out to be mostly loved. So having promised such a man I feel like I let you down. I think I can do better with this week’s subject: Darren Aronofsky
Number of Films: Three.
Modern Masterpieces: Two. Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain (this is called baiting the hook.)
Total Disasters: None.
Better than you remember: Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain if applicable.
Awards: Requiem and The Wrestler receive Oscar Nominations for acting. The Wrestler gets the Spirit Award for Best Picture. The Fountain goes mostly overlooked (because The Academy has no idea what a good movie score sounds like).
Box Office: The Wrestler is tops with over 23 mil. The Fountain tops 10 mil. Requiem in very limited release (thank »

What follows is my original top ten list of 2000... or rather the revised version I published in 2002. Let's discuss each year of this decade as it winds down! Who's with me?!? It's always interesting to see which films remained at the forefront of our memory and which fade... both for a variety of reasons, quality being only one factor. New comments are in red.
Please note: This list was based on NYC release dates in the year 2000. Some movies are listed as different years at the IMDb based on when they were released in their home country or in La or whatnot.
Runners Up (in descending order): Une Liaisons Pornographique, Nurse Betty, You Can Count On Me, Before Night Falls, Pola X, Chicken Run, American Psycho, Wonder Boys and Billy Elliott Um... What The Hell are some of these movies doing outside the top ten list? You Can Count on Me »

Having spent her summer “hiking, swimming and relaxing” in the mountains with husband Paul Bettany and the couple’s two children, Jennifer Connelly is in a good frame of mind.
The 38-year-old actress admits she struggled following the death of her father last year, but has since gotten back on track. “I’ve been trying to be very healthy, eat well and get lots of fresh air and sunshine,” she tells the UK’s Daily Mirror. “I’m very blessed. I have gorgeous, healthy, funny kids and a good husband.”

Creation is the partly biographical, part fictional account of scientist Charles Darwin's relationship with his eldest daughter 'Annie', as the author struggled to document his evolutionary theories in the book On the Origin of Species. Produced by Jeremy Thomas, the film was directed by Jon Amiel, starring actors Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly as 'Charles' and 'Emma Darwin'. Screenplay is by John Collee, adapting author Randal Keynes's biography of Darwin titled Annie's Box. The film had its world premiere September 10, 2009 at the Toronto International Film Festival as the opening night Gala Presentation. According to producer Thomas, the Us was one of the last countries to find a distributor due to the prominence of the ongoing 'creation' vs. 'evolution' controversy. Newmarket Films (The Passion Of Christ), eventually acquired distribution rights to the Icon film with plans to release it December 2009. In Canada, D Films will release Creation January 22, 2010. Rediscovering Roberts
Eric Roberts never really left, but 2009 audiences are learning (or relearning) the charms of the actor Mickey Rourke has called the best he ever worked with.
By Terry Keefe
(This article is currently appearing in this month's Venice Magazine.)
“Eric Roberts is the [expletive deleted] Man,” proclaimed Mickey Rourke at this past year’s Independent Spirit Awards, while accepting his trophy for Best Male Lead, at the very beginning of a speech which then saw him singling out Roberts, his one-time co-star in 1984’s The Pope of Greenwich Village, as someone who was worthy of a comeback like Rourke had with The Wrestler. From the audience, Roberts himself watched his friend at the podium with what looked to be a combination of embarrassment at being mentioned and some pleasure at the same, finally throwing it back at Rourke by shouting good-naturedly, “Accept your award!” For »

Every so often a Hollywood celebrity will talk about quitting the business, taking time off to spend with family...or will go on late night talk shows looking disheveled and mumbling about how they're heading off on an adventure to start a musical career.
Now comes word that Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Connelly is about to quit the biz. In an interview with the UK's Daily Mirror, Connelly revealed that after What's Wrong with Virginia? finishes shooting, she will likely not sign on for any more projects.
"The biggest thing for me is wanting my kids to grow up safely and have happy lives," said Connelly. "To me that's enough. The family is the most important thing to me. I'm very blessed. I have gorgeous, healthy, funny kids and a good husband."
Connelly's father passed away recently, prompting a very sorrowful time for the 38 year-old actress. "...I went through a really »

Halloween weekend is looking rather bleak in the 'new theatrical releases' category. Paranormal Activity and Saw VI are already fighting it out over horror fans, and other than the behind-the-scenes look at Michael Jackson's last concert series, there are no major theatrical releases. My suggestion if you're not into Michael Jackson - check out Zombieland if you haven't already. It's suitably Halloween-ish and hysterical.

Given man's unwavering fascination with woman, it's no surprise that the female star acts as the anchor to a dominant portion of horror pictures. I mean really, who wants to see a bare chested man tearin ass through the woods screaming at the top of his lungs while a bladed assailant nips at his heels? I don't - I know that much, although I'm certain there are plenty of men who would disagree (and that's okay with me, to each his own!). The simple fact remains however, women bring a unique appeal and certain sensual atmosphere to film that no man ever could. And it's not all about gratuitous T&A.
There's a comforting quality in the hands of the heroine; a fascinating maternal strength that, as a man I cannot genuinely relate to. I can however admire, and in many cases it's nearly impossible to not admire the lone »

Over the last few years, animated family movies have begun to embrace increasingly adult themes and storylines. Led by Pixar, they began by including more grown-up jokes in movies aimed at children, attempting to increase box office figures by making movies that parents could get some enjoyment out of alongside their kids.
Then last year, Pixar picked it up a level with Wall-e. Dealing with themes of loneliness and gluttony, and taking a look at the way mankind has treated this planet, Adults arguably enjoyed it more than the younger audience. Then this years Up dealt with missed love and lost youth in a poignant story of an Septuagenarian making one last journey. Now, Shane Acker’s 9 has come along to further the trend of using animated film to explore adult ideas.

Forbes’ lists of powerful women usually are fairly predictable, topped (in every sense) by Angelina Jolie.
But last week, Forbes published its annual list that reveals another side to power: Roi. And the top 10 actresses who provide the best return on a film company’s investment may surprise you.
At No. 1 is Australian actress Naomi Watts.
Watts’ most recent movie, The International, was a suspenseful thriller, to be sure, but it was only a modest box office success. Watts, however, gets less than $5 million a film — and earned the studio about $44 for every $1 she was paid on her last three major movies.
Second is Jennifer Connelly.
Although He’s Just Not That Into You was fairly cliché, Imo, the studio convinced its stars to take a pay cut to be in the movie. It made $177 million. Average that with Connelly’s roles in Blood Diamond and The Day the Earth Stood Still »
