Continuing Simon Augustine's countdown of the Most Disturbing Movies (Read Part 1 for the first 13). [<< #5]
4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) 8/8
Tobe Hooper, a talented and innovative filmmaker who never quite got his mainstream due, even after making Poltergeist (and be embroiled in controversy with Steven Spielberg about who actually directed it), made this perennial classic on the cheap in the early seventies. Taking the baton from Wes Craven and Last House on The Left, it expresses the miasma of violent dread and disorientation that hung over an America left schizophrenic by the auto-cannibalism of Vietnam, Kent State, Attica, Watergate, etc. Hooper swings at the audience with the kind of gritty haymaker that only very hungry, very creative, and very poor directors just out of the gate can make. »

In a morning report about the 2009 American Film Market - which was admittedly glum last year but is now seeing a silver lining - Screen Daily says The Weinstein Company's Scream 4 has been a hit in the marketplace with buyers "flocking" to the title. This is even before Kevin Williamson has even turned in a draft of the script . Early buzz in the marketplace could spell good things for Dimension Films which has had a sluggish 2009. It might even prompt the Weinsteins to move a little faster to lock down a director. Wes Craven is being courted to return, but he wants to see a script first. Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette are signed to star again and the fourth entry will introduce all-new characters. »

CNN recently released a nice piece on how horror's elder statesmen are making a return. The piece provides two brief pages each on Wes Craven, Sam Raimi, John Landis and George Romero, as well as a short video in which each speaks about the genre. In a day where generally poor remakes stilfe any sense of creativity and cheapie direct-to-dvd releases offer low-budget, derivative drivel, it's nice to see a news organization as large as CNN give props to the men who paved the way.

Horror supremo Kevin Williamson has revealed his plans for 'Scream 4'.
The 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' writer plans to introduce enough new characters in the next film to last him through 'Scream 5' and 'Scream 6', which he also hopes to make.
Kevin said: "The fourth one is an ensemble. It'll take place right now, 10 years later, and it's going to take place in character Sidney Prescott's hometown of Woodsboro. The film will star husband and wife team David Arquette and Courteney Cox, who have starred in the first three films in the series.
"We'll have our three main characters, and we'll be introducing several more."
Kevin, 44, said he has also included plenty of spoof-heavy material in the script.
He explained: "I'll just have to be very aware of the fact that we're a '4' and that we're beating a dead dog.

The Office crew proves they still have their web series juice with their latest online offshoot Subtle Sexuality, which first popped up two weeks ago before premiering October 29. Now the entire three-episode web series is now online including the finale (above), a tribute video "Male Prima Donna" about Kelly Kapoor's on-again/off-againg boyfriend Ryan. And with musicals so hot right now, it's not exactly a shocker that they went that route. Also up now is a fully loaded site around the all-girl pop group formed by Kelley (Mindy Kaling) and Erin (Ellie Kemper). The band satisfies at least two of nutcase Kelly's obsessions—pop celebrities and Ryan (B.J. Novak). And Andy (Ed Helms) gets to rock some more of his Cornell acapella skills. And just like any good web series music video—The Guild's megapop "Do You Wanna Date My Avatar" and Sparhüsen's "Apples & Fish"—you can actually buy the video and track on iTunes. »

Even though no director has been confirmed for the movie, it looks like we have our first bit of promotion coming out for the movie. ShockTillYouDrop have released a new teaser poster (click to enlarge) for Scream 4 which also had the following text:
The horror series that reignited the genre and gross more than $500 million worldwide is back! From Kevin Williamson, creator of the original Scream trilogy, the new film sees the return of cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, along with a group of new stars, who can all hopefully stay alive long enough to figure out the new rules to this one-of-a-kind horror franchise!
Maybe we should start a petition to get Wes Craven back? Who’s with me?!

Kevin Williamson is finally unveiling a little bit about Scream IV, telling MTV that the screenplay is coming together well. Actually, two scripts are being written: One for the fourth film and one for the fifth. Remember, they're not rebooting this for a one-off. Dimension (and likely director Wes Craven, as well) are fashioning a new trilogy.
But first things first: "The fourth one is an ensemble," Williamson says. "It'll take place right now, 10 years [after the first trilogy], and it's going to take place in [Sidney Prescott's hometown of] Woodsboro."
We have heard conflicting reports about what Neve Campbell will be up to, most recently that it's a minor role. Williamson says, "We'll have our three main characters, and we'll be introducing several more," but that doesn't tell us much about Sidney. »

There is little known what "Scream 4" is all about, but screenwriter Kevin Williamson has shed a ray of light. When talking to MTV about how far he has gone with the penning of the script, the writer of recent popular series "The Vampire Diaries" teased on what to expect from the latest installment of the "Scream" series and when it will take place.
[Spoiler Alert!] "The fourth one is an ensemble," the 44-year-old scribe gushed. He went on with more details, saying "It'll take place right now, 10 years later, and it's going to take place in [Sidney Prescott's hometown of] Woodsboro. We'll have our three main characters, and we'll be introducing several more."
Williamson further confirmed that the three characters are Neve Campbell's Sidney, Courteney Cox's Gale and David Arquette's Dewey. He then mentioned again that "We'll also be introducing a little group, a little ensemble of new cast members. That'll take us through the next three. »

One horror franchise which has been on the backburner for quite sometime over at The Weinstein Company is "Scream". The first three franchise entries were extremely successful, each bringing in over $100 million in domestic box-office earnings. Since the studio has struggled since its split from Disney, they were quick to throw a fourth movie into production which is suppose to be the beginning of a brand new "Scream" trilogy. Writer Kevin Williamson recently revealed some plot details for the flick which has stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courtney Cox-Arquette returning, yet there's no word as to whether director Wes Craven will return (he helmed all three previous films). Read on for what Williamson had to say.

It’s a bit late but to finally end my Halloween champion Slasher report on who is the king out of Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger, I have watched the entire back catalogue of their films and given a run down on each characters franchise story and best kills.
Part 1 was on Jason, Part 2 was Michael Myers and finally Part 3 is on the killing Dream Demon Freddy Krueger.
Set on Elm Street, Freddy is the reason I struggled to sleep through the late 80’s due to being terrified of him visiting me in my dreams.
Beware pictures of blood, a lot of gushing blood and other violent deaths.
And so a little rhyme to begin this story:
One, two, Freddy’s coming for you.
Three, Four, Better Lock your door.
Five, Six, grab your Crucifix.
Seven, Eight, Gonna stay up late.
Nine, Ten, Never sleep again.

Kevin Williamson teased earlier via his twitter page that he's "writing" and that it's been a "late night". After a brief chat with MTV, it's evident that he's hard at work completing the script for Scream 4 , with the 5th chapter also on cue. (He tell's MTV he's contractually obligated to Part 5 as well.) We already know that stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette are all returning, and although director Wes Craven hasn't fully committed, he has expressed interest and excitement over Williamson's ideas. So, what can we expect from the next sequel? "The fourth one is an ensemble. It'll take place right now, 10 years later, and it's going to take place in [Sidney Prescott's hometown of] Woodsboro. With a budget bumping $240 million and technology that's over 10 years in the making, James Cameron's Avatar is primed to push Hollywood into a new dimension. The 3D tour de force is the first film of it's kind, comprised of roughly 60% computer-generated elements and 40% live-action, all seamlessly melded together into a brilliant depth of field when seen through the lenses of polarized, stereoscopic, librarian-looking glasses. Entertainment pundits expect the movie to be the biggest blockbuster since, well, Cameron's last biggest blockbuster (which happened to be the biggest blockbuster of all-time). Some say it may even save movie theaters from the internet. Avatar could herald the arrival of a revolutionized 3D film industry that studio execs have tried to make stick since the 50s. Unless, of course, the internet also gets three dimensional. While early tests on YouTube have been both interesting and headache-inducing, a new web series from Hank's Beak Productions and starmaker, »

Jackie Earle Haley has promised a "deeper" version of the reboot of A Nightmare On Elm Street. The Watchmen star, who has signed up to play iconic villain Freddy Krueger in the remake to Wes Craven's 1984 classic, has said that the forthcoming movie will pay homage to the horror franchise. Haley told MTV: "I think the glove is pretty familiar. It's really important for us, I think, as we're re-imagining this, that there is a good, strong sense of new and fresh - yet there's some recognisability, you know? "A lot of what was in that first movie is also in this movie, as far as the structure of it and how it (more) »

Remember last Halloween when master horror-thriller director (and Tubefilter reader) Wes Craven took over the main page of YouTube? He featured a number of spooky themed web series like Aussie thriller The 21 Conspiracy, 2009: A True Story and Luke 11:17. This year, it looks like a smattering of snoozer vampires vids. But luckily we served up a Halloween specials sampler from the web series this week, including The Guild's Halloween special. View counts are still hot button issue, with Revision3's CEO Jim Louderback venting his frustrations this week. We too are frustrated with unverifiable view count claims, and so we requested to audit the backend analytics of Ikea-backed Easy to Assemble's nearly 2 million views in just three weeks. Our breakdown looked at how they engaged the Ikea faithful who hav rallied behind the cult series. Chiller Circle of Ei8ht debuted on MySpace, giving the site a much needed return to scripted web series. »

If there is anyone I would want to choose what movies I watch this Halloween weekend (besides Stephen King or Wes Craven), I'd want it to be Oscar winning director Martin Scorsese. He's a genius filmmaker and I'm sure he knows great horror when he sees it. I think this would've been much better coordinated if his new movie Shutter Island was actually out in theaters (damn you Paramount), but either way this is a great list. The Daily Beast asked Scorsese to choose some horror movies for Halloween and he came up with his own list of the 11 Scariest Horror Movies of All Time. Read on to see what great classics he chose! 1. The Haunting (Robert Wise, 1963) 2. Isle of the Dead (Mark Robson, 1945) 3. The Uninvited (Lewis Allen, 1944) 4. The Entity (Sidney J. Furie, 1981) 5. Dead of Night (Alberto Cavalcanti, 1945) 6. The Changeling (Peter Medak, 1980) 7. The ... »
