23 Movies Worth Saving (From the First 23 Years of My Life)

14 hours ago | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

With the Library of Congress’ recent announcement of the 25 films being added to our National Film Registry for 2009, I was inspired to look back over some of the films that haven’t yet been included. In doing so, I noticed there are many films from my lifetime that deserve eventual recognition. The National Film Preservation Board selects up to 25 films each year to be included in the Registry, so I have selected 23 yet unselected films from my lifetime (one for each year) that I would like to nominate for 2010… in fact, I’ve actually submitted my list of nominations to the National Film Preservation Board, as they encourage the public to do. More info on this can be found at their website.

This list of 23 films spans my lifetime, which means they fall between my year of birth (1978) and the new cut-off year which is 10 years back (2000). This is Not »

Top 50 Performances of the Decade (Male)

14 hours ago | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

They aren't ranked. Deal with it. I must thank these 47 actors again (three performers have two entries) one last time for delivering such indelible characterizations these past ten years. Bid them adieu before moving on to a fresh decade, the Teens. You may notice that this list includes no 2009 performances. It's too early! I don't wanna give away my upcoming nominees and I still need time to let the year settle. My dozen favorites are selected rather impulsively in red. And with "best/favorites" it's always subject to change with the passing of time... or moods.

'Twilight': Robert Pattinson admits he auditioned just to meet Kristen Stewart

15 hours ago | Zap2It - The Dish Rag | See recent Zap2It - The Dish Rag news »

"Twilight" star Robert Pattinson has admitted that he initially auditioned for the role of Edward Cullen because he wanted to meet -- and get to know -- Kristen Stewart.

"I had read the script and I barely knew that they were books, too. The only reason I went to the audition was to see Kristen because I had a huge crush on her," Pattinson tells a British website.

Well, mission definitely accomplished.

Now these two are the biggest unofficial couple in the universe.

How well he got to know Kristen remains a source of tremendous speculation. But the top male movie star (beating Johnny Depp!) insists that he's still unattached and on the market.

"Of course I had a crush on her, but we are just very good friends. I am young, free and single. I like people being forward. Gosh, I don't know. I like strong people."

Discuss: Pleasantly Surprising Performances

15 hours ago | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I've already seen my first movie of 2010, and it was The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. It was definitely a great choice to kick off a new year! I'm not a huge Terry Gilliam fan either way, so I went in fairly unbiased but excited for a good yarn, dazzling images, and some good-to-great performances. Besides, I can't resist Tom Waits as the Devil. I was immensely impressed with all of the above, especially the eerily seamless way that Terry Gilliam and co-writer Charles McKeown managed to adjust the story and direction to fit the untimely death of Heath Ledger during filming with help from actors Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell, who stepped in to play Tony in different scenes. Naturally, Christopher Plummer was great, and Andrew Garfield (Boy A, the Red Riding trilogy) was also wonderful as the smitten Anton. And this was definitely Verne Troyer's best role yet. »

A Prophet

Opens: February 12th 2010

Cast: Tahar Rahim, Niels Arestrup, Adel Bencherif, Hichem Yacoubi, Reda Kateb

Director: Jacques Audiard

Summary: Sent to prison, Malik El Djebena falls under the sway of a group of Corsicans who enforce their rule in the prison. As the 'missions' go by, he toughens himself and wins their confidence but uses his intelligence to discreetly develop his own network.

Analysis: Finally scoring a limited release in the Us in February, Jacques Audiard's violent and hard-edged prison drama won the Grand Prix at Cannes, scored Best Film at the London Film Festival, and is already the hotly tipped favourite to take the Oscar for Best Foreign Film late next month.

Reviews have been stellar around the world for the film which quickly became the most universally admired entry in the often hotly contentious first week of Cannes back in May. From a breakout performance by Tahar Rahim, »

PBar’s Top 15 of 2009

22 hours ago | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

It’s that time of year. The lists come out, people check to see if their favorite films are on the list, then complain when they’re left off. Moaning also comes when one film is placed too low or too high, and the writer is told he knows nothing of cinema. As should be the preface when reading any review, this is just an opinion and should be treated as such. Unless you didn’t like Avatar. Then you need to have your cinema-going privileges revoked. Kidding…or not?

But back to 2009, which here ranked as one of the better years in film for the decade. From my own personal standpoint, I consider this list to be a nice mix of mainstream and independent film, but that’s up to you, the reader to decide. You can tell me how wrong and stupid I am after I present the »

Sandra Bullock Named Top Box Office Star of 2009

1 January 2010 3:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In an annual Quigley Publishing Company list, Sandra Bullock was named the top box office draw of 2009. The list is not based on strict box office numbers, but on exhibitor polling of what stars they perceive as the biggest theatrical draws. The theatre owners gave the nod to Bullock based on the success of The Proposal (which grossed $315 million worldwide) and The Blind Side (whose domestic take is at $190 million and counting).

It's a strong comeback for the 45-year old actress, whose drawing power has been spotty over the past ten years. Her last starring role before 2009's triple-header (which also included the bomb All About Steve) was in 2007's Premonition, which opened to lukewarm numbers.

Sandra Bullock is the first woman to top the list since 1999, when Julia Roberts took the number one spot. Bullock is followed on the list, in order, by Johnny Depp, Matt Damon, George Clooney, »

Sandra Bullock Top Money-Making Star of 2009

1 January 2010 1:22 PM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Sandra Bullock has been voted the Top Money-Making Star of 2009 in Quigley Publishing Company’s 78th Annual Poll of Exhibitors and is the first female to win since Julia Roberts in 1999. Bullock is the eighth woman chosen #1 in the Poll’s 78 year history. She appeared in three films in 2009, “The Blind Side,” “The Proposal” and “All About Steve.”

Johnny Depp placed second this year based on “Public Enemies” and a small role in “The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.” He was #1 in 2006 and 2007. Matt Damon made his second appearance in the survey, placing #3 with 2009 roles in “Invictus” and “The Informant!” Although George Clooney, placing #4, has never won in his seven mentions in the Poll, he had an extremely productive year with “Up in the Air,” “The Men Who Stare at Goats” and “Fantastic Mr. Fox“(voice). Robert Downey Jr.’s performances in “Sherlock Holmes” and “The Soloist” helped him place #5. He »

The Observer interview: Rupert Friend

1 January 2010 6:46 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

He's been feted for his appearances with Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer and is soon to open in the West End. Yet the media only want to discuss his relationship with Keira Knightley. No wonder he is wary says Elizabeth Day

Rupert Friend already knows how this interview is going to be written. "You start off with a humorous anecdote about meeting me," he says, as if reciting a shopping list. "Then you end on something that neatly refers back to the beginning. It's so boring." He sits back in his chair, a small smile on his face.

It seems fair to say that Friend, 28, has developed a fairly healthy contempt for journalists. He tells me that he refuses to read any newspapers because they are saturated with meaningless celebrity trivia and he seems to believe most of us who work for them are hopelessly ignorant. At one point, when »

Forget Pitt and Depp, the Star of 2009 is Sandra Bullock (According to Movie Theater Execs)

31 December 2009 6:14 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

There aren't many genuine movie stars left. Will Smith is one. There are arguments for George Clooney, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt, but none of those three can reliably open a movie the way Smith can. Until the second half of this year it seems unlikely that anyone would have argued for Sandra Bullock as a genuine star. She hadn't been in a feature since 2007's The Premonition, and she hadn't been in a big feature for a few years prior to that. But two of her three films in 2009 did massive business, with The Blind Side qualifying as a genuine surprise hit. That performance led a group of theater-owning execs to name Sandra Bullock as the top-earning star of 2009. The Quigley Publishing Company (No relation to our own Adam Quigley) generates a couple of giant industry bibles every year (the International Motion Picture Almanac and the International Television and »
