That girl from Clueless – Brittany Murphy's sparky performance in the greatest of teen movies

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Towards the end of last week, as a kind of by-product of talking about the top films of the noughties, some colleagues and I found ourselves talking about those Hollywood actors who were big or biggish at the beginning of the decade, but of whom we suddenly realise we had heard not quite so much.

One of these, grimly, was Brittany Murphy, who has died of a heart attack at her Los Angeles home at the age of 32. Thanks to what appear to be its hyper-alert network of informants among the emergency services, TMZ.com got the story first.

Murphy had in fact been working steadily despite a reputation for being difficult and having left a production due to "creative differences". Recently, after a whirlwind romance, she married the British-born producer and screenwriter Simon Monjack, from whom she appeared to have picked up something of a British accent.

Her death …

Britanny Murphy obituary

4 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

From age five she was determined to be a Hollywood star

It has become something of a Hollywood formality that any young woman actor fresh on the scene is pencilled in to play Janis Joplin sooner or later. Brittany Murphy, who has died aged 32 from cardiac arrest, was one of many performers over the years who were attached to some Joplin biopic or another.

In this case, it was Piece of My Heart, for which Murphy auditioned successfully in 1999, but which was never made. It certainly was not much of a stretch to imagine her evoking the gusto and vulnerability required for that part.

Murphy was no run-of-the-mill star. In her first substantialrole, as a greenhorn mentored by the coolest girl in school in the 1995 hit Clueless, she proved herself an inventive comedienne. She demonstrated her versatility in dramatically intense films such as Girl, Interrupted and 8 Mile. She claimed to …

Brittany Murphy: a life in clips

The Clueless and Sin City actor has died of a heart attack aged 32. We look back at her key roles on film

Brittany Murphy was not one of the world's great actors. Nor, in recent years, was she even especially visible. But she was a performer of immense charm, with a knockout smile and a chuckling, bee-bop voice it was difficult not to be won over by.

For a spell in the early 90s, Murphy established herself as one of Hollywood's freshest, most engaging mainstream leads – a doll-eyed ditz with a hint of vaguely filthy goofiness. She was Scarlett Johansson a half-generation older: she shared that actor's old-school Hollywood glamour, the big curves on a little frame, and the brains behind the fluff. Both even had singing careers. But while Johansson teamed up with some solid mentors, and got films of real credibility under her belt, Murphy struggled to cement a career that, …

Remembering Brittany Murphy

Actress Brittany Murphy passed away Sunday at the age of 32. Perhaps best known for her work in '8 Mile,' 'Girl, Interrupted,' and 'Clueless,' Murphy was a longtime industry veteran with dozens of credits. She first appeared on TV shows like "Kids Incorporated," "Drexell's Class," and "Parker Lewis Can't Lose," later starring on the big screen, appearing alongside actors including Angelina Jolie, Michael Douglas and Ashton Kutcher. Her film credits in addition to those mentioned above include 'Sin City,' 'Little Black Book,' 'Just Married," "Don't Say a Word,' 'Riding in Cars with Boys,' 'Uptown Girls,' and 'Sidewalks of New York.' The actress was also the longtime voice of Hank Hill's niece Luanne Platter on Fox's "King of the Hill," and also voiced a character in the animated film 'Happy Feet.' Murphy said in a 2004 interview …

Singing and acting, but not at the same time – Zeta-Jones falters on Broadway

14 December 2009 1:54 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Playing the daughter to Angela Lansbury's ancient mother, the Hollywood star is unconvincing as a rejected lover

Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, directed by Trevor Nunn and the biggest opening in New York this season, is a tough gig for a Broadway debut, even for a movie star who won an Oscar for Chicago. With its complex score and no conventional showstoppers, it requires the skills of a seasoned stage actor. And while Catherine Zeta-Jones can act and sing, she can't do both at once in this production – at least not in one take.

The show is a musical interpretation of Ingmar Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night, a tangle of love affairs and mistaken intentions set in Sweden at the turn of the last century. It is also a study of self-consciousness, which sadly for its star is not the same thing as being self-conscious. …

Curtain Rises for Catherine Zeta-Jones on Broadway

Screen gems Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury are taking the stage of The Great White Way in "A Little Night Music." "The Insider" was there for opening night on Sunday. Catherine was happy to debut the production in front of her supportive family, including husband Michael Douglas. She told "The Insider" how the stage compares to the screen: "It's just really different. You can never ever, ever get that immediacy that you get on stage, live theatre. It's just something that I've missed…and now that I'm doing it again, I've realized how much I enjoy it and how much us actors enjoy that applause." The legendary Angela Lansbury praised her co-stars, saying, "The company was very up tonight and Catherine Zeta-Jones was just superlative, so we hope that we have a lovely hit on our hands." It’s The 80’s Again: Romancing The Stone & Overboard Remakes

11 December 2009 12:46 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Almost exactly a year ago, we brought you news that 20th Century Fox was remaking the Michael Douglas adventure film, Romancing The Stone ,with Eagle Eye’s Daniel McDermott penning the script. Now the film has a director in the form of  The Ugly Truth’s Robert Luketic (insert personal opinion here).

To make matters worse, it also seems like Hollywood is about to remake the 1987 Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn romantic team-up, Overboard!

It looks like the Romancing The Stone remake will hit the big-screen first, as the producer of the film, Emma Watts, was recently named  President of Production at 20th Century Fox. With Luketic involved, one would imagine that the comedy quota of the remake will be ramped up and the adventure angle will be … er… god knows, really!

In the original Rts, Douglas played a fortune-hunter who becomes involved with Katheleen Turner’s romance novelist in …

Zeta-Jones' Birthday Puppy

10 December 2009 11:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Catherine Zeta-Jones was treated to a brand new puppy for her 40th birthday after dropping big hints to her husband Michael Douglas.

The Hollywood stars have relocated their family from Bermuda to New York while the actress performs in Broadway play A Little Night Music and Douglas shoots Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps in Manhattan.

But the move meant Zeta-Jones had to leave behind her beloved menagerie of pets - so Douglas decided to surprise the Chicago star with a new pooch on 25 September, the same day the actor celebrated his 65th birthday.

She says, "I've a bit of my own zoo, I left four of my Labradors there (in Bermuda). But my husband actually, for my birthday, I was desperate for a little Coton De Tulear dog. He's the sweetest little thing, he's only six months old." …

Zeta-Jones Proud Of Daughter's Stage Debut

Catherine Zeta-Jones' daughter is to make her stage debut in a school production of Annie, taking on the same role that inspired the Oscar winner to pursue a career in acting 31 years ago.

Six-year-old Carys, Zeta-Jones' youngest child with husband Michael Douglas, will follow in her famous parents' footsteps when she takes the lead in the school musical - and the Chicago star couldn't be more proud.

She says, "My daughter is about to embark on her first school production, Annie."

Zeta-Jones first appeared on stage at the age of nine, portraying the lovable orphan in a local production in her native Swansea, Wales.

But Carys isn't the only one to continue in the Douglas family trade - her nine-year-old brother Dylan is also showing promise.

Zeta-Jones adds, "They've both got their parents' genes." …

Rgv turns romantic for Ranbir

Ram Gopal Varma will stay away from horror and thriller for sometime as he plans to adapt a 1984 romance-fantasy caper Romancing The Stone with Ranbir Kapoor. Ranbir will replicate the role of Michael Douglas in the movie. Admits Ramu to a news daily, "We have met and Romancing The Stone was one of the ideas that we exchanged. Ranbir seemed enthusiastic about it. But it won't exactly be Romancing The Stone. Only the core of its idea will be taken." Well Ramu, we hope the change would bring laurels for you! …

'Ugly Truth' Director May Romance the Stone

9 December 2009 8:04 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Ready for two more 80s movies revivals? Pajiba says Romancing the Stone is getting an update, which isn't exactly news, but it was dormant for almost a year before news of a remake went anywhere. Now the scuttlebutt is that Robert Luketic might direct, which has to thrill you no end.

Pajiba overstates it when saying Luketic is "the worst director in Hollywood," although I'm certainly not a fan. 21 was better than I thought going in, as was Legally Blonde, but and Monster-in-Law were not very good. The problem with a remake like this, not that it should be off-limits for any overriding reason in particular.

However, good luck matching the chemistry between Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. I mean, seriously. That was a once-or-twice-in-a-generation pairing that peaked a couple of times, in the original and, of course, War of the Roses. That brings up another point: Good luck matching …

'Romancing the Stone' Moves Towards Production

8 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Last December we reported that 20th Century Fox had hired Daniel McDermott (Eagle Eye) to write a remake of the 1984 Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner film, Romancing the Stone. We were a tad snide with our editorializing.

With increasingly good reason, it would seem. Pajiba is reporting that the film is moving forward, and that Robert Luketic (Legally Blone, The Ugly Truth) could be tapped to direct the project. Luketic is perhaps not the most respected director in Hollywood. As Pajiba describes it: He directed The Ugly Truth and Monster-in-Law, two very bad movies that apparently allowed him to fall on his ass backwards up the Hollywood ladder.

Luketic also has Barbarella in development, a film in which few seem to have any confidence, chiefly because of his involvement.

All of which begs the question: Why bother with this Romancing the Stone remake at all, since it's likely to be just …

The Ugly Truth Director Luketic Eyes Romancing The Stone Remake

8 December 2009 2:03 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Fans of Romancing the Stone-- which includes pretty much everyone raised in the 80s-- are assuming the worst today, having heard the news over at Pajiba that Robert Luketic is likely to direct the remake of the 1980s film. The jump-to-conclusions fear is that Luketic would cast the stars of his last film The Ugly Truth in the lead roles, meaning that the duo of Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner would be replaced by Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl. Blech, I know. But really, there's no reason to assume he'll cast them and not the pair from his earlier movie Monster-in-Law-- that would be Michael Vartan and Jennifer Lopez-- or even the two leads in his next film Killers, Heigl and Ashton Kutcher. There are limitless ways that this could be awful! What's clear, though, is that by hiring Luketic the producers are going for straight middle-of-the-road …
