Producers Guild Announces 2010 Nominations

10 hours ago | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

The Producers Guild of America announced their nominations on Tuesday for the top films (and producers) of 2009, and there were a few science fiction surprises.  The list of films vying for the Darryl F. Zanuck award, or Best Picture, has expanded to 10 in order to match the Academy’s new rule this year, which allowed for District 9, Avatar, and Star Trek to all share in the geek glory together.  The rest of the field resembles how the Oscar list will likely look in February with many of the usual suspects and Oscar front-runners (Hurt Locker, Up in the Air) picking up a nomination.

The PGA award has matched the Academy’s “Best Picture” 13 out of the 20 years since the guild was formed, including forecasting the last three years in a row.  Disney/Pixar’s Up is the first animated film nominated for best overall feature.  As for the animation and documentary categories, »

Sci-Fi Tops Off the 2010 Producers Guild Nominees

13 hours ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Perhaps the biggest surprise with this morning's announcement of the 2010 Producers Guild Nominees is the inclusion of not just Avatar, but the fact both District 9 and Star Trek made their list of ten films vying for the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award.

Along with those three we also have the rest of the Oscar front-runner elite. I have included the complete list below. I'm not sure I would say the winner at the PGA Awards makes for a guaranteed Best Picture winner at the Oscars. Althought the last two Best Picture winners (Slumdog Millionaire and No Country for Old Men) also won the PGA, it's a mixed bag after that with 13 of the 20 Producers Guild winners going on to win the Oscar since 1990.

The complete list of nominees is below and the PGA will announce the winner January 24 in a ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium based on voting by its 4,200 members. »

Producers Guild of America (PGA) Reveals Nominations

16 hours ago | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

The Producers Guild of America has chosen ten films as nominees for its Best Picture award. The winner will be announced Jan. 24 at the Hollywood Palladium.

I'm proud to say that besides "A Serious Man," their choices of their 10 film nominees are similar to my Top 10 Best Films of 2009. :happy

The PGA opted to expand their nominees to 10 in response to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences 10 Best Picture nominees.

Oscar watchers take note -- the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award -- has matched the Oscar Best Picture in 13 of its 20 years. So the film that will win the PGA has a strong chance of winning the Oscars.

Here are the nominees of the 2010 2010 Producers Guild Of America Awards:

Darryl F. Zanuck Producer Of The Year Award In Theatrical Motion Pictures:

"Avatar"

Producers: James Cameron, Jon Landau

Clint Eastwood or George Clooney?

4 January 2010 6:05 PM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

A Clint Eastwood flick would make a better film to star in than a George Clooney rom com, say most Americans in an online poll. A veteran actor and director, Eastwood won out over the wildly popular Clooney for 20 percent of the respondents who were asked what kind of film they would like to star in. The choice, however, may have defeated some women, since both Eastwood and Clooney are heart-throb material. Clooney came in at 18 percent, while Cameron Diaz also scored 18 percent. She was followed by the choices of: an action movie with Will Smith, a comedy with Will Farrell or a drama with Meryl Streep. The 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair survey also found »

Our own experts -- the forum moderators -- predict Golden Globe winners: Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep & Robert Downey Jr.

4 January 2010 4:36 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Unlike the 19 pro pundits who weighed in with Golden Globe predictions, 7 of our forum moderators think that the main competition for "Up in the Air" as best drama picture is "Inglourious Basterds" rather than "Avatar."  While the pros were almost evenly divided as to the winner of the drama movie actress -- with a slim majority going with Carey Mulligan ("An Education") -- our moderators are firmly on the side of Sandra Bullock ("The Blind Side"). Neither the pros nor the moderators can agree on who will win drama movie actor or comedy/musical movie. As with all but one of the pros, our moderators agree that Meryl Streep ("Julie & Julia") will win comedy/musical movie actress. However, almost all of our moderators are backing Robert Downey Jr. ("Sherlock Holmes") to win comedy/musical movie actor while the pros spread their predictions around all five contenders.

Box Office: ‘Avatar’ Surpasses A Billion

4 January 2010 9:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Well, it is the first box office recap of 2010, and it looks like I’ll be dropping  the “B” word, as in “Billion.”  Avatar sailed over the billion dollar mark in only its third week in release. Thanks to this worldwide total, it now sits comfortably at the  number four position of highest grossing movies of all time, right behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

It has already exceeded the total that took The Dark Knight its entire theatrical run to achieve, and Avatar has shown no signs of  slowing down. The movie dropped less than 10% from last weekend and made $68.3 Million, bringing its domestic total to over $352 Million.

There was plenty of box office love to go around this weekend, and several movies did exceptionally well. Sherlock Holmes added another $38.3 Million to its two week total, which now stands at over $140.7 Million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel made $36.6 Million, »

Summer is Chile

Patagonia, Chile -- Forget April in Paris, I just did New Year's in Patagonia. Like the song says, "How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm after they've seen Paree?" So, after you've done the Caribbean, the Paris-London-Rome routine, plus Australia and Africa, then knocked off Eastern Europe, the Far East, Near East, Middle East, East St. Louis and every East but Clint Eastwood -- what's left? Chile. I am, as we speak, in downtown Patagonia, South America's furthest southernmost tip. Two more inches and you're an icefloat off Antartica. »

Avatar Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide in 17 Days

3 January 2010 1:42 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Avatar is now the fourth-highest grossing movie of all time.

20th Century Fox’s crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, passing 2008’s The Dark Knight ($1B) and gaining quickly on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($1.07B) and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King ($1.12B).  The astonishing feat was accomplished in just 17 days in theaters.

At the domestic box office, James Cameron’s epic repeated for a first place finish three consecutive weekends.  Competing with no new openers and audiences hung over from New Year’s Eve, Avatar made an estimated $68.3 million (only a 10% drop).  It set the record for the highest New Year’s Day (Friday) at $25.3M, which helped the 3-D movie blow by the $300 million mark in just 15 days.  It’s current U.S. total sits at $352.1 million, the second largest for movies released in 2009 and the second fastest to the $350M milestone. »

Michael Haneke, Supreme Confounder

A mssg received from my friend 'txt critic' today.Lincoln Plaza is the Worst! Half of my audience was literally snoring through "The White Ribbon" -- in unison! -- and one half-deaf woman bellowed an hour in, 'I Thought This Had To Do With The Holocaust.'

I swear Uws seniors ruin more movies than anyone.I wasn't there but I can attest to this phenomenon. You will always get a perturbed earful when you see a Haneke picture on the Upper West Side. Should we presume the AMPAS members on the foreign film nominating committee will feel just as impatient with its mysteries and its implicitly projected "25 years later..." horror? Ao Scott certainly didn't boost this Cannes Winner's Oscar cause with his recent review either.

But then I'm not currently speaking to Ao anyway. He disses Haneke's always provocative direction just two weeks after raving about Clint Eastwood's work on Invictus? »

Movie News Wrap Up: January 03, 2010

3 January 2010 12:42 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Welcome to the first Wrap Up of 2010. It’s been a quiet week movie news wise, so there isn’t a great deal to report except:

Avatar is still number one at the box office; Mel Gibson is involved in Mad Max 4; Whitaker, Winstone and Li visit St Vincent with Mickey Rourke.

Box Office

James Cameron must be a very happy man. Avatar has now crossed the $300 million marker at the U.S. box office – with $350 million now in the bank. The film now has $1 billion in global ticket sales and even with the budget for the film and marketing being mooted as high as $500 million it has now sailed into the waters marked profit on the map.

Sherlock Holmes was number 2 again with a respectable $38 million gross, giving the Robert Downey Jr adventure film an impressive $140 million total.

Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel banked another $37 million for a huge $158 million total. »
