Avatar Box Office: Solid Grosses on Non-Holiday Monday

15 hours ago | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Stephen Lang, Sam Worthington in Avatar (Mark Fellman / 20th Century Fox) James Cameron’s Avatar continues to keep the domestic box office abuzz even if overall figures have dropped dramatically now that the year-end holiday season is over. The sci-fi adventure epic earned an estimated $8.1 million on Monday, a 53.4 percent drop from Sunday according to Box Office Mojo. Avatar’s total domestic take currently stands at $360.2m. Partly thanks to inflation and 3D/IMAX surcharges, Avatar is now the 14th highest grosser of all time, ahead of Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park (1993, $357.1m) and edging closer and closer to Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ (2004, $370.8m). Avatar, which today received a Producers Guild Award nomination, stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, [...] »

Bishop In Gibson's Irish Hometown Asks For Help

17 hours ago | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A Catholic Bishop in Mel Gibson's ancestral Irish hometown has begged the movie star for help after the local cathedral was ravaged by fire.

Gibson was born in New York but moved to Australia at the age of 12, and his Irish roots hail from his mother Anne Reilly, who was born in the village of Ardagh in County Longford, Ireland. Gibson was named after a local saint, St Mel, who is commemorated at Longford cathedral, which was devastated in a blaze on Christmas Day.

And now the Bishop has come forward asking the area's most famous son to help with the restoration.

Bishop Colm O'Reilly says, "It would be nice for him to get involved, it certainly would be appreciated. We've never had any contact with him up until now. His name of course, comes from here. Longford people would be positive about such a move. We're all like a big bereaved family at this stage." »

Mel Gibson Goes On ‘Summer Vacation’

4 January 2010 8:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Lately, there seems to be plenty of news in Hollywood surrounding two men: Mel Gibson or Leonardo DiCaprio. And in one case, both of them. But, this post is about Gibson and his newest acting role which will probably take him right up to the time before he gets started on his Viking project with DiCaprio.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation will star Mel as a career criminal who finally gets caught in Mexico. There, he’s sent to a prison and learns to survive with the help of a 9 year old boy. The movie is based off of a script that Gibson wrote and will be directed by Adrian Grunberg, the 1st Assistant Director of his most recent film Apocalypto.

The movie kind of sounds like Empire of the Sun meets The Shawshank Redemption, although I’m sure it’ll be far more gritty and violent than either of those movies combined. »

Is 'Avatar' Star Sam Worthington The New Leonardo DiCaprio?

4 January 2010 2:24 AM, PST | MTV Movie News | See recent MTV Movie News news »

James Cameron made both into billion-dollar movie stars, but can Worthington follow 'Titanic' heavyweight Leo?

By Larry Carroll

Sam Worthington in "Avatar"

At first glance, the pair would seem to be miles apart. Leonardo DiCaprio is arguably the biggest movie star in the world, a three-time Oscar nominee in the prime of his career, a fiercely private all-American actor whose name can get any script the green light. Sam Worthington is an endearingly outspoken British/Australian veteran roughly the same age, positioned as "the next big thing" for some time and only now breaking through with a series of high-profile flicks.

To some, however, history may be repeating itself. A little more than a decade after DiCaprio became a household name with "Titanic," a billion dollars' worth of moviegoers have now seen Worthington's face in "Avatar." With that in mind, here are three reasons »

10 Reasons Why 2010 Looks To Be A Great Year

3 January 2010 6:07 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Wow, 2010 is finally here! The last decade went by incredibly fast. Or at least it seems like it. So much in the entertainment industry has advanced, but there's been several setbacks as well. Superhero and 3D movies appear to be in full swing as well as undesirable remakes and no talents like the Hiltons and Kardashians are famous for absolutely no reason. I think that as the first year of this new decade begins, there's much to look forward to. Well at least for me there is. Despite the many setbacks in the quality of entertainment, I think we're now in an exciting time. Young minds with original and fresh ideas are starting to get their chance to step out and revolutionize things, while the return of the old guard and the familiar can be nostalgic and also bring back a more simplistic time. For 2010 there are many things I look forward to, »

A: A negative representation of the gay community just because they do an episode about an adoptive boy who gets plastic surgery so he’ll look more like his father so it’ll be more of a turn-on for the crowds of rich gay men who watch them perform in their live incest sex show?

Nip/Tuck's disturbing chip off the old block

New TV Spot For The Edge Of Darkness

3 January 2010 5:04 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Continuing today’s apparent theme for new TV spots, the latest clip has been released for the latest Mel Gibson vehicle, Edge of Darkness. Being the second Hollywood film to be adapted from a BBC miniseries in as many years, Edge of Darkness seemingly has as much grit and conspiracy thrown into the mix as one of my favorite films of 2009, State of Play – and that can only be a good thing for sure!

Directed by Martin Campbell, Gibson stars as homicide detective Thomas Craven. When his daughter is gunned down in what appears to be an attempt on his own life, Craven soon finds that the web of lies and deceit is far more tangled than he could’ve imagined and soon finds himself caught in the middle of a massive conspiracy – just my kind of film!

New 'Edge of Darkness' Commercial and UK Banner

3 January 2010 1:00 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Mel Gibson's first starring role in a movie since Signs is Edge of Darkness, which hits theaters in a few weeks. Here's a brand new UK banner for the film from Imp Awards, and we've got the latest TV spot, too.

Pretty basic design, but it's effective enough. What are you selling, really? Mel Gibson and a gun to most people, I'd bet. Actually, in the UK that might be a little different, because this film is a remake of a BBC miniseries from the 1990s, also directed by Martin Campbell. There is also the very real consideration that audiences just don't want to see Gibson anymore, thanks to a decade in the news primarily for the wrong reasons. I don't think we'll see that outcome, but the Lethal Weapon days are probably well behind him.

Still, the film comes from solid source material, has a »

Movie News Wrap Up: January 03, 2010

3 January 2010 12:42 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Welcome to the first Wrap Up of 2010. It’s been a quiet week movie news wise, so there isn’t a great deal to report except:

Avatar is still number one at the box office; Mel Gibson is involved in Mad Max 4; Whitaker, Winstone and Li visit St Vincent with Mickey Rourke.

Box Office

James Cameron must be a very happy man. Avatar has now crossed the $300 million marker at the U.S. box office – with $350 million now in the bank. The film now has $1 billion in global ticket sales and even with the budget for the film and marketing being mooted as high as $500 million it has now sailed into the waters marked profit on the map.

Sherlock Holmes was number 2 again with a respectable $38 million gross, giving the Robert Downey Jr adventure film an impressive $140 million total.

Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel banked another $37 million for a huge $158 million total. »

Mel Gibson Prison Protest a Misunderstanding?

3 January 2010 12:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Was it all a mix-up? Hundreds of people in Veracruz, Mexico protested the filming of Mel Gibson's new movie this week, even before production got underway. As Elisabeth Rappe noted earlier this month, one prison in Veracruz was all set to empty its jail cells and transfer the 1,000 inmates to a new prison under construction nearby so Mel could have the place to himself. (He's financing and producing the project.) That didn't sit too well with the families of prisoners, who are "the only source of food and clean clothing" for inmates, Variety reported; moving inmates would require families to relocate as well. The protests were halted when the prison warden told the families he'd let them know if he got any orders to transfer anybody, according to USA Today, roughly equivalent to 'Don't protest call us, we'll call you.'

You'd think Gibson would know better. He filmed »

New Edge of Darkness TV Spot

3 January 2010 3:13 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Adapted from the 1985 BBC TV series of the same name, Edge of Darkness is easily one of my most anticipated films of 2010 and a new TV spot for it has just been released.

Even though I think Mel Gibson is an amazingly talented director, I am also a fan of his work as an actor. That is why I am glad to see him returning in front of the camera in Martin Campbell’s remake of Edge of Darkness. Gibson will play the lead role of homicide detective Thomas Craven, who is investigating the death of his activist daughter (played by Bojana Novakovic). Joining Gibson and Novakovic are Ray Winstone (The Departed), Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Shawn Roberts (I Love You Beth Cooper), and Gbenga Akinnagbe (The Wire).

Although I do not like the fact that so many Hollywood produced films over this past decade have been remakes, I »

Latest Mel Gibson Movie Draws Protests in Mexico

2 January 2010 3:02 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Mel Gibson has made headlines again for something other than his filmmaking. Well, sort of. His upcoming How I Spent My Summer Vacation has drawn protests from families of inmates at Ignacio Allende prison in the Mexican state of Veracruz, where the film will shoot this spring.

Writes Variety on the situation, "Veracruz Governor Fidel Herrera indicated that inmates would be transferred to an undisclosed location for the duration of the shoot. In Mexico, inmates' families are their only source of food and clean clothing, and a move would require many families to relocate to the new location as well."

The families' outrage peaked over the holidays, when it was believed the prisoners were being moved well before they were initially supposed to be relocated. Demonstrators outside the prison fashioned signs reading, "Don't take them away, they aren't animals" and "Mel Gibson, it's your fault they are moving our family members. »

Latest Mel Gibson Movie Prompts Protests

1 January 2010 11:24 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Ever since his notorious Malibu tirade, Mel Gibson can't seem to steer clear of controversy. Recently spotted in Veracruz, Mexico, the intended location for part of his next movie, How I Spent My Summer Vacation, Gibson was the target of a large contingent of protestors last weekend.

Veracruz Governor Fidel Herrera announced last month that inmates at one prison were going to be shipped off to an undisclosed location to accommodate Gibson's shoot. According to Variety, when officers were seen taking pictures outside the prison on Sunday, upwards of 300 friends and family members of inmates gathered outside, protesting and waving signs, some of which read, "Mel Gibson, it's your fault they are moving our family members" and "Don't take them away, they aren't animals."

Monthly Movie Preview – January 2010

1 January 2010 2:02 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

The most distressing month in America probably isn’t November or December, when the big Oscar dogs come out in full force with their pride on their sleeves, only to be shot down or embraced by critics or audiences alike. I’d argue the most stressful month in Hollywood is the wet fart that is January, where Hollywood exhales whatever material it has left over from summer or fall or dates, or even worse, releases material not “fit” for either. While the holiday season apparently works like “everyday is Saturday” for the box office, January is the opposite – everyday is like Tuesday morning. The motivation to see movies isn’t there as much.

However, movies have always provided a safe haven for its returning viewers. As some of you may know, this was a great year for the American box office. I’m sure some of that enthusiasm is going to continue, »
