Best Films Of The Decade (aka The Naughties) From Alex & Terry
List # 1
By Alex Simon
When Terry and I initially discussed writing these lists, I had a tough time thinking back on 20 films over the past decade which I was really taken with, thinking that movies have sunk so low over the past ten years, that even choosing a dozen would be a short-order job. Thirty minutes into it, my list had nearly 60 titles! After much cutting, pasting, and re-cutting and pasting, here are my top 20 films (in no particular order) of the first decade of the 21st century, dubbed by many as “the naughties.” --A.S.
1.No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers, 2007) An elegiac blend of stark beauty and full-throttle despair from two of our finest filmmakers, set in the contemporary American West. Every frame is damn near flawless, and would have been an even more perfect vehicle for the late Sam Peckinpah. »

Robert here, continuing my series of the directors that shaped the past 10 years. This week’s directors have achieved new heights critically and commercially in the past ten years. They may be (collectively) the greatest director(s) of the decade. I speak of: Joel and Ethan. The Coen Brothers.
Number of Films: Seven
Modern Masterpieces: Two. No Country for Old Men and A Serious Man.
Total Disasters: The Ladykillers has maybe a few good things going for it.
Better than you remember: Burn After Reading was very much a love-it-or-hate-it film. If you hated it, it’s far better than you remember.
Awards: Director and Picture Oscars for No Country for Old Men
Box Office: That film is also their best performer w/ over 75 mil.
Critical Consensus: ...and received their most consistent raves.
Favorite Actor: If you said George Clooney, you’d be right! Also Stephen Root and Richard Jenkins. »

It’s hard to believe that 14 years have passed since animation upstart Pixar dared to challenge big papa Disney in the animated feature film genre by releasing their Ggi animated masterpiece, Toy Story. Until 1995, there had never been a feature-length CGI film released and it was a big gamble by Pixar to make one. It was a gamble, however, that paid off for them big time. Four years later, Pixar released Toy Story 2 – which was just as big a hit – and not long after that Pixar got bought up by Disney.
Pixar is still considered to be the standard by which all CGI films are gauged against and with films like Wall-e, Cars and Monsters, Inc., they are sure to stay on top. Next up for Pixar is Toy Story 3 and judging by the teasers and trailer that have been released, this third installment is going to be just as popular. »

Penguins, Nicole Kidman and Narnia – Paul Howlett picks his film highlights
Christmas Eve
(Tim Johnson, Karey Kirkpatrick, 2006) 4.25pm, BBC1
A DreamWorks animated adventure in which Rj, the cynical racoon (laconically voiced by Bruce Willis) teaches a burrowful of innocent woodland animals to forage off the waste of an encroaching housing estate rather than rely on boring old natural food, before inevitably seeing the error of his ways. Plenty of good slapstick fun for kids and cine-literate gags for adults, although it all seems a bit glib compared to Shrek and co.
(Tim Burton, Mike Johnson, 2005) 6pm, ITV1
Life, in Burton's typically weird and ghoulish fantasy, is a dull, grey affair: death is much more colourful and fun, as young Victor (voiced by Johnny Depp) discovers when he is whisked into the underworld by the maggoty Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter). Trouble is, he's in love »

The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Turned to dust and painful memories. My advice to you this coming New Year? »

It was destined to happen even before Dan Brown’s behemoth novel The Lost Symbol hit the bookshelves across the globe in September. The vast sums of money generated from the two previous adaptations make it obvious to continue with the adventures of Robert Langdon.
The Da Vinci Code despite it being dull and preposterous, made a shed-load of cash. Its curiosity value and Catholic-baiting controversy ensured box office takings were gigantic. Earlier this year, Angels and Demons did much less business in the Us, but worldwide did more than enough (to the tune of over $350 million)
Cinema Blend are reporting Columbia Pictures are getting set to begin pre-production for next year with a tentative release date in 2012. And yes, Tom Hanks will be returning as Professor Langdon for lots more murder, mystery, terrible dialogue and inane plot devices set in the heart of Washington D.C.

There is plenty of money to be made with or by or through Robert Langdon, so Tom Hanks and possibly Ron Howard will go at it again with The Lost Symbol. Collectively, The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons made Columbia/Sony about $1.2 billion around the world, and in fact, the foreign markets are where these films are more aggressively targeted, so even if they don't blow up in the Us, the studio is fine with that.
Cinema Blend reports this week that the film is close to beginning the pre-production phase, which from the sounds of it, will take quite a while; Sony is looking at a 2012 release date.
I don't know a thing about the book. I tried reading Da Vinci when it was the biggest thing in the world, discovered for myself Dan Brown writes worse dialogue than a truck stop men's room graffitist, and quickly put it away. »

Damn this looks so good! Whenever Pixar makes a movie, they create a color script as well, sort of a visual guide to the color of the movie and how it plays throughout the story. If you've ever seen photos of the Pixar building, they cover an entire wall with this art in order to show animators what the entire movie looks like. Disney has released six new shots of color script for Toy Story 3 on various websites: Upcoming Pixar, The Pixar Blog, and PixarTalk. I've pulled all six pieces together for your viewing below. They all look like they come from the first act of the movie, so there's no spoilers. The little bit of story we do get looks wonderful. Woody, Buzz, and the rest of their toy-box friends are all dumped in a day-care center after their owner, Andy, departs for college. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, »

A couple of Pixar-dedicated sites – Pixar Talk, Pixar Planet and Pixar Blog – all snagged exclusive Toy Story 3 script art, rewarded to them by the studio they love.
The script art consists of some full-color sketches that will likely serve as the blueprint for actual scenes that turn up in the finished film. They’re quite gorgeous (even as broad-stroked sketches) and are definitely worthy of a look.
The pics show off such funny and/or touching moments as Andy, now all grown up, still showing affection for his beloved playthings; Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz (Tim Allen) shaking hands; the toys lining up for duty call by commander Woody; and even the toys sitting back to watch TV together. Only in a Toy Story flick…
Since they’re exclusives, I’ll just provide a quick preview of a few of the sketches – you can click on any one for »

While details are sketchy at best, Tom Hanks appears ready to play Robert Langdon again.
Hanks, who portrayed the professor of religious iconology and symbology in ’06’s The Da Vinci Code and it’s follow-up, ’09’s Angels & Demons, is expected to return to a third entry in the series, The Lost Symbol.
“[He is] all but ready to return to the character of Robert Langdon,” said a source.
According to CinemaBlend, Columbia Pictures is looking to fast-track the project for a 2012 release. There’s no official word from Hanks’ camp nor has director Ron Howard announced his return to helm a third film based on Dan Brown’s popular series of novels.
The thing is, even though Angels & Demons was barely a blip here in America, it made $350 million internationally. There’s still tons of money to be made here and Columbia is willing to keep spending to make more movies. The Lost Symbol is coming. »

Avatar might be blue, but it sees green; Wild Hogs 2 runs out of gas; Bruce Willis sees Red in October; Steven Spielberg saddles up a War Horse and Segal joins a Neighborhood Watch.
Box Office
We all knew that it was going to happen – James Cameron’s Avatar snagged the top spot at the box office and banked a heavy $73 million. The gross is impressive considering that the weather in North America was terrible over the weekend. Factoring in foreign grosses the film has now scored over $232 million – if the legs are good, this could be Cameron’s second billion dollar grosser.
The Princess and the Frog had to settle for the runner-up spot. The film dipped just under 50% for a $12.5 million total. The total gross for the Disney film is now $44 million, with $100 million still an option.
America’s Sweetheart Sandra Bullock was in the third spot with The Blind Side. »

Earlier this year we learned that Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown.s third book, The Lost Symbol is being turned into a movie at Columbia Pictures. What we didn.t know at the time was whether Hanks would be involved and, in light of the general disinterest in the second Code movie Angels & Demons, you might think they.d have second thoughts about doing it at all. Not so, according to our sources. Word is that The Lost Symbol is close to starting pre-production and the studio still plans to fast track it for a 2012 release date. Most importantly, we.ve heard that Tom Hanks is .all but ready to return to the character of Robert Langdon.. Far less certain however is the involvement of Ron Howard as director, though more often than not money talks and Columbia Pictures has plenty to spend. The thing is, even though Angels »

Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 3 looks more and more amazing with each new footage we get to see. The film seems to be retaining everything we loved about the previous adventures, while feeling fresh enough to captivate both old and new fans. While this extended clip was supposed to air on ABC during a special airing of The Incredibles, it has now found it’s way onto the web for your repeat and/or enjoyment.
Without spoiling anything, it looks like the third film in the Toy Story franchise will center around Andy going away to college, and how Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen), and the rest of the toy gang deal with a now uncertain future.
Toy Story 3 will be in theaters and IMAX 3D on June 18th. In the meantime, check out the new clip after the jump, thanks to our pals at ComingSoon.net, introduced by director Lee Unkrich. »

Fed up with the cold weather and the slippy pavements? Well, you can brighten your day a little thanks to a fantastic new clip from Toy Story 3.
Originally scheduled to be shown on American TV, the clip has popped up online early, so consider it a form of premature Christmas present. Following a brief introduction from director Lee Unkrich, the video shows Tom Hanks' Woody seperated from his plastic buddies and about to embark on yet another brilliantly realised rescue mission.
Take a look below and don't forget to give us your opinions in the usual place...
