Grinch Named Worst Christmas Movie Ever

6 hours ago | WENN | See recent WENN news »

How The Grinch Stole Christmas has been named the Worst Christmas Movie of all time in a new online poll.

Editors at Moviefone.com have compiled their top festive flops, and crowned the Ron Howard-directed 2000 release top of the pile.

Explaining their decision, a spokesperson for the site tells WENN, "A loud, garish and obnoxious film, certainly a career low for director Ron Howard - and it's not exactly Jim Carrey's finest hour (or two), either."

The top 10 is as follows:

1. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

2. The Santa Clause 3 (2006)

3. Deck the Halls (2006)

4. Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)

5. Four Christmases (2008)

6. Surviving Christmas (2004)

7. Jingle All the Way (1996)

8. Christmas with the Kranks (2004)

9. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964)

10. Reindeer Games (2000). »

No 'Tears' for Bryce Dallas Howard with 'Eclipse' on the way

13 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

It's no exaggeration to say that Bryce Dallas Howard has had quite a strange road to "stardom."  Especially considering she's the daughter of Oscar-winning director Ron Howard. Her big break came in M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village" and she followed that up by starring in Lars Von Trier's "Manderlay."  She then reunited with Shyamalan for "Lady in the Water" which was "supposed" to take her to the A-list.  Unfortunately, it was the biggest critical and commercial bomb of the filmmaker's career.  She recovered  bit with raves for her work in Kenneth Branagh's HBO adaptation of William Shakespeare's "As You Like it," »

Penguins, Nicole Kidman and Narnia – Paul Howlett picks his film highlights

Christmas Eve

Over the Hedge

(Tim Johnson, Karey Kirkpatrick, 2006) 4.25pm, BBC1

A DreamWorks animated adventure in which Rj, the cynical racoon (laconically voiced by Bruce Willis) teaches a burrowful of innocent woodland animals to forage off the waste of an encroaching housing estate rather than rely on boring old natural food, before inevitably seeing the error of his ways. Plenty of good slapstick fun for kids and cine-literate gags for adults, although it all seems a bit glib compared to Shrek and co.

Corpse Bride

(Tim Burton, Mike Johnson, 2005) 6pm, ITV1

Life, in Burton's typically weird and ghoulish fantasy, is a dull, grey affair: death is much more colourful and fun, as young Victor (voiced by Johnny Depp) discovers when he is whisked into the underworld by the maggoty Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter). Trouble is, he's in love »

She also discussed the fact that she's never gotten in front of the camera for a film directed by her father, director Ron Howard. Finally, she discussed the way she became a part of Eclipse, saying "I felt really grateful to the cast and to everyone and actually Rachelle [Lefevre] herself ... The Best of the Decade: 2000-2009

23 December 2009 9:56 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

A best of the decade list is an incredible thing to consider. The Aughts were ripe with imagination and originality. The past ten years also came jam packed with many new visionary directors that changed the cinematic landscape forever. Yet, at the same time, it was also a decade wrought with remakes, rip-offs, ten-year late sequels, and films based on preexisting toy properties, comic books, and amusement park rides. George Lucas offended almost everyone by dusting off his Star Wars mythos and adding copious amounts of CGI to it. And Batman, a caped figure in tights who last flourished in the trippy sixties, managed to crawl head and shoulders above the rest at the box office to be crowned king. Thus proving that the so-called "geek" or "fanboy" truly ruled the silver screen over the course of this tumultuous past decade. Today, we look at the ten films that ruled »

Tom Hanks Gears Up For ‘The Lost Symbol’

23 December 2009 9:16 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

It was destined to happen even before Dan Brown’s behemoth novel The Lost Symbol hit the bookshelves across the globe in September. The vast sums of money generated from the two previous adaptations make it obvious to continue with the adventures of Robert Langdon.

The Da Vinci Code despite it being dull and preposterous, made a shed-load of cash. Its curiosity value and Catholic-baiting controversy ensured box office takings were gigantic. Earlier this year, Angels and Demons did much less business in the Us, but worldwide did more than enough (to the tune of over $350 million)

Cinema Blend are reporting Columbia Pictures are getting set to begin pre-production for next year with a tentative release date in 2012. And yes, Tom Hanks will be returning as Professor Langdon for lots more murder, mystery, terrible dialogue and inane plot devices set in the heart of Washington D.C.

'Da Vinci' Sequel 'The Lost Symbol' Taking Shape

23 December 2009 7:02 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

There is plenty of money to be made with or by or through Robert Langdon, so Tom Hanks and possibly Ron Howard will go at it again with The Lost Symbol. Collectively, The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons made Columbia/Sony about $1.2 billion around the world, and in fact, the foreign markets are where these films are more aggressively targeted, so even if they don't blow up in the Us, the studio is fine with that.

Cinema Blend reports this week that the film is close to beginning the pre-production phase, which from the sounds of it, will take quite a while; Sony is looking at a 2012 release date.

I don't know a thing about the book. I tried reading Da Vinci when it was the biggest thing in the world, discovered for myself Dan Brown writes worse dialogue than a truck stop men's room graffitist, and quickly put it away. »

Tom Hanks nears next Dan Brown adaptation ‘The Lost Symbol’

22 December 2009 7:54 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

While details are sketchy at best, Tom Hanks appears ready to play Robert Langdon again.

Hanks, who portrayed the professor of religious iconology and symbology in ’06’s The Da Vinci Code and it’s follow-up, ’09’s Angels & Demons, is expected to return to a third entry in the series, The Lost Symbol.

“[He is] all but ready to return to the character of Robert Langdon,” said a source.

According to CinemaBlend, Columbia Pictures is looking to fast-track the project for a 2012 release. There’s no official word from Hanks’ camp nor has director Ron Howard announced his return to helm a third film based on  Dan Brown’s popular series of novels.

The thing is, even though Angels & Demons was barely a blip here in America, it made $350 million internationally. There’s still tons of money to be made here and Columbia is willing to keep spending to make more movies. The Lost Symbol is coming. »

Tom Hanks Ready To Return For A Third Da Vinci Code

21 December 2009 12:37 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Earlier this year we learned that Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown.s third book, The Lost Symbol is being turned into a movie at Columbia Pictures. What we didn.t know at the time was whether Hanks would be involved and, in light of the general disinterest in the second Code movie Angels & Demons, you might think they.d have second thoughts about doing it at all. Not so, according to our sources. Word is that The Lost Symbol is close to starting pre-production and the studio still plans to fast track it for a 2012 release date. Most importantly, we.ve heard that Tom Hanks is .all but ready to return to the character of Robert Langdon.. Far less certain however is the involvement of Ron Howard as director, though more often than not money talks and Columbia Pictures has plenty to spend. The thing is, even though Angels »

The Decade’s Film: 2005-2009

21 December 2009 7:33 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

It had been a successful decade for the comic book movie, with that trend continuing into the latter half of the decade. Just as looked like the public demand for irradiated heroes looked to be diminishing, with lacklustre showings from the likes of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four, out came Iron Man. Coupled with a brilliant script and an excellent performance from Robert Downey Jr as the titular zillionaire industrialist/playboy/freedom fighter/all-round genius, the end result was something truly special. Downey’s career was also revitalised, earning him a role in Tropic Thunder (which would earn him an Oscar nomination). Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk took a similar approach, this time giving Edward Norton of Fight Club fame a shot at getting under the skin of the green goliath.  They set a tough act to follow, but followed they were by one Christopher Nolan. Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.

First Class Writer For X-Men

17 December 2009 10:49 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

As reported yesterday, director Bryan Singer will be returning to the X-Men fold with origins story First Class, based on the limited comics series by Jeff Parker. The Hollywood Reporter has now also announced the film's screenwriter, and it's Jamie Moss.Something of an unknown quantity, Moss has rarely appeared on our radar before: as writer of the quite-good Keanu cop thriller Street Kings, the possible Ron Howard Iraq war project Last Man Home, and as the guy who was replaced by Shutter Island's Laeta Kalogridis for the in-development Dreamworks re-jig of Ghost in the Shell. All swings and roundabouts and par for the course in Hollywood terms though: Moss will himself be replacing The Oc's Josh Schwartz on what seems to be a page-one First Class restart. Poor Josh. He was even offered the director's chair at one point. The story focuses on the early days of the Xavier School For the Gifted, »

Bryce Dallas Howard Joins Clint’s Hereafter

15 December 2009 4:23 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Bryce Dallas Howard has signed on to Clint Eastwood’s next film, Hereafter, a supernatural drama about three separate people affected by death in different ways.  Matt Damon is already on board and filming is underway.

The announcement isn’t clear which role she’ll be playing, but Ron Howard’s daughter is most likely filling the part of Melanie, a love interest to Damon’s character, a factory worker and psychic who can communicate with the dead.

Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, and Peter Morgan are executive producing.  Cecile De France and Lyndsey Marshal also star. What, no room for Clint’s son this time?

Eastwood is a hit or miss director.  2004’s Million Dollar Baby seemed to be the peak of the acting legend’s second career.  Each of his films have rare moments of greatness, but there’s not much of a unique style there aside from pulling memorable performances from the cast. »

Nicole Kidman also stuck with pants for the afternoon together while Marion Cotillard wore a form-flattering dress. Different groups of the movie's many actresses have been attending premieres - Penelope, Fergie and Nicole in La, Kate joining up but no Fergie in London so we'll see which stars make it to tomorrow night's New York screening. Expansion of Oscar's best-picture race to 10: Is it all Harvey's fault?

14 December 2009 8:26 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

"Personally, I think it's a bad idea," Harvey Weinstein said yesterday when we chatted about the widening of Oscar's best-picture race to 10 nominees. "When the category was smaller, it felt like more of an achievement getting in. Now, with 10, it's not going to feel so special." Maybe so, but the expansion may actually be Harvey's fault — that is, if a theory posed by a past Oscar champ (Ron Howard, "A Beautiful Mind") is true. Yesterday Harvey hosted a small, elite lunch in New York with his cast members of "Nine" (Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench) plus media wags and reigning Oscar royalty like Ron Howard at Per Se restaurant »
