Exclusive Interview: Producer Dan Lin on Sherlock Holmes; Plus he Addresses the Brad Pitt Rumors

23 December 2009 10:12 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

With Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes about to get released, it’s time for the final segment of “7 Days with Producer Dan Lin”.  Over the past week we’ve covered all the various projects Lin is developing like the Lego movie and Gangster Squad, his thoughts on the Terminator Salvation ending and what’s up with future movies, what’s up with Bone and Tom and Jerry,  and yesterday was  about the Justice League movie, Suicide Squad, and Stephen King’s It.  But for tonight’s article, we finally get to the reason I got to speak with him in the first place: Sherlock Holmes.

As I have said many times, I loved the film.  It’s got a great script. Fantastic performances from everyone involved.  Amazing chemistry between Jude Law and Downey Jr.. A third act that doesn’t suck.  Action scenes that sell why Sherlock Holmes is Sherlock Holmes. »

Producer Dan Lin on the Justice League Movie, Suicide Squad, and Stephen King’s It

22 December 2009 11:08 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Over the past few days I’ve been posting “7 Days with Producer Dan Lin”.  As I explained in the previous articles, I spoke at length with the Sherlock Holmes producer about not only his latest film, but everything he has in development.  Since the conversation ran so long, I’ve decided to break up the interview into many smaller parts.  I’ve already posted what he said about the Lego movie and Gangster Squad, as well as his thoughts on the Terminator Salvation ending and what’s up with future movies, and yesterday was about the Bone and Tom and Jerry movies.  For today’s article, I’ve got him talking about the Justice League movie, Suicide Squad, Hiding in Time, The Chaser and Stephen King’s It.

Want to know more…hit the jump:

Let’s start with the easy stuff first:  According to Lin, Dave Kajganich is turning »

Collider Goes to Dinner With Mike Judge

21 December 2009 8:20 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

There are two sides to Mike Judge in Hollywood. There’s the TV star, who took a ton of heat but came out as one of the most daring and biting voices of satire in the 1990’s with Beavis and Butthead, and the successful maistream animator with a thirteen season run of the folksy and engaging King of the Hill. Then there’s the film director, who was cajoled into the theatrical Beavis and Butthead Do America, but has worked in live action ever since. He made two films for 20th Century Fox to see them abandoned theatrically, only for both 1999’s Office Space and 2006’s Idiocracy to now be regaled as cult classics. His most recent film, 2009’s Extract did not set the film world afire (Extract is now available on DVD and Blu-ray), but it showed a less biting Judge doing what he does best: everyday life comedy. »

Mike Judge talks 'Extract': Dinner with the 'Beavis and Butt-head' creator

21 December 2009 4:08 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

When I'm offered a dinner with director Mike Judge, there's very little convincing needed.

Not only is Judge responsible for the underrated comedy "Extract"  (available on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, Dec. 22) but he's also the sly genius behind Fox's Emmy-winning "King of the Hill," the 1990s iconic cartoon "Beavis and Butt-head" and one of the best workplace comedies of all time, "Office Space."

It was a cool December evening when my fellow reporters and I descended upon Joe's Restaurant in Venice, Calif., where a custom-designed four-course tasting menu with wine pairings awaited us. With the help of champagne, the conversation kicked off with talk of Comic-Con, which Judge said was filled with "very likable nerds."

Speaking of nerds ...

I am one for taking this picture. Yes, I was seated next to Mike Judge. Okay, my name is misspelled, but still -- Mike Judge!

Our humble director probably caught on »

Top 9 of '09: Unreleased Films

21 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

One of the more amusing debates that arises at year's end is this: When putting together your Top 10 (or  20 or 50) of the year, how do you categorize films that aren't out yet? What if a film came out in its native UK, but hasn't hit the states yet? What if you saw a great horror flick at Toronto, but it hasn't even made it to DVD yet? We offer up our top 9 unreleased films of '09 in alphabetical order. Carriers From a savagely underwhelming theatrical release to a frustrating "rental only" DVD appearance, this fine piece of apocalyptic horror has been shafted on almost every front. (But hey, Stephen King dug the flick, so that's something...) So consider this our "trying to »

Fangoria Comic Screams Holiday Gift List - Bad Planet

Bad Planet– Limited Black and White Hardcover Edition | Raw Entertainment Studios http://www.raw-studios.com/

Written by Thomas Jane and Steve Niles | Art by James Daly III, Lewis Larosa, Tim Bradstreet, and Dave Kendall

It’s Saturday. A little after 1pm, and I’m flipping through the channels like a speed demon looking for a visual sensation. After going through 100 plus channels, something occurs to me that I’m not necessarily thinking about, but more like a trigger effect from all the reality shows, fix it yourself home improvement clips, and boring news channels. The surprise on this Saturday is that I didn’t stumble upon a classic science fiction movie. Not that I watch much television on a Saturday afternoon as it is, but I know most of my childhood and teenage years, I’d flip through the channels and fall into a War Of The Worlds or It Came From Outer Space. »

Book Review: Hell.com

17 December 2009 5:55 PM, PST | The Culture Post | See recent The Culture Post news »

There's no point in denying it: as he advances in his career, Patrick Senécal, a novelist who is often compared to Stephen King, masters more and more his style. In fact, one can look back on Senécal's brilliant career and daresay that his previous novels were a warm up.

Daniel Saul is the CEO of a real estate company and one of the wealthiest businessmen in North America. He's in his early forties, beautiful, tough and intelligent. Besides, Daniel is ruthless against people he regards as "losers" and his competitors. One day, Martin Charron, a freelance investor and former schoolmate, proposes him to become a member of Hell.com, a secret and criminal website that allows its members to do everything they wish in real life. Obviously, Daniel feels that he can't refuse Martin's offer because he considers himself as one of the world's most powerful people. However, as Daniel's »

Finals Week: 'The Ghost as Domestic Inheritance in Ursula Dabrowsky's Film "Family Demons"'

Family Demons: The Ghost as Domestic Inheritance by Donna McRae

Low cinematic genres – (as Clover, Williams and Robin Wood and others) have often pointed out – often handle explosive social material that mainstream cinema is reluctant to touch. — Joan Hawkins (1)

Can you make a film about the aftermath of incest and child abuse and its effect on three generations of women in the same family? Would this film contain an inherited ghost running through the narrative that could represent repressed feelings of colonial guilt on another level? Could this film prick the conscience of a nation that might be shuddering in silence for all its past sins? Would you get funding for this film from an Australian funding agency if you didn't have a track record? Would this very serious film fill cinemas, especially Australian ones? Could you get international profile actors to star in your film? Or would Australian film actors like Gracie Otto, »

Bunny and the Bull review

15 December 2009 12:13 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

The Mighty Boosh is the epitome of a polarising comedy. Those who loves the series are insatiable for the adventures of Howard Moon, Vince Noir and the eccentric supporting cast that includes a tiny shaman and a talking gorilla. The camp who avoid the show are those left cold by the idea of a wild bear who is only scared by slap bass. What both parties should be able to agree on though is that The Mighty Boosh is a show consisting of almost train of thought flights of fancy so fantastically weird they could easily buckle under the weight of their own whimsy, leaving the show to crumble into free form anarchy. However, the good ship Mighty Boosh is held together rather masterfully by the stewardship of series director Paul King. Using an idiosyncratic visual, reminiscent of Michel Gondry’s most outlandish work, King was able to craft an »

Finals Week: 'Gender Roles in Scary Movies'

14 December 2009 2:31 PM, PST | Pretty/Scary | See recent pretty-scary news »

Welcome to Finals Week, inspired by real life college finals! We'll have a new academic paper on horror films every day this week!

Gender Roles within Scary Movies by Alex Boles

“What’s your favorite scary movie, Sidney?”

These words haunted American society for at least five years when Scream, Scream 2 and Scream 3 were released in 1996, 1997 and 2000 respectively. At least, the words haunted middle-aged women home alone in their big houses in the middle of nowhere scared to answer the phone at night. The fear and portrayal of women also allowed stereotypes and other characters to form for the future of women roles in scary movies. Sidney, played by Neve Campbell, says at the beginning of the first Scream film after receiving a phone call from one of the killers, that there is no point in watching scary movies because they all display the same representation of women. »

J.J. Abrams' Next Film Could Be A Top Secret Paramount Project

14 December 2009 11:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's easy to see why J.J. Abrams is such a hot commodity after revitalizing the "Mission: Impossible" franchise and making "Star Trek" cool again with last summer's blockbuster reboot. But the director's next voyage might not be with Ethan Hunt or the U.S.S. Enterprise — it could be something wholly unknown.

In a New York Times interview with Paramount Pictures chairman Brad Grey, it's revealed that while Abrams' name is still attached to the "Mission: Impossible" and "Star Trek" franchises in some capacity, the filmmaker's next directorial project might be a new unannounced "tentpole" film.

"We have been wildly ambitious," said Grey of his and Abrams' film plans, which includes the secretive project. "It has much to do with the fact that we are feeling as strong as we are."

In the past, Abrams has said that he probably won't direct "Mission: Impossible 4," and helming a "Star Trek" sequel isn't a certainty, »
