'It's Complicated' review (2.5/5) - Meyers relies too much on sitcom style hijinks.

23 December 2009 5:27 PM, PST | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Hollywood obsesses over the younger demographic. If you are between the ages of 18 and 34, you are golden with them. But if you are older, Hollywood doesn’t care as much for your needs. This way of thinking drives ad rates and in theory moves box offices. It is refreshing that director Nancy Meyers does not adhere to this theory. She had a big hit with middle aged love in “Something’s Gotta Give” in 2003 with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. Meyers is back at it again with “It’s Complicated”. Her protagonists this time are Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. It is a hit and miss type of affair, but works mainly because of the chemistry between Baldwin and Streep. Baldwin and Streep play a divorced couple of ten years Jake and Jane Adler. Jake is now remarried to his much younger former mistress Agness (Lake Bell). Jane »

Joan Rivers is still working for E!

23 December 2009 11:30 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

There have been three constants in this late stage of Joan Rivers' career. First, her project will involve her daughter Melissa. Second, she will work for E! Entertainment. Third, it will involve interviews on the red carpet of some awards show. All three of these are true in her new series of Fashion Police specials for E! Although in this case, Melissa Rivers is a producer and won't generally be appearing on screen.

I remember her best as the voice of Dot Matrix in Spaceballs. I did watch her Comedy Central Roast and found it to be lackluster. After all the plastic surgery, I'm surprised she can even move her mouth anymore. It's frozen in a grin like Jack Nicholson's Joker.

I'm fascinated to know why Joan Rivers' red carpet interviews are so popular that E! keeps asking her back. Does anybody out there watch and like the interviews? »

Hollywood sheds its prejudice

22 December 2009 9:40 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

As Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver win plaudits for their roles as older women in physical relationships with younger men, one of the most enduring barriers in Hollywood's movie-making history is at last being torn down

When a film star seduces someone 20 or 30 years their junior on screen, the audience doesn't bat an eyelid. In fact, it is an established cinema convention. If the older star is a woman, however, public reaction is harder to predict. But now Hollywood, so long accused of sexism because of the way it treats female talent, finally seems prepared to tackle a subject once regarded as beyond the pale: sex and the sixtysomething woman.

Sigourney Weaver, who stars in this month's new sci-fi blockbuster, Avatar, has revealed that in her next film she is to play the lover of an actor little more than half her age. In Cedar Rapids, Weaver, 60, is cast opposite »

Interviews: ‘M*A*S*H’ Up! ‘Trapper John, M.D.’ at the Hollywood Celebrities Show

22 December 2009 4:37 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The film and TV journey of “M*A*S*H” was recently present at the Hollywood Celebrities Show in Rosemont, Illinois. From the film, Elliott Gould and Sally Kellerman were there, as well as Gregory Harrison of “Trapper John, M.D.”

HollywoodChicago.com put the three stars through their interview paces at the event and also asked them to pose for Joe Arce of Starstruck Foto.

The saga of the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, based in Korea during that war, spawned a virtual entertainment industry. The book called “M*A*S*H,” by Richard Hooker (a pseudonym for Dr. Richard Hornberger) was released in 1968 and was a publishing sensation.

The legendary director Robert Altman made his mark with the film version in 1970. And then, of course, the M*A*S*H fate was sealed in the guise of the extremely popular TV sitcom from 1972-1983. So popular was the series, »

Will Ferrell makes like Chazz Reinhold and crashes wedding photo

21 December 2009 9:47 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

In case you didn't know, Will Ferrell is kind of a big deal. That must be why he's gracing my television screen nearly every day this holiday season (thanks to numerous Elf showings) and my New York Times. If you checked out yesterday's Times, you might have been just a bit confused to see a wedding announcement paired with a photo of a smiling couple -- and someone who appeared to be photobombing the pic. No, it wasn't crasher squirrel. It was Will Ferrell himself, who decided to appear in the portrait of the couple, who are both production assistants. »

Paramount Wants More ‘Doc Holliday’

18 December 2009 7:13 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

I’m usually not much for one actor having ownership over a role that’s based on real life figures or one that has had a long lifespan in multiple mediums. As great as Heath Ledger’s Joker is, Jack Nicholson’s interpretation is just as valid, as is Cesar Romero’s.

But here’s the thing: nobody will ever play gunslinger Doc Holliday better than Val Kilmer did in Tombstone. It’s a fact of life, inescapable.

But Paramount doesn’t think so, having just purchased a spec script entitled The Further Adventures of Doc Holliday by Chad St. John. Paramount is apparently looking for another Transformers-esque tentpole film to be spearheaded by producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

It’s likely that Adventures won’t be grounded in reality, as they’re aiming for something more like Pirates of the Caribbean than Tombstone. Variety calls it a “history-based action adventure tale. »

Best of the Decade #9: The Departed (2006)

17 December 2009 10:13 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

As Sean alluded to in another post, I seem to have had a big impact on this list. After I suggested that this film belonged on the list to the other members of Film Junk, it was thrown into the mix. We voted and presto-change-o it's our number 9 on our Best of the Decade list. Yes, The Departed. Based on the Hong Kong classic Infernal Affairs, The Departed has a killer concept. Matt Damon plays Colin, a police officer in the state of Massachusetts who is actually a mole for Boston crime boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). As Colin rises through the ranks of the police force, he tips Frank off along the way and keeps his real boss out of the hands of the law. Colin, however, isn't the only rat. The police have their own mole in Frank's crew: Billy, played by director Martin Scorsese's favourite son, »

Roman Polanski Could Be Back in U.S. by January

16 December 2009 5:47 AM, PST | TheImproper.com | See recent TheImproper.com news »

Fugitive director Roman Polanski could be back in the United States by January to face sentencing for having sex with a 13-year-old girl more than 32 years ago. There is no guarantee, however, that he will serve time in jail. Polanski’s lawyers in Los Angeles are said to be working furiously to prevent jail time for the aging director. Polanski directed and wrote the screenplay for the 1968 horror movie “Rosemary’s Baby,” starring Mia Farrow. Before winning the Oscar for “The Pianist,” he was nominated for best director twice for 1974’s “Chinatown,” starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston and 1979’s “Tess,” which ironically is about an older man’s lust for an underage girl. »

Roman Polanski`s movie to premiere at Berlin

16 December 2009 1:35 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Roman Polanski's latest movie, The Ghost, will premiere at the Berlin film festival in February 2010. The fugitive film director is under house arrest in Switzerland pending the decision of Swiss authorities on whether to extradite him to the Us, where he is wanted on 30-year-old charges. California prosecutors last week called for Polanski to face court in the Us to argue his case for having the charges of unlawful sex with a minor dropped. Polanski, 76, took flight from the Us in 1978 after admitting he had unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl at the house of actor Jack Nicholson, who was away at the time. The Ghost stars Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan »

Tiger Woods' sex life coming to a multiplex near you (Video)

15 December 2009 9:38 PM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Tiger Woods is Mia, reportedly healing with his family in seclusion. The family is allegedly sailing on his $22 Million dollar yacht, "Privacy." His wife, Elin Nordegren, recently purchased a remote Swedish Island house set far away from anything and everything, where its dark most all day and night. Cold and alone. Perhaps a Swedish remake of "The Shining" is going down. Elin would play Jack Nicholson's part, except her axe would be a nine iron or maybe a driver. Woods would play Shelley Duvall, crying and cowering in the bath begging his wife to cease after yet another hooker/party girl/porn star came forth and clarified what sexual acts they did with Tiger for a bit of money »

Exclusive Interview: Stephen Lang (Avatar) - Part I

14 December 2009 10:02 PM, PST | ScreenStar | See recent ScreenStar news »

Stephen Lang is one of those actors: You may not know his name, but you know his face, his voice and, most importantly, you don't easily forget his remarkable performances. Long before Jack Nicholson played Col. Nathan Jessup in the big-screen version of A Few Good Men (1992), Lang originated the role on Broadway. And his film and television credits include Manhunter (1986), Crime Story (TV), Tombstone (1993), the 2001 TV series edition of The Fugitive (he was the one-armed man), The Bronx Is Burning (2007), and more. And he's having a hell of a 2009, with roles in The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009), Public Enemies (2009) and now, the film that may finally help people match a name to that face and voice, James Cameron's sci-fi epic, Avatar (2009). Set for release on Dec. 18, Avatar is a big-budget, high-tech spectacle in which humans threaten the homeworld of the indigenous population, the Na'vi, on a moon called Pandora. »

Decade in Review: 2004 Top Ten

14 December 2009 6:56 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Moving on to 2004. What follows is my original top ten list, based on films released in NYC in 2004. If I have anything new to say that'll be in red after the original text.

Top Ten Runners Up (in descending order): Aviator, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Mean Girls, Maria Full of Grace, The Five Obstructions, Collateral, Goodbye Lenin!, Birth and Closer Yes, I'm absolutely horrified by the rankings now. Nothing about that ranking feels right now. I am most ashamed that Birth was only at number [cough] 19 in its year. In my self-flattering memory I "almost" put it in the top ten despite the then brutal reviews. I was ahead of my time! Oh well... at least I did actually name it the #1 most underappreciated film of the year. At the time I said...

Jonathan Glazer made a significant splash four years ago when his brilliantly acted heist film Sexy Beast »

Clooney is Next of Kin in Payne's 'Descendants'

If production does indeed begin in February, we could see Clooney in a Payne-branded comedy by year's end. The project was set into motion by Fox Searchlight in 2007.  Scripted by Blacklist regulars Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, this is based on the Kaui Hart Hemmings novel, set in Hawaii, the unconventional family drama tells the story of a newly widowed father -- the descendant of landowners and one of the richest men on Oahu -- who takes off with his two rebellious daughters to track down his wife's lover on the island of Kauai. »

Review: Dollhouse - A Love Supreme

11 December 2009 10:10 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

(S02E08) We get double the guest stars in this episode with both Alan Tudyk returning as Alpha and Patton Oswalt returning as Joey Miner. Did anybody else notice that Alpha seemed to be acting just like the Joker, particularly with the mismatched purple ensemble? I'm referring more to the Heath Ledger version than the Jack Nicholson or Cesar Romero versions.

Patton Oswalt is a returning guest and a former engagement of Echo's, but were the others, as well? I suspect so. I think the one that got blown up real good was the motorcycle rider from the pilot episode. I think. It was interesting how one person became so addicted to the Dollhouse that he blew all his money on it. This is your brain on Dollhouse.

Draft excluder: Napoleon - the greatest movie never made?

9 December 2009 9:24 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

In the first of a new fortnightly series, Phil Hoad reviews an as-yet-unfilmed movie script. Today: Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon

This is Draft excluder, the Guardian's fortnightly review of unproduced screenplays. Whether it's the latest hot item that's got the development execs thumb-wrestling over it in the parking lot, or the great unfinishable obsession that has defeated many a director, we'll be dicing it, slicing it and making nice (or not) with it.

Remember: the scripts reviewed here are works-in-progress, and will differ from the finished film.

This week: Napoleon by Stanley Kubrick

The pitch

The rise and fall of history's greatest general by history's greatest director (if you subscribe to Empire magazine). Napoleon dynamite, surely?

The pedigree

Doesn't come any higher, really. In a career that saw a fair few get away, Napoleon became Kubrick's cream cetacean. Having tackled the entire history of humanity in 2001: A Space Odyssey, »

The Wolfman Gets an R-Rating

9 December 2009 8:16 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

This should be good news for horror fans who are already anticipating next year’s adaptation of The Wolfman, starring Benicio Del Toro, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Hugo Weaving and Emily Blunt. Our friends over at Slash Film have gotten word from studio Universal that a final cut of the much-troubled Wolfman adaptation has been handed in by director Joe Johnston (Captain America) and that the studio is happy with what they’re seeing.

Even better, Universal has reportedly decided to go with a longer and more violent R-rated version The Wolfman, which is rumored to be the better than the clipped and neutered version (see how I worked a dog joke in there?)  I’m sure many of us were worried the studio might try to push into the PG-13 market.

Though some of our Screen Rant readers disagree, I still think the second Wolfman trailer showed off what could »

John’s Top Eleven Films of the Decade

6 December 2009 3:47 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

I was just under 11 years old as we entered the 2000s, and in the last decade I have made it my mission to fill the space in my mind that should be reserved for academics to remembering the details of far too many films. In looking back upon this decade, it seems that we’ve had quite a good chunk of time for movies — there are only two years absent on my top ten list: 2000 and 2005, while 2006 is represented by three films. I still cheated, though, by extending my list to eleven entries. Some were just too good to decide between.

I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. And before you start — don’t cry. The Dark Knight isn’t on here.

11. The Royal Tenenbaums – 2001

Spoiler: you’re going to find that comedy is slightly underrepresented on this list, with Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums »

Full of the strange

In September Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland. He faces extradition to the Us, having fled the States in 1978 to avoid being sentenced for unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. The debate about the case has raged ever since. Martin Amis was the first writer to interview Polanski after his flight, meeting him in Paris in 1979 for a magazine article. Here, we publish the encounter in full

When I was being driven to the police station from the hotel, the car radio was already talking about it. The newsmen were calling the police before I was arrested to see whether they can break the news. I couldn't believe… I thought, you know, I was going to wake up from it. I realise, if I have killed somebody, it wouldn't have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But… fucking, you see, and the young girls. Judges want to fuck young girls. »
