Pop culture 2009: The year in lists

Seven of the best random facts of the year

Our seven favourite made-up Tracy Jordan blaxploitation films of the year from 30 Rock are: A Blaffair To Rememblack, Honky Grandma Be Trippin', President Homeboy, Samurai I Amurai, Black Cop/ White Cop ("One does the duty, the other gets the booty"), Black Caveman ("So simple, a black caveman can do it!") Fat Bitch ("She's off the leash!").

The weirdest diss of the Guide we read this year could be found on the parenting website Mumsnet. "They are trying so hard to be trendy, it hurts. It's all American rappers and grimecore." [Cha, *kisses teeth*].

The maddest Hollywood star of the year was Megan Fox. Our fave quote was: "I am pretty sure I am a doppelganger for Alan Alda. I'm a tranny. I'm a man. I'm so painfully insecure. I'm on the verge of vomiting now. I am so horrified that I am here, and embarrassed. …

Rene Russo returns to comic book adaptations, from 'Sable' to 'Thor'

18 December 2009 5:06 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

After twenty-two years, Rene Russo is coming back to properties based on comics.

She's joining the cast of Marvel Entertainment's film Thor, taking on the role of Thor and Loki's mom, Frigga, the Queen of Asgard (Odin's wife). Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the movie also stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster.

Wait a minute-- back to comics?

Yes, Rene Russo's first acting job was in the 1987 ABC series, Sable, based on Jon Sable Freelance by Mike Grell, playing the role of Eden Kendall, complete with 80s hair. If you've never seen it before, well-- why should we suffer alone? Take a look for yourself. First, here's the credits:

Second, we have part one of the pilot.

After that, I'm amazed she came back, I wouldn't think twenty-two years would be enough time away.

The comic series is much much better. …

Rene Russo Added to the Cast of ‘Thor’

17 December 2009 5:29 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Rene Russo has joined the cast of Marvel’s Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh.  The comic book movie starts shooting this January for release May 20, 2011.

She is set to play Frigga, the wife of Odin (Anthony Hopkins), the Queen of Asgard, and the mommy of the titular character (Chris Hemsworth).  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this is one hell of a cast.  Even the supporting roles have named actors and actresses filling them.

Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Jamie Alexander (Sif), Kat Dennings (Marcy), Ray Stevenson (Volstagg), Stuart Townsend (Fandral), Tadanobu Asano (Hogun), Colm Feore, and Stellan Skarsgard.

I can’t imagine Frigga will be snatching too much screen time, but just knowing Russo is playing her is comforting.  Like a warm hug from… Rene Russo.

Peter Sarsgaard: The Hollywood Interview

(Peter Sarsgaard in An Education, above.)

by Terry Keefe

(Currently appearing in this month's Venice Magazine.)

Like a seal of approval, it’s always a good sign of a film’s merit to see Peter Sarsgaard in the opening credits, because he chooses his projects well, whether it has been in a leading or supporting role. For a few years now, he has been in a strong enough career position that he could opt only to play leads, even if those were in smaller films, but from his film choices, he has also clearly been more interested in the quality of role, and not necessarily the size of the part, or the paycheck. As Mark, the uniquely resourceful slacker best friend of Zach Braff in Garden State, and as Clyde Martin, the protégé in Kinsey, and in his portrayal of real-life New Republic editor Charles Lane in Shattered Glass, and …

Rene Russo Joins Thor Cast

17 December 2009 2:29 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Actress Rene Russo has joined the cast of Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Thor. Russo will apparently be playing the character of Frigga, wife of Odin, the king of Asgard.

Variety reports that Russo’s role is that of ‘the mother of Thor and Loki, the pic’s primary villain…’ However, if you are a Marvel Comics aficionado and a long time student of Thor, you already know that there is a problem with that description.

If you aren’t a Thor geek, then let me break it down for you: In the comic book continuity, Frigga is indeed Odin’s wife and queen of Asgard. However, in the comic continuity she is Thor’s step mother, and a foster mother to Loki.

Now obviously the whole step mother/foster mother thing is kind of confusing, making the relationship between Thor, Loki and Odin – one of the cornerstones of Thor

Rene Russo Resurfaces on Thor as a Godly Mom

17 December 2009 8:08 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Remember Rene Russo? My introduction to her was as an ass-kicking Detective on “Lethal Weapon 3″ with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Hard to believe, but that was nearly 17 years ago. She ended up staying on the franchise, and also came back for part four, and should there ever be a part five, she’s probably back, too. Until then, she’ll be playing Thor’s mum in Kenneth Branagh’s big-budget “Thor” movie. Russo, who is anything but frigga-ish, will be playing Frigga, the queen of Asgard and wife to Thor’s pop, Odin (to be played by Anthony Hopkins). Yes, Rene Russo is now consigned to mom roles in Hollywood. Can you believe it? The movie will star Chris Hemsworth as Thor, the Asgardian Thunder God who is banished to Earth for being a tool. Down in ye ole Earth, Thor falls in love with mortal chick Jane Foster, …

I think Russo is a good actress and the cast is definitely taking shape, I’m just hoping they will all blend well together to make an awesome movie.

Rene Russo Rounds Out ‘Thor’ Cast

17 December 2009 7:25 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

I’m taken aback by the casting direction that Kenneth Branagh has taken with his film version of Marvel Comics’ Thor — it might just be my unfamiliarity with the subject material, but really? The 40-Year-Old Virgin’s Kat Dennings in a tale of Asgard’s invasion of Earth?

That’s not to say I’m disappointed or unexcited. In fact, Branagh has fleshed out an incredibly interesting cast featuring Star Trek’s Chris Hemsworth as Thor, alongside Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard and Ray Stevenson.

The latest addition to the cast of Thor is Rene Russo, who will be playing Frigga, the mother of Thor. Russo has been sort of non-existent for the past few years, so it’s good to see her stepping behind one of Marvel’s upcoming centerpiece films.

Rene Russo Joins Thor

17 December 2009 4:09 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

By Zeus’ beard, it seems Rene Russo – one of Hollywood’s leading ladies of the 1990s – has joined the cast of Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. Even more interesting is her character name: Frigga. She will be playing Thor’s stepmother and wife to Odin (Anthony Hopkins).

This particular Marvel venture begins shooting next month for a release in May 2011. Nobody ever expected Shakespeare-obsessed Branagh to be making a comic book adaptation. Is this part of the charm? His occasional forays into Hollywood in the past have been either disasterous or middle-brow. Perhaps the studio trust him with the grand theatrics.

Thor sees himself kicked out of Asgard after re-starting an ancient feud and goes to Earth in order to stop his nefarious and scheming brother Loki from taking over our planet. Branagh is an amazing visualist (just see Hamlet) so expect his Hollywood blockbuster to look stunning. Add a Patrick Doyle score, …

David O. Russell Directing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?

17 December 2009 12:32 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's zombie literature/ mash-up novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is on track, with Natalie Portman cast as lovelorn zombie slayer Elizabeth Bennet. Portman, who's also serving as the project's producer, may have found a director.

Pajiba reports that David O. Russell is negotiating to direct and adapt the screenplay. Russell, whose next movie is the drama The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, is an unusual choice for the movie, considering his infamous on-set rampages (which top Bale's) and his lack of experience working on horror or period movies. Russell's hiring, so far, remains unconfirmed.
