The Clueless and Sin City actor has died of a heart attack aged 32. We look back at her key roles on film

Brittany Murphy was not one of the world's great actors. Nor, in recent years, was she even especially visible. But she was a performer of immense charm, with a knockout smile and a chuckling, bee-bop voice it was difficult not to be won over by.

For a spell in the early 90s, Murphy established herself as one of Hollywood's freshest, most engaging mainstream leads – a doll-eyed ditz with a hint of vaguely filthy goofiness. She was Scarlett Johansson a half-generation older: she shared that actor's old-school Hollywood glamour, the big curves on a little frame, and the brains behind the fluff. Both even had singing careers. But while Johansson teamed up with some solid mentors, and got films of real credibility under her belt, Murphy struggled to cement a career that, »

She reportedly collapsed at the home shared with her spouse Simon Monjack. After firefighters were unable to revive her, Murphy was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at approximately 10:04am

An autopsy has yet to be performed, but Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter told the Associated Press that Murphy died of natural causes. Experts are looking into her medical history and toxicology reports.

The actress, who was of Irish, Eastern European and Italian-American descent, got her start on television, but her career took off with 1999’s Girl, Interrupted, which Murphy starred in alongside Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. Today, MakingOf premieres it's third interview with writer-director Darren Aronofsky. The focus is on the collaborative nature of filmmaking, which in his opinion is all about "bringing different experts together to express themselves as a group." He further explains that his first three films ("Pi," "Requiem for a Dream," and "The Fountain") were shot using an identical crew but for "The Wrestler" he chose to shake things up and worked with an almost entirely different group. The key to success, he shares, is "surrounding yourself with people you respect and admire."

Aronofsky is currently working with his latest crew on the production of his fifth film "The Black Swan." The supernatural thriller is set in the world of New York ballet and the cast includes Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Winona Ryder and Vincent Cassel

Mila Kunis Gets Bruises for Playing Ballerina in 'Black Swan'

16 December 2009 12:35 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Billed to portray a ballerina in "Black Swan", Mila Kunis seems to have been practicing very hard for the role. According to IMDb, the actress has been left battered with bumps, bruises, cuts, and a separated shoulder because of her clumsy nature. She is now reportedly covered with bandages as she walks limply around the set and wishing she was more careful.

Explaining about her injuries, Kunis stated, "I'm broken. I've pulled so many ligaments, I have tendinitis in my left knee... I had to get an Mri because I popped my shoulder out, and then it inflamed. My toes and hips are bruised." However, her three-month preparation for the film has given her a reward of great shape. "I'm in the sickest shape I've been in my life by far. I'm also on a really strict diet. I'm dieting, then working out three or four hours a day," the 26-year-old beauty said. »

Cameron Diaz is a 'Bad Teacher'

10 December 2009 6:03 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When we first learned that The Office scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky had sold a spec called Bad Teacher, there was -- of course -- chatter about who that teacher should be. Anna Faris, Tina Fey, Elizabeth Banks, Winona Ryder, and Angelina Jolie were names batted around, but they're nothing like the reality.

I'm sorry to report that according to Variety, Cameron Diaz will be the lucky lady Bad Teacher for Columbia Pictures. The film focuses on a foulmouthed gold digger middle-school teacher. When she's dumped by her sugar daddy boyfriend, she turns her romantic attentions to her colleague, but has to battle the school's model teacher -- her rival -- for the honor. (Variety now says she battles a colleague for the affections of the model teacher, but that might be a mix-up.)

Jake Kasdan is helming the comedy, which isn't too bad, but it's not hard to »

We know what you're thinking -- "Is it possible to do a news story about a movie called Black Swan without making it sound perverse?" No. It's not possible. We can't help ourselves. It just sounds so dirty. In any event another rising (there we go again) starlet has joined the cast of Darren Aronofsky's latest film and we've got the skinny for you!

According to MovieHole, the lovely Kristina Anapau has joined the already announced Natalie Portman, Sebastian Stan, Vincent Cassel, Winona Ryder, Mila Kunis, and Barbara Hershey to play a Russian dancer named Galina, a soloist in the ballet company who’s fiercely competing with Portman’s character, Nina, for the lead role in Swan Lake.

The film centers on a veteran ballerina (Portman) who finds herself locked in a competitive situation with a rival dancer, with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance. »

Will the Fda End Our Dysfunctional Relationship With OxyContin?

8 December 2009 2:30 PM, PST | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

Dear OxyContin,

Has it really been 15 years? It seems like you arrived on the prescription pain-killer scene just yesterday. But now that we think about it, we realize there have been at least a decade's worth of embarrassing celebrity scandals involving you and your friend oxycodone. Rush Limbaugh was probably your most famous foil, but we can't forget Jack Osbourne ('03), Winona Ryder ('02), or Oj Simpson ('06), to name a few.

Now the Fda is planning to make it even more difficult for doctors to prescribe you to their patients. They say you're just too darn addictive, not to mention dangerous. According to a Canadian study published yesterday, you've increased the number of opioid-related deaths five-fold in the last 10 years or so. And, according to the study's authors, most of those overdoses were unintentional. Apparently, you're not good for our livers either.

Sure, you're not as dangerous as morphine »
