Actors make up a large chunk of the TV Academy membership — much more so than the 80-odd members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — which means seeing what they’re rewarding in December can often predict what might be a player when Emmy season begins next spring.
With so many shows launching in April to take advantage of Emmy voting, series that premiere in the fall need Globes and SAG Awards love to keep buzz alive through the winter and into the spring. Shows like “The Deuce,” “Glow,” “Ozark,” “Mindhunter,” “Godless,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and “Smilf” are aiming for a little extra attention right now.

Of course, everyone is going to have their favorites, and with several critics groups already announcing their lists/awards, there is always something that has to be left out, but a lot of people have to be surprised by some of the nominations, especially since Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World recently had to change stars, and kicked out indie darling Greta Gerwig from a spot in the Director noms.
Take a look at the full list and let us know what you think.
Best Motion Picture – Drama
In “The Shape of Water,” Sallie Hawkins plays a mute cleaning woman in 1962 Baltimore who has an supernatural encounter. In “The Post,” Meryl Streep plays a woman in her mid-50s who is thrust by circumstance into a leadership role. Margot Robbie and Allison Janney deliver tour de force performances in “I, Tonya,” a movie that on paper sounds like B-grade cable material. And the great Laurie Metcalf is the hero of “Lady Bird” and its touching look at mother-daughter and familial dynamics, for which Saorise Ronan received a best actress, comedy nom.
None of these are projects tailored to the conventional notions of the audiences who drive movie-going or indie film success. The shutout of female directors from the Globes race is particularly striking this year
“Lady Bird” is officially the best-reviewed film ever on Rotten Tomatoes. The coming-of-age dramedy has been scoring award after award, giving many hope that writer-director Greta Gerwig would be a shoo-in come Golden Globe and Oscar time. Well, Golden Globe nominations are in, and Gerwig scored a nod for Best Screenplay and “Lady Bird” is up for Best Picture — Comedy or Musical, but once again the Best Director category is composed entirely of men. No Gerwig. No Dee Rees for “Mudbound.” No Patty Jenkins for “Wonder Woman.”
Fortunately, female filmmakers fared better in the Best Animated Film category, which is noteworthy because women are especially underrepresented in that field. Two of five films in the running are women-directed or co-directed: Nora Twomey’s “The Breadwinner,” the story of a girl who cuts her hair and disguises herself as a boy so she

On the TV front, HBO’s Big Little Lies secured six nominations, with Feud: Bette and Joan on four and Fargo, The Handmaid’s Tale and This Is Us on three.
