Warner Bros. is remaking "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" (Boksuneun naui geot), and unless Martin Scorsese or someone equally capable will direct it, I think it's a bad idea. To be honest with you, I think pretty much every remake is a bad iead.
Anyway, Variety reports the studio has acquired the remake rights to the acclaimed flick directed by Chan-wook Park, and Brian Tucker ("Broken City") is in charge of writing the script. Lorenzo di Bonaventura will co-produce the project.
Park also directed the fascinating "Old Boy," which is also in the process of being remade, although the project has already come to a halt once before. Park's most recent film is "Thirst." »

Opening tomorrow is The Spierig Brothers new film Daybreakers. The film stars Ethan Hawke as a brilliant vampire hematologist (blood expert) and he lives in a world where most humans have been turned into vampires due to a plague. Unfortunately, with a vampire society so large, they’ve killed most of the remaining human population and they’re relying on Hawke to provide a blood substitute. The film also stars Sam Neill, Isabel Lucas, and Willem Dafoe.
While vampire movies and TV shows are everywhere, Daybreakers has a great concept and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the film. It’s definitely no Twilight.
So to help promote the film, I recently participated in a roundtable interview with Ethan Hawke. He talked about why he got involved in the project, making the film, and a whole lot more. It’s a great interview worth checking out.

If you appreciate period pieces and are a sucker for romance this is the film for you. Starring Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend, Paul Bettany, Miranda Richardson, and Jim Broadbent, The Young Victoria (2009) separates itself from the typical period pieces by offering you insight into the life of the longest ruler of Britain, Queen Alexandrina Victoria (Blunt). Showing you how she had to survive in a world that was threatened by even her own mother who had ulterior motives in her upbringing. The tagline says it all: "Love rules all." The Young Victoria is based on a true story. Emily Blunt is a treat to the eyes, elegant and poised at all times. The film follows Victoria from a young age to her coronation as Queen and her life as a young ruler. The Duchess of Kent (Richardson) and the King Leopold of Belgium (Thomas Kretschmann) want a Regency Order but for different reasons. »

When John Hurt played the title character in David Lynch’s The Elephant Man in 1980, it took a gifted makeup artist seven hours each day to sculpt Hurt’s bulbous forehead and twisted mouth. The actor was utterly unrecognizable under the heavy, Quasimodo-like prosthetics, but he managed to communicate sadness, grace and humanity in the role, and garner an Oscar nomination for his performance. Thirty years later, computer-generated special effects are replacing the dying art of prosthetics, but an actor has yet to earn a nod from the Academy for a purely virtual performance. One who could break the digital barrier this year is Zoe Saldana, for her work as Avatar’s alien heroine, Neytiri. To win a nomination for best actress, Saldana would have to overcome Hollywood’s skepticism about the motion-capture process director James Cameron used to make Avatar, a technique that relies on animators to enhance an actor’s work. »

The horror genre is the cruelest in cinema. Though a not-terribly funny comedy may be genial enough to give it a pass, it’s fair to say scares are cut and dried. And, for all the genre entries, most movies aren’t that scary, and many modern films can’t even deliver on the promised “Boo! Scares” of a door slammed shut or a zombie showing up in an improbable place. For the most part horror filmmakers are just as willing to rely on gore. But there’s an art to a good scare film, and the lower fidelity the better; CGI just isn’t scary. But more than anything, horror is about tone, and what Paranormal Activity does absolutely right is never let the viewer off the hook. Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat star as themselves (essentially) as a couple who records the supernatural happenings at their place. My »

We'll have to see if this actually bears fruit, but a Tweet from The Auters Daily (later reported by The Playlist) heralds Martin Scorsese's next movie as The Invention of Hugo Cabret, an adaptation of Brian Selnick's novel. If it's true - if it's true - Scorsese would bypass that long-awaited Frank Sinatra biopic and, as The Playlist points out, another mob movie with Robert De Niro.
There is reason to believe this is possible, even if we'd never expect Scorsese to work in the children's fiction genre. For starters, John Logan wrote the adaptation, and he handled The Aviator, and Graham King (The Departed) is hooked up to this as a producer. Warner Bros., which released both of those films, would distribute Hugo Cabret, as well.
Scorsese has a history, as do most successful directors, of working with players he's comfortable with, on screen and off. So there might be something to this, »

HBO is tapping Michael Mann to direct the hour-long series pilot for Luck by Deadwood creator David Milch. Mann was drawn to Luck based on the script itself, as well as feedback from Martin Scorsese and his experience directing Boardwalk Empire for HBO. It also helps that he and Milch have a long-standing friendship, going back to the days when they were working on Miami Vice and Hill Street Blues respectively. When asked about Mann directing, Milch said, “I am feeling very lucky to have Michael direct this and am champing at the bit, to borrow a few horse racing phrases.”
Find out more about Luck after the jump.
Speaking with BFDMemo, here’s what Milch had to say about Luck, “The pilot is about a bunch of intersecting lives in the world of the horse racing track.” On the surface the premise seems somewhat pedestrian, but Milch went onto »

• Reviewing the PGA nominations, Dave Karger wonders, "What if 'Avatar,' 'District 9' and 'Star Trek' all repeat and score Oscar nominations for Best Picture? Could 'Avatar,' which is widely considered to be the frontrunner at this point, actually be hurt by all the sci-fi love? It certainly seems logical that James Cameron’s opus would lose more votes to 'District' and 'Trek' than it would to, say, smaller indies like 'A Serious Man' or 'The Messenger.' In such a tight race as this year’s, something like that could make all the difference." Entertainment Weekly
• Dave's earlier Oscar predictions already have been the subject of much debate already in our forums. In particular, most posters are pleased with his prediction that Samantha Morton will land her third nod for her supporting work in "The Messenger." Gold Derby

Martin Scorsese is likely cooling his heels as he (and the rest of us) awaits the release of Shutter Island. If he has another Departed-size financial hit on his hands, the sky is probably the limit as to what he and favorite boy Leonardo DiCaprio can do next. But would Scorsese really pass over his Sinatra biopic and a half dozen other projects to go film a children's book adaptation in Europe? The European media seems to think so. Via The Playlist, apparently a French film site and major German newspaper believe that Scorsese is heading to Paris this May to film The Invention of Hugo Cabret, an adaptation of a 2007 children's book about an orphan who lives hidden in the walls of a Paris train station (you can learn all about it here). I challenge you to come up with a single way in which this would be related »

After paying a hopefully thoroughly terrifying visit to Shutter Island, director Martin Scorsese may next turn his sights to Paris and London to make The Invention of Hugo Cabret, with filming starting in May, according to several European newspapers.
So, what in the world is that about? Well, the historical fiction book by Brian Selznick is about a 12-year-old boy who lives within the walls of a Paris train station in 1931 and maintains the station’s clocks - a job which is supposed to be performed by his uncle, a hopeless drunk. A whole new adventure begins when he discovers an automaton, one of the wind-up, mechanical figures created by film-maker Georges Méliès, and works to bring it to life. Though this is a book designed for children, having read and loved it, I can confirm it’s a wildly entertaining tale for anyone with an active imagination.

And here you thought Martin Scorsese was finally going to get his Sinatra biopic off the ground. Almost three years ago there was word that Warner Bros. had optioned the childrens book The Invention of Hugo Cabret for John Logan to adapt and Scorsese to direct. Now a pair of European news reports suggest that he'll shoot the film this spring in Paris and London. How credible are they? Seems shaky at this point, but because I'd rather see the director take up something a little more outside his comfort zone than Sinatra, let's check it out. The Auteurs Daily twitter feed points to the reports, one German and one French. The gist is simple: Scorsese will shoot the film, which is without any announced cast as of yet, in Paris in May, then move to London. We don't know much more than that -- not even whether Logan's screenplay »
