A new year is approaching and that always means updates on big Hollywood projects, one such, is the Marvel live-action film, The First Avenger: Captain America.
In a story from Fangoria we are being told that Marvel Studios is aiming to start production on The First Avenger: Captain America this June according to director Joe Johnston (The Wolfman).
“Principal photography was now less than four weeks away. “By the time I got on a plane and arrived, it was three,” recalls Johnston, speaking from the art department of The First Avenger: Captain America, which he’s readying for a June start.”
Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy’s earnest plea, »

My Thoughts: When it comes to violence in the movies, there are a few rules:
Adult beating up kid = Bad.
Kid beating up kid = Ok.
Kid beating up kid with martial arts = Awesome!
The third rule was proven effective in G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which had two hooligans charged on ragev and Mountain Dew battling each other like they were competing for the kiddie remake of Enter the Dragon. (Don’t get any ideas!) It was over the top, extremely choreographed, and no punches werepulled. Those kids kicked the living crap out of each other, all for the sake of my immense amusement. Add an actual dojo to that mix, and that’s basically all I’m expecting of The Karate Kid. And with the »

Avatar box office sales this holiday weekend helped the movie finish as the No. 1 film with $75 million in U.S. tickets and an updated global total of $617.3 million. The gross box office sales for Avatar and two other films resulted in a $278 million Hollywood weekend, shattering the previous best three-day total of $261, when The Dark Knight debuted in July 2008. Delving deeper into the numbers, Avatar only lost 3 percent from its previous weekend earnings (for a total of $212.3 in North America) and it is now officially the top December grosser ever, topping Will Smith's I Am Legend. Internationally, Avatar was the No. 1 film on the foreign circuit for the second consecutive week. It has been most well-received in France, where it has generated more than $48 million in box office sales. Avatar reportedly cost as much as »

Marvel Studios’ “Captain America” movie may finally be heading in front of cameras next June.
According to an interview with director Joe Johnston at Fangoria, Johnston is “readying for a June start” for “The First Avenger: Captain America.”
Information about the “Captain America” film has been in relatively short supply since Johnston — the director of “The Rocketeer” and the upcoming remake of “The Wolfman" — was signed to direct the film last year. "Chronicles of Narnia" screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are also attached to write the script which is reportedly set in World War II.
Given that “Captain America” is scheduled to be released in July 2011 — two months after Kenneth Branagh’s “Thor” adaptation hits theaters — it’s somewhat surprising that the lead role has yet to be cast.
Back in 2008, popular speculation centered around Will Smith wielding the shield — rumors which were eventually shot down by Smith himself. »

Now that 2009 is so last year - well, almost - it's time to look forward to the next 12 months and the start of a new decade. Here we present our guide to 2010: the most promising newcomers, how the old guard are staying ahead of the game, plus the latest creative thinking in the arts, technology, politics and culture
1 Pop Ellie Goulding Ellie Goulding's success in 2010 may be preordained by industry insiders, but don't hold that against her. "I'm a country girl – I couldn't be less sceney if I tried," she laughs. Blessed with sirenlike tones and a gift for cleverly skewed pop, the 22-year-old Welsh singer-songwriter (pictured below) has already been named the winner of next year's Critics Choice Brit Award, last year bestowed on Florence + The Machine, and is putting the finishing touches to her debut album, due out in February. Will Smith has spawned an action star -- his son Jaden, the new "Karate Kid." Watch the first trailer.
The young Smith fights his way onto the big screen in 2010 as Dre Parker, the newest martial arts trainee in the latest "Karate Kid" installment.
We have to say, based on this trailer... the movie looks better than we were expecting it to look. We aren't sure how we feel about Jaden Smith being 11 years younger than Ralph Macchio was in the first movie. It's like they turned it into a kids' movie.
What do you guys think?

It’s been a great year for the British film industry. It kicked off with the British invasion of the Oscars, with notable wins for Kate Winslet, and Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. The huge amount of British Actors plying their trade successfully in Hollywood continued to grow, with Scot Gerard Butler particularly in demand with parts in Gamer, The Ugly Truth and Law Abiding Citizen.
British filmmakers have been responsible for some of the more interesting films this year. Duncan Jone’s Moon was a brilliant yet under appreciated sci-fi drama. Fish Tank and Harry Brown lead the way for low budget drama. Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus finally found a distributor. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince became the highest grossing British movie of all time.
British film festivals Raindance and the BFI London Film Festival saw record attendances, and showcased some great films from home, »

Synopsis: Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith stars in this updated version of the 1980’s film that starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. I defy you to find an 80’s child who doesn’t recognize it when someone poses for the “Crane Kick.” The move was made legendary when it was used to win the “All Valley Karate Championship” at the end of 1984’s The Karate Kid. The film was the beginning of a franchise that became an institution for tons of teens during that decade, and now they’ve gone and remade it.
The reboot stars Jackie Chan as “Mr. Han” and Jaden Smith (The Day the Earth Stood Still and Will Smith’s son), as “Dre Parker.” It’s an updated story that takes the setting from Southern California to Beijing. Mr. Han will be teaching Dre karate (or maybe it will be kung-fu – most American audiences don’t know the difference) and putting him through workouts that might strain Jean Claude van Damme.
The movie also features Taraji P. Henson »

He may get his acting chops from Oscar-nominated superstar, Will Smith, but son Jaden Smith is learning his martial arts movie chops from a kung fu master -- Jackie Chan. (Yes, leave it to Tinsel Town to love a title so much that they conveniently ignore the fact that the film features the Chinese martial art of "kung fu", not the Japanese "karate") Eleven-year-old Jaden plays the title role in the upcoming reboot of "The Karate Kid", the 1980's classic coming-of-kick-age flick starring Ralph Macchio. To prepare for his role, Jaden trained for several tough months under a Kung Fu instructor, providing »

The trailer for the Karate Kid remake starring the adorable Jaden Smith (that's Will Smith's son to you) is out: As noted, the kid is cute. The Chinese setting looks amazing (training on the Great Wall certainly beats standing on a stump on an L.A. beach, no?). And Jackie Chan is always badass. And yet...while a 10-year-old kid doing karate has a certain adorableness factor, and I support being able to defend oneself against bullies, is that enough to hold a movie? Our beloved hero in the original, Ralph Macchio's Daniel, was trying to prove more »

It could just be the fast-paced editing, but Jaden Smith looks like he's a quick study in the new Karate Kid trailer. There are other things I generally like that are featured here, Jackie Chan and Taraji P. Henson, but this one will swim or sink because of its 11-year-old star. He was great in The Pursuit of Happyness and terrible in The Day the Earth Stood Still. Then again, everything was terrible in that remake, so you can give him a pass there.
It was odd, in my opinion, for Will Smith to choose this as the star vehicle for his kid. Also, it seemed odd that Smith would force his young son into this position, but maybe they really did their due diligence on that. But because the original features a much older kid (Daniel was in his teens; Macchio was 22), the casting seemed like a reach. It »

In what has to be some sort of Hollywood record, even more trailers arrived online since we last met … and it’s starting to become a bit of a chore to keep up with all of them. While we’re expecting the latest trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception to hit at anytime, here are two more previews for a couple of buzzed-about 2010 films. The Karate Kid Nope, they’re not re-releasing the old 1984 classic starring Ralph Maccio and Pat Morita. Instead, this is the 2010 remake, complete with hip-hop tunes, Will Smith’s kid Jaden, and Jackie Chan as the lovable martial arts mentor. Like in the previous incarnation, this one follows a kid and his mom who move overseas to start a new life (the original had them moving from New Jersey to...

Once thought to be called The Kung Fu Kid, the remake of The Karate Kid has been unveiled via this first trailer and will retain the name of its inspiration.
Will Smith's son Jaden takes over the title role from Ralph Macchio as a scrawny kid who is taken under the wing of an unlikely mentor, Jackie Chan in place of Pat Morita. The film looks to mix plot elements from the first and second Karate Kid films as Jaden's character learns Karate after having traveled to China and fancied a girl a young local karate fighter already has eyes on.
The trailer is surprisingly familiar with many nods to the original films and far less "lame" than some feared the remake would be. If anything, it will be a vehicle for young Jaden Smith to kick start his acting career and follow in his father's footsteps.

A new twist on Chinese knockoffs. It's bad enough that China is kicking our collective backside in the global economy, but now some Beijing bullies are messing with Will Smith's son Jaden in this remake of The Karate Kid! Luckily, Jackie Chan (in the Pat Morita role) is there to save America, or something. Did we really need this? No. But does anybody need counterfeits of garish Louis Vuitton bags? Another big no. And yet people buy them. Who are we to judge? Let us know in the comments section if the physical comedy genius of Jackie Chan will make this worth a look in June of 2010. Or does this trailer suddenly make you miss Ralph Macchio? »
