Calley Too Ill To Receive Honorary Oscar

1 hour ago | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Movie mogul John Calley missed out on one of the biggest evenings of his life on Saturday - because he was too ill to attend the Governors Awards gala in Los Angeles.

The 79-year-old producer and former studio head was billed to receive the coveted Irving G. Thalberg Oscar, but was too sick to show up.

Steven Spielberg accepted the award from presenter Tom Hanks on his friend's behalf, while fellow moguls George Lucas, Dino De Laurentiis, Saul Zaentz and Warren Beatty paid tribute to Calley.

Honours also went to movie legend Lauren Bacall, director Roger Corman and cinematographer Gordon Willis.

Presenting Bacall with her honour at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland, Anjelica Huston stated the movie star "defines what it means to be an actress," adding, "She is a woman of great charisma and beauty but one not to be trifled with."

Bacall confessed she was "very emotional and grateful" to be honoured at the 2009 Governors Awards.

Honouring B-movie mastermind Roger Corman, Quentin Tarantino called the director "the original maverick," while Ron Howard revealed, "He changed my life."

A thrilled Corman told the audience, "I’m delighted to accept this Oscar," adding that those in Hollywood work in “the only true modern art form.”

Saturday night’s gala and awards ceremony marked the first time the academy has presented its honorary awards anywhere other than during the annual Oscar telecast. »

Waterworld Blu-ray Review

7 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Hollywood has figured something out, which is that even if you spend a shit-ton of money on a film, that in and of itself can attract an audience. It’s hard to look at the relative success of Waterworld at the box office as anything more than rubbernecking on the freeway, and it was worthwhile for many who had grown tired of Kevin Costner. My review of Waterworld after the jump.

Though somewhat stiff at times, Costner was the leading man of the late 80’s, even more so than Tom Cruise, with his sexual charisma and aw-shucks charm. No Way Out, The Untouchables, Bull Durham, and Field of Dreams said “hey world, check me out.” Then came Dances with Wolves, which won him a couple of Oscars, defeating the (now seen as obviously superior) Goodfellas. Some resentment sets in with success and the oddball A Perfect World, and the terrible »

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #17

15 hours ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

This week I'm on time and have more than just one movie to discuss as I finally finished watching both Terrence Malick and Paul Weitz's filmography, caught another Christmas film I had not seen and refreshed my memory on a Spielberg sci-fi.

As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 51 friends on the movie rental site and would love to have a few more if those of you out there with accounts are interested. Now, here's the recap of my week in movies...

A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) Quick Thoughts: For no real reason whatsoever other than the fact this film had landed on my radar over the past few months, I finally decided to watch A.I. since first watching it back in 2001. I remember not being blown away after seeing it the first time and again I wasn't bowled over, but »

Scorsese to Receive DeMille Award at Golden Globes

22 hours ago | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

You could give Martin Scorsese just about any award you want and I don't think anyone would protest. Though he emerged at a time when American film was really blossoming, you could really only argue that among his contemporaries, Steven Spielberg is on the same level. Even then, I'm not certain Spielberg has been as consistent or as daring as Scorsese has in his career. They're also shooting for different goals most of the time.

A couple years ago, Scorsese finally got his Oscar, even if it's not the best example of his work and certainly not the first time he earned the award. At the Golden Globes in January, Scorsese will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his "outstanding contribution to the entertainment field." Spielberg, incidentally, won this past year.

Interview by Nic Brown

What can you say about someone whose list of interests include horror movies, anime, video games, guns and bows, serial killers, and kung fu movies? Well if you’re talking about Nikki Kruex, you can say that you’re just scratching the surface of this actress, model, musician, paranormal investigator and artistic Jill-of-all-trades...

In fact if you visit her website, www.nikkihomicidek.ws, you’ll find a page for just about every aspect of the entertainment industry. Somehow Nikki still manages to find time for fun and when she does you may find her doing anything from shooting a crossbow to playing Grand Theft Auto. Of course with multiple film projects, a new album coming out soon and a paranormal investigation show just waiting to take off, you won’t find her relaxing much. Fortunately, Nic Brown managed to pin down this creative tornado long enough »

Gold Derby nuggets: 411 on 'Nine' | Two perspectives on 'Avatar' | Four toons top 50 Oscars snubs

• Tony-winning composer Maury Yeston talked in great detail to Harry Haun about the journey of "Nine" from screen (as "8 1/2") to stage and back to screen. "There are only two ways to approach Broadway shows becoming movies," Yeston says. "One of them is to be an over-controlling fuddy-duddy and not let anybody change anything. The other is to step back and go with the new medium." For Yeston, "The adaptation back into film was a very organic one that made a tremendous amount of sense. It was a great opportunity to allow this piece -- which had been so cinematic to begin with -- to find again its place in the grammar of cinema. That means things like dissolves, edits, close-ups, lighting effects -- things film can do for exposition to get inside the mind." Playbill

Free Flick of the Day: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

13 November 2009 2:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you were anxious for another free dose of Sergio Leone after last week's suggestion of For a Few Dollars More, you're in luck! The third and final installment of the Dollars / Man With No Name Trilogy just happens to be up on SlashControl right now. I can't think of a better gang to spend Friday the 13th with than The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is an epic, dizzying adventure set in the middle of the Civil War, and circles around three unsavory fellows and their hunt for a fortune in Confederate gold. It's probably the most famous and the most popular of Leone's westerns and Ennio Morricone's soundtracks. Every moment of this film is iconic. But the best part of the film isn't the sweeping battles, the mournful soldiers, or the explosive shoot-outs; it's the hateful alliance between Blondie »

Nick Frost on Spielberg, Paul, and Richard Curtis's Pirate Radio

13 November 2009 1:30 PM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

For someone who never quite intended to become an actor, Nick Frost sure is having a good go at it. The British comedian rose to fame on his collaborations with Simon Pegg, including Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, and they have more in store (including the alien comedy Paul and a tandem role in Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn) but in the meantime, Frost can be seen as part of the sterling ensemble in Pirate Radio, directed by Richard Curtis (Love Actually).

Movieline caught up with Frost to discuss the challenges of making the boat-set comedy, and Frost was happy to share some tidbits about his upcoming, fanboy-friendly slate at the same time. »

The Hollywood Foreign Press will bestow its honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award to Martin Scorsese during the Golden Globes on January 17, according to Variety.

Scorsese, who is a few days from his 67th birthday, is responsible for several movies legendary for their gritty, sometimes expressionistic, portrayals of violence. These include Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and GoodFellas.

He also crafted many underrated gems that explored various social and cultural issues. These include The King of Comedy (the obsessions of celebrity culture), The Last Temptation of Christ (a non-Gospel, first-person telling of Jesus's internal struggle), Kundun (the life of the Dalai Lama), and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (the trials of single-motherhood).

The DeMille Award recognizes the lifetime achievement of various actors and directors. Recent recipients include Steven Spielberg, Robin Williams, and Al Pacino. Earlier recipients include Walt Disney, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, and Alfred Hitchcock, among others. You can »

Producer Charles Roven Developing The Looking Glass Wars Movie

13 November 2009 8:43 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

It's always fun to take an established story and manipulate the so-called "happily ever after" ending. Steven Spielberg making Peter Pan grow up with Hook, or Hansel and Gretel becoming professional witch hunters are just a couple of fine examples. Now it looks like The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven is set to play in the world of Wonderland as this morning on Good Morning America (via ComingSoon) author Frank Beddor announced that he has been working with Roven to adapt his series of novels collectively known as The Looking Glass Wars, which have a much different take on the classic Alice in Wonderland story. In this rather interesting take on that story, it claims that Leiws Caroll's two preceding books (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass) were nothing but lies and that this is the true story. Beddor's version features twists on the original story, such »

Liam Neeson's 'Clash of the Titans' movie trailer is a zinger (IrishCentral)

Video / Watch Clash of the Titans / Click here If “Clash of the Titans” is half as good as the trailer then fans can expect a rollercoaster ride when the movie, which stars our own Liam Neeson, comes out next year. The high octane trailer features amazing action scenes, super CGI-aided setups and the promise of a blood bath's worth of action that will have fans frothing ahead of the movie’s release in 2010. Neeson plays Zeus in the movie, and the big man from Ballymena sports a suit of gold armor, and dark brown, Zeus-like long hair and full beard. Sam Worthington, the Aussie who made a huge breakthrough in the last Terminator movie, takes on the role of ‘Perseus.’ Also starring in the movie, based on the Greek myth of Perseus and his epic battles with Medusa and the Kraken monster in order to save a Princess Andromeda, are »

Scorsese To Receive Another Award

13 November 2009 12:20 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Martin Scorsese may have taken a while to start winning awards - he didn't actually land an Oscar till 2007 or a Golden Globe for Directing until 2003 - but he's making up for it now. At next year's Globes ceremony, he'll receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for "outstanding contribution to the entertainment field".We're guessing that the delayed release of Scorsese's next film, Shutter Island, allowed this award to take place; that DiCaprio starring thriller was moved back out of awards season and meant that Scorsese won't be up for a competitive award this year.He joins previous winners that include Steven Spielberg (2009), Warren Beatty (2007 - they skipped 2008 because of the Writers' Strike), Anthony Hopkins (2006) and Robin Williams (2005). While most winners have been actors, previous directors to win include Alfred Hitchcock (1972) and Walt Disney (1953). The Award will be handed out at the Globes on January 17, hosted this year by Ricky Gervais. »

Martin Scorsese to Receive Golden Globes' Cecil B. DeMille Award

12 November 2009 10:09 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

For my money, Martin Scorsese is one of the most influential filmmakers working in Hollywood today, and his films are nothing short of inspirational, provocative labors of love and life. It seems the Hollywood Foreign Press Association also agrees as Variety reports that he will be this year's recipient of  the Cecil B. DeMille Award recognizing a person's outstanding contribution to the entertainment field, which just last year was given to Scorsese's longtime friend, fellow filmmaker Steven Spielberg. Scorsese will be honored by several of his peers and collaborators when the show (hosted by Ricky Gervais) airs live January 17th. Scorsese has received two Golden Globe Awards for his work as director on The Departed and Gangs of New York as well as nominations in directing for Casino, Age of Innocence, Goodfellas and Raging Bull. As overly-long and boring as the awards shows usually are, I love these lifetime achievement »
