Anything by Lucy Mangan, because of the hooting hilarity that invariably ensues (Wookey Hole wants to hire a witch. Well, I can cackle ... G2 shortcuts, 9 July) – Sadie Clifford, Stockport
The greatest named place in Britain is inviting applicants for possibly the country's greatest job – to become the modern-day counterpart to the legendary witch of Wookey Hole.
The Somerset caves have long been home to a witch turned to stone in the middle ages by a Benedictine monk with a flair for that kind of thing called Father Bernard. Now, however, the popular tourist attraction is in need of someone with a wider skill set than that possessed by the average vaguely person-shaped rocky outcropping, and is advertising for a living witch to take up residence in the caves at weekends, »

It’s been a great year for the British film industry. It kicked off with the British invasion of the Oscars, with notable wins for Kate Winslet, and Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. The huge amount of British Actors plying their trade successfully in Hollywood continued to grow, with Scot Gerard Butler particularly in demand with parts in Gamer, The Ugly Truth and Law Abiding Citizen.
British filmmakers have been responsible for some of the more interesting films this year. Duncan Jone’s Moon was a brilliant yet under appreciated sci-fi drama. Fish Tank and Harry Brown lead the way for low budget drama. Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus finally found a distributor. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince became the highest grossing British movie of all time.
British film festivals Raindance and the BFI London Film Festival saw record attendances, and showcased some great films from home, »

Five years after his now legendary performance as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, Dolph Lundgren was enjoying considerable success having starred in a trio of films that include Red Scorpion, (the original) The Punisher and as popular toy figure He-Man in Masters of the Universe. The films ranged from okay to just plain awful, but Lundgren had an onscreen presence that was more than just his six foot five frame. The guy had personality and for a native of Stockholm, Sweden, he could easily adopt an American accent. The nineties saw Lundgren in a string of action films that included Showdown in Little Tokyo with the late Brandon Lee, Universal Soldier with Jean-Claude Van Damme and the Keanu Reeves vehicle Johnny Mnemonic which to this day remains Ludgren's last film that had an American theatrical release. By the close of the decade Lundgren's films were only released straight to video sin the U. »

Remember this image that was released a while back of Sylvester Stallone standing over those dead bodies wielding a couple of pistols from his new movie, The Expendables? Well, AICN have stumbled across some new raw footage that I think leads up to that photo.
AICN point it the fact that you have to remember this clip has had no other effects added to it, it is simply one shot from a crane camera and therefore don’t be surprised when it looks a bit naff!
The Expendables is a clash of the 80s & 90s hard men and has a cast which, as well as Stallone includes Anold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li and flying the flag for the girls, Charisma Carpenter and now (I still can’t believe it), the late Brittany Murphy. It’s out summer 2010 and we are looking forward to »

It had been a successful decade for the comic book movie, with that trend continuing into the latter half of the decade. Just as looked like the public demand for irradiated heroes looked to be diminishing, with lacklustre showings from the likes of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four, out came Iron Man. Coupled with a brilliant script and an excellent performance from Robert Downey Jr as the titular zillionaire industrialist/playboy/freedom fighter/all-round genius, the end result was something truly special. Downey’s career was also revitalised, earning him a role in Tropic Thunder (which would earn him an Oscar nomination). Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk took a similar approach, this time giving Edward Norton of Fight Club fame a shot at getting under the skin of the green goliath. They set a tough act to follow, but followed they were by one Christopher Nolan. With the Batman »

The Clueless and Sin City actor has died of a heart attack aged 32. We look back at her key roles on film
Brittany Murphy was not one of the world's great actors. Nor, in recent years, was she even especially visible. But she was a performer of immense charm, with a knockout smile and a chuckling, bee-bop voice it was difficult not to be won over by.
For a spell in the early 90s, Murphy established herself as one of Hollywood's freshest, most engaging mainstream leads – a doll-eyed ditz with a hint of vaguely filthy goofiness. She was Scarlett Johansson a half-generation older: she shared that actor's old-school Hollywood glamour, the big curves on a little frame, and the brains behind the fluff. Both even had singing careers. But while Johansson teamed up with some solid mentors, and got films of real credibility under her belt, Murphy struggled to cement a career that, »

What a strange bit of untimely news this morning. Who dies of a heart attack at age 32? Makes no sense. The above news headline isn't a case of bad taste -- I've decided to re-publish a Brittany Murphy interview we had on the site, which I had completely forgot that we had, but it serves as a reminder that the actress, known for bubbly roles as Jameson mentions in his intro below, and as of late, had some back to back films that went the direct to video route, should also be remembered for taking on some difficult, challenging indie parts as in Karen Moncrieff's film. - What a strange bit of untimely news this morning. James Cameron enjoyed a weekend to remember - the director's sci-fi epic Avatar shot to the top of the U.S. box office just days after he received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.
On Friday, the Titanic auteur was honoured by fans and industry pals as he revealed his own star - the 2,396th - before his Aliens muse Sigourney Weaver paid tribute to the legendary filmmaker.
Cameron told reporters he was especially pleased with his spot outside the Egyptian Theatre, as his star was next to Sylvester Stallone's - who he teamed up with to write the screenplay for 1985's Rambo: First Blood Part II.
He said, "The placement is especially cool - right in front of the prestigious Egyptian Theatre, right next to Sylvester Stallone, my co-writer on Rambo: First Blood Part II.
"We're together again - apparently for all eternity now."
He paid tribute to his Avatar "family" - thanking his cast and crew for working so tirelessly on the project: "Whatever Avatar becomes, however well it does, whatever accolades it receives, the face of Avatar is these people right here. Most actors work on a film for months at the most. Some of our team worked on the film for almost a year and a half. We actually became a kind of family and we all still love each other."
The ceremony came on the same day his computer-generated saga hit cinemas across the globe - raking in $73 million (£45.6 million) in America alone on its first weekend of release. »

From the quotable "Clueless" to the hard-bitten "8 Mile," Brittany Murphy has left behind a legacy of remarkable onscreen roles. But before her sudden death on Sunday, the 32-year-old actress also completed work on several films and was getting set to begin another in January. Not much is known about these low-profile projects, so MTV News got in touch with various producers and reps connected to the films to figure out their status and when audiences might have the chance to see the actress at work in the future.
Before her passing, Murphy completed work on this psychological thriller in which she plays a woman with a history of psychiatric issues who accompanies her boyfriend (Dean Cain) to the hospital for surgery, only to have him disappear without a trace. »
