Penguins, Nicole Kidman and Narnia – Paul Howlett picks his film highlights
Christmas Eve
(Tim Johnson, Karey Kirkpatrick, 2006) 4.25pm, BBC1
A DreamWorks animated adventure in which Rj, the cynical racoon (laconically voiced by Bruce Willis) teaches a burrowful of innocent woodland animals to forage off the waste of an encroaching housing estate rather than rely on boring old natural food, before inevitably seeing the error of his ways. Plenty of good slapstick fun for kids and cine-literate gags for adults, although it all seems a bit glib compared to Shrek and co.
(Tim Burton, Mike Johnson, 2005) 6pm, ITV1
Life, in Burton's typically weird and ghoulish fantasy, is a dull, grey affair: death is much more colourful and fun, as young Victor (voiced by Johnny Depp) discovers when he is whisked into the underworld by the maggoty Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter). Trouble is, he's in love »

Zoe Saldana starred in two major hits this year — Star Trek and Avatar — both of which were sci-fi movies. There's a good reason for it. Saldana told People that she's drawn to "geek" material.
For me, it's been like preaching to my choir, because I was considered what you would think of as a geek. I loved stories that helped me escape, and those happened to be the stories that fall into the category of geekiness. So, therefore, I am a proud geek!
With her geekdom in check, Saldana admitted to Parade that she would be happy to have a career filled with sci-fi movies.
I wouldn't mind doing a few more. Look what it did for Sigourney Weaver's career. That's a really great path to follow and she's a really good role model to have. I do wish there were more genres in which women could be presented »

Sigourney Weaver claims 'Avatar' was the easiest movie she has worked on. The actress found working in a performance capture suit ''freeing'' because she didn't have to worry about her appearance and director James Cameron explained their virtual world so well. She said: ''It was so easy and organic because there's no green screen, there's no makeup or costumes or anything. You're just sort of free in your little black suit to interact with the other actors. ''And Jim has a virtual camera that he can show you your avatar and the world that you're actually walking through. He can do a .. »

As Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver win plaudits for their roles as older women in physical relationships with younger men, one of the most enduring barriers in Hollywood's movie-making history is at last being torn down
When a film star seduces someone 20 or 30 years their junior on screen, the audience doesn't bat an eyelid. In fact, it is an established cinema convention. If the older star is a woman, however, public reaction is harder to predict. But now Hollywood, so long accused of sexism because of the way it treats female talent, finally seems prepared to tackle a subject once regarded as beyond the pale: sex and the sixtysomething woman.
Sigourney Weaver, who stars in this month's new sci-fi blockbuster, Avatar, has revealed that in her next film she is to play the lover of an actor little more than half her age. In Cedar Rapids, Weaver, 60, is cast opposite »
