The Foywonder's Ten Worst Horror Films of the Decade

23 December 2009 8:31 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The first decade of the new millennium has come to an end, and that means it is now time for film sites all over the web to begin posting their various retrospectives and lists recalling the decade that was. I generally as a rule dislike such lists because they are always so subjective. Then I said screw it and took it upon myself to do one of my own naming the ten worst horror movies of the past decade. Besides, people love bitching on the Internet about lists like this, and who am I to deny readers yet another excuse to get into pointless flame wars over personal opinions.

Of course, this list is just my personal opinion which is not legally binding ... unless Proposition 304 passes. And we all pray that it will.

I set two rules when putting this list together: Only horror movies that received fairly wide theatrical »

Updates from Robert Rodriguez's Parking Lot

20 December 2009 7:31 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Last week I spent a day at Robert Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios loitering around the parking lot, interviewing some actors on that lot, and raiding the catering van for cookies. You can probably guess it was a set visit for Predators, but I'm bound and gagged like The Gimp from spilling anything about that for the time being. However, I can blather all I want about tidbits from everything not involving "Predators versus No-Longer-Larry Fishburne" (yep, Fishburne is in the film as a character named Noland... I can say that. I know. What an incredibly -- not very interesting -- piece of "news").

First, both Rodriguez and Troublemaker Studios co-owner Elizabeth Avellan confirmed Spy Kids 4 is a go. However, they're jettisoning the original actors and rebooting the franchise because those kids are total geezers by now. So, expect the 12-year-old fanboys of the world to start foaming and ranting »

Interview with Stingray Sam writer/director/star Cory McAbee

17 December 2009 4:15 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

When Cory McAbee’s American Astronaut debuted at Sundance in 2001 critics where all tripping over themselves to attribute superlatives to the genre-bending film whilst struggling to describe exactly what they had just seen. Having made numerous appearances at Sundance for the better part of two decades, McAbee returned earlier this year with Stingray Sam. The David Hyde Pierce narrated sixty minute feature once again baffled but delighted critics. Both features are now available exclusively at Cory McAbee’s web-site and you can also follow him on Twitter. Mr. McAbee generously donated his time to discuss his work.

You’ve made a name for yourself as one of the most original voices on the independent film scene with projects such as American Astronaut and Stingray Sam, both available at your website, across scores of festivals. Both projects are unique in that they blend genres that aren’t seen as natural fits to create whole new paradigms. »

Live Rifftrax: Back for the Holidays - talking with Michael J. Nelson

17 December 2009 3:40 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

America’s favorite movie hecklers are back for their second live event.  This August the Rifftrax crew of Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett (formally of Mystery Science Theatre 3000) performed a hilarious send up of the Ed Wood Classic Plan 9 From Outer Space to a live audience from the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville Tennessee and hundreds of theatres across the country.  Now they’re back, bringing that same hilarity to a series of Christmas shorts, just in time for the holidays.  I recently had the chance to speak with Michael from Rifftrax about the group’s second live show.

Where will you be riffing from this time?

We are from Escindido which is close to us here in San Diego it’s a center for the performing arts.

Why short films instead of one full length film?

People really love the shorts.  We put them out »

'Until The Light Takes Us': Dead Boys, By Kurt Loder

Black metal, the movie.

Before The Light Takes Us

Photo: Variance Films

My favorite Norwegian black-metal story, well-known by now to connoisseurs of the demented, is the one about the singer called — prophetically, as it turned out — Dead. Per Yngve Ohlin was his real-world name, and he fronted the influential black-metal band Mayhem. One day in the spring of 1991, at a house the group shared not far from Oslo, Dead blew his brains out with a shotgun. ("Excuse all the blood," his suicide note said.) His body was discovered by the band's guitarist, Euronymous, who of course realized the police would have to be called. Before doing so, though, Euronymous scurried out to buy a cheap camera, returned to the house, arranged the death scene a little more photogenically — the shotgun carefully positioned next to the corpse, with its frontal lobe still slopping out of the cranium — and snapped some pictures. »

Anthony Hopkins As Odin (Not Brian Blessed) And Grant Morrison's Mystery Project In Today's Twitter Report

30 October 2009 11:31 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Much of the comic book Twitterverse had opinions on Anthony Hopkins newly announced casting as Odin in Marvel's upcoming "Thor" movie. A few more, including Jeff Parker and Andy Diggle seemed to be partial to him over Brian Blessed, who had previously been mentioned for the role.

Elsewhere in the Twitter Report feed, I don't usually include non-comics-related talent, but director Paul McGuigan mentioned that he and Grant Morrison are working on new project together in Scotland. No word on whether this is something for comics, film or both—but the Twitter Report will be watching. Check that out after the jump, along with a great Judge Dredd mask, how one DC editor is dressing for Halloween and which zombie film Ed Brubaker has been watching.

It's all in the Twitter Report for October 30, 2009.

@paul_mcguigan Writer Grant Morrison and I are working on a very interesting project based in Scotland. »

Mvff '09: Dark and Stormy Night, The Missing Person, The Red Machine

27 October 2009 9:04 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

I hesitate to refer to these movies as leftovers because they're actually some of the highlights of the festival for me, but through my own fault, they just fell on the wayside as I was covering the Mill Valley Film Festival. So now I'm posting my late reviews of Larry Blamire's B-movie spoof Dark and Stormy Night, Noah Buschel's noir deconstruction The Missing Person, and Stephanie Argy and Alec Boehm's period heist flick The Red Machine.

Coincidentally, all three films happen to sport a very retro feel and make use of outdated lingo effectively.

• • •

Dark and Stormy Night

Larry Blamire continues with this film his spoofing of classic B-movies following the semi-popular Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (and its lesser known sequel), culled from the tradition of the Dark House pictures. The plot is of the familiar Agatha Christie variety: suspicious characters trapped in a closed-off space, dying »

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 1

27 October 2009 5:54 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Given man's unwavering fascination with woman, it's no surprise that the female star acts as the anchor to a dominant portion of horror pictures. I mean really, who wants to see a bare chested man tearin ass through the woods screaming at the top of his lungs while a bladed assailant nips at his heels? I don't - I know that much, although I'm certain there are plenty of men who would disagree (and that's okay with me, to each his own!). The simple fact remains however, women bring a unique appeal and certain sensual atmosphere to film that no man ever could. And it's not all about gratuitous T&A.

There's a comforting quality in the hands of the heroine; a fascinating maternal strength that, as a man I cannot genuinely relate to. I can however admire, and in many cases it's nearly impossible to not admire the lone »

Poster Premiere: Ed Wood Meets 007 in 'Modus Operandi'?

26 October 2009 3:40 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I'll give you a few details and some material from the press release right here ... but I've made an executive decision to place the brand-new poster for Frankie Latina's Modus Operandi beneath the jump -- but only because it's slightly "adult" in nature. Anyway, this flick sounds like a weird one, and of course I mean that in the nicest way possible.

Described by the Las Vegas Weekly as "a James Bond film directed by Ed Wood," the 8mm Modus Operandi is about ... heck, I'll let the press notes tell you: "Two briefcases with mysterious contents are stolen from top Presidential candidate Squire Parks, setting off a deadly series of double-crosses and betrayals. Desperate warring factions of subterranean organizations will stop at nothing to gain possession of the sensitive material. A covert branch of the CIA calls on notorious black ops agent Stanley Cashay, who has been barely existing »

Review: Cockhammer (Nsfw)

25 October 2009 7:42 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Kevin Strange and the Hack Movies family have returned with their newest cinematic endeavor into low-budget, uncensored debauchery… and our review begins with this warning:

This film contains scenes depicting violence, gore, nudity, profane language, and a generally distasteful, albeit good-natured, sentiment.  If this sounds like the type of film you’d rather not get into…

Stop Watching Now!

Ladies and gentlemen, take fucking heed!  Kevin Strange is Not jerking around this time. Strange has pulled out all the stops. Cockhammer, the fifth feature film from Hack Movies, marks the dawn of a whole new era from one of the most daring, productive and controversial underground filmmaking troupes in the Midwest.

Chances are, if you’re a fan of Hack Movies, or this genre of film in general, you’ve already heard of Kevin Strange and his Cockhammer. With that said, we want to whole-heartily apologize for getting this review »

Hey, Paulington: Halloween Blu-Rays, Horror Theme Parks, and the Worst Movie Ever Made!

Hey, Paulington! Is a Cinephile advice column that looks at life, love, and the movies. Anyone can send in a question, and Paulington will answer it. Sure, it's a really cryptic, cliched concept that has been around since the dawn of time. But we're spicing it up a little bit. Topics can range from anything: Sex, violence, haints and taints, your favorite movie! Paulington doesn't care. He's basically doing it for a paycheck. He's not really an expert on anything. But he sure does know a lot about movies and human nature. You can send your questions to (as in, click on the giant red letters and you will automatically be sent to his email):

Hey, Paulington!

And he will be sure to answer all of them in a very timely manner. Here are this week's letters. Enjoy!

Bela Lugosi And Boris Karloff: The Expanded Story Of A Haunting Collaboration (Book Review)

20 October 2009 1:50 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Their names are synonymous with classic horror films.  Together, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff presented an unbeatable tag team of terror.  For over 25 years they dueled for horror superiority with films such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, White Zombie, The Bride Of Frankenstein, Mark Of The Vampire, and dozens of others.  Film historian Greg Mank, the foremost expert on classic horror of the 1930s and 1940s, takes horror fans on an incredible journey through the lives of these two icons of the silver screen in Bela Lugosi And Boris Karloff: The Expanded Story Of A Haunting Collaboration.

In a volume nearly 700 pages long, Mank looks at their films both individually and together, as well as their personal and private lives and relationships.  Over the years Mank has conducted interviews with hundreds of personalities related to classic horror including many surviving stars, crewmembers, and the families of the stars.  With Mank’s work, »

trailer break: ‘Plan 9’ teaser trailer

So these guys from Darkstone Entertainment wanna remake the Ed Wood anti-classic Plan 9 from Outer Space, except as: a serious-minded retelling of the original story, paying homage to the spirit of Wood’s film without resorting to camp or parody. I thought camp and parody were the spirit of Ed Wood. God helps us in the future. Plan 9 does not yet have a release date, but it’s looking to be a DVD and/or online release, not a theatrical one. »

[DVD Review] The Hills Run Red

8 October 2009 | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

A few months back, I reviewed a direct to DVD horror release called The Last Resort. Stuck for words about the film’s confusing plot and shaky logic, I started pontificating about the differences between this generation’s direct-to-dvd horror releases and their spiritual heirs, the low-budget sci-fi films of the fifties. I commented that something sincere had been lost between now and then, and now, with The Hills Run Red, I have had that idea exemplified in a way far more eloquent than I stated then. It’s not that the movie is especially good, because it isn’t, but in its aspirations towards wit and its slavish devotion to the slasher films of yesteryear, it reveals more about the gradual shift in horror’s values than an essay or review probably ever could.

According to the opening title graphics, The Hills Run Red came out in the early 1980s, »

Review: ‘Smash Cut’

14 September 2009 4:51 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

It’s hard to criticize a film like ‘Smash Cut,’ particularly if you’re interests don’t mesh with those of the filmmaker.  For all intents and purposes, the film is critic-proof, as director Lee Demarbre pulls off exactly what he set out to make, an homage piece to Herschell Gordon Lewis.  A low budget nod to the shock and schlock of Lewis, Demarbre’s film acts as both horror and comedy, though, when all is said and done, it’s pretty much all comedy.

At the center of ‘Smash Cut’ is low-budget, horror filmmaker, Abel Whitman, played with a presence by David Hess.  He’s the kind of filmmaker who views his works as art, though most believe he “makes Ed Wood look like Orson Welles.”  It isn’t until a fateful night when Abel gets into a violent accident with a local stripper that he realizes the special »

In Case You Missed It: ‘The Bat’

14 September 2009 7:59 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

P.S. After seeing ‘The Bat’ 7 out of 8 people will get cold feet tonight!

Okay, I’ve gotta be honest.  I don’t even know what that tagline for the 1959, murder mystery, ‘The Bat,’ means, but evidently it’s supposed to be menacing.  Much like a majority of the film.  It’s supposed to be foreboding and full of danger.  It’s not.  In the end, fun as it might be for the sheer entertainment value, ‘The Bat’ is nothing more than a stagy, hokey version of a story that had been twice before in the film world.

Based on the stage play from the 1920s, ‘The Bat’ tells the story of a masked killer who strikes his victims with steel claws.  Throw into a large mansion, a missing, million dollars,a mystery novelist, and about 84 secondary characters who serve one of two purposes (suspect or victim) and you’ve »

Trailer: Ed Wood's Plan 9 from Outer Space Remake

10 September 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Back in 1959, Ed Wood made the sci-fi movie "Plan 9 From Outer Space" and it has since been known as the worst movie of all time. Fifty years later, director John Johnson decided that it's worth remaking it, but as a serious-minded retelling of the original story. The original revolves around aliens re-animating the dead in order to kill Earth's population. The new version, simply called "Plan 9," will focus on the horror and science fiction aspects of the original, but promises to be largely character-driven. "Even if Eddie was a little off in his filmmaking skills, you cannot deny his passion," said Johnson. "I feel a strong camaraderie for the man and his work, and hope that I can make a film that would be as loved by audiences today as the original was for his generation. Only this time with its true intention." Watch the promo trailer below »

Yes, Ed Wood's "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is being Remade! Hurray? See the Teaser/Trailer!

"Plan 9 from Outer Space" from writer-director Ed Wood Jr. is considered one of the worst films ever made in cinema history!

Released in 1959, the film's plot is about aliens re-animating the dead in order to take over mankind! Now, this cherished cult classic is getting a remake makeover just in time for its 50th anniversary from director John Johnson and Darkstone Entertainment.

The remake is just going to be called "Plan 9" and this is going to be a serious take on the film. Johnson and company will pay homage to the spirit of Wood's film without resorting to camp or parody.

According to the "Plan 9's" official website:

The film will focus on the horror and science fiction aspects of the original, but will also be largely character-driven. Johnson's goal for "Plan 9" is to make a film that honors not only the original source material, but »
