7. Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Recap: A group of Jewish-American soldiers known as the “Inglourious Basterds” are making their way through Nazi occupied France, killing the Germans. But a German Colonel (Christoph Waltz) is out to get them, before they get him.

Reason: It’s really tough to pick a film from 2009 for this list. Have I given it the proper amount of time? Will I feel the same way? »

Trailer for The Lord Of The Rings Blu-ray Box Set Reminds Us All Why We Loved Our Journey Through Middle-Earth

15 December 2009 2:38 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I haven’t watched any of The Lord of the Rings films since 2004 but I’ll definitely be sitting down with them again when they hit Blu-ray on April 6, 2010.  Warner Bros. Home Video just released a two-minute trailer showcasing all the films together again and it was a reminder of why we fell in love with Peter Jackson’s masterful adaptation in the first place.

As we reported yesterday, Wbhv is releasing the theatrical versions of the films in a nine-disc box set which will include the Blu-ray versions of the films, mostly the features from the original DVDs, and a digital copy of each film.  The set will retail for $99.98 but since that’s the Msrp, you’ll probably be able to buy it for slightly less (my guess is somewhere around $75-80, at least when it first goes on sale).  There’s currently no word when we’ll »

AFI Announces 2009 Selections: 10 Outstanding Motion Pictures and TV Programs of the Year

13 December 2009 4:51 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The American Film Institute (AFI) just announced their official selections for the 2009 AFI Awards.  Unlike some end of the year lists that only focus on film, AFI selects 10 outstanding TV Shows to go along with their 10 films. Also, unlike some end of the year lists that only focus on the “serious” films, credit most be given to AFI for making The Hangover one of their 10 outstanding films of 2009.  I think we can all agree it was a great movie that everyone enjoyed.

While you are about to overwhelmed by a ton of different groups releasing what they think are the best movies of 2009, if you have limited time and are a movie fan, my recommendation is to seek out which films are on everyone’s list.  After all, if every group of cranky critics says a movie is a top ten film, it probably is.

AFI’s top films are The Hurt Locker, »

Jackson Says Only Three Lotr Actors Will Return For 'Hobbit'

10 December 2009 5:37 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

There's been a lot of "Hobbit" news as of late, which makes sense, seeing as Peter Jackson is out promoting "Lovely Bones." What I like about the dude is that on top of being friendly, he actually answers questions with no bs attached. Here's what he had to say about returning characters: Jackson is hard at work prepping a return to Middle-earth with "The Hobbit" and has revealed to us that three — and only three — of the "Rings" actors will be returning for the family reunion."Gandalf, being a 2,000-year-old wizard, is still around and plays a major role in 'The Hobbit,' and we're having Ian McKellen reprise," explained the filmmaker, who is executive-producing the flick and writing the screenplay. "There's a couple of other characters: Elrond, who was played by Hugo Weaving [in the original films], and there's a possibility of Galadriel, who was played by Cate Blanchett."With that, the »

Peter Jackson Updates 'Hobbit' Casting and 'Halo'

9 December 2009 9:33 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

So...Hobbit casting. Peter Jackson's talking but we don't have much in the way of Bilbo Baggins talk. However, the producer of the two-parter and the director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy tells MTV we'll get three familiar cast members when The Hobbit rolls around.

Of course, one of those names is no secret: "Gandalf, being a 2,000-year-old wizard, is still around and plays a major role in The Hobbit, and we're having Ian McKellen reprise," Jackson emptily confirms. As for the others, well, it won't Orlando Bloom or Elijah Wood or Sean Astin in some kind of flash forward device. "There's a couple of other characters: Elrond, who was played by Hugo Weaving, and there's a possibility of Galadriel, who was played by Cate Blanchett." »

Which "Lord of the Rings" Stars Will Return for "The Hobbit?" Peter Jackson Says...

9 December 2009 10:56 AM, PST | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Peter Jackson, promoting his latest flick "The Lovely Bones," caught up with MTV News to reveal that three -- only three! -- of the "Lord of the Rings" actors will be returning for "The Hobbit."

Jackson is hard at work preparing the prequel to the J.R.R. Tolkien-written saga. He told MTV,

"Gandalf, being a 2,000-year-old wizard, is still around and plays a major role in 'The Hobbit,' and we're having Ian McKellen reprise," explained the filmmaker, who is executive-producing the flick and writing the screenplay. "There's a couple of other characters: Elrond, who was played by Hugo Weaving [in the original films], and there's a possibility of Galadriel, who was played by Cate Blanchett."

So I hate to break it to you Lotr fans but Orlando Bloom, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen or John Rhys-Davies will not return for any flashbacks or flash-forward sequences.

The Hobbit casting: Tom Waits, Jedward, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett

9 December 2009 6:29 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

When Peter Jackson said casting would begin this week for every role in The Hobbit apart from Ian McKellen's wizard Gandalf, it opened the gate on the rumours and speculation that surround every big production like a cloud of gnats.

Firstly, it's been rumoured somewhere online (it's spread like wildfire so the original source escapes me) that Tom Waits is up for a role in the film.

It's claimed that the singer-songwriter could play either the voice of the dragon Smaug; Beorn, a man who can turn into a giant bear; or Thorin Oakenshield, the dwarf leader.

Waits' film credits include playing Renfield in Bram Stoker's Dracula, Mr Nick in Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus and a role in upcoming The Book Of Eli.

Meanwhile, The Sun claims former X Factor contenders and twins John and Edward Grimes - aka Jedward - have been approached by »

Peter Jackson Talks Returning Lotr Characters for The Hobbit

9 December 2009 5:02 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Peter Jackson is making the rounds hyping up The Hobbit almost six months before the film even begins production.  This time around, he stepped up to MTV, where he confirmed a couple of Lord Of The Ring characters we might see returning.

Gandalf, being a 2,000-year-old wizard, is still around and plays a major role in The Hobbit, and we’re having Ian McKellen reprise.  There’s a couple of other characters: Elrond, who was played by Hugo Weaving [in the original films], and there’s a possibility of Galadriel, who was played by Cate Blanchett.

Jackson was quick to point out the time difference between The Hobbit and the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.  The new film is a prequel that takes place 60 years before the trio of epic stories, so actors like Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom and Sean Astin won’t be making a return.  Jackson did confirm McKellen’s, official involvement in the film, »

Beverly Hills, California — Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" movies thrilled millions of moviegoers, endeared themselves to us, and touched fans so deeply that many feel like Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey, Aragorn, and the rest are members of the family. It's no surprise, then, that they've spent the six years since "Return of the King" wondering if we'll ever see those characters onscreen again. Now, Jackson is hard at work prepping a return to Middle-earth with "The Hobbit" and has revealed to us that three — and only three — of the "Rings" actors will be returning for the family reunion.

Celeb-studded Bible audio book: Dylan McKay as Judas? Holy moly.

16 November 2009 12:00 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Better watch your back, Mel Gibson -- there's a new star-studded Bible in town: A 79-cd audio version, in fact, with quite the illustrious cast. There are a few obvious choices -- ahem, Jim Caviezel as Jesus? -- but a lot more unexpected ones: Jason Alexander as Joseph (as in technicolor dream coat), Lou Diamond Phillips as Mark, Harry Hamlin as Nehemiah, and my favorite, Luke Perry as Judas. Dylan McKay! Is Judas! The mind boggles. Also, Marisa Tomei lends her voice to Mary Magdalene, which is somewhere on the sublime border of "what the hell?" and "actually...yes." Poor »

New Promotional Posters for Upcoming Films Including Neuromancer, Chloe, The Irishman, and I Come With The Rain

12 October 2009 11:10 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Here’s some inside baseball about Hollywood that your average moviegoer may not know: movies do not get made solely from investors or studios nor do they make money solely from domestic box office.  A large majority of films, especially true indie films (i.e. no name stars), require the sale of their foreign distribution rights to finish the film they’re selling or to secure a profit that will provide investors with a good return on their investment.  However, films with name actors like Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Val Kilmer, and Christopher Walken also have to play this game.  Some movies do it by creating unofficial posters and after the jump, we’ve featured six of these posters plus synopses for films with name actors but are still trying to secure funding.  However, this is no guarantee that these films will ever get made and just because someone made up a poster, »

Weekly Poll Results: Best Football Movie

2 September 2009 9:15 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Last week's poll was a battle of pigskin pics, and Film Junk readers decided that the #1 football movie is the inspirational Rudy starring Sean Astin, followed very closely by Remember The Titans starring Denzel Washington. Peter Berg's Friday Night Lights placed third, which isn't bad, but I kind of expected it to get a few more votes, especially because of the popularity of the TV show. Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday and the original The Longest Yard rounded out the top 5. Brian's Song was way down at the bottom, although I'm guessing a lot of people simply haven't seen it? I hear it's a classic. Do you concur with these results? 1. Rudy -- 23.5% 2. Remember The Titans -- 21.2% 3. Friday Night Lights -- 14.2% 4. Any Given Sunday -- 13.3% 5. The Longest Yard (1974) -- 7.5% 6. Jerry Maguire -- 6.6% 7. The Program -- 5.8% 8. The Replacements -- 3.1% 9. We Are Marshall -- 2.7% 10. Brian's Song (1971) -- 2.2% For More Daily Movie Goodness, »

[DVD Review] The Color of Magic

24 July 2009 6:12 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

It would be really easy to bash The Color of Magic (or The Colour of Magic, in its original spelling) for trying to be a cheaper version of Stardust or even Lord of the Rings – but that would be unfair. Those films (books, etc.) may form the foundation of the genre and the standard against which others are measured, but they’re really only relevant when a film is actually trying to mimic them. The Color of Magic isn’t in their tradition. Instead, The Color of Magic is best compared to the made-for-television mini-series The 10th Kingdom, a fairytale romp as humorous as it was flawed. Celebrated fantasy author Terry Pratchett’s novels received a decent made-for-television film adaptation in The Color of Magic, but even when measured against a lower standard like The 10th Kingdom, it falters and eventually fails.

retro trailer: ‘The Goonies’

18 July 2009 9:35 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

It’s funny how different trailers looked even 25 years ago -- this feels really slow, doesn’t it? Look how young Sean Astin is! And Josh Brolin! Can you imagine a movie today calling a kid “Chunk”? It’d never happen -- everyone would be too worried about damaging the self-esteem of all the fat kids in the audience... and there’d be a lot more of them now then there were then. Fat grownups are still acceptable as the butt of humor today, but fat kids seem to be off the table. (I was a fat kid, but I don’t remember being traumatized by Chunk...) Tee-hee: a Gremlins reference right in the trailer! The Goonies is available on DVD in Region 1 and in Region 2. »

20 Years Later, is a 'Goonies II' Finally Coming Our Way?

28 June 2009 9:25 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

According to Chris Columbus, the biggest obstacle to a sequel to The Goonies isn’t reuniting the cast, many of whom have moved on to bigger things. No, the real problem, he says, is creating a believable situation in which modern kids would play outside.

"I don't know if that's possible anymore," Columbus remarked to Sci Fi Wire. "Maybe if all the parents in the new Goonie movie forbid their kids to play on the Internet, that's gotta be the plot. You can't go anywhere near a computer or cell phone. I guess the adventures are online."

The Goonies, released in 1985, came out during what now seems like an idyllic time: the main protagonists were a bunch of kids who lived together in a seaside town called The Goon Docks. Mikey, Mouth, Data and Chunk routinely went on adventures out-of-doors. In the movie, they find a map showing the location »

Some Cannes footage has been put together in trailer-form for upcoming comedy Demoted, which on the strength of this taster looks pretty amusing.Mike (Sean Astin) and Rodney (Michael Vartan) are mid-level employees with a fondness for playing pranks on office jerk Ken Castro (David Cross). But when their kindly boss dies, Castro is promoted to his place and Mike and Rodney are demoted to the secretarial pool.
