What gets an R-Rating? It's complicated...

22 hours ago | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Bodies pile up like dirty socks in the PG-13 Avatar, but Nancy Meyers' classy comedy It's Complicated got an R-rating from the MPAA. What gives? According to the New York Times, board members were uneasy about a sequence in which Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin smoke marijuana at a party with no negative consequences. Seems a little strange to us, since plenty of other movies have shown similar illegal activities without tragic ends. Here's a look at a few highlights (sorry, couldn't resist). The Simple Truth Is It's Complicated Isn't Funny

29 December 2009 7:57 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

The new Nancy Meyers' film It's Complicated has a cast headed by Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. When you have that triumvirate you should have a movie that is special in every sense of the word. It should at least be witty to the extreme, and warm-hearted to boot. These actors are the crème de la crème of Hollywood and Meyers is the director who brought us the charming Something's Got To Give and the heart warming Father of the Bride series. But the plot doesn't quite work, and the stars don't shine as brightly as they should, and... well, it's complicated. Streep plays Jane, a woman who has been divorced for ten years. She has become adjusted to her single life and is relatively happy. She has almost gotten over the fact her husband Jake cheated on her »

Best films of the noughties No 4: Team America: World Police

29 December 2009 12:00 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Matt Stone and Trey Parker's marionette action-musical took gleeful aim at sacred cows of every stripe, and scored

Team America arrived slap bang in the middle of the decade. It was released in the UK in January 2005, the same week as Million Dollar Baby. That film went on to dominate the Oscars; this has one lowly award to its credit (Empire's best comedy).

The two films couldn't be more different: Clint Eastwood's boxing drama was a long warm soak in a puddle of cliches wrung from cheap sports weepies – a drippy homage to cinema at its most conservative.

Team America is a wrecking ball. The most audacious slaughter of sacred cows seen on celluloid, it's a cackling, gleeful hail of precision-aimed bullets, full of brains and ambition. All this despite – or maybe because – it solely features puppets: jerky, wooden, Thunderbirds-esque dollies with all-too-visible strings attached.

What Did You See Over Christmas?

28 December 2009 3:47 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Spent the weekend with food, friends and a stack of DVDs. At the movie theater I tried to see Avatar a second time but failed (I'm holding out for the IMAX experience but it's eternally sold out... at least for people like me who don't plan things weeks in advance). We went to Sherlock Holmes since you have to see a movie with friends and family on Christmas day. It's tradition. And judging on the box office results (biggest Christmas weekend ever) I assume that's tradition for just about everyone.

Avatar $75 (for a $212 total)

It's already earned over $600 million worldwide so it looks like they won't lose their shirts, even with that unthinkably monstrous budget. The world's most important question [cough] right now is this: Will James Cameron make us wait 12 more years for his 9th film? And will it be a sequel to this one? He does like the number 2s. »

It’s Complicated Movie Review

28 December 2009 12:36 PM, PST | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

It certainly is complicated, there's no doubt about it, but does it deliver anything worth bothering with? It's Complicated is the story, more or less, of Jane (Meryl Streep) and Jake (Alec Baldwin). Divorced for a decade, but finally somewhat amicable, the two will run into each other by way of one of their three children's college graduation. Meeting at the hotel bar, they make the most of being cordial, drink a lot, and end up sleeping together. Jake cheated on Jane all those years ago, and ended up marrying his mistress (after she had a fling on him which resulted in a child). Jane took several years getting over it, but has finally gotten a restaurant for herself and some idea of who she is... even if she hasn't quite managed to get into another relationship. So, now... it's complicated. »

Christmas Booms with 'Avatar,' 'Sherlock,' 'Alvin'

28 December 2009 12:05 PM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

The combination of Avatar, Sherlock Holmes, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and other solid titles as well as Christmas landing on a Friday led to the highest-grossing weekend ever. Overall business came in at around $270 million, up 34 percent over the same timeframe last year and surpassing the previous high of $260.5 million set on July 18-20, 2008, when The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia! debuted.

Living up to its hype as the event picture of the season, Avatar was monolithic with $75.6 million, down a mere two percent from its opening. Though boosted by the Christmas holiday, it nonetheless broke the record for highest-grossing second weekend ever, edging out The Dark Knight's $75.2 million. The sci-fi adventure's 3D sites accounted for a 3D-record-setting $57.9 million of the weekend, and the picture posted another rousing performance in IMAX, which contributed an estimated $8.8 million of the weekend gross. In ten days, its tally stands at a whopping $212.7 million, »

#3 "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" ($50.2 million)

#4 "It's Complicated" ($22.1 million)

#5 "Up in the Air" ($11.8 million)

Despite his brilliant deductive reasoning and combat proficiency, Sherlock Holmes proved no match for the Na'vi of Pandora as James Cameron's "Avatar" won first place at the box office for the second weekend in a row. Still, victory wasn't entirely effortless for the 3-D science-fiction epic, as "Avatar" surrendered Wednesday night to the debut of "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" and also succumbed to "Sherlock Holmes" on Friday.

But a closer look at the numbers reveals that "Avatar" never had much to worry about, as the film lost to "Alvin" on Wednesday by a mere $2.4 million and an even smaller »

Avatar Tops Record-Breaking Holiday Weekend

27 December 2009 7:29 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

In its second week in theaters, James Cameron’s Avatar topped the largest weekend box office in history that totaled an estimated $264 million in sales.  The figure may be even higher once the final numbers shake out on Monday.

Cameron’s 3D epic contributed $75 million, the second biggest second weekend in history just behind The Dark Knight’s July 2008 run.  Typically movies will see around a 50% decline between weekends, but Avatar managed to drop only 2.6% from its opening on the way to $212 million domestic and already rank 7th in 2009 grosses.

On top of that, it added another $145 million overseas for an unbelievable worldwide total thus far of $617.3 million.

Warner Bros’ Sherlock Holmes put up equally impressive numbers, setting the Christmas Day record with $24.9M on the holiday opening before tallying $65.4 million through Sunday.  Outside of Iron Man, it’s the biggest weekend for stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, »

Alec Baldwin Trembles on Hosting Oscar With Steve Martin

Alec Baldwin fears he'll have to calm his own nerves at the Oscars because co-host Steve Martin is "fragile" under pressure. The actor was hoping Martin's experience as a comedian and former Academy Awards host would help him overcome his stage terror before the big awards show in March 2010, but Martin is already a wreck.

Baldwin's fears were heightened after seeing firsthand how frazzled Martin can unravel under pressure - after the pair co-starred in new movie, "It's Complicated". He adds, "I had a lot of faith in the fact that he had done the show twice before and I thought, »

Audiences Leave Their Holmes And Make Avatar #1 Two Weeks In A Row.

Loved it, hated it, it didn't matter. In the end, James Cameron's Avatar has quieted the "It'll bomb." naysayers. Avatar held on to its #1 slot for two weeks in a row with $75 million. It has made $615 million dollars worldwide in just two weeks. An incredible number considering its 2:45 run time. It is also the #1 Environmentalist movie ever made. Suck on that, Bio-Dome.Despite the good word of mouth and the ton of heat behind Robert Downey Jr., it could not topple the mighty Smurf movie. But Sherlock held its own, bringing in $65.3 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel also killed at the box office bringing in $50.2 million in its debut, almost guaranteeing a third film in the franchise. My God, did anyone Not go see a movie this weekend??I guess America decided to ignore my review of It's Complicated. The movie did surprising well considering the competition. »

27 December 2009 12:31 PM, PST | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Hollywood celebrated a merry Christmas with shattered box-office records! Moviegoers spent the weekend enjoying high-profile releases. The estimated $278 million box-office take broke the previous record of $253 million set in July 2008 when "The Dark Knight" was released.

For a while, at least on its opening day, "Sherlock Holmes" was poised to take the box-office crown earning a record Christmas day debut of $24.9 million.

But James Cameron's "Avatar" regained its audience over the weekend, topping the box office with merely a 3 percent drop from its opening weekend. The sci-fi flick earned $75 million for the No. 1 crown!

Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law must settle for the No. 2 spot. Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" opened with a very impressive $65.4 million box office take.

"Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" took in $50.2 million on the weekend, and $77.1 million since it opened Wednesday. Also opening strongly was "It's Complicated" starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, »
