New Zealand Billboard for American Psycho

8 hours ago | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

While the TV airing of a 10 year old film isn't exactly "news", this promotional advertisement for an upcoming TV airing of Mary Harron's American Psycho on New Zealand station TV2 was too cool not to share with our devoted readers and fellow horror enthusiasts. The Hollywood Reporter Live Feed Blog pointed out the billboard that was erected to showcase the classic business card scene. Granted, if you've never seen the movie, the billboard will probably make no sense. However, if you have, it's a pretty cool and unique way to promote the movie's TV airing. Based on the Bret Easton Ellis novel, American Psycho stars Christian Bale, Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Chloë Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon, Samantha Mathis, Jared Leto and Willem Dafoe. It made our Top 25 of the »

2009 In 60 Seconds: Relive Lady Gaga's Breakout, 'New Moon' Fever, More

MTV News' Jim Cantiello squeezes a year's worth of WTFs into one minute.

Summing up 2009 in one minute is kind of like trying to convince Lady Gaga to go to dinner in flats, jeans, a ratty T-shirt and no makeup: virtually impossible, but so totally worth trying.

This was, after all, a year that began with the inauguration of the real Man From Hope, the country's first black president, Barack Obama, who took office promising lots of change and a whole new attitude in Washington. And while he hasn't yet gotten us out of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and is still working on pulling us out of a gargantuan economic tailspin, we can at least take solace in the fact that those old fogies the Jonas Brothers were replaced by another New Kid on the Block, »

Bazmann’s Christmas Address

25 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

It’s been a great year for the British film industry. It kicked off with the British invasion of the Oscars, with notable wins for Kate Winslet, and Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. The huge amount of British Actors plying their trade successfully in Hollywood continued to grow, with Scot Gerard Butler particularly in demand with parts in Gamer, The Ugly Truth and Law Abiding Citizen.

British filmmakers have been responsible for some of the more interesting films this year. Duncan Jone’s Moon was a brilliant yet under appreciated sci-fi drama. Fish Tank and Harry Brown lead the way for low budget drama. Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus finally found a distributor. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince became the highest grossing British movie of all time.

British film festivals Raindance and the BFI London Film Festival saw record attendances, and showcased some great films from home, »

Socking It To Santa: Comic Book Christmas Stockings

24 December 2009 9:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The holiday season inspires many wonderful novelty items for decorating one's house, but aside from tree ornaments and wrapping paper, there aren't many outlets for comic book stars to shine.

That's why when it comes to hanging out for the holidays, stockings are an enjoyable way to capitalize on one's super hero movie fandom without getting too tacky.

Here's a rundown of a few appropriate choices for the season, along with a look at the cinematic future of each franchise. (Image courtesy of The Deadpool Bugle and artist Paco Medina.)

Iron Man

Shellhead's heavy-duty armor plating may not seem like a logical choice for a typically plushy decoration, but movie and comic fans alike can't resist the charm of an Iron Man novelty. This summer's "Iron Man 2" will likely have a positive effect on next winter's stocking offerings – if folks can reconcile War Machine with "peace on earth and good will toward super villains. »

[DVD Review] Public Enemies - Special Edition

24 December 2009 4:56 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Michael Mann is a director who doesn’t do anything by halves. He’s a storyteller who knows exactly what he likes and returns to those themes again and again; skilled professionals compelled to do, be it good or evil; forbidden love; architecture and cityscapes; and the crisp visceral snap of digital video. Public Enemies, the tale of folk hero bank robber John Dillenger, is a film that brings together all of the above and more, but with a twist. This is not a period pastiche or a well-researched mock-up. Armed with light, portable, high definition cameras, Mann brings depression era America to life with highly mobile faux-documentary styling that sparks with a gloss and a sheen that positively pops off the screen.

Of course Mann has played cops and robbers before, and with 1995’s underworld epic Heat he brought together the two finest actors of their generation in Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. »

Sam Worthington in Consideration for 'Flash Gordon'

24 December 2009 12:26 AM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

There is a chance Sam Worthington will be a comic book hero in his next feature project. Recent report has suggested that the leading man of the James Cameron-directed "Avatar" is among the top contenders for the lead role of "Flash Gordon" should Columbia Pictures move on with its feature project plan.

"Right now it's between Sam, Ryan Reynolds and one or two others for the lead role should the project actually get off the ground," a Hollywood insider talked about the likelihood of the 33-year-old taking the title role. Considering that Sam is an Australian actor, the insider added, "If he gets the role it would be quite a big deal as Flash is an all-American hero."

"Flash Gordon" is based on the classic strip originally drawn by Alex Raymond. The story centers around a young polo player who has been kidnapped and taken to planet Mongo. In the strange planet, »

Films Of The Decade – Ed’s List

23 December 2009 5:17 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Each decade of celluloid is defined by its psychological preoccupations. Oh yes it is, don’t look at me like that. The 9/11 terror attacks on New York and Washington cast a long shadow over the first decade of the 21st century. The Nineties had been a relatively stable and optimistic era by comparison and was all the more moribund for it. Tom Sizemore’s speech in Katherine Bigelow’s Strange Days (1995) summed up the emerging consensus – “everything’s been done, every kind of music’s been tried, every government’s been tried, every fuckin’ hairstyle. How you gonna make it another thousand years, for Chrissake?”

But it wasn’t quite the end of history after all. After 9/11 the zeitgeist became politically-charged once more as it had been in more polarised times. Entertainment was not immune from this effect, nor could it afford to be. With rare exceptions such as Paul Greengrass »

The Best of the Decade: 2000-2009

23 December 2009 9:56 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

A best of the decade list is an incredible thing to consider. The Aughts were ripe with imagination and originality. The past ten years also came jam packed with many new visionary directors that changed the cinematic landscape forever. Yet, at the same time, it was also a decade wrought with remakes, rip-offs, ten-year late sequels, and films based on preexisting toy properties, comic books, and amusement park rides. George Lucas offended almost everyone by dusting off his Star Wars mythos and adding copious amounts of CGI to it. And Batman, a caped figure in tights who last flourished in the trippy sixties, managed to crawl head and shoulders above the rest at the box office to be crowned king. Thus proving that the so-called "geek" or "fanboy" truly ruled the silver screen over the course of this tumultuous past decade. Today, we look at the ten films that ruled »

Boos! & Whoop-doos!: 12 Months of Toilet Plunkers and Dumpster Diamonds!

23 December 2009 9:55 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Avatar is centered around the themes of imperialism and biodiversity. The movie had been in development since 1994 by Cameron, who wrote a 114-page scriptment for the film. Cameron explained that the delay in producing the film since the 1990s had been to wait until the technology necessary to create his project was advanced enough. The film received generally positive reviews from film critics.

New ‘Knight & Day’ Trailer Looks Nuts

22 December 2009 7:51 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

As wacky and unlikeable as Tom Cruise is, you have to hand it to the guy: there’s a reason he got successful in this business in the first place. The man is dynamic as all get-out, and that charisma is half the reason that this trailer for the upcoming Knight & Day works.

Directed by 3:10 to Yuma’s James Mangold, Knight & Day will be in theaters on July 2, 2010. The construction of the trailer, while falling flat on some comedic beats, does give a good indication of what the plot of the film is.

Knight & Day stars Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Maggie Grace, Peter Sarsgaard and Paul Dano. Check out the trailer below!

AMC Talks With 'Avatar' Star Stephen Lang

It has been an incredible week for the new James Cameron film "Avatar" as it opened to rave reviews, huge fan praise and crushed December box office records.  The success of "Avatar" also adds to a great year for actor Stephen Lang  who plays the lead antagonist in the film, Colonel Miles Quaritch.  Earlier this year Lang appeared in the Johnny Depp/Christian Bale film "Public Enemies.

Earlier today AMC Script-To-Screen editor John Campea had the chance to chat with Lang about his experience on "Public Enemies", the challenges of acting in virtual environments, the fun of having your own personal mech battle armor and much more.

What are the best and worst movie accents of the decade?

21 December 2009 11:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Yesterday, NPR printed an article about the best and worst movie accents of the decade, asking readers to submit their votes on what actor should nab the award in both categories. As the EW writer who a few years ago helmed our Worst Movie Accents gallery, I decided to look at their choices. (And, unfortunately, since film's all-time worst movie accent -- Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves -- was brought to screens in 1991, it is not eligible for this award.) As far as the best accents go, NPR offers up four: Morgan Freeman in Invictus, Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean, »

The Decade’s Film: 2005-2009

21 December 2009 7:33 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

It had been a successful decade for the comic book movie, with that trend continuing into the latter half of the decade. Just as looked like the public demand for irradiated heroes looked to be diminishing, with lacklustre showings from the likes of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four, out came Iron Man. Coupled with a brilliant script and an excellent performance from Robert Downey Jr as the titular zillionaire industrialist/playboy/freedom fighter/all-round genius, the end result was something truly special. Downey’s career was also revitalised, earning him a role in Tropic Thunder (which would earn him an Oscar nomination). Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk took a similar approach, this time giving Edward Norton of Fight Club fame a shot at getting under the skin of the green goliath.  They set a tough act to follow, but followed they were by one Christopher Nolan. Hugh Jackman is Starring in Antoine Fuqua's Prisoners Movie?

21 December 2009 6:15 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Late last week, the Valley Independent Sentinel in Connecticut reported on casting for Antoine Fuqua's Prisoners project which is supposed to start shooting in Derby and Shelton, Connect. next February. The paper talks about casting 750 extras for the film and shooting in the city. They also mention that "local officials said they’ve been told Hugh Jackman is attached to the movie." Originally we had heard rumors about Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale being attached, but when Fuqua took over, I thought he dumped that old cast. Could Jackman be the first big actor cast in Fuqua's version? I'd be very happy if this is true. Prisoners, written by newcomer Aaron Guzikowski, is a dark tale about a man who, after his daughter and her friend are kidnapped and the cops fail to solve the crime, takes matters into his own hands, holding hostage the person he suspects committed the crime. »

/Film Editor-In-Chief Peter Sciretta Named One of the Most Influential People in Film

Let's do a mental exercise. Picture the most influential people in movies today. A few directors would probably come to mind: Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, Danny Boyle, Michael Bay, David Fincher, Judd Apatow, Jj Abrams, the Coen Bros, etc. It might also occur to you to throw some actors into the mix as well; Matt Damon, George Clooney, Christian Bale, and Will Smith would be just a few of the folks that would make it onto your list. These guys are all heavy-hitters, playing in the big leagues, helping to dictate the direction and the success of Hollywood. Overall, I think you could probably compile a pretty interesting list of 100 people that are influential in the film industry today. In fact, that's exactly what Total Film magazine did recently in their -- hey...Wtf is /Film Editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta doing on here?! A couple weeks ago, The Guardian named /Film »

Watch This: 2009 At The Movies

19 December 2009 5:25 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

If only the year in movies was one three-minute music video montage of memorable moments. Instead, some of the images we'll remember were from bad movie, just like it is in every year.

But now is no the time to separate the good from the bad. In a new video assembled by Zack Young, the year in movies is set to Acarde Fire's "Wake Up," and the effects of Avatar are side-by-side with 2012 and A Serious Man mingles with a way too serious Christian Bale in Terminator Salvation. And even though I think the year as a whole is less impressive than previous years (particularly here in awards season, where most of the contenders are coming up short), this is still a fantastic way to spend a few minutes.

Young does a great editing job here; it's not just clips randomly thrown together, which given the number of films represented, »

Top 7 Movies of the Decade (another opinion)

19 December 2009 5:09 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

I have always struggled with the notion that perhaps movies, as a whole, are getting worse. As anyone who has seen what’s been playing for the past ten years will notice, there’s plenty of evidence to indicate that the brightness from the moving pictures is getting darker. Screenwriters and directors are sticking to formulas when hesitant to experiment with their creative juices, and at the same time, big studios are playing it safe by adapting anything in sight. But while many movies crowd up the marquee like a group of regular students with satisfying GPAs, cinema has still been able to continue thanks to true poindexters of the art, those who craft experiences so fulfilling and basically perfect that the deconstruction of “the movies” seems to still be a myth. With films like Talk to Her, Superbad, and There Will Be Blood, »
