John Barry Plays For "Beat Girl"

14 December 2009 8:03 AM, PST | SneakPeek | See recent SneakPeek news »

"Beat Girl" is the 1959 British indie film about late-fifties youth-rebellion, introducing actress Gillian Hills, who followed up with small roles in "Blowup" and "A Clockwork Orange.

The music was by a 7-piece jazz group led by composer John Barry.

Barry, who would later be revered for his "James Bond" soundtracks, was managing singer Adam Faith at the time. Barry's music for the film became the first movie soundtrack LP to be released in the UK.

"Beat Girl" was released in North America under the title "Wild for Kicks", featuring additional stripper scenes not in the British version, that was banned at the time, as well as additional music not on the soundtrack LP.

Thanks to SneakPeekTV, you can watch the entire "Beat Girl" feature below...

Spotlight: Revelations about Ádám Balázs

3 October 2009 12:11 AM, PDT | Daily Film Music Blog | See recent Daily Film Music Blog news »

I wish I had the chance to interview more compatriot composers here, but fact is there are very few Hungarian film composers I could talk to. Adam Balazs is one of them - although he lives in Los Angeles, he recently completed his first score to a Hungarian movie: Szíven szúrt ország is a documentary about the murder of a handball player whose tragic death brought forward many unresolved issues within the country. In addition to this new documentary, Ádám's new movie The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations will have a soundtrack CD released pretty soon, which is a first for the composer (although several of his scores are available through download options). We discussed these and a number of other projects in the following interview:

How did your interest in music begin?

I grew up in a fully musical environment — my father is a distinguished classical composer and before her retirement, »

Manics, Barlow, pen Bassey tracks

Dame Shirley Bassey has collaborated with a number of artists on her upcoming album. Writers for the record include Manic Street Preachers, Gary Barlow, Pet Shop Boys, KT Tunstall, Richard Hawley, John Barry and Don Black, the BBC reports. Titled The Performance, the follow-up to 2007's covers album Get The Party Started will be produced by James Bond movie composer David Arnold. Arnold said: "All these songs were just songs, until Dame Shirley Bassey sang them. "There's something about a Bassey performance that can knock the wind out of your sails, make you laugh, make you cry, let you in on the joke or be led to a more exotic place." The (more) »

The Blu-Ray Review: Goldfinger (1964)

2 September 2009 5:06 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Colin Jacobson reviews the James Bond classic in HD.

For my money, Bond never got any better than Goldfinger. The series got bigger and flashier, but no film ever portrayed the fun, action, and danger, and the high-tech nuttiness of the world of James Bond any more perfectly than this 1964 classic. This was the film that convinced me that Sean Connery was unquestionably the best Bond ever. It may sound like heresy, but for much of my life, I thought Roger Moore defined the character. It's a matter of timing. By the time I became interested in the series in 1979 with Moonraker, Connery had been without his license to kill for eight years and Moore was firmly ensconced in the role. Considering that these were the days before common and affordable VCRs, that meant that for all intents, Moore was Bond to my generation. We had very little experience with anyone else. »

The Blu-Ray Review: From Russia With Love (1963)

26 August 2009 4:13 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Colin reviews the second James Bond film in the series.

For reasons that seem absolutely mystifying to me now, I used to dislike 1963's From Russia With Love, the second James Bond film. I always liked its predecessor, 1962's Dr. No, and I absolutely adored the follow-up, 1964's Goldfinger.

For reasons unknown, I just couldn't get into Russia. I vaguely recall an impression that it was dull and slow moving, but now that I've seen it again, I think I must have watched it on Opposite Day, for the truth of the matter is quite different from my old perception.

In fact, I now feel that Russia is clearly one of the best Bond films. It surpasses Dr. No and definitely rivals Goldfinger and 1965's Thunderball. Man, what was I thinking when I disliked this movie? I guess I'm not infallible after all!

In any case, I find Russia to »

Music: Review:The Postmarks: Memoirs At The End Of The World

24 August 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Miami’s Postmarks trade, at least partly, on atmosphere: twangy surf guitars, rumbling tympani overdubs, spy-flick strings, Tim Yehezkely’s calm, unfettered croon. Memoirs At The End Of The World, the band’s third album and second of originals (2008’s By The Numbers was all covers), is its most obviously assured: Yehezkely and her bandmates have crafted their moodiest, sturdiest arrangements yet, and the results sound sumptuous, from the wah-wah guitar, loose-limbed beat, and swept-away strings and horns of “The Girl From Algenib” to the John Barry-esque quasi-movie-music of “Theme From ‘Memoirs’” and “Run Away Love.” But for all »

Joe Dante Classic Film Festival Now At New Beverly Cinema, L.A.

The off-beat 1967 comedy The President's Analyst is among the films being screened by Joe Dante. Director Joe Dante has sent us this press release regarding an exciting classic and cult movie festival he is hosting at the New Beverly Cinema in L.A. Don't miss his appearance on August 5 when he and Bruce Dern will be screening The Burbs and Smile.

Remember, Movies Are Your Best Entertainment!  Down With Pay TV!   Aug. 5-6 The Burbs/Smile  - It's cheeky of me to pair my own behavioral neighborhood comedy with Michael Ritchie's brilliantly observed social satire (American Beauty eat your heart out!), but both feature one of the movies' best, most underappreciated actors, Bruce Dern. Four Inevitable Disney Live-Action Remakes

12 March 2009 6:28 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

This week's "Race to Witch Mountain," starring Dwayne Johnson and Carla Gugino, is the latest remake-- ahem, modern reimagining from Walt Disney Studios. Though the Mouse House's animated classics remain sacrosanct (if the jumping-off point of direct-to-dvd sequels), the live-action library has been pillaged for endless redos intended for theaters or the Disney Channel, which is where a previous remake of "Escape to Witch Mountain" starring Robert Vaughn and Brad Dourif premiered in 1995. Nothing is safe from the remake button over at Disney, so here are four more properties we fully expect to receive the same treatment in the near future, and proposals on how best to bring the projects into the 21st century. The only reason the immortally cheesy "Tron" didn't make the list is because they're already shooting a sequel.

Concert Review: The New York Pops Plays The Music Of James Bond At Carnegie Hall

11 March 2009 1:18 PM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

The music of James Bond has topped the charts around the world, as evidenced by this rare Japanese 45 Rpm release of John Barry's famous theme song. By Lee Pfeiffer

Last Friday's tribute to the music of James Bond at Carnegie Hall was a magnificent evening of entertainment. The New York Pops, under the direction of conductor Carl Davis, did justice to the canon of great film themes that have characterized the 007 movies. To the relief of Bond fans, the Pops did nothing to "soup up" the arrangements of the familiar songs, opting instead to perform the traditional arrangements. The two hour-plus event managed to incorporate almost all of the main title themes which were played more or less in sequential order, and it was especially rewarding to hear Burt Bacharach's The Look of Love included, despite the fact that it derived from the mostly-detested 1967 slapstick version of Casino Royale. »

For Your Ears Only: New York Pops James Bond Concert At Carnegie Hall, This Friday March 6

4 March 2009 5:44 AM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

By Lee Pfeiffer

The esteemed New York Pops will celebrate the legacy of James Bond movie soundtracks on Friday with a major concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The orchestra will be conducted by Carl Davis, who will be joined by vocalists Mary Carewe and Simon Bowman, who are both making their Carnegie Hall debuts. The concert will include the themes from all of the Bond films through Casino Royale. Refreshingly, the Pops concert will also pay tribute to the "renegade" 1967 version of Casino Royale by including the Oscar-nominated Burt Bacharach song The Look of Love. Your humble editor-in-chief will be on hand to cover the event, along with legions of Cinema Retro readers and subscribers. Several years ago, I attended a muscial tribute to John Barry's score for The Lion in Winter at Carnegie Hall, and it was an evening to remember, highlighted by spending time with Barry himself. »

'The Last Hard Men" Score- The Final Word

1 March 2009 8:56 PM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

We keep getting letters from readers around the world that add interesting insights into the fact that Fox reused portions of Jerry Goldsmith's previous scores for the 1976 western The Last Hard Men. Now comes this informative letter:

My name is Gergely Hubai. I'm a Hungarian film music author.

I feel that I must clarify this particular story. This is what happened: Jerry Goldsmith never worked on The Last Hard Men (he was working on The Omen at that time). What happened was that Andrew. McLaglen requested an avantgarde score from composer Leonard Rosenman, which was eventually thrown out because it turned out it wasn't what he was looking for. Apparently he wanted to reflect the early 20th century setting by having contemporary avantgarde music playing in the picture or something to that effect. Eventually the studio pulled out a number of cues from previous Goldsmith Westerns, including 100 Rifles and Stagecoach. »

Did Composer Jerry Goldsmith Recycle His Score?

1 March 2009 4:27 AM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Issue #4 covers the filming of 100 Rifles in our tribute Jim Brown: The First Black Action Hero. Here, big Jim gets up close and personal with Raquel Welch in their groundbreaking love scene. Following our recent reference to the 1976 western The Last Hard Men, Graham Rye wrote to tell us that Jerry Goldsmith's score for the film was primarily lifted from his earlier work on 100 Rifles.

See if you agree with Graham's observations:

"It was more or less the same score, slightly differently arranged, but the main them was the same. I remember from when I originally saw The Last Hard Men in the cinema. As I sat watching it, I thought, "Blimey, he's used the same score from 100 Rifles (a score I particularly enjoyed in 1969) - crafty bugger!" I had a LeRoy Holmes LP that covered a number of western themes, one of which was 100 Rifles. I think »
