10 Most Fascinating 'End of the World' Movies

8 November 2009 4:59 AM, PST | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

There are many theories, ideas or should I say 'schools of thought' on how the world would end. At the height of the Cold War, nuclear annihilation ranks at the very top. While others argue it will not be man who will destroy the world (directly) but - an epidemic of global proportions (most probably from a potent strain of virus - think: I am Legend) or severe climactic change (another ice age perhaps? That would be Day After Tommorow right?) or mechanical uprising (The Terminator, anyone?) or even attack from the outside - conquering aliens (Mars Attacks!) or perhaps an asteroid. And let's not forget zombies!

Wanna make any action movie or thriller veer into badass territory? Get Michael Biehn onboard. Even better - have him direct it! The original Kyle Reese just got started on his directorial debut called The Blood Bond, a U.S-China co-production aspiring to be "an action film that would combine east and west in a believable manner".The story follows a quest to save an Asian spiritual leader whose rare blood type only has one donor left alive in the fictional war-torn nation of... »

Fall Frights: Grindhouse (Film Review)

20 October 2009 1:16 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Originally published, 04/01/2007

In the Robert Rodriguez-scripted/directed first of its two conjoined movies, Grindhouse is the ultimate sugar rush for horror fans, a high-calorie, low-nutrition blast of cheap thrills wrought on a big budget. In the second, Quentin Tarantino upends the framework and traditions of exploitation fare to craft a film that’s just as much a showcase for his gift of (writing) gab as it is for action. And in both Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof, a love and respect shines through for the B-movie tradition that too many others “homage” with snarky irony. The wholeheartedness with which they express their devotion to the form almost amounts to a kind of innocence, and for all the explicit mayhem on screen, »

I Think About Movies Too Much.

27 August 2009 5:38 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I do. There's something wrong with me.

on MSNBC today and my mind literally launched into an instant (and instantly inappropriate) interior monologueWhy would people want to watch The Abyss when they're broke? James Cameron's movies always look so expensive. But I'm glad people are rediscovering it. It's so blue and tense and claustr

A second later I realized that I was thinking about Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (what happened to her?), mice who learn to breathe in water, Michael Biehn's moustache, serpentine watery intruders and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation instead of worrying about my fellow citizens and how they're going to pay their bills.

I think about movies all the time.

If you're reading I'm just assuming you have this problem, too. We're in it together and since nothing can be done we drink them up and learn to breath them in. There is no escape from this escapism.

Retro Cafe: Was 'Aliens' the Best Science Fiction Sequel Ever?

19 August 2009 12:05 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

"There Are Some Places In The Universe You Don't Go Alone."

So said the tag line advertising the main feature at London's Odeon Leicester Square in August 1986. The film on show was Aliens, the eagerly anticipated sequel to the 1979 sci-fi horror movie Alien. Fans of the first film had waited a long time to see what new horrors would be inflicted on Alien's heroine, Ellen Ripley, and her beloved cat. Some feared the cat might be the unfortunate host of writer and director James Cameron's new generation of stomach-bursting beasts. The young Canadian director was keeping the truth close to his chest, though.

Despite the secrecy, moviegoers and critics were optimistic that they would get something good from the man who had thrilled them with The Terminator. As one of them, I went to the Odeon Leicester Square to see Aliens one week after it went on general »

Go Behind the Badge with Dark Blue

15 July 2009 5:53 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

We take in a press conference with stars Dylan McDermott, Omari Hardwick, Logan Marshall-Green and Nicki Aycox for this new TNT series

The successful cable network TNT has "known drama" for many years and some of their staples have been police procedurals like the hit series' The Closer and Saving Grace. The network is taking it another, darker, step forward with the new series Dark Blue, which premieres on Wednesday, July 15 at 10 Pm Et, right after the second season premiere of the amazing series Leverage at 9 Pm Et. While you may think "Oh, another cop drama," think again because this series has something that no other cable series can boast: mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer serving as executive producer. Of course, the series has much more to offer than just Bruckheimer's Midas Touch, so to speak, with a wonderful cast.

Dylan McDermott headlines this series, which takes a much deeper look into »

50 Cent to Remove Tattoos for Movie Career

14 July 2009 6:30 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson (Righteous Kill) has opted to have some of his very prominent tattoos removed, to better accommodate his career in Hollywood. "I took some of the tattoos off because on the movie set, if we got a six o'clock call time, I have to be there two o'clock the night before," he explained to AllHipHop. "I gotta go through four hours of make up before we go ahead and play the role. So, I just took it off my arm. My right arm." The G-Unit founder has not completely done away with his tattoo. He still bears the two on his back, the signature "50 Cent" and "Southside" tattoos. 50 Cent will next be seen in "Streets of Blood," which stars Val Kilmer, Sharon Stone and Michael Biehn. The new movie is about the street gangs and corrupt law enforcement in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans. »

A Fan’s Response To ‘Terminator Salvation’

26 May 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I decided to brave the New York City holiday weekend crowds on Sunday morning so I could check out “Terminator Salvation,” the latest in that much-loved series from my childhood. “Terminator” and “T2: Judgment Day” have long been personal favorites; not so much with “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,” though I think it’s better than the sizable group of haters would like people to believe. As for the TV series, I’ve already discussed my disappointment at the cancellation of “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” here on the blog.

Okay. Back to “Salvation.” Needless to say, spoilers are to come. If you want a proper review, I encourage you to check out Kurt Loder’s more detailed assessment on MTV.com. It’s an interesting beast, “Terminator Salvation.” All previous incarnations of the franchise have dealt with protecting the Connor family and preventing mankind’s fall at the »

Talking Terminator

24 May 2009 12:24 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Pass the cigars. I've had a lovechild ... a baby Vodcast with Cinema Blend's Katey Rich. You've heard her on the Tfe podcast and now you can see her. She's more practical than I and talked me off of the ledge of my extravagantly ambitious ideas. Basically I always try to do acrobatics before learning to crawl. For the first vodcast I was thinking ornate costumes, visual effects, multiple camera angles, original score. She suggested a more dogme 95 approach -- less frills, more talking at the camera --smart girl.

The topic: Terminator Salvation and the franchise. Four movies, three spoilers, two opinions and one ass shot (Michael Biehn's, 1984).

Update: You can also watch it on YouTube but it's an abbreviated version.

This will function as Part 3 of my Terminator Special. I'm worn out and I don't wanna watch Rise of the Machines again. I don't wanna so I don't gotta. »

Poll: The Many John Connors Of The ‘Terminator’ Series… Which Do You Prefer?

21 May 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Today’s release of “Terminator Salvation” marks the arrival of the fourth actor to play John Connor, son of Sarah Connor and the future savior of post-Judgment Day humanity. Christian Bale is the new guy, and trailers so far have suggested that he brings some of that “Batman” darkness to the role. Whatever you want to think about that unfortunate meltdown of his, this is a good pairing of character and actor.

Sarah (Linda Hamilton) is Skynet’s target in the first movie, and her protector Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) is the man who turns out to be John’s father. John Connor doesn’t actually appear in the flesh until the second movie, “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” There he is played by a teenage Edward Furlong, who manages to deliver a nice balance between whiny punk and future savior of humanity.

Furlong is replaced by Nick Stahl in »

Ranking The Top 8 Hunks Of Terminator

21 May 2009 9:07 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

For some, the Terminator franchise has always been about the robots-- the T-800 good guy, the T-800 bad guy, the T-1000 liquid metal guy, the new Harvester bot that carries people inside it. And for some, maybe many, the franchise will always be defined by Linda Hamilton and her ridiculous guns in Terminator 2. But those of us attracted to men have always known the biggest draw of the franchise-- a relentless stream of hunks, starting with naked Michael Biehn crouching in an alleyway back in 1984's Terminator and culminating this weekend in Sam Worthington, the manliest Australian superstar since Mel Gibson in the Mad Max era. Join me, won't you, for a ranking of the Hunks of Terminator, figuring out a way to compare Arnold Schwarzenegger's icy cool with Anton Yelchin's scrappy fighting spirit. Lucky for you, three men on this list are in Terminator: Salvation this weekend. »

Running Time: 1 hr 50 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: May 21, 2009

Click here to read Nick Allen’s Top 7 Ultimate Christian Bale Roles

Plot: After Judgement Day and in the year 2018, Skynet and all of its terminator toys are trying to kill all the people left on Earth. John Connor (Bale) must fulfill his destiny and try to save Kyle Reese (Yelchin). A man (Worthington) from the past is thrown into the situation, simply trying to make sense of all the destruction around him.

Who’s It For? For those that are sad about “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” getting cancelled, here’s your only hope for Terminator to live on. Plus there’s some big, eye-popping explosions. There is a ton of shooting, but nothing overly violent, so it’s a well-deserved PG-13 rating. »

"Terminator Salvation" Movie Review -- Is the Film a Good Addition to the "Terminator" Franchise?

19 May 2009 9:33 PM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

I was prepared to hate .Terminator Salvation.. How can director McG top the stellar productions of the first two .Terminator. films by James Cameron? Besides, the third movie of the franchise was a forgettable mess.

The writers of the third .Terminator,. John D. Brancato and Michael Ferris, in an attempt to erase that movie from our memories, also wrote the fourth film. And now, Brancato and Ferris are forgiven. .Terminator Salvation. is a worthy addition to the franchise.

The best part of the film is its Western structure. .Terminator Salvation. borrows myths and conventions from good, old Western films in order to come up with a flawed but ultimately satisfying movie.

The film is set in the year 2018. Judgment Day has come and gone. Now, an army of Terminators roams the desolate, post-apocalyptic landscape. But small groups of survivors have organized into a Resistance. »

The Terminator (1984)

Part 1 of 3 Terminator Franchise Retrospective.

Spoilers abound but you've had 25 years to see this picture...

"Tech Noir"

In March of 1984 when The Terminator began filming, the director James Cameron and the producer Gale Ann Hurd were no Hollywood heavyweights. Cameron was no one's idea of a visionary (except for perhaps his own) and had only one feature under his belt, Piranha 2: The Spawning -- auspicious beginnings! Hurd had learned the production ropes on B movies for Roger Corman. Cameron and Hurd intended for the dark, fast and cheaply made robot movie to be their calling card. Seven months later in October the movie premiered with only its deceptively simple premise (killer machine hunts woman) and Conan the Barbarian (Arnold Schwarzenegger) to sell it. The Terminator was an immediate hit, though not quite a blockbuster. It earned a Conan-like $38 million gross in its initial run (which I believe is something »
