Magician/Actor Ballantine Dead At 92

5 November 2009 2:06 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Comedy magician and actor Carl Ballantine has died of natural causes at his home in the Hollywood Hills. He was 92.

A U.S. TV favourite, Ballantine became beloved for his cabaret act on variety shows but he's perhaps best remembered as Lester Gruber on 1960s sitcom McHale's Navy, which also featured Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway.

Billed as The Amazing Ballantine, the actor played an inept illusionist on shows like the Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show.

He received a Lifetime Achievement Fellowship from the Magic Castle in Hollywood in 2007.

Funnyman Steve Martin, who presented Ballantine with the honour, tells the Los Angeles Times newspaper, "Carl Ballantine influenced not only myself but a generation of magicians and comedians. His was also the most copied act by a host of amateurs and professionals."

Another fan, David Copperfield, tells the Times, "Carl Ballantine created comedy magic. The combination of magic and comedy had perhaps been done before, but he truly defined it and made it his own." »

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Review

15 October 2009 2:29 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I had a friend who had done some jail time. I was always very curious about this because I knew that it would be hugely unlikely I would ever see the inside of a cell (knock on wood). He told that one of the most beloved movies by prisoners was Wizard of Oz. This made all the sense in the world. Wizard of Oz is the ultimate escapist fantasy, which betrays the film’s original message. My thoughts after the jump.

Ironically, what people remember most is the vivid Technicolor of Oz more than the sepia toned world of Kansas. We love our family, but the imagination is stirred by everything that happens when not at home, when not in a safe place. And yet that simple message that there is no place like home, that desire to return to one’s family is pretty profound in the movie. Wizard of Oz, »

Anyone could write a better headline than EW, so prove it

9 October 2009 8:26 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

That bastion of journalistic excellence, Entertainment Weekly, unveiled their new cover and (surprise!) Letterman made the cover. It features the Late Show host without pants, which in any other context would be the lowest selling issue of EW since Ernest Borgnine forgot to put on underpants.

My problem isn't with the picture, although it seems it probably should be. It's the headline. Is "Oh, Dave" the best they could do? Hell, "Where the Wild Things Are" would be ten times better and save a fifth of the print space. Write a better headline in the comments section below and we'll feature the best ones in a future post.

Michael J. Fox wins Emmy No. 5 for 'Rescue Me'

13 September 2009 10:23 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Michael J. Fox won his first Emmy on the drama side for a recurring role on "Rescue Me" as the wheelchair-bound boyfriend of Denis Leary's ex. Fox had contended in this guest actor category in 2006 for a guest spot on "Boston Legal" (he lost to Christian Clemenson on that same show). Fox's four other Emmy wins came for comedy - three consecutive lead actor awards for "Family Ties" (1986-1988) and another for his final season on "Spin City" in 2000.

Fox's competition this year was formidable. Edward Asner picked up his 17th Emmy bid for an appearance on "CSI: NY." Asner already owns seven Emmys won across four categories. Oscar champ Ernest Borgnine ("Marty") was the 21st performer to nab a guest acting nod for an appearance on "ER."  Borgnine also lost his previous two Emmy bids (1963 lead actor, "McHale's Navy"; 1980 supporting actor movie/mini, "All Quiet on the Western Front »

All Male Cast To Recreate Classic Lines From Meryl Streep Films

On September 5, the bang. comedy theater in Los Angeles will feature Streeptease, a stage re-enactment of classic dialogue from the films of Meryl Streep. The caveat here is that it is performed by an all-male cast. Hmm..the love scenes from The Bridges of Madison County should be particularly interesting with a male actor speaking in an Italian accent expressing his love for Clint Eastwood, who isn't even there. Now if they can only induce Ernest Borgnine to star in our long-planned one-man tribute to Ethel Merman! For info click here »

Will Warners Saddle Up For A Wild Bunch Prequel ?

15 August 2009 9:52 AM, PDT | HollywoodNorthReport.com | See recent HollywoodNorthReport.com news »

Warners continues to mine popular studio properties for possible origin stories including a rumoured prequel to director Sam Peckinpah's 1969 feature The Wild Bunch, featuring the early robbing, whoring gang years of western outlaws 'Pike Bishop', 'Deke Thornton' and 'Freddie Sykes', when they "did their fair share of killing and more..." in the Old West. Premise of the original film, set in 1913, during the height of the Mexican Revolution, placed the aging gang of "unchanged men in a changing land", in 'San Rafael', Texas for a planned bank robbery, led by 'Pike Bishop' (William Holden), with 'Dutch Engstrom' (Ernest Borgnine), 'Lyle Gorch' (Warren Oates), 'Tector Gorch' (Ben Johnson), 'Angel' (Jaime Sanchez), 'Buck' (Rayford Barnes) and 'Crazy Lee' (Luke Hopkins), dressed as Us Cavalry, while a gaggle of bounty hunters led by railroad detective 'Patrick Harrigan' (Albert Dekker), former Bishop gang member 'Deke Thornton' (Robert Ryan), 'Coffer' (Strother Martin), 'T.C. »

Honoring Oscar-Winning Actor Ernest Borgnine: An Appreciation

28 July 2009 10:17 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – HollywoodChicago.com’s ace photographer, Joe Arce, recently photographed the Academy Award winning actor Ernest Borgnine at a book signing event in Chicago. The 92 year-old survivor was in excellent spirits, telling many rich anecdotes to the gathered crowd.

As a kid, I first came upon Ernie as the rascally Lt. Commander Quinton McHale in “McHale’s Navy” (1962-66), heavy in afternoon reruns at the time. I was surprised to see him re-appear in the cult disaster film “The Poseidon Adventure” (1972) as the loud and abrasive Mike Rogo, the cop that never believed Gene Hackman’s preacher-to-the-promised-land of rescue.

92 year-old Oscar winning actor Ernest Borgnine flashes his famous smile for the HollywoodChicago.com lens at the signing of his book ‘Ernie: The Autobiography’ on July 20, 2009 at Borders North Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

Movie Stars For Emmy

16 July 2009 9:54 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Since the EMMYs have 2,741 categories, we only focus on two things: first, how our favorite shows did and second, which big screen stars other than La Pfeiffer (she's always there with her television kingpin husband) will show up. Which of them got nominated for their small screen sojourns whether longform or more movie-like?

Speaking of which...

Drew Barrymore on the set of Going the Distance

Yes, you, Drew. But you knew she knew (everyone knew) that her affecting work in Grey Gardens as "Little Edie" was going to make the grade. "Big Edie" Jessica Lange also won a nomination for the narrative feature based on -- but also sort of jumping off from and commenting on -- the famous beloved documentary of the same name. I hope to have an interview with their director here soon.

Before we get to the rest of the big screen folks, here's the nominees »

Reed’s Bargain Bin: S1m0ne

6 July 2009 10:15 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. Despite the clever title and participation of Al Pacino, S1m0ne did not receive much attention from critics or movie theatre audiences when it came out in 2002. The director, Andrew Niccol, had some acclaim as a result of having directed Gattaca (a smart science fiction film about a physically defective human in a genetically manipulated world) and having written The Truman Show (a smart allegorical film about a man who's oblivious to the fact that his life has been manufactured for the purposes of a television show). S1m0ne also has a high concept idea behind it: a movie director creates a computer generated actor who becomes a star while only he knows that the actor is computer generated. I think I’ve had »

Michael Bay: The Exterminating Angel

25 June 2009 1:32 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

What is Michael Bay trying to say? We know he's an entertainer, first and foremost (or so he thinks). So if one asked him directly, he'd more than likely answer (I'm thinking arms akimbo): "I'm just here to blow your minds with these amazing transforming robots created by Hasbro, Ok?" Of course. Whether through his not-so-exciting, yet oddly watchable misfire of Pearl Harbor or the weirdly invigorating carnage and surprising cleverness of Bad Boys II, the man is the Ethel Merman of action movies -- the hostess with the mostest (and biggest budget) on the ball. And with Transformers 2 he's definitely in Ethel territory -- he wants to please everyone (Ernest Borgnine, you can step aside). But again, what the hell is this man trying to say? And furthermore, what is his aesthetic? While watching the second installment of Transformers (Transformers: Revenge... »

Five: Spaghetti Westerns not directed by Sergio Leone

10 June 2009 2:01 AM, PDT | Latemag.com/film | See recent LateFilmFull news »

Jeffman from Head Full Of Snow recommends five Spaghetti Westerns not directed by Sergio Leone.

A bruised and battered stalwart of the late night cinema circuit, the Spaghetti Western held a bastardised, custom-job revolver to the head of its inferior American cousin and relieved it of both its basic premise and last shred of decency; joyously blurring the line between right and wrong and leaving morality swinging from a ragged noose in the hot, desert sun.

The Spaghetti Western was an Italian phenomenon, mostly financed by Rome's famous Cinecitta Studios, although there were plenty of co-productions with other Euro countries like Spain and Germany, even stretching as far afield as Israel if you count the soul-sapping awfulness that is God's Gun. One man is responsible for popularising the Spaghetti Western, Sergio Leone. If you're a follower of LateMag's frequent forays into the weird and wonderful worlds of cult cinema you'll probably know his films already. »

Obscure Pa film to find: 1979's The Ravagers starring Richard Harris

9 June 2009 8:04 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

The Ravagers is another in a long line of Hollywood backed Pa films from the 70s that, despite sporting some pretty big names, just seems to have disappear off the face of the earth. That's right folks. No DVD. Nadda. There was a VHS copy released in England ages ago but other than that the film has become something of a Pa legend over the years and a real coveted item for collectors.

The quality of the film itself is up there with another of the era, Ultimate Warrior which, like The Ravagers, starred big names like Max Von Sydow and Yul Brenner. A little dated maybe, but still great fun. That film was recently releases on DVD as part of a double feature with Montgomery Tully's Battle Beneath the Earth so I still have hopes that we'll see The Ravagers hit home video one day.
