Karl Urban Joins Red, McMahon is VP

24 December 2009 12:09 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Mania reports that the busy Karl Urban (currently trying to take a bite out of Paul Bettany as the heavy in another comic book adaptation, “Priest”) has just added to his schedule by joining the cast of Bruce Willis’ comic book movie “Red”. Urban will play a character name Cooper. Meanwhile, Mania confirms that Julian McMahon will indeed be playing the Vice President of the United States. Likely, McMahon’s character is the weasel that begins the cycle of violence when he orders the hit on Bruce Willis’ character, Paul Moses, a former CIA black ops killer who has since retired. Robert Schwentke is directing the film, based on the comic book by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner. The cast is quite formidable, including Willis, Urban, McMahon, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Mary-Louise Parker, John C. Reilly, Brian Cox, Ernest Borgnine and Richard Dreyfuss. Release Date for Red Moved Up

"Super" star Bruce Willis' new comic book-inspired movie, Red (set to begin principal photography in January), has just had its release date moved up from November 19 to October 22. Summit Entertainment has not issued an explanation for the move. Typically, a release date change is made to avoid competition with other movies, but the new date has Red opening against Lionsgate's Saw VII and Warner's Prisoners.

Based on the three-issue, limited comic book series created by writer Warren Ellis and artist Cully Hamner, Red tells the story of a retired CIA Agent (Willis) targeted for assassination by the very agency he used to work for. When the agent realizes his life is forfeit, he goes "red" and decides to strike back.

Robert Schwentke (The Time Traveler's Wife) will direct from a script adapted by Erich and Jon Hoeber (Whiteout). The Red cast also boasts Academy Award-winning actors Morgan Freeman, »

Leonardo DiCaprio To Wear Viking Horns In Mel Gibson-Directed Drama

14 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Norse history is going to hit in a big way in 2011. First and foremost, there's "Thor," based on the Marvel comic inspired by Norse mythology. And if Wikipedia is correct (unlikely), there's a chance of a long-ago-rumored live-action "Hagar the Horrible" movie set for release that year. Finally, a drama about Vikings from director Mel Gibson and producer Graham King ("The Departed") is set to begin shooting next fall, meaning it will probably be in theaters at some time the following year.

According to Variety, Viking history enthusiast Leonardo DiCaprio will star in the untitled film, which is currently being scripted by William Monahan (both of whom also had a hand in "The Departed"). The plot has not been revealed, but we can presume this will be a bloody action epic, similar to Gibson's "Braveheart." Perhaps there will also be some sort of focus on the Christianization of Scandinavia during the Viking Age, »

Not Available on DVD: Oscar

9 December 2009 6:28 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

“You finally made it, Frankie! Oscar night! And here you sit, on top of a glass mountain called success. You’re one of the chosen five, and the whole town’s holding its breath to see who won it! It’s been quite a climb, hasn’t it, Frankie? Down at the bottom, scuffling for dimes in those smokers, all the way to the top. Magic Hollywood!” This ripe narration opens the 1966 movie The Oscar, a cynical look at how an Oscar nomination goes to the head of its nominee and the lengths an unscrupulous man will go to win the coveted gold statuette. With an undeserved reputation as one of the lousiest Show-biz soap operas from the 60’s, The Oscar portrays Hollywood as a cesspool where you sell your soul and it’s certainly amusing for its campy dialog and sleazy situations. Sure, The Oscar is brainless tinseltown trash full of shameless clichés, »

After Tron, The Black Hole

30 November 2009 10:55 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

With Tron Legacy still a year away from release it seems premature to be talking about what that team are planning next. And yet, here we are, with producer and director Sean Bailey and Joseph Kosinski set to plunder the Disney back catalogue once again, with a rejig of the nutso The Black Hole.A lasting psychological scar for anyone who saw it as a child when it was relatively new, The Black Hole was Disney's first film not to carry a U rating, which meant that characters could say "damn" and "hell", and that Anthony Perkins could have his insides minced by the whirling death blades of a giant crimson robot. The plot involves some space explorers (including Ernest Borgnine) stumbling upon Maximilian Schell, living alone at the edge of the titular void, on a ship with an army of faceless automatons. He claims his crew deserted him before »

Beyond Fulci:  An Interview with Catriona MacColl

Looking at Catriona MacColl, she’s every bit as beautiful today as she was 30 years ago in Lucio Fulci’s City Of The Living Dead.  Sitting down to speak with her at the 2009 Rock and Shock, I was happy to find her every bit as charming and eloquent as I’d hoped she’d be.  It’s still hard for me to believe that this very gracious Englishwoman is most beloved on these shores for her roles in a trilogy of the maestro’s ultra-violent zombie romps, three films I discovered she shied away from for many years.  Now, thanks to our mutual friend Mike Baronas, she’s on the convention circuit, meeting members of what she fondly refers to as the “Fulci cult.”

Thanks to Mike, Catriona and I sat down on a snowy Massachusetts day last month and discussed the MacColl/Fulci legacy, »
