Tim Burton Found His Alice in Wonderland

24 July 2008 4:50 AM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

I wish this bit of news was more interesting, but the report that Tim Burton has found an actor to star as Alice in his live-action adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic fantasy novel "Alice in Wonderland" is a bit dull considering the individual chosen is an unknown. Australian actress Mia Wasikowska is set to star as the tumbling little girl who will fall down the rabbit role for Burton's big budget project. Linda Woolverton (The Lion King) wrote the script and the film itself will be shot with live-action and performance-capture footage and presented in Disney Digital 3-D. There is no word on whether the story will remain true or altered for the screen. Filming begins in November.

Burton Finds His Alice

24 July 2008 1:34 AM, PDT | From DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news

Tim Burton’s search for a girl to put through the looking glass has finally come to an end. According to THR this morning, Australian actress Mia Wasikowska has been cast in Bureton’s re-telling of Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland.

How much horror appeal the adaptation will have is up in the air right now, but it is Burton and it is some twisted source material so something tells me we’ll be covering this one pretty closely. Alice in Wonderland will be a combination of live-action and performance-capture footage and will be, of course, Disney 3-D.

Shooting is expected to get underway in November; will be interesting to see what more cast are added between then and now.

Mia Wasikowska Cast as Alice in Tim Burton's Wonderland

23 July 2008 8:00 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

Back in November last year we announced that filmmaker Tim Burton would be working on two highly anticipated feature films: a full-length adaptation of Frankenweenie and Alice in Wonderland in 3D. Frankenweenie is nothing more than a stop-animation feature film, but Alice in Wonderland is some sort of combination of live-action and performance-capture CGI that will be presented fully in 3D. Burton and crew announced tonight that Australian actress Mia Wasikowska has been cast in the film as Alice. The script, obviously based on Lewis Carroll's classic novel, was penned by Disney writer Linda Woolverton (of Beauty and the Beast, Homeward Bound, and Lion King) and is being directed by Tim Burton himself. I was recently convinced that 3D, when implemented from the ground up, can be used in great ways. So taking Tim Burton's imaginative Wonderland and adding 3D filmmaking to it could only mean great things,

'The Dark Knight' Fastest Movie Ever to $200 Million

23 July 2008 4:11 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

The Dark Knight has broken two more Hollywood record, and they weren't even close. By earning $24 million on Monday and another $20 million Tuesday, according to Box Office Mojo, the Batman Begins sequel is by far the fastest movie to $200 million, beating the old record by three days. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest accomplished the feat in eight days back in 2006.

So The Dark Knight is now the fastest to $100 million and $200 million, and we're even going to upgrade the film's chances to break $300 million. We had been predicting 13 days, a full three days quicker than the current record held by Dead Man's Chest. Now, however, it appears likely that The Dark Knight will beat $300 million in ten days, eleven tops.

The second record to fall to Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, and Heath Ledger is the highest grossing movie in five days (it also holds the record for totals on opening day,

Feature: Gotham City, A Visual History

23 July 2008 12:00 PM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Matt Singer

Since 1940's "Batman" #4, and his first movie serial three years later, the Caped Crusader has called Gotham City his home. On screen and on the printed page, its visual representation has changed quite a bit over almost 70 years. At times, the look of the metropolis has been an afterthought; at others, directors have paid more attention to Gotham's appearance than to the characters living in it, and its latest appearance, in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight," may be its most unusual yet. (None the least for sparking a heated New York/Chicago debate.) Here's a look at eight movies full of gargoyles, dark alleys, and, yes, big naked statues.

Batman (1943)

Directed by Lambert Hillyer

Production Designer: Uncredited

This bargain basement production didn't even bother giving the Dynamic Duo a Batmobile, letting them make do with a generic black sedan, so it's no surprise Gotham is equally indistinct.

Miley Cyrus Wants Racy Nudie Role?

23 July 2008 5:09 AM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

I am sure there are some child actors that have made the transformation from child star to adult star with relative ease. However, none of them are coming to mind at the moment and I still have echoes of Christian Bale from The Dark Knight interviews telling me, "I would definitely try and convince anyone in my family and near to me not to do so at such a young age." He is referring to a role he played in Stephen Spielberg's Empire of the Sun at the age of 13. Well, at the age of 11 Miley Cyrus had a role in Tim Burton's Big Fish and by the age of 14 she was Hannah Montana. Since then she has posed in racy photos for Vanity Fair and been seen online in photos many consider unbecoming for a girl her age. She is now 15-years-old and it seems she may

Do We Need a Christopher Nolan Batman Trilogy?

22 July 2008 12:50 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

David Frank knows more than you. Care to disagree? Congratulations Christopher Nolan. You just delivered the best comic-book film ever. And creeping hell, it happens to be one of the all-time great sequels too. And did I mention it just shattered box-office records like a sledgehammer on a potato chip? What are you doing next.after going to Disney World of course? Oh yes, you might just attempt to break the dreaded comic-book film trilogy curse. Good luck mate, succeeding with that will make your accomplishments on The Dark Knight seem down-right pathetic. After witnessing the cholesterol reducing* genius of The Dark Knight this weekend, a weird thought struck me. Do we need a third entry in Nolan's Batman trilogy? Don't get me wrong, we all want to see one. But should Nolan (who's technically not signed on for a third film, but I'd be shocked if he passed) risk

Burton To Face Ex In Court

21 July 2008 7:01 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Moviemaker Tim Burton will face his former girlfriend Lisa Marie in court next month in a battle over assets she alleges he promised her during their relationship.

The actress claims the director, who has been dating Brit Helena Bonham-Carter since 2001, cheated her out of cash she's due based on an oral agreement.

Burton's lawyer, Joseph Mannis, had argued any such agreement between his client and his ex was not relevant, but Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Teresa Sanchez-Gordon disagreed on Friday and ruled a trial could go ahead.

The former couple will now meet in court on 11 August.

Fhm's Interview with Heath Ledger on Playing The Joker

18 July 2008 2:17 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

As audiences around the world are discovering today, the late Heath Ledger has taken the iconic Joker character in The Dark Knight to entirely new depths of emotion and complexity. Personally, I feel like he's bested Jack Nicholson's long-held title by far, but some might consider that apples to oranges (Tim Burton vs Christopher Nolan, after all). Either way, it's hard to argue that Ledger hasn't left us with one of the greatest screen villains in history. Despite the actor's passing, we can discover some of what went into portraying the dark clown thanks to Fhm. The magazine sat down with Ledger last year and here's some of what he had to say of the role he considered the "most fun [he's] had." "I just locked myself away and formed a little diary and experimented with voices... I ended up making him within the realm of a psychopath kind of

Movie Review - 'The Dark Knight'

17 July 2008 3:24 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

The Dark Knight

Starring Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, and Michael Caine

Directed by Christopher Nolan

Rated PG-13

The unvarnished truth is that The Dark Knight has more characters that it doesn't need than characters it needs, which means it has more scenes than it should, more storylines to conclude than we're all that interested in, and it all takes too long to get there. It has one of the silliest gadget gimmicks I've ever seen in a superhero movie, it has some third act problems, and for a while, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) appears to have a cameo in his own movie.

But The Dark Knight also has Heath Ledger as The Joker, which is not only reason enough to see the film but is also a justifiable excuse to fall in love with the movies all over again.

The sequel to 2005's Batman Begins opens with a bank heist,

List: Once more, from the top! Five comic book reboots

17 July 2008 2:36 PM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Matt Singer

When the "Batman" movie franchise had grown too swollen with campy performances and benippled costumes to survive, Warner Brothers went back to the drawing board. But they didn't just bring on a new director or actor to play Batman; they restarted the entire franchise. And if 2005's "Batman Begins," directed by Christopher Nolan, could have been written off as an elaborately reimagined prequel - since Tim Burton's 1989 "Batman" did not fully explain how Bruce Wayne became Batman or feature "Begins" villains the Scarecrow or Ra's Al Ghul - there could be no lingering doubt with Nolan's new Bat-follow-up, "The Dark Knight," where we get a totally new take on The Joker, courtesy of the late Heath Ledger.

Starting over a movie franchise based on a comic book from scratch is a fitting move; comic books have been doing the same thing for years. When these lumbering

Helena Bonham Carter Sought for 'Terminator Salvation' Villain

30 June 2008 4:53 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

There has been cautious optimism about the upcoming Terminator trilogy since it was announced that Christian Bale would play John Connor.

The cast has filled out rather nicely since then - funny how that works - although I still question whether McG is the right director. Then again, I said the same thing about Jonathon Mostow for T3, and that turned out better than I expected.

And now there's news that a new, more-than-reputable actor will join the ensemble that already includes Anton Yelchin, Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood, Common, and Bryce Dallas Howard. WENN is reporting that Helena Bonham Carter "has been offered a small but pivotal role" in the film.

Last year, Bonham Carter received a Golden Globe nomination for Sweeney Todd, and she already has an Oscar nomination for The Wings of the Dove back in 1997. She also has a good gauge for blockbusters and culturally relevant films,

New 'Terminator' Brings on a Little Tim Burton?

30 June 2008 1:46 AM, PDT | From bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news

It was announced this evening that Tim Burton fav Helena Bonham Carter (pictured inside) could soon be joining the battle between man and cyborg as the Oscar-nominated actress is in talks to board McG's Terminator Salvation, the fourth installment in the franchise kicked off by James Cameron in 1984. The roles in the new film have been kept under wraps, but insiders described the Bonham Carter role as small but pivotal. Principal photography on the Halcyon-produced movie, which looks at the origins of the battle between humans and Skynet, started last month in New Mexico, with the idea that most exteriors will be shot before a potential SAG strike. Warners is scheduled to release the action film May 22, 2009.

Helena is a Cyborg!

30 June 2008 12:30 AM, PDT | From DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news

I always knew there was something strange about Helena Bonham Carter, and now I’ve figured out what it is: She’s a cyborg created by Skynet to infiltrate our society and bring down humanity from the inside! Man, Tim Burton’s gonna be pissed.

Thr reports that Bonham Carter is in talks to play a “small but pivotal” role in McG’s Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the fourth film in the Terminator series that began shooting back in May. Right now they’re rushing to get all the exteriors done while the potential SAG strike is looming on the horizon. No more specifics were revealed about her potential part in the film, but we're keeping our ear canals clean and will drop more when we pick it up.

Film Critic: 'Ledger's Joker Is Oscar Worthy'

26 June 2008 6:36 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

One of America's most revered film critics has started championing Heath Ledger for a posthumous Oscar in his review of the tragic actor's final completed film.

In his critique of The Dark Knight, Rolling Stone's Peter Travers calls Ledger's portrayal of The Joker "mad-crazy-blazing brilliant." He goes on to write, "It's typical of Ledger's total commitment to films as diverse as Brokeback Mountain and I'm Not There that he does nothing out of vanity or the need to be liked.

"Ledger's Joker has no gray areas - he's all rampaging id. He creates a Joker for the ages."

Ledger, who died from an accidental drug overdose in January, takes on The Joker role which Jack Nicholson portrayed in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman film. The Dark Knight hits cinema screens next month.

And Travers in convinced Ledger is bound for Oscar gold: "If there's a movement to get him the first posthumous Oscar since Peter Finch won for 1976's Network, sign me up."
