2009 was a record year for Hollywood at the box office. According to the Nielson Co., total box-office receipts from the U.S. and Canada tallied more than $10.6 billion, which is approximately an 8 percent increase over 2008’s record of $9.791 billion. Not too shabby for a down economy.
The year’s slate included not only the usual surplus of sequels and adaptations (Transformers, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, etc.), but some Cinderella stories that defied all financial expectations (The Hangover, Paranormal Activity). However, while 2009 will certainly be remembered as lucrative year at the box office, it’s also the year that social media emerged as a make or break factor for box office success. »

Back in the summer, the always talkative creator of Spawn, Todd McFarlane, started talking up the Wizard of Oz sequel that has been sitting in Warner Bros.’ lap for years now. McFarlane was claiming that the film was going to be based on his ‘Twisted Land of Oz’ action figures – that is until A History of Violence screenwriter Josh Olson stepped up to set the record straight.
Olson had apparently been working on an Oz sequel called Oz: Return to the Emerald City, which Olson himself had conceived using some of the original Oz books by L. Frank Baum. We heard brief summaries of what the sequel might involve, but nothing really solid…until now.
The details of Olson’s script were snagged by Pajiba, with our friends at First Showing pointing them our way. Check out this synopsis for Return to the Emerald City:
The story centers on Dorothy Neil, »

So, what’s so original about another movie depicting Armageddon, the end of the world, the final battle between good and evil? Well, two things… first, this one appears to have actually been done right. If you’re gonna go and make a movie like this, you gotta go all out and really impress, no holds bars and hit hard. »

With 2010 only a few days old, there's a lot to look forward to in the coming year — and in many cases, a clean slate to begin tackling a new year's worth of projects, goals and various other plans.
That applies to the comic book industry as much as anywhere else, so I surveyed a wide range of creators in and around the comics scene to find out what has them most excited for 2010, and if they had any resolutions (comics-related or otherwise) for the coming year.
Their responses ranged from eager anticipation of buzz-friendly video games and movies to a distinct avoidance of anything with too much hype — so read on for the full breakdown of which projects and plans are foremost on creators' minds as we begin 2010.
MTV: Which comics, movies, games, music or any other types of projects arriving in 2010 are you looking forward to the most?
Aside from "Bioshock 2," I got nothing. »

As a consumer, it's always a pleasure to look down the road to a year filled with exciting films. 2010, no doubt, will be one of those years that holds a little something for everyone. Already, there are countless lists of film agendas lined up for various critics and festival-goers. This is my list. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part I Ah, Harry Potter. Who doesn't love this intense, visually epic series? While some (cough, Order of the Phoenix, cough) have been less than satisfying for fans of the books (myself being one of them), others have been extraordinary (Prisoner of Azkaban for one). With The Deathly Hallows, there is a lot to look forward to. This is one of the lengthier books in the series (thus the two-part film split), and it's also one of the more comprehensive. There were a lot of loose ends left throughout the books prior, »

If you watch two films in close proximity to one another, it’s pretty easy to tell which one you liked more. Watch three, and you can still tell pretty easily, but it’s more subject to change. Watch films on a regular basis for about a decade, and it becomes nearly impossible, not to mention pointless and kind of reductive to try and rank them in the way you would sports teams. If you’re in any way engaged with the world, your opinions and attitudes will change somewhat over that course of time, and to try and reduce that entire expanse of time into a trite little list is, well, why would you want to do it?
I’m not going to argue that these films are the absolute best of the decade (though I think that a case could be made for several of them, and I »

With the Library of Congress’ recent announcement of the 25 films being added to our National Film Registry for 2009, I was inspired to look back over some of the films that haven’t yet been included. In doing so, I noticed there are many films from my lifetime that deserve eventual recognition. The National Film Preservation Board selects up to 25 films each year to be included in the Registry, so I have selected 23 yet unselected films from my lifetime (one for each year) that I would like to nominate for 2010… in fact, I’ve actually submitted my list of nominations to the National Film Preservation Board, as they encourage the public to do. More info on this can be found at their website.
This list of 23 films spans my lifetime, which means they fall between my year of birth (1978) and the new cut-off year which is 10 years back (2000). This is Not »

Part 5: From Swords and sandals to Up in the air
Swords & Sandals
Move over robots, here comes the beefcake!
The tide has turned turned against robots and time travel in the blockbusters stakes. This summer's big movies involve medieval weaponry, mythical beasts, and beefcake straining against leather strapwork. Stepping into the sweaty Schwarzenegger-sized sandals are Avatar's Sam Worthington and Donnie Darko's Jake Gyllenhaal – the former battling Medusa, vengeful Greek gods and hopefully the Kraken in a remake of Clash Of The Titans, the latter flexing his new, gym-pumped physique against Ben Kingsley in lavish Disney fantasy The Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time. Curiously, Gemma Arterton stars in both. Elsewhere, Kevin Macdonald enters Gladiator territory with his Roman Britain epic The Eagle Of The Ninth (see "R" for Russell Crowe's return to the genre), Tarsem Singh is getting his Theseus pic Dawn Of War together, »
