A Christmas Carol Review

9 November 2009 12:59 AM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday story “A Christmas Carol” gets the 3D treatment, and the result is a visually stunning big-screen experience I’m sure many cinema goers out there will enjoy to the fullest extent. As far as I’m concerned, my feelings about this one are mixed.

The story doesn’t really require a lengthy introduction. The holiday season is in full swing, and Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) despises Christmas and everyone celebrating it. Then he’s visited by three ghosts who take him on an emotional journey, and before you know it, his meanness is gone for good…read more [ScreeningLog]

It’s hard to believe that Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol 166 years ago, but here we are in 2009 and Robert Zemeckis has spent $180 million to produce a motion-capture animated film that retells the famous story. The movie opens this weekend on more than 2,000 digital 3D screens and »

Caine: 'Being an actor lost me friends'

9 November 2009 12:50 AM, PST | Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Sir Michael Caine has revealed that his childhood friends dumped him when he started his acting career. The Harry Brown actor, who grew up in Elephant and Castle in London, said that his friends hated the fact that he became an actor because he was not rich enough to buy any drinks at their local pub. Caine told Esquire: "I was a broke, out-of-work actor, and I didn't have enough money to buy a round in the pub. So they stopped seeing me. Broke, out-of-work actors are very lonely people." The 76-year-old Oscar winner continued: "Not everyone's (more) »

Caine Struck Up Friendship With 'Larry' Olivier

9 November 2009 12:01 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Sir Michael Caine was left awestruck when his Sleuth co-star Lord Laurence Olivier banned him from addressing him by his official title.

The actor admits he was nervous before starring in the 1972 mystery alongside the revered Olivier, who was made a Lord just two years prior.

But Caine insists Olivier remained down-to-earth despite his prestigious status.

He recalls, "Before we started the movie, he sent me a letter - I think he was Lord Olivier then. He sent me a letter saying, 'It's just occurred to me that you may be wondering how to address me because I have this title. From the moment we shake hands for the first time, I will be Larry forever.' Which was nice, it's wonderful - but you think about the necessity to send that letter. You know, I'm Sir Michael Caine and I can't imagine when I started doing (the 2007 remake) Sleuth with Jude Law, sending him a letter saying, 'You may be wondering how to address me, you may call me Michael.' It's amazing."

And the 76 year old will always be grateful to Olivier, who passed away in 1989, for believing in his acting ability.

Caine adds, "We did a scene, Larry and I, basically I had the main part in it. He goes to shoot me and I burst into tears begging him not to kill me on the stairs in Sleuth. When the director said cut, he (Olivier) looked at me and said, 'I thought I had an assistant. I see I have a partner.' That was the greatest compliment ever paid to me as an actor. That was his thinking, because he was the greatest actor we had." »

Review: Harry Brown

8 November 2009 4:01 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Harry Brown is old. He lives in a tiny flat, on a run down estate. He eats jam on toast. He has a wife in the hospital, and he spends his days playing chess with his only friend in his local pub.

Harry Brown is scared. The estate where he lives is run by the out of control kids who live there. They deal drugs, are armed, and are prone to committing random acts of violence. Harry is so intimidated, when his wife takes a turn for the worse, he still takes the long way around the main road, because he doesn’t want to go down into the subway. His friend Len is also frightened, and is sick of it. He’s armed himself with an old bayonet, and is threatening to use it. Harry gets the news the next day. He has now lost everything, and despairs for the world around him. »

Sir Michael Caine's friends abandoned him when he became an actor. The 'Harry Brown' actor - now a multimillionaire - admitted his childhood pals were upset that his new career left him unable to buy any drinks at their local pub in London. When asked how his friends behaved towards him when he first started acting, he said: "It's the opposite of what you imagine: they blew me out at first. "I was a broke, out-of-work actor, and I didn't have enough money to buy a round in the pub. So they stopped seeing me. Broke, out-of-work actors are very lonely people." De Niro to the 7th? (Oscar's Male Hierarchy)

6 November 2009 3:46 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Have you been buying the minor huzz (hype+buzz) 'Robert De Niro's 7th Oscar nomination' for the holiday film Everybody's Fine? My friend txt critic saw it last night and sent the following note by phone...

it's, well, fine. most definitely a drama (despite the trailer) and conceptually a cross between About Schmidt and Four Christmases. nice, sweet and somewhat forgettable.

might, Might be a nomination for DeNiro, but i wouldn't bet on it.I dunno. I wasn't betting on it either but Best Actor sure seems vacant this year with only Colin Firth (A Single Man) and George Clooney (Up in the Air) catching any sort of real fire. As I've been saying for months, Fox Searchlight shouldn't have even hesitated to position Crazy Heart for a 2009 release. Jeff Bridges would have a clear shot at the career trophy given the field (if -- and it's always »

Caine Dispenses Relationship Advice

5 November 2009 4:11 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Sir Michael Caine is doling out relationship advice to a new generation of Lotharios, telling flirtatious Little Britain star David Walliams to give up his flings and concentrate on finding a wife.

The Alfie star dated a number of glamorous actresses and models during his prime, including Bianca Jagger and Jill St. John, before tying the knot with wife Shakira.

And now he's urged ladies' man Walliams to do the same, insisting he'll never be satisfied with his love life until he learns to devote himself to one woman.

Walliams says, "Michael Caine said to me, 'I used to be like you. I used to think with women, it was about quantity. Then I realised it was about quality. Then I met my beautiful wife Shakira.'

"I know people reading this won't believe it, but people like myself have low self-esteem. That's why we feel the need to date loads of girls. Then you realise it's not going to get you anywhere. Michael Caine said to me, 'I realised that I couldn't sleep with every woman in the world.' He was sharing a flat with Terence Stamp in the Sixties. It must have been a very, very exciting time to be young and famous." »

Michael Caine hopes for an Oscar for Harry Brown

Michael Caine hopes he performance in 'Harry Brown' is worthy of a Best Actor Oscar.

The veteran British actor - who has twice won Oscars for Best  Supporting Actor, in 1986 and 1989 - said he gave his absolute best performance in the film, and said if it's not worth an Oscar, he'll never top it.

He said: "There was one very difficult scene when the police tell me my friend has died. I'm completely straight-faced, then the moment they leave I burst into tears.

"That's very difficult to do, and when I finished that take I told the director, 'You've got to use that' He asked why. I said 'Because that's the best I can do. I'm not saying it's the best anyone can do; it's the best I can do.' "

Caine Shunned Drugs

3 November 2009 11:01 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Veteran actor Sir Michael Caine was turned off drugs for life - after a puff on a marijuana joint sparked a five-hour giggling fit.

The Get Carter star tried smoking pot in his youth but was concerned its effects on the memory would cause him to forget his acting lines.

And when he finally took the plunge, he laughed for hours - but later vowed to steer clear of narcotics and stick to alcohol to help him unwind.

He says, "Marijuana seemed like the most innocent of drugs, but I wanted to read about it first - I'm one of those guys - so I did and it said something terrifying to me: it affects your memory. I thought, 'I can't do it because I'll forget my lines.'

"Then one day I did smoke a marijuana cigarette and I started to laugh, and I laughed for five hours. I nearly got a hernia, so I thought 'Sod that' and I never got started on drugs at all. I drank a lot of alcohol - that was my drug. I was never an alcoholic, but I could get drunk every now and again. You can get bombed on English beer very easily." »

Caine Almost Died In Korean War

3 November 2009 8:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Veteran British actor Sir Michael Caine is still haunted by his experiences in the Korean War - insisting his life totally changed on the day he narrowly escaped death on the battlefield.

The Get Carter star was called up for national service in the British Army when he was aged 18 and was deployed to South Korea to help in the aftermath of the North Korean invasion.

Caine, who served as part of the Royal Fusiliers, admits he came close to losing his life during the conflict.

He says, "I was nearly killed. There were four of us on patrol in a valley in the middle of the rice paddies. The Chinese were closing in on us and the officer said, 'Let's run towards their line - they won't expect it because they'll be expecting us to run away towards our lines.' So we did that and we ended up going right around them. They couldn't find us because they were looking in the wrong place and we got away. But we'd faced that moment that we thought was the end.

"That night we went back to our bunkers and celebrated with a beer. We were just happy to be alive... I faced a moment when I knew I was going to die and I didn't run, I wasn't a coward, and it affected me deeply. I was at peace with myself and that's guided my life, not just in terms of whether someone's going to kill me, but in everything." »

Teen Caine Attacked With Bottle

2 November 2009 11:21 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Sir Michael Caine bears the scars of his rough upbringing - he was attacked with a glass bottle by a thug when he was a teenager.

The Get Carter star returned to some of London's most troubled neighbourhoods for his role in new movie Harry Brown, in which he plays a widower who avenges the death of a pal.

And Caine still remembers his time growing up in the U.K. capital - because he's got a scar on the back of his head from a vicious, unprovoked attack.

He says, "I remember once when I was 16, someone hit me over the head with a bottle. I didn't know he was behind me and I've still got the scar." »

Young Caine Victim Of Neglect

2 November 2009 11:21 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Sir Michael Caine was a victim of neglect when he was just six years old.

The Get Carter star was evacuated from London during World War II in the late 1930s, and was sent to live in Berkshire, England, along with another boy.

The woman who was paid to take care of the pair made them live in squalor, and Caine recalls being covered in painful sores as a result.

He was rescued by his mother Ellen who sensed something was wrong - but the mercy mission almost ended in disaster when she punched her son's carer.

The actor says, "I was locked in a dark cupboard under the stairs while they went out. My mum came to get me - she had a sixth sense that something was wrong - and she whacked (hit) the woman, just hit her in the face.

"Someone called the police and she nearly went to prison. My mother was like a boxer and she was really tough. She was hysterical when she saw the pair of us, because we were covered in sores." »

Review: Harry Brown, the British Gran Torino?

2 November 2009 8:53 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Some critics have already labelled this modern-day fable of Michael Caine's elderly avenging angel as the British Gran Torino. Undoubtedly there are superficial similarities; Eastwood and Caine are both unwitting relics in an increasingly isolated and unfamiliar environment, forced by circumstance to lash out at the society that has alienated them in the only way they know how. To label Harry Brown simply as a Gran Torino from across the Atlantic would be to distract from the sheer brutality on stage here. Before, Eastwood shocked through implication. Here, no punches are pulled. Harry Brown is unashamedly Caine's baby, as is made evident by his presence in virtually every frame. A national treasure in almost every sense of the word, even his most acclaimed performances have nonetheless been tinged by an unwanted comedic element, that much-imitated cockney charm that has so often put him at the risk of self-parody. Not here. »
