I’ll be up front with you: the list you’re about to read wasn’t what I had in store for you. As I sat at my desk and prepared to crank out what would be another top ten list of 2009, I realized that I was utterly ill-equipped to do so. As many great films as I witnessed this year, I missed just as many that I’m sure I’d enjoy: A Serious Man. The Fantastic Mr. Fox. The Hurt Locker. The Brothers Bloom.
I know. Just thinking about it makes me sick. But I saw enough to be confident in saying that 2009 was an extremely good year for movies — from blockbusters to indie pictures, we’ve witnessed some great films and surprising debuts from unique filmmakers.
What follows isn’t a list of the “best” films of 2009, but instead is a list of the most surprising, excellent »

The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Turned to dust and painful memories. My advice to you this coming New Year? »

Captain Eo is to return to Disneyland parks in February 2010. According to Rolling Stone, the popular 3D movie starring Michael Jackson, which screened for audiences at the height of the King Of Pop's popularity, will open to Disney patrons again for a limited run as a tribute to the fallen popstar. The 17-minute film was directed by The Godfather's Francis Ford Coppola and co-written by Star Wars mastermind (more) »

I was recently approached by horrorcore rapper/producer/promoter That Dude Jasper, who politely pointed out that the new Mr. Rage album Underground Cuts may well be worth a listen, and even possibly a review. So, being the fanatic I am, I grabbed the album, I checked it out, and I'll be damned if Jasper wasn't spot on in his recommendation.
Underground Cuts fuses the rapid fire (aka 'crunk') beats the dirty south has made so famous with an array of volatile lyrics. Mr. Rage's vocals are fantastic as he rides a balanced line between his natural voice and the raspiness so often associated with the horrorcore/wicked shit sub genre; the man is wise in not overdoing it. On the lyrical end, content is pretty cut and dried, don't look too deep for monumental rhymes, just open your ears and you'll catch a simplistic darkness that sparks visions of horror cinema old and new. »

Robert Duvall has been acting in and most recently producing films for more than 40 years. During this time he has starred in classics such as "The Godfather," "The Godfather: II," and "Tender Mercies." This weekend his latest film "Crazy Heart," which he co-stars in and produced, opens in theaters across the country.
MakingOf recently sat down with Duvall to learn more about his role in casting the film and what it was like on-set with first time director Scott Cooper. During the interview, he reveals that the set was very relaxed and shares that "a good director will allow you to improvise." He goes on to compare the atmosphere while filming to "The Godfather" because director Francis Ford Coppola would want to see what each actor would bring to their character.
Duvall also discusses how he initially reached out to »

Michael Jackson is back. Ok, stay with me here: In February 2010, the “Honey I Shrunk The Audience” attraction at Disneyland in southern California is out. Taking back its place is a 17-minute “3-D musical motion picture space adventure” starring the “King of Pop” Michael Jackson, who performs two songs: “We Are Here to Change The World” and “Another Part of Me.” The movie was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and produced by George Lucas.
The 3-D experience is called Captain Eo, and it originally played at Epcot and Disneyland starting in 1986 until closing around 1998. Captain Eo cost about a million dollars to make per minute, and was at the time the most expensive motion picture ever.
The short film was about Captain Eo (Jackson) and his crew traveling towards a bitter queen who lived in a cold dark world. (who was played by Anjelica Huston). In the original presentation, lasers, »

>> Quentin thinks ahead
Trash is thrilled to announce that Quentin Tarantino will receive the Dilys Powell award from the London Film Critics' Circle. Named after the revered former Sunday Times critic, "The Dilys" rewards excellence in cinema and, as the Circle celebrates the 30th anniversary of its awards ceremonies, I can't think of a more energising recipient than Tarantino whose continuing engagement with film history and criticism is being acknowledged (he even had a daredevil British film critic character – played by Michael Fassbender – in Inglourious Basterds). To disclose full interest, I am the current chairman wof the Critics' Circle Film section and when I proposed the Dilys to Tarantino, he was honoured to accept. "I hadn't really heard of Dilys Powell," he admits, "but I've now got two of her books of essays and am devouring them, trying to think what she would have made of my movies. I get »

Disney Parks Official Blog has confirmed that Captain Eo will return to Disneyland in Anaheim for a limited engagement this February. The very popular attraction, which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by George Lucas, ran from 1986 until 1997. The movie tells the story of Captain Eo and the ragtag crew of his spaceship on a mission to deliver a gift to a wicked alien queen, the Supreme Leader, on her home world of rotting, twisted metal and steaming vents. Captain Eo's alien crew consists of his small flying sidekick Fuzzbucket, the double-headed navigator and pilot Idee and Odee, robotic security officer Major Domo, a small robot Minor Domo (who fits like a module into Major Domo), and the clumsy elephant-like shipmate Hooter who always manages to blunder the crew's missions. How long the film will run has not yet been confirmed, but it may stick around for »

Disney's hoping that it's been sitting on a goldmine. Seeing as how This Is It exceeded expectations at the global box office and Michael Jackson is back to artistic-hero status after his image spent years in decline, the Mouse House is bringing the 3-D film Captain Eo, starring Jackson as a thriller of an intergalactic commander, back into its theme park fold for a limited engagement in February. The cutting-edge song-and-dance spectacle, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, produced by George Lucas and costarring Angelica Huston as the Witch Queen, premiered at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., in 1986 and became a key attraction in Tomorrowlands around the world. In need of a little news to brighten up your Friday? Disney has announced plans to return the Michael Jackson-starring, Francis Ford Coppola-directed short film Captain Eo to Disneyland, beginning in February 2010. Can its primitive 3D compete with an audience that will already have experienced Avatar's high water mark? That I can only answer with two high-pitched words: "Hee hee!" [DisneyParks] »

Disney Parks has confirmed that Honey I Shrunk The Audience will be closing sometime in the next few weeks to make way for the the return of the Francis Ford Coppola-directed/George Lucas-produced Michael Jackson sci-fi action 3D musical short film Captain Eo. The original film will return to Disneyland's Tomorrowland beginning in February 2010. Rumors that the attraction would return to the Southern California theme park hit the web in September, but were quickly denied by the mouse house. Bob Iger admitted at the time that Disney was considering the possibility but that "It's the kind of thing that, if we did it, would get a fair amount of attention and we'd want to make sure we do it right." Many people took the comment as meaning that Disney wanted to update the attraction in ways to appeal to today's audiences. The 17-minute film cost a record $17 million »

Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. I have seen nearly every Christmas movie ever made, but there was one I couldn't wait to see that kept eluding me: Silent Night, Deadly Night III: Better Watch Out! (1989). Why, you're wondering, would I waste my time on this crappy, sub-par horror series whose only claim to fame was irritating a group of parents back in the 1980s? Because this third part of a five-film series was the "comeback" feature for one of the greatest American directors of the 1960s and 1970s. Finally, Lionsgate has released the film on DVD for the first time, in a three-disc box set, no less, that also contains Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation (1990) and Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker (1991, starring Mickey Rooney!). I finally got to see it. But more on that later.
Like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Jonathan Demme and others, Monte Hellman (born 1932) started working for Roger Corman. »

Demi Moore exits a Ferrari Enzo in 2003's Charlie's Angels II: Full Throttle. The Aughties (ugh) were an incredible decade for film—if you like superheroes and comic books, romances based on 19th Century fiction, the apocalypse, brah-com, or fragmented narratives of disparate people crashing into each other. Personally, I hate most of this shit. But if you’re into the kind of stellar goodbad films that I admire, and you happen to like cars, you’re in luck, because what we have here is a gorgeous slide show of the best vehicles in the bestworst movies of the 2000s. Brett Berk writes Stick Shift, Vf.com's gay car blog. Visit him at brettberk.com 2000 Bring it On, Jeep Grand Wagoneer. The decade got kicked off right with this genius cheerleading movie, a proto-Glee that features a rag-tag bunch of losers united in a love of choreography and personal harmony. »

Godard's Breathless is the film that made me want to become a filmmaker. I saw it my freshman year in college and I couldn't believe how a director could take a few great characters and a mostly hand-held camera and make a film that said so much about life in a world in which absolute values had become irrelevant (both filmically and ethically.) And what a face Belmondo had! - Have you ever wondered what are the films that inspire the next generation of filmmakers? As part of our monthly Ioncinephile profile (read here), we ask the filmmaker the incredibly arduous task of identifying their top ten list of all time favorite films. This month we profile Tao Ruspoli, helmer behind Fix which ropens November 20th at the Village East in NY. He gave us his top ten (as of November 2009). 8 1/2 (1963) Federico Fellini I'm sure this film has been on this list 100 times, »
