Top-10 most anticipated film scores of 2010

31 December 2009 12:13 AM, PST | MovieScore Magazine | See recent MovieScore Magazine news »

The season of looking back – and forward – is here again. About a year ago, I wrote an article (published at upcomingfilmscores.com) about the most anticipated scores that were about to see the light of day in 2009 – James Horner’s Avatar was, of course, the number one on the list, and other scores on the list were Michael Giacchino’s Star Trek, Christopher Young’s Creation and Danny Elfman’s Terminator: »

All Time Low set for Alice in Wonderland soundtrack

22 December 2009 4:48 AM, PST | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Next year’s much anticipated Alice in Wonderland looks set to be vintage Tim Burton. Not only is the mad-haired director reuniting with long-time onscreen stars Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter (their seventh film together) and real-life partner, Helena Bonham Carter (their sixth), but also a whole host of offscreen favourites including costume designer Colleen Atwood, editor Chris Lebenzon, producer Richard D. Zanuck and composer Danny Elfman. But while the latter will undoubtedly add the quirky, whimsical music we’ve come to expect from Burton efforts, there’s one addition to the soundtrack that’s far from expected – pop punk band, All Time Low. »

12 Bands That Should Score a Film

10 December 2009 11:08 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

It's nothing new for a band to pick up the baton and write the scoring for a film. Even Danny Elfman was doing his thing with Oingo Boingo at the start of his film career. But the cultural trend seems all the more conspicuous these days with Karen O doing music for Where the Wild Things Are, Arcade Fire scoring The Box and Alexi Murdoch adding the tunes behind Burt and Verona's journey in Away We Go. So it got me thinking. What bands would I love to see cross over into the world of film, taking a shot at elevating the visuals instead of being front and center on an iPod? And, yes, I realize that some of the entries here aren't "bands," but you're smart. You know what I'm talking about. More importantly, you're probably already day-dreaming about which musicians you'd love to hear alongside some great dialog and camera work. But »

'The Wolfman' Gets R-Rating

9 December 2009 12:46 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Universal Pictures has announced that their movie "The Wolfman" has got an R-rating from Motion Picture Association of America. The movie, which is going to be released around the Valentine's Day in 2010, is rated R for "bloody horror, violence and gore."

Despite the negative financial consequences that can go along with it, the studio seems happy with the R-rating. This is possible considering the fact that the latest news is not as bad as several problems happened to the film along the way, like delays, reshoots, composers Danny Elfman's leave, and editing changes.

A remake of the 1941 classic of the same name, "The Wolfman" is following Talbot who is lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. He finds out that a nightmarish beast has been terrorizing the town but while investigating, Talbot discovers a horrifying destiny for himself.

The Wolfman Gets Bloody R-Rating

8 December 2009 5:10 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

After numerous delays, reshoots, editing changes after multiple test screenings, and of course - Danny Elfman's infamous departure, I wasn't sure The Wolfman would actually be completed for the planned February 12th 2010 release. Well, it appears that a final cut is in hand. Universal just informed me that The Wolfman has finally received a rating from the MPAA, and has been rated 'R' for "bloody horror, violence and gore." I've never recieved an e-mail from a studio publicist bragging about a film's MPAA rating before, nevermind a bloody R-rating. I would assume that Universal wants everyone to know that they have decided to go with the longer, bloodier, more violent (and from what I've heard, better) cut of the film. If Universal is happy with the film, I would expect them to start screening it to the public pretty soon, possibly even this week, to spark word of mouth interest. »

Two New International Posters for Joe Johnston's The Wolfman

25 November 2009 2:10 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

The legend is alive. Two new posters for Joe Johnston's The Wolfman have popped up online today, the first one from Kino Gallery (via Styd) and the second one from SalonDelMal. It looks like Universal is just throwing out posters for this movie left and right in hopes of covering up all the problems they've had with it. Not only has it been test screen terribly, but Danny Elfman was replaced recently as well. These posters aren't terrible, I'm just not impressed by a marketing campaign that involves putting out as many random posters around the world as possible. Plus, the design on these is a bit sloppy and could be better. Oh well. Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman, is lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Upon his return and after being reunited with his estranged father, Talbot is bitten and cursed by a werewolf. »

Blu-ray review: Terminator Salvation Director's Cut

23 November 2009 4:51 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Previous Terminator films saw killer robots travel back in time to obliterate any human threat to a grim future ruled by machines.

In Terminator Salvation, out on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK today (Monday, November 23), we finally see that nightmarish future.

This fourth adventure in the franchise is an action-packed, post-apocalyptic war film set in 2018, in the wastelands that remain after supercomputer Skynet becomes self-aware and decides to reduce civilisation to cinders in a nuclear strike known as Judgment Day.

Terminator Salvation is both a prequel and a sequel, showing the future events prior to the time-travel missions that took place in the previous movies. So how does it shape up on Blu-ray?

Resistance fighter John Connor (Christian Bale, with a rasping voice) is seen by some survivors as a saviour and by others as a false prophet. He uncovers a research facility detailing plans to create an advanced »

Will Danny Elfman Return For 'Spider-Man 4'?

23 November 2009 12:23 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Composer Danny Elfman has provided the distinctive musical theme for Tim Burton's "Batman" films as well as a host of other television and movie projects, so when we caught up with him at the red carpet preview of Burton's new exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, we had to ask: will he be returning to the Spidey movie team when "Spider-Man 4" comes around?

"Who knows?" smiled Elfman, who re-teamed with director Sam Raimi to compose 2007's "Spider-Man 3" theme.

"Only the great gods of the movie world could answer that question," he laughed. "Imagine a chess game, [with] the Greek gods moving us around — that's how it is in the movie world. Somebody's moving me about from one square to another, but I have no idea what square I'm headed to next."

'The Wolfman' Becomes a Franken-Movie?

23 November 2009 10:03 AM, PST | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

Is The Wolfman actually Frankenstein in disguise? Well, it's obviously not about a mad scientist's assembled monster - yet, if the movie is the creature and the studio is Dr. Frank, then you tell me what that equals? According to a new article over at Variety, Mirisch Agency has booked editors Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch to recut Joe Johnston's The Wolfman reboot for Universal Pictures. For years now Bloody Disgusting has been hearing about the woes surrounding the hairy remake that is finally arriving in theaters February 12 (a Valentine's Day massacre anyone?). With the pic being re-edited just months before release, and news of recent reshoots and rescoring (Danny Elfman's score is to be replaced by composer Paul Halsinger's take), it's hard not to think we have a Franken-movie on our hands. Instead of moaning, he'll be howling in disappointment. »

Two New Editors for Universal's Wolf Man

18 November 2009 10:34 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Universal's upcoming The Wolfman re-imagining has been bogged down for the past three years by countless production setbacks, constantly changing release dates, a new director, and most recently the loss of their composer Danny Elfman. What else could happen with Wolfman that hasn't already happened? They could bring in two new editors, that's what. The relentless news excavators over at /film dug up this news out of the gutter of a Variety article not even about the movie. It looks like Mark Goldblatt, action editor extraordinaire, and Walter Murch, the man who literally wrote the book on editing, will come on to Joe Johnston's movie and try to clean it up a bit. A Goldblatt/Murch pairing is certainly an interesting one, with Goldblatt working such action pieces as Armageddon, Bad Boys 1 & 2, and both Terminator films, and Murch handling slightly more dramatic pieces like Cold Mountain and The English Patient. »

French Wolfman poster

The posters for The Wolfman have been very dark and classy. I know the last posters included a look at the wolf's face and Emily Blunt in a corset, but this one is my favorite so far. The image is of the cane that Larry Talbot (Benicio Del Toro) carries in the film. It scares me how much I really want to see this. Recently, Danny Elfman backed out of doing the score, which kind of sucks. A lot of people say that Elfman's music is redundant, but I think he's a badass. It's also easy to »

Elfman Replaced On "The Wolfman"

14 November 2009 11:49 AM, PST | www.ohmygore.com/ | See recent OhMyGore news »

Famed "Batman", "Spider-man", "Men In Black" and "Wanted" composer Danny Elfman has been given the boot from the upcoming big budget "The Wolfman" remake according to Cinemusic.net and The Playlist. What's strange is Elfman had apparently already written an entire score for the new horror movie said to be similar to Wojciech Kilar's haunting work in "Bram Stocker's Dracula", however the film's constantly shifting release dates mean that Elfman simply doesn't have the time to stay with the project and finish his work. Instead, Paul Haslinger ("Underworld", "Shoot 'Em Up") has been brought onboard to do the film's soundtrack and no doubt give it a more grungy, rock-based sound. In a strange bit of similitude, Haslinger was a member of Tangerine Dream - the influential 80's electronic »

Most Adorable Commercial Ever? Tim Burton's MoMA Spot

12 November 2009 12:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Some might say it's too early to have a career retrospective for Tim Burton, which the Museum of Modern Art in NYC will be hosting from November 22, 2009 to April 26, 2010, but I say, "Bring it on!" The more Tim, the better. And naturally, the commercial promoting this must-see exhibition is directed by Burton and scored by his longtime collaborator Danny Elfman.

The exhibition will include Burton's sketches, films, a book signing, and a special film series called "Tim Burton and the Lurid Beauty of Monsters" "that have influenced, inspired, and intrigued Burton, and which reflect the motifs, themes, and sensibilities of his work."

For more info on the exhibit, go to the official MoMa website. Meanwhile, you can check out the commercial after the jump, or read some previous goodies on Mr. Burton, like this gallery of Tim Burton art, an interview with him at Comic-Con, and the extended trailer for Alice in Wonderland. »

The band, who are currently touring with Rob Thomas, will release it across United States on November 17.

In advance of the album, bassist Brent Kutzle exclusively told AceShowbiz what they have to offer in the forthcoming release. From talking about the album, he also revealed about submitting one of the album's songs for Timbaland's new album "Shock Value 2". The band's collaboration with Leona Lewis, their duet wish list and who, among the five members of the band, tweets the most are also addressed by Brent.

First, the Benicio Del Toro-starrer was supposed to be released Feb. 13 of this year, then was moved to April 3, and then Nov. 6. Finally, the film is supposed to howl into theaters Feb. 12 of next year. (See "What? "The Wolfman" Moved Again? See What Else Universal is Changing")

Danny Elfman Out as 'The Wolfman' Grabs a New Composer

10 November 2009 11:18 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

By Brian Salisbury

As if a massively disappointing delay in release date wasn't bad enough, the upcoming Wolfman remake has suffered yet another setback. Dread Central, by way of Cinemusic, is reporting that legendary film composer Danny Elfman is off the project and Paul Haslinger will be taking his place. Technically the word is that "scheduling conflicts" are to blame, but if you buy that nonsense I have a case of werewolf repellent I would love to sell to you. The film opens in February and I am honestly supposed to believe that Elfman plumb forgot he had a previous engagement? Or that he wouldn't be in the final stages of putting the music together anyway? The damn thing was supposed to come out this week. No, this reeks of studio politics and publicity malarkey.

Elfman No Longer Composing the 'Wolfman' Score

10 November 2009 1:17 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I'll probably receive a host of contrary comments on this, but I've never reaaly gotten the whole Danny Elfman fascination. His signature scores don't strike me as sounding all that different, and the ones that feel more like mortgage payments - Wanted and Notorious in the past 18 months, for example - sure don't stand out all that often. Nacho Libre, anyone?

My own feelings aside, how in the world do you pick anyone but Elfman to score The Wolfman? Again, go back to those signature scores Elfman has composed, and this thing seems tailor made for his gothic symphonies.

Well, he was working on the score, but with the film's delayed post-production, there are now scheduling conflicts keeping Elfman out of the project, according to CineMusic. But just as you hire Randy Newman for jaunty cartoon scores (with whimsical original songs), you should always fit your dark monster movie into Elfman's schedule. »
