In Did You Hear About the Morgans?, Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker are supposed to pass for a married couple, but they have all the chemistry of two actors who just met and shook hands moments before the cameras rolled. They don’t even seem to like each other much — I’m fairly certain I saw Parker’s nostrils flaring in one scene — which poses a bit of a problem for a movie that hinges on their characters working out their differences and living happily ever after…read more [Miami Herald]
This is a familiar set-up, used in hundreds of movies to best isolate the comedic potential of the standard fish-out-of-water scenario, but Lawrence doesn’t play the lead characters as bumbling nitwits forced to learn hayseed lessons. No, Paul and Meryl are the liberal, elitist surrogates for the audience. They know things about nutrition and animal cruelty, about style and »

Director: Marc Lawrence Writer: Marc Lawrence Starring: Hugh Grant, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sam Elliott, Mary Steenburgen, Elisabeth Moss, Michael Kelly, Wilford Brimley, Jesse Liebman If you find cultural stereotypes to be offensive, I have some advice – stay far away from the horrendously titled Did You Hear About the Morgans? I am not sure who to be more offended for – the rural gun-toting Republicans of Wyoming (who are not too dissimilar to the media’s representation of Palinites) or the urban liberals of New York City – as both exist in Did You Hear About the Morgans? as mere caricatures. Did You Hear About the Morgans? follows Paul (Hugh Grant) and Meryl Morgan (Sarah Jessica Parker) as they hide out in west bumble-fuck Wyoming while participating in a witness protection program for a murder that they witnessed in New York City. Oh, and I forgot the most important part, Paul and Meryl »

The players: Director: Marc Lawrence, Writer: Marc Lawrence, Cast: Hugh Grant, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sam Elliott, Mary Steenburgen
Facts of interest: Lawrence also directed "Music and Lyrics."
The plot: A New York couple is forced to enter a witness protection program and relocate to Wyoming after witnessing a cold-blooded murder.
Our thoughts: Marc Lawrence’s new romantic comedy “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” is the epitome of ultra-boring, completely unnecessary cinema. It’s a movie in which nothing really works and the actors don’t seem to have a clue about what they’re doing. Alas, it turns out this one may just as well be among the most disappointing films of 2009. »

As if opening against Avatar weren't bad enough, Did You Hear About the Morgans? starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Hugh Grant, Mary Steenburgen and Sam Elliott, is receiving one of the worst critical receptions of the year. "The world would be a happier place if we'd never heard about the Morgans," Claudia Puig concludes in USA Today. Joe Neumaier in the New York Daily News writes that the film's "loping pace, inconsistent tone and lack of imagination are all deadly." How deadly? Mick Lasalle in the San Francisco Chronicle writes. "Sometimes it's unpleasant, sometimes it's insincere, and for long stretches it's boring." Carrie Rickey in the Philadelphia Inquirer calls it a "mirth-free comedy." And Wesley Morris in the Boston Globe comments: "Most bad comedies plod from scene to scene. This one plods from sentence to sentence." »

Directed by: Jason Reitman
Cast: George Clooney, Anna Kendrick, Vera Farmiga, Jason Bateman, Danny McBride
Running Time: 2 hrs 10 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: December 18, 2009
Plot: Ryan (Clooney) is a man with the unenviable task of flying across the country to fire people … only he loves it. A new young worker bee (Kendrick) comes along and introduces technology that may make him irrelevant. Now Ryan must reexamine this life to see what his future holds.
Who’S It For? Adult comedy drama. This film speaks to the millions of college educated people out there who are being downsized, but also to those who think alone is better.
Expectations: I’ll admit it. With Reitman already having directed Thank You For Smoking and Juno … I was thinking this could be the greatest start a director has ever known.

Did You Hear About The Morgans? tells the story of a married couple (played by Parker and Grant) who incidentally witness a mob hit one evening and are subsequently forced into the witness protection program. The problem is that the two have been separated for quite some time, due to Mr. Morgan’s one-time infidelity. Thus, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan, two people who can barely stand to be in the same room with each other, are forced to relocate from isolating themselves from each other in the big city to the utter isolation of small town living.

The author Philip Pullman has expressed his disappointment that the second two novels in his fantasy trilogy have not yet made it to the big screen
The author Philip Pullman has spoken of his disappointment over the failure of Hollywood to complete the film trilogy of his series of fantasy novels, His Dark Materials.
The actor Sam Elliott, who starred in the 2007 adaptation of the first novel, Northern Lights (the film was called The Golden Compass), said earlier this week that books two and three were not being filmed due to a successful campaign by America's religious right. The Golden Compass grossed more than £230m around the world, but was less successful in America, where the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights called for a boycott on the grounds that Pullman's books introduced children to atheism.
Pullman, 63, told the Western Mail: "If Sam is right then I am very »

American actor Sam Elliott has accused the Roman Catholic Church of scaring Hollywood producers into shelving the two planned sequels to hit movie The Golden Compass.
The film, which starred Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, was the first of author Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials fantasy trilogy to be adapted for the big screen.
Two further films based on Pullman's novels - The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass - were due to be made following the box office success of 2007's The Golden Compass - but plans were stalled last year, seemingly as a result of the downturn in the economy.
But Elliott is convinced the real reason is down to opposition from church leaders, who he claims put indirect pressure on officials at studio New Line to pull the planned sequels.
He tells Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper, "The Catholic church happened to The Golden Compass, as far as I'm concerned.
"It did incredible at the box office, taking $380 million. Incredible. It took $85 million in the States.
"The Catholic Church... lambasted them and I think it scared New Line off."
Bill Donohue, of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, led the mission, calling on parents to boycott the film for attempting to "introduce Christian children to the wonders of atheism in a backdoor fashion at Christmas time." And he's delighted his move seems to have worked: "I knew if we could hurt the box office receipts here, it might put the brakes on the next movie." »

George Clooney is bringing it home in his new film, Up In The Air (2009). The comedy/drama, directed by Jason Reitman, who also co-wrote the screenplay, explores a very human side of today's economic crisis. The film revolves around Clooney's character, Ryan Bingham, a professional ax-man who flies around the country firing corporate employees. There are three things that Ryan Bingham loves: his life on the road, his position as a hired job assassin, and his frequent flyer miles. A confirmed bachelor who prides himself in not needing anyone or anything, Ryan gives motivational speeches on the merits of a relationship-free life, and pursues the goal of collecting ten million frequent flyer miles. As he reaches the cusp of his goal, he's grounded at the home office in Omaha, Nebraska, due to downsizing in his own company, shortly after meeting a female perpetual traveller, Alex Goran (Vera Farmiga) much like himself. »

Chicago – Director Jason Reitman is becoming like a fine wine. He’s maturing with age, tasting newer with each sip and leaving an aftertaste that makes you think you’ll savor what’s next.
And in his new romantic dramedy “Up in the Air,” he has managed to pour a likely Oscar contender on the unusual subject matter of flyover country and layoffs all while continuing to display his directorial range. He again uses some of his usual casting suspects (i.e. J.K. Simmons returns for a trifecta with Reitman after both “Juno” and “Thank You for Smoking” and Jason Bateman’s now on a double after “Juno”).
Rating: 4.0/5.0

The former Smiths guitarist is to compose the music for a movie starring Antonio Banderas and Snoop Dogg. Don't hold your breath for a Morrissey cameo though ...
Johnny Marr will compose the score to a forthcoming film starring Antonio Banderas and Snoop Dogg. The former Smiths guitarist has been asked to write original music for The Big Bang, a detective film by director Tony Krantz.
"This will be Johnny's first film score and he was just ranked the number one greatest guitarist of all time by Virgin Media," producer Reece Pearson told MovieScore magazine. But while Marr is celebrated for his riffs, he is a relatively unknown when it comes to soundtracks. However, he has already announced a partnership with Ian Brown to score three television dramas, but it is unclear when these programmes will air.
The Big Bang is the story of a private detective, played by Banderas, as »

Now that December is upon us, you can expect to hear about a lot of new releases you probably won't be able to see right away, unless you happen to live in a major market. Unfortunately, this is how it goes with films vying for year-end awards notice. Some of these hopeful contenders will show up at your multiplex around Christmas, when the marquee will be filled with so many new releases your head is likely to spin. Others will expand in January, and still others won't go wide until the Oscar nominations are announced on February 2. Meanwhile, we'll continue to see some titles released that don't have the benefit of an Oscar campaign and some that don't have the qualifying status to warrant such promotion.
This week's unLimited features a sure-thing Oscar contender, a dark comedy unlikely to be considered for any honors and a documentary that isn't qualified »

Cinematical has just received six exclusive new images from Did You Hear About the Morgans?, starring Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker as a New York Couple on the verge of divorce who witness a murder and, in an attempt to salvage their marriage (and save their lives), they join the witness protection program. But that's when things really get interesting, because the program sends our uptight, urban city dwellers all the way to the backwoods of Wyoming -- where the loud, obnoxious sounds of the city are replaced by the soft, calming sounds of nature. Will that be enough to save the marriage, though?
Sam Elliott, Mary Steenburgen and Elisabeth Moss also star in this comedy directed by Marc Lawrence (Forces of Nature, Miss Congeniality), who last worked with Grant on the charming Music and Lyrics. Will Grant's pairing with Sarah Jessica Parker work just as well as »
