The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

7 hours ago | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

Top Ten Greatest Beards in Horror History

21 December 2009 7:45 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

You know what really makes a man? A beard. Beards have been featured in films throughout the history of cinema, some great, some good, and some not so great or good. But over the years a few beards have stood the test of time and deserve a little attention. So without further ado ...

The Buz presents:

The Top Ten List Of The Greatest Beards In Horror History

10: Laurence Fishburne as Max in A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3: Dream Warriors

Max had one of those beards that just looked like it belonged there. It was a part of his face. While it wasn’t the fullest or longest beard, it makes an impression. And if I’m not mistaken, it’s the only film in which Larry Fishburne had a beard, making it both unique and stylish. Let us hope he brings it back soon.

Tim Sullivan: A Christmas Treat

21 December 2009 5:00 AM, PST | Bad Lit | See recent Bad Lit news »

‘Tis the season to start feeling jolly, so here’s an old holiday short film from horror maestro Tim Sullivan, A Christmas Treat. In fact, this is Sullivan’s first short film directed back when he was an Nyu student back in the ’80s. It’s a really well done short with a nice, slow set-up and a terrific punchline. It reminds me a lot of the old Tales From the Darkside TV show, which would have been a contemporary at the time this was produced.

I don’t think I’ve written about Tim Sullivan on Bad Lit before, but he’s one helluva nice guy and a wonderful horror movie director. There are two films by him you need to check out if you haven’t already. The first is 2001 Maniacs, an updating of the Herschell Gordon Lewis splatter classic that stars the legendary Robert Englund and the wonderfully quirky Giuseppe Andrews, »

Ari Lehman's Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei Journal

14 December 2009 2:50 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Much as we'd like to, we can't always get to Every festival that happens. That's why we have friends like Ari Lehman, who travels extensively and who can bring us a blow-by-blow of the events as they happened. Here, then, is Ari's exclusive journal from his recent trip to Spain, where his band, First Jason, played the Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei, which is a really long name for one hell of a festival dedicated to horror movies and music. So without further ado...

Firstjason Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei Journal

Day 1 -

As we looked out of the airplane window, Barcelona lay sprawled out before us like an overflowing Pirate's chest that had been tipped into the shiny blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. I looked up to the north where I saw a dark, craggy mountaintop looming in the distance. »

Robert Englund Turns on His Web Cam 3D

14 December 2009 12:51 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Can you imagine Freddy himself reaching off the screen and clawing you to death? That was attempted with "varying" degrees of success with Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, but in the latest film from Spanish filmmaker Antoni Sole entitled Web Cam 3D, Robert Englund will be getting another shot at the whole three-dimensional thing, sans the character of Freddy of course.

Screen Daily reports that Robert Englund, Michael Madsen, Junio Valverde, Amaia Salamanca, and Estella Warren are set to star in this latest horror feature, which tells the tale of a man who invites a group of teens to a party to film their exploits inside a house via web cams. Viewers are then asked to vote on who should die and who should live.

Familiar ground, we know, but the really good stuff lately has been coming from Spanish directors. Let's hope that trend continues here.

'Web Cam 3-D' - Your Vote Determines Who Dies

14 December 2009 11:33 AM, PST | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

One might think that it's a little late in the game for a reality based horror flick in which users determine who dies based off of a web stream, but if Barcelona-based director and producer Antoni Sole has any say, we'll all be shortly digging into his 3-D horror flick Web Cam set to star Robert Englund and Michael Madsen. According to Screen Daily: The film will be a co-production between Sole's own outfit Abs Film Company, Canada's Caramel Film and Media Pro in Romania, where the film is set to shoot next year at the Media Pro studios. Based on a script by Sole and Davis and Ivan Serra, Web Cam tells the story of a man who lures a group of high school kids to a party, films them using »

Thomas Haden Church Starring in New FearNet Web/On-Demand Series, Zombie Roadkill

13 December 2009 11:40 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Before his career-changing turn in Sideways, most people knew Thomas Haden Church as a television actor on Wings, and Ned and Stacy. He's not returning to television quite yet, but he is working on something in a series format.  Haden Church is starring in a new FearNet web/on-demand series, Zombie Roadkill. He'll play "a park ranger who partners with a teen (David Dorfman) to escape a portion of highway where roadkill is resurrected as flesh-eating zombie animals." Don't get too excited though --- the series will only last six episodes, each of which will be four to five minutes each. The series will be written by Henry Gayden and directed by David Green. FearNet is no stranger to short series, having released  30 Days of Night: Blood Trails and Dust to Dust. Their latest series is Fear Clinic with Robert Englund. It doesn't sound like this series will be anything too complicated, »

A.J. Bowen and Tom Holland Join Cast of Hatchet 2

8 December 2009 11:16 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Two more names have been added to the cast of Adam Green's sequel to his original bloodbath, Hatchet 2 and we couldn't be happier!

Shock Till You Drop learned exclusively today that both J Bowen (The Signal, The House Of The Devil) and Tom Holland (the director of Fright Night) are the latest additions to the cast of the production which begins shooting early January.

Bowen will be playing Layton a hunter who Green tells Shock, "is part of a group that Reverend Zombie (Tony Todd) hires to go into the swamp to kill Victor Crowley."

Tom Holland will play Marybeth's Uncle Bob, the brother of Robert Englund's character from the first film and one of the lead roles of Hatchet 2. "Fright Night is a big influence on me," says Green. "And from conversations I've had with Tom about that movie, he clearly gets how to make humor work with horror. »

Weekend of Horrors Moves Forward Without Fangoria

5 December 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors event. I've been going since I was a wee lad. In fact, unknown to me, many friends I have now are those who attended the same shows I went to in the early '90s. It's a shame this convention is moving forward without the magazine I grew up on (and later contributed to). That's right. It's now "Creation Entertainment's Weekend of Horrors," indicating that Fangoria and its partner on the convention circuit have parted ways. Super bummer. Fango recently held a show in Vegas that didn't include Creation so I guess this was coming. Right now, Creation has the L.A. WoH set for May 21-23, 2010 at the Marriott near Lax. And the two guests they've got locked in? Dario Argento and Robert Englund. That's a good double-whammy to lead with. »

Danielle Harris Vs Victor Crowley in Hatchet 2

4 December 2009 10:33 AM, PST | HorrorYearbook | See recent HorrorYearbook news »

Rob Zombie may be the best thing that ever happened to Danielle Harris! Harris' (who played "Jamie Lloyd" in Halloween 4 & 5) career has really taken off since Zombie casted her in his remake in 2007. She is currently starring in Fear Clinic with Robert Englund and it has just been announced that she will be going head-to-head with Kane Hodder in Hatchet 2. She will be taking over the role originated by Tamara Feldman in the first film, but what I really want to know is if her breasts will also be making an appearance! Harris did show off her Ta-Tas in Rob Zombie's Halloween, so Adam Green would be a fool not to feature her nude again! We will keep you updated! »

Exclusive: Robert Englund in V the New TV Series?

25 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Whilst getting my Robert Englund autobiography signed by the great man himself on Wednesday evening, I did what I had to do whilst wearing my HeyUGuys Badge, I asked a few probing movie/TV related questions in the short couple of minutes I was with him.

I asked Robert if he was going to be making a cameo appearance in the new Nightmare on Elm Street remake, possibly as a victim.

He said he wasn’t, which is a shame as the thought of the original Krueger possibly being a victim of the new Krueger would have been a nice send off for Robert Englund’s contribution to the franchise.

I asked Robert about any other projects he had lined up and he interestingly said that there is a possibility he will be making an appearance in the new ‘V’ TV series which has just started to huge ratings.

Book Review: Robert Englund Hollywood Monster

25 November 2009 9:00 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

After I watched 29 horror films and wrote my Halloween articles on Freddy Krueger, Jason Vorhees and Michael Myers for the site, I found a new love for the horror genre and the characters it created and one of those characters recently came knocking on my door, or the postman did, to deliver a review copy of ‘Hollywood Monster: A Walk Down Elm Street with the Man of Your Dreams’, the autobiography of Freddy Krueger’s character creator Robert Englund, and I was thrilled.

Not only did I get the book to review I was also lucky to meet Robert Englund himself as he was in London for a signing at Waterstones in Piccadilly Circus and it pretty much made my day after being so heavily immersed in his movies for Halloween and he was a genuine down to earth movie star and an absolute legend.

Freddy Kruger’s New Look Revealed Through Hard Plastic

25 November 2009 10:58 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

There has to be a Top 10 list devoted to this idea some day of a character’s look being kept under wraps by a studio only to have it blown by either a toy company, a newspaper, or a video game.  I remember in ‘98 when our first glimpse of the Us version of Godzilla came from a black and white, grainy shot in USA Today.  Now, thanks to the toy company Neca, and to Shock Till You Drop who brought it to our attention, we have our first, full-on look at Freddy Krueger’s new facial features.

Check it out right here:

Prior beliefs that the only, real difference between this Freddy and the classic Freddy is in the look of the face are confirmed here.  This new look isn’t as over the top as Robert Englund’s look, and, to be honest, it’s a little more frightening. »

The Best View Of The New Freddy Krueger Yet

24 November 2009 9:28 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Ever since Jackie Earle Haley was cast as Freddy Krueger over Robert Englund in Platinum Dunes' remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, fans have been clamoring for a clear look at the sweater-ed menace. Up until now, people have tried to brighten the first image of the character, and freeze frame the teaser trailer, but what we have now the best view so far of the character. Unfortunately, it comes in action figure form. Found on the Figures.com message board, the photo is of the figure made by the National Entertainment Collectibles Association, which makes some of the most detailed figures on the market, and displays Freddy with bloody claws and all. The most noticeable difference is that this version seems to have a lot more skin on his face than Englund's Freddy. You could almost say it looks like someone took a lighter to a Ken doll. »
