Matthew Modine: Better Angels
By
Matthew Modine has been something of an iconoclast most of his working life. After being groomed for ‘80s teen idol status in early films such as Private School and Vision Quest, Modine was also one of the first actors of his generation, along with Sean Penn, to take on riskier projects, such as Robert Altman's Streamers, Alan Parker’s Birdy, Gillian Armstrong’s Mrs. Soffel, and Alan J. Pakula’s Orphans. It was his lead role as the cynical Marine Private Joker in Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam epic Full Metal Jacket that put Modine into the pantheon of young actors who were more than just pretty faces and knowing winks at the camera. This, after all, was the young man who turned down the lead in Top Gun, arguably the prototypical ‘80s blockbuster, due to its cold war politics. From the beginning, »

If nothing else, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning should help quell the frequent complaint that major-studio horror films wimp out when it comes to graphic violence and uncompromising cruelty. Just this year alone, Hostel, the Hills Have Eyes remake, the upcoming Turistas and (perhaps most of all) this latest Chainsaw entry have been unafraid and unapologetic about subjecting audiences and onscreen victims to severe levels of savagery and bloodshed.
As for originality in the majors’ contributions to the genre, well…that’s another matter. Yet The Beginning is about as good as one could expect a prequel to a remake of a classic to be; it’s a seriously intended and sometimes quite disturbing film whose greatest liability just might »

Those who were able to get out to the theaters over the past week to catch Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D got a glimpse of the brand new trailer for the third installment of the franchise Toy Story 3. The trailer is now online, and it may have just been worth the 11 year wait.
The film picks up years after 1999’s Toy Story 2. Andy has grown up, and is now heading off to college. He realizes he won’t be able to bring his beloved toys with him, so he’s forced to sell them to the highest bidder. It just so happens that the bidder is a local day care with unruly kids.
The toys decide to rebel and attempt an escape in what looks to be a great revisiting of the beloved characters. Though Jim Varney has passed way, everybody else is back for the ride this time, »

The full theatrical trailer for the highly anticipated Toy Story 3 hit last week to (mostly) high praise of its loveable familiarity and beautiful animation (when is that ever Not the case with Pixar?). Today we have some info on some fresh voices that have been added to the Toy Story 3 roster, as well as news that the current re-release of Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D is being expanded.
First up, the voice casting:
Toy Story 3 director, Lee Unkrich, let fans know via his Twitter account (a continually growing place to go for breaking entertainment news announcements - a la Screen Rant) and a video announcement that Flight of the Conchords comedienne, Kristen Schaal and Blake Clark (50 First Dates) will be joining Toy Story 3’s voice cast.
Although Unkrich was tight-lipped about which character Schaal will be voicing (I’m going to guessing some sort of quirky, perhaps »

Willard - Fangoria Archives: Originally Published 2/28/03
Willard is, of course, a remake of the 1971 cult classic, but it belongs equally to a just slightly older tradition—’60s movies like What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? and Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte, which mixed grande dames with Grand Guignol to turn horror into high Gothic melodrama. Everything in Willard is heightened or exaggerated to some degree, but writer/director Glen Morgan never allows it tip over into camp, combining enough intentional humor with serious squirm-inducing moments to make it a scary/funny good time.
The not-so-secret weapon that holds it all together is Crispin Glover, who is so absolutely right for the title role that it’s astonishing to learn that the studio wanted anyone else. »

The legendary actor talks about his new History Channel reality show
R. Lee Ermey made his big break with his towering performance in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket and he's made a career of portraying colorful characters since then. These days, Ermey is venturing into the world of reality TV with his new show, Lock N' Load, which is currently airing on Friday nights at 9 Pm Et on the History Channel. Ermey recently participated on a conference call to promote his new series, and here's what he had to say.
You know, the show obviously it's fun to watch you use these weapons and blow stuff up, but beyond that I mean it's genuinely interesting. Can you sort of talk about the historic values that come along with the show?
R. Lee Ermey: Well, that's the objective is to give a history of different type of weapons, like we »

Things that go boom in the night, splatter in the day and all kinds of manly fun will be the focus of a new History channel series. Especially for those of is who felt the best part of Stanley Kubrick's 1987 film, "Full Metal Jacket," was the performance of R. Lee Ermey, a real U.S. Marine drill instructor that Kubrick found for his gritty Vietnam tale. The History Channel launches "Lock N' Load with R. Lee Ermey" Friday night July 31 at 9 p.m. Former Us Marine Corps Drill Instructor R. Lee Ermey was originally hired as a consultant for the Marine Corps boot camp portion of the film. It was his taped demonstration where he yelled »

Anyone else finding him or herself a little too excited for the premiere of the new History show Lock N' Load with R. Lee Ermey (July 31, 9 p.m. Et)? The U.S. Marine Corp Gunnery Sergeant, former drill instructor, Vietnam veteran and actor will get "hands-on with some of the world's fiercest firearms, including machine guns, tanks, pistols and rockets." High-speed photography will allegedly give us an unprecedented look at the inner workings of the weapons and what really happens at the point of impact. The closest I have -- or ever will -- come to holding a gun is kicking ass at Time Crisis II, but the promise of this show is making me feel the kind of pumped I haven't experienced since applauding at the end of 2008's Rambo. Who's with me? »
