This Week on Stage: Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury star in 'A Little Night Music'

19 December 2009 6:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

In the past week, two new shows have opened in New York City: A Little Night Music, a musical revival starring Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta-Jones (at left), and The Orphans Home Cycle, Part 2 -- The Story of a Marriage. EW reviewers enjoyed both of them. Thom Geier gave A Little Night Music a B+ and said that star Zeta-Jones comfortably commanded the stage "as if it were just another red carpet to be conquered." Meanwhile, Melissa Rose Bernardo also gave The Orphans Home Cycle, Part 2 -- The Story of a Marriage a B+ and made the powerful proclamation that »

Sorority Row DVD Finally Gets a Release Date

17 December 2009 4:52 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

We got some news today that's sure to make one of our loyal readers, fceurich39, ecstatic: Stewart Hendler's Sorority Row remake is finally hitting DVD on February 23, 2010.

That date came courtesy of Video Eta (thanks to Joey Monda for the heads-up) and is subject to further verification, but we'll take it for now. No artwork or special features are available yet so keep it here for more as it comes.

Sorority Row (review here), starring Briana Evigan, Audrina Patridge, Rumer Willis, Carrie Fisher, Jamie Chung, Julian Morris, and Margo Harshman, tells the story of a group of sorority girls who inadvertently cause the murder of one of their sisters in a prank gone wrong. They agree to keep the matter to themselves and never speak of it again so they can get on with their lives. This proves easier said than done, when after graduation a mysterious killer goes »

17 December 2009 4:02 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Debbie Reynolds surprised fans watching her daughter Carrie Fisher's Broadway play on Tuesday - by jumping on stage to sing a duet with the star.

The Star Wars actress took her one-woman show, Wishful Drinking, about coming of age in Hollywood, to the New York stage in October.

And the star's mum, whose career and marriages are mocked during the performance, was secretly watching in the audience - until she revealed her presence by joining Fisher for a rendition of Happy Days during the finale. »

Sundance Selects Keeps the Devil Away from 'White Lightnin'

12 December 2009 6:25 PM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Ask me what the most ambitious films are of the year, and so far I might point you to Dominic Murphy’s White Lightnin’ - a crazy piece of filmmaking that merits a "genre" label of its own. The pic was a recent winner Hitchcock D’Or at the Dinard Film Festival and grabbed the headlines less than 48 hours ago for winning big at the Mumbai Film Festival. Screen Daily reports that Sundance Selects won't leave this small in stature film orphaned in the backwoods for much longer. - Ask me what the most ambitious films are of the year, and so far I might point you to Dominic Murphy’s White Lightnin’ - a crazy piece of filmmaking that merits a "genre" label of its own. This Week on Stage: Mamet's 'Race' and 'So Help Me God' open

12 December 2009 6:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

The past week saw the opening of two new shows in New York City. The first is a new play from David Mamet, Race, which EW critic Lisa Schwarzbaum awarded a C grade and called "a four-person dramatic tap dance about the lies blacks and whites tell each other about each other." The other—without a doubt, much lighter fare—is a lost backstage play called So Help Me God starring Kristen Johnston that EW's Jessica Shaw gave a B, commenting that "Johnston seems to relish every second" of her time on stage, "strutting around the stage in diva-worthy capes and lacy gowns, »

Reviews From A Parallel Universe: David Lynch’s Return of the Jedi

10 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Continuing our pioneering look at movies from reality’s underside, Hug once again connects to her sister site in a parallel universe to bring you the kind of lowdown that would never make it to a hard copy publication on quality control grounds.

It’s a place where Western Culture has evolved to allow women to walk around bare breasted, where each and every human impulse is catered for in safe booths; there are ones for masturbation, suicide and the consumption of Dan Brown’s novels and in which film history reads differently. To our eyes it would look like the inane etchings of a bored and socially dysfunctional film journalist. You’re invented to be more thorough in your analysis.

In our reality the Star Wars series was dealt a fatal blow by its own creator with the interminable photo-chemical faecal matter known to some as The Phantom Menace »

What are the best TV ads of the noughties?

1 December 2009 3:53 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Let us know the TV commercials that have stood out for you over the past decade

Looking back at the TV adverts of the past decade, it's difficult not to be struck by the creativity on show. Rather than the movie-influenced blockbuster ads of the 90s, much of the industry turned to quirky conceptual ideas. Advertisers also exploited the growing power of the web – not only did successful campaigns make their mark on TV, they also went viral.

Some relied on special effects, some relied on exhaustive preparation by art teams – but some of the best were just a clever idea, simply executed. Who would have guessed that a man in a gorilla suit playing the drums would have been one of the most talked-about ads of the decade?

Below are some of our favourite ads of the noughties – let us know what you think we've missed out.

Grant Helped Fisher With Acid Problem

27 November 2009 5:26 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Carrie Fisher's actress mother Debbie Reynolds called in celebrity pal Cary Grant to counsel the star about her drug addiction when she was a troubled teen.

The 53-year-old Star Wars actress has publicly disclosed her acid use and addiction to prescription medication in her new memoir Wishful Drinking, and Fisher admits she was stunned to receive a worried phone call from Grant, who she discovered once used Lsd under a doctor's supervision.

She explains, "My mother was worried I was doing too much Lsd... She did what any concerned mother would do - she had Cary Grant call me about my acid problem."

Still baffled by Grant's experience, she laughs, "I just always want to imagine, was he in a backless gown? Was the doctor on acid? Did they do it in the office? How do you do acid with a doctor?" »

This week Jane Andrews, Katie Price, Terry Herbert and Fred Johnson

Prison break

Jane Andrews

You know all those jokes about open prisons? Turns out they're all true. You can just walk out. Even if you're serving the final stretch of a 12-year prison sentence for murder.

Andrews, former personal assistant to the Duchess of York, became a guest of Her Majesty (insert lightly ironical joke here) when she killed her lover Thomas Cressman after he refused to marry her. She went on the run for three days before being arrested by police at a Premier Inn near the prison in Kent. They had been hot on her trail ever since they were called by a taxi driver who had recognised her. It looks like minicabs have just become the fourth emergency service.

Fisher Finds Ex Simon's Songs 'Trippy'

27 November 2009 11:01 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Carrie Fisher is baffled by her ex-husband Paul Simon's songs about their failed marriage - insisting it's "trippy" to hear the rocker complain about what went wrong.

The Star Wars actress, who was married to the rocker for less than a year before they split in 1984, is referenced in a string of songs he recorded during their tumultuous union - including Hearts and Bones, Graceland, She Moves On and Allergies.

Decades later Fisher admits she still struggles to understand his bizarre musical interpretations of their union.

She says, "It is kind of trippy 15, 20 years down the line to turn on the radio and hear yourself complained about in song."

Reciting lyrics from Allergies, she laughs, "(He says), 'My heart is allergic to the women I love and it's changing the shape of my face...' Is that flattering?" »

This Week on Stage: 'Fela!' rocks, Matthew Broderick disappoints

Former American Idol contestant Syesha Mercado may be the biggest known name in the revival of Dreamgirls that kicked off its national tour at Harlem's famed Apollo Theatre this week, but it's an unknown named Moya Angela who's generating all the buzz as Effie "I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" White, according to EW's Tanner Stransky. Also this week, the booty-shaking biographical Afrobeat musical Fela! (pictured at left) opened on Broadway to widespread raves (including a B+ from EW), while a fine cast headed by a lifeless Matthew Broderick struggled in director/playwright Kenneth Lonergan's disappointing new Off Broadway comic drama, »

Carrie Fisher: Cary Grant Helped Me With My Teenage Acid Problem

25 November 2009 6:44 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

When Carrie Fisher's mom got worried about her teenage daughter's Lsd use, she did what any concerned parent might do. "She had Cary Grant call me about my acid problem," Fisher told David Letterman on his show Tuesday night. "While I was shooting it and stuff. I tell my father the story and my father's a little vague having shot speed 13 years. It's a family tradition." Grant's involvement with Fisher's drug problem didn't end there. Fisher's dad ending up seeing him at Grace Kelly's funeral and at a loss for what to say, asked him to call his daughter again. He did. The reason Grant was the family acid expert? He once did it under doctor's supervision. "I just always want to imagine, was he in a backless gown?" said Fisher. "Was the doctor on acid? Did they do »

Interview: Debbie Reynolds Dishes on Her Lucky Star Career

23 November 2009 9:04 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Debbie Reynolds, who began her movie star journey as a teenager during another show biz era, made her big splash in 1952’s “Singin’ in the Rain.” What followed was a long and varied career as a singer, dancer and respected film actress.

Born Mary Frances Reynolds in El Paso, Texas, she lucked into her career by winning a beauty contest, which included a contract with Warner Brothers. Making her debut in “June Bride,” she also scored a charted hit with the song “Aba Daba Honeymoon.”

Following her big break in Singin’ in the Rain, she worked steadily for the next several decades in film, stage and Las Vegas revue. Notable films include “Tammy,” The Tender Trap,” “The Catered Affair,” “How the West was Won,” “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” “Charlotte’s Web” and “Mother.”

Besides her long run in the movies, Reynolds is prominent as the mother of “Star Wars »

This Week on Stage: 'Ragtime,' 'Equivocation' in L.A., and vibrators!

21 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

It was a busy week on the boards. Sunday saw the opening of a Broadway revival of the musical Ragtime (pictured right), which EW's Melissa Rose Bernardo calls "dazzling" and gives an A. Also on Broadway, Sarah Ruhl's provocatively titled comic play In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play opened to a decidedly lukewarm review from yours truly: "Ruhl's play could have benefited from a broader, farcical touch." Elsewhere on Broadway, the Julia Stiles-Bill Pullman revival of David Mamet's Oleanna announced plans to close on Jan. 3. Off Broadway, we raved about both Alan Ayckbourn's My »

'New Moon' Reactions, Oprah And Birthdays For Larry King And P. Diddy In Today's Twitter-Wood

20 November 2009 4:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Oprah's announcement that her show may end its 25-season run in 2011 was almost enough to unseat "New Moon" as the top trending topic of the Twitter-Wood feed today. Kevin Nealon and Wil Wheaton both had a opinions on her possible bow out of syndication, while Eli Roth and Kevin Smith helped keep "Twilight" alive in Twitter conversation.

Two big names celebrated birthdays last night in very public fashion, as P. Diddy entertained a few folks on my follow list and Larry King got a little rowdy in my pick for Twitter Pic of the Day. Check that out after the jump along with Jeremy Piven's Calgary Flames trip and Danny DeVito's wholesome moment with Carrie Fisher. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter-Wood report for November 20, 2009.

[DVD Review] Kevin Smith 3-Movie Collection

16 November 2009 4:00 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

This isn’t the first time a set titled the “[insert name] collection” has debuted with a less than stellar compilation of films attempting to represent a filmmaker or actor’s career. What Miramax did right here was calling it a “3-Movie Collection” thus letting themselves off the hook for not having some of Kevin Smith’s better films. The set includes Clerks, Chasing Amy and Jay and Silent Strike Back which means the collection might not all be the crème de la crème de Smith, but it certainly lets you see a wide range of the man’s talents as a director. However, I think the best way to think of this set is as a sign of his career financially and not necessarily professionally.

With Clerks, Kevin Smith operated on a shoestring budget and cast his friends in the leads after deciding he didn’t have the chops to handle »
