Monsters Vs. Aliens: James Cameron's Love/Hate Relationship with Technology

29 December 2009 8:52 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

[Major spoilers ahead for "Avatar" and other James Cameron films.]

Like all of James Cameron's six previous films, "Avatar" is a war of worlds both literal and figurative. Colonists from the planet Earth do battle with the native inhabitants of a moon named Pandora over the right to mine a rare and powerful mineral. Cameron casts the struggle as a conflict between the technological world (the humans and their advanced military) and the natural world (the natives, known as the Na'vi, who share a symbiotic relationship with their environment). Given that the humans are characterized as greedy and violent while the Na'vi are portrayed as caring and spiritual, it isn't particularly surprising that the movie ultimately treats the Na'vi as the heroes and the humans as villains. But it's a little curious when you consider that this condemnation of industrialization appears in a film made using some of the most cutting-edge moviemaking technology ever devised by man. »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

29 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

Photos: Peter Weir’s The Way Back

23 December 2009 5:00 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Peter Weir’s second film of the 21st century follows his bombastic nautical epic Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World and is based on the true story of a band of prisoners escaping a Siberian labour camp in 1940.

The collected stills from The Way Back epitomise all that is great about Weir’s cinematic vision; the desperate and the desolate in an uneasy harmony as the journeys taken are of unrelenting discovery.

The always excellent Mark Strong is joined by Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, Jim Sturgess and, fresh from Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, Saoirse Ronan in front of the camera and Weir has been fortunate to draw together a talented cast, and his beautiful cinematography is in evidence below.

The images are available below, and come to us from Quiet Earth.

The Way Back will be released sometime in 2010. »

Peter Weir Finds The Way Back to Cinema With WWII Film

23 December 2009 2:03 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Peter Weir hasn’t made a film since Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World in 2003, and after six years of wondering in the wilderness, he has finally unveiled pictures of his newest film, The Way Back, which is based on a memoir from Slavomir Rawicz about seven multi-national prisoners who escape from a Siberian camp in 1940 and trek thousands of miles across hostile terrain to India. It stars Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Jim Sturgess, Saoirse Ronan, and Mark Strong. The pictures are courtesy of Quiet Earth. The film sounds less like a WWII movie and more of a survival movie that happens to use WWII as a backdrop. But knowing Peter Weir, this is bound to be material rife for his talent, and in the pictures there is certainly something unique in the squalid and rugged conditions. »

Its been almost seven years since Peter Weir last directed anything. I don't know where he's been all this time, but I'm glad he's back. Quiet Earth found the first six photos from Weir's new WWII film The Way Back. The drama follows a group of soldiers and prisoners who escape from a Siberian labor camp in 1940 during WWII. "Seven courageous multi-national prisoners discover the true meaning of friendship as their epic journey takes them across thousands of miles of hostile terrain en-route to India and their freedom." Starring in this film is Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan, Mark Strong, and Jim Sturgess. Read on! To be honest, this is the first time I've even heard about this movie. I didn't even know Weir was directing anything. I'm getting kind of a There Will Be Blood meets Defiance meets Seven Years in Tibet vibe from these photos, which is »

First Images And Synopsis For Peter Weir's The Way Back

22 December 2009 8:37 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It's been over six years since Peter Weir last released a movie, and fans of the Truman Show and Master and Commander director have probably been frustrated by the lack of detail about his next movie The Way Back. Now the silence has been broken! Quiet Earth found seven images and a synopsis for the film based on a true story about escapees from a Siberian labor camp. First the synopsis: When they escape a Siberian labor camp in 1940, seven courageous multi-national prisoners discover the true meaning of friendship as their epic journey takes them across thousands of miles of hostile terrain en-route to India and their freedom. Sounds good, especially if they leave out all the hokey trailer talk. The movie starts Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, Jim Sturgess and Saoirse Ronan, all actors I'd watch doing pretty much anything (yes, including Sturgess). Check out a handful of the new »

Stills From Peter Weir’s The Way Back

22 December 2009 5:26 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I've got no doubt that Peter Weir is one of the greatest of great filmmakers working today and every one of his too-rare films is a real event for me. While I'm waiting for his next picture The Way Back every little scrap of information is valuable, so I'm doing cartwheels at the first set of stills. You can see them all after the break. Here's the movie's official synopsis, which really should have been worded in a less blurby-cheesy fashion: Six-time Academy Award Nominee Peter Weir Directing. Based on the novel The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz. Award Winning A-List cast; Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan. When they escape a Siberian labor camp in 1940 seven courageous multi-national prisoners discover the true meaning of friendship as their epic journey takes them across thousands of miles of hostile terrain en-route to India and their freedom. Sydney Morning Herald interviews Peter Jackson. There's quite a defensive tone and quotable snark to his response to critics who gripe that he didn't show the story's kick off murder. On this point I agree with the Lord of the Rings auteur, although I wouldn't have phrased it so damningly and I hope he doesn't think that's the extent of the criticism.

First look at Peter Weir's prison escape epic The Way Back

It's been almost a year since the world learned about Peter Weir's next project. Touted as an epic and realistic WWII prisoner escape saga based on a true story, The Way Back sounded like a big-budget version of Van Diemme's Land and we hoped it would hold true on it's promises to be as rugged a tale.

Well, now we've got the first look at some official stills from the film for you and it looks as good as it sounded. The stills feature almost every member of the film's strong cast of leads all dirtied up.

Exclusive Interview: Possesion(s) star Laurence Fuller

1 December 2009 3:51 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Possession(s), a new Australian short, featured one of the most notable launches in recent memory. To coincide with the film’s release a famous Peter Booth artwork, Painting (Man With Bandaged Head), was sold off in The Deutscher and Hackett Important Fine Art Auction.

The tie-in between the film and the auction comes in the shape of actor Laurence Fuller who used the painting, which he owned, as inspiration for the dark, brooding short.  His character Frank, upon seeing the Peter Booth work, becomes embroiled with a sense of obsession; he simply has to own the piece and will do anything to make it so. However, it soon becomes clear that Frank is not the only one consumed by the desire to possess.

Laurence Fuller shines in the lead role and it is easy to see why he is a much sought after young actor. Having attended the Method »

Birthday Suits, An Oscar For Ed!

28 November 2009 6:20 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Each day we're celebriting the birth of various cinematic persons. Can someone in Hollywood please give their Oscar to Ed Harris today? I mean, my god how long does he have to wait for that damn thing? The rest of today's Sagittarians are less easy to shop for. What could we give Jon Stewart, for example, that he doesn't already have?

Ed, Laura and Jon

1896 Lilia Skala, Oscar nominated actress (Lilies of the Field)

1923 Gloria Grahame, Oscar winner (The Bad the Beautiful)

933 Hope Lange, Oscar nominated actress (Peyton Place, The Young Lions, Death Wish)

1941 Laura Antonelli, Italian actress, sex symbol

1946 Joe Dante He'll always have Gremlins, such a great 80s picture.

1949 Alexander Godunov, like Baryshnikov, he was a Russian ballet star who defected to America and co-starred in movies. It didn't go quite as well. He never achieved anything close to Misha's level of fame though he made for a memorable screen presence (Witness, »

10 closest Oscar races in the past 20 years

23 November 2009 1:12 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

One of the shrewdest Oscarologists on the planet is Tariq Khan of Fox News, who often generously shares his views of current and past derbies with Gold Derby readers. Here he takes a nostalgic look  at the past two decades, offering his take on the most competitive derbies. Words below are Tariq's. Thanks, m'friend!

We’ve often discussed those Oscar races that seem just too close to call . . . where it’s clear (or at least seems clear) that the eventual winner will nab the Oscar with only a few more votes than his or her nearest competitor. While we can never really know for sure (unless we get one of those top jobs at the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers,) we do have some idea of what may have been the closest races in Oscar history. Allow me to present what I believe were the 10 closest acting races over the course of the past 20 years. »

Remake Of The Brood Is Becoming A Reality

22 November 2009 8:54 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It's strange to think that David Cronenberg has been freaking us out for thirty years. Be it the head explosion in Scanners, the creation of Brundlefly in The Fly, or even Ed Harris' end in A History of Violence, his films have always existed on the far edge of extreme, even by today's standards. When you consider the impact his films have had, it's kind of strange that Hollywood has yet to make any crappy, updated remakes of them yet. There was a rumor a few years ago of a Scanners remake that never was, and Cronenberg himself signed on to remake The Fly back in September, but up until now the man's work has been untouched. Now to drop the other shoe... According to Shock Till You Drop, Cory Goodman, the writer of next year's Paul Bettany film Priest, is refinishing his script for The Brood, a remake »
