The Final Girl: A Few Thoughts on Feminism and Horror By Donato Totaro
One of the more important, if not groundbreaking, accounts/recuperations of the horror film from a feminist perspective is the 1993 Carol Clover's "Men, Women, and Chainsaws". One of the book's major points concerns the structural positioning of what she calls the Final Girl in relation to spectatorship. While most theorists label the horror film as a male-driven/male-centered genre, Clover points out that in most horror films, especially the slasher film, the audience, male and female, is structurally 'forced' to identify with the resourceful young female (the Final Girl) who survives the serial attacker and usually ends the threat (until the sequel anyway.) So while the narratively dominant killer's subjective point of view may be male within the narrative, the male viewer is still rooting for the Final Girl to overcome the killer. We can see this »

The crew on the set of Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy is ecstatic. On the recording stage, franchise star Heather Langenkamp is in the hot seat, talking about her turn as Nancy Thompson. Probably for the thousandth time. However, another special guest is arriving today. "Mark Patton," reveals co-producer and co-writer Thommy Hutson, wearing a t-shirt with Patton's visage (screaming while wearing a Krueger glove) and the exclamation "He's been found!" brandished across the chest. The Nightmare on Elm Street 2 star disappeared off the face of the Earth Stephen Geoffreys-style once the film was released. "In this day and age, I found it disconcerting we could not find this guy. But we did and we're super excited. He was thrilled we »

With production on Never Sleep Again under way, this writer had a chance to check in with the documentary's directing team of Daniel Farrands and Andrew Kasch to see how things are progressing with their project that explores the Elm Street legacy.
"Never Sleep Again is going amazingly well," said Farrands. "It's funny, but this feels like everything is coming full circle. I did a Halloween movie when I was younger, then I spent a few years in the Friday the 13th universe. So now I am working with Nightmare on Elm Street, and it's definitely a dream come true."
Generally, when creating a documentary, you tend to miss out on a lot of stars who maybe are reluctant to talk about past projects. This is not a phenomenon that Kasch and Farrands are experiencing at all with Never Sleep Again. In fact, the duo have found themselves elated at »

Today this scribe had the opportunity to visit the set of the upcoming A Nightmare on Elm Street documentary, Never Sleep Again, for one of their bigger days - actor Mark Patton who portrayed Jesse in the second franchise installment was on hand to talk about his very own Elm Street days.
Patton, who moved on from Hollywood shortly after Freddy's Revenge, came up to Los Angeles from Mexico to talk with the team behind Never Sleep Again and was gracious enough to chat briefly with Dread Central before he got started.
Twenty-five years after Patton took on the role of Jesse, the actor now weighs in on why he thinks the Nightmare franchise still remains so popular.
Patton said, "I think Noes is so popular because the franchise taps into an idea that goes into the depths of people's dreams and it's very easy for people to project themselves into that situation. »

We could tell you that because of Halloween looming and the myriad of other things going on, we skipped bringing you the Never Sleep Again Twitterfeed from last Friday. However, there were some other exciting things going on that we saved to bring you along with it.
First and foremost, Mark Patton (Jesse from Nightmare 2) has been found and will be doing his exclusive interview next Monday! It took forever to track him down, but now that we have, it's on, baby!
Also, the lovely Jenna Busch has just posted her exclusive Never Sleep Again interview with principals Dan Farrands, Thommy Hutson, and Andrew Kasch.
Couple all that with last week's pictures (see below), and you get proof positive that some things are indeed worth waiting for!

It’s a bit late but to finally end my Halloween champion Slasher report on who is the king out of Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger, I have watched the entire back catalogue of their films and given a run down on each characters franchise story and best kills.
Part 1 was on Jason, Part 2 was Michael Myers and finally Part 3 is on the killing Dream Demon Freddy Krueger.
Set on Elm Street, Freddy is the reason I struggled to sleep through the late 80’s due to being terrified of him visiting me in my dreams.
Beware pictures of blood, a lot of gushing blood and other violent deaths.
And so a little rhyme to begin this story:
One, two, Freddy’s coming for you.
Three, Four, Better Lock your door.
Five, Six, grab your Crucifix.
Seven, Eight, Gonna stay up late.
Nine, Ten, Never sleep again.

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'. I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!
25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen. »

The teaser for the Michael Bay-produced remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, due in April 2010, debuted today and it looks creep-tastic! Watchmen's Jackie Earle Haley is taking over Freddy Kruger claw duties from Robert Englund while the batch of teen victims includes my new favorite actress, Melrose Place's Katie Cassidy (also seen briefly: Friday Night Lights' Connie Britton)! Fans of the original flick will notice certain iconic images like Freddy's glove appearing out of the bathtub and a female (who I think is Cassidy) levitating out of her bed mid-dream. In the wake of last year's restart of "Friday the 13th" comes the resurrection of the other great slasher franchise of the 1980s. "A Nightmare on Elm Street," the movie that established New Line Cinema as a true studio player and awakened the careers of Wes Craven, Johnny Depp and Robert Englund, will be coming back in April of 2010, and the trailer just premiered this morning. The new film is directed by Samuel Bayer (who has made a name for himself as a video director for Green Day, Metallica, Garbage and others) and stars Jackie Earle Haley as supernatural baddie Freddy Krueger.
Based on the trailer, it appears as thought the new movie gets back to the general creepiness that inhabited the first of the franchise back in 1984. The subsequent films in the series had a more carnival atmosphere, and while they had their charms, they typically became wackier (and paler) versions of the original. »
