Rollergirls get the Hollywood treatment as Drew Barrymore makes her debut as a director… but Jessica Holland is the real thing
When I went this month to an advance screening of Whip It – a teen movie about a small-town girl who joins a roller derby league in Austin, Texas – it wasn't just because I wanted to see how Drew Barrymore measured up as a first-time director, and because I like Ellen Page, who stars in Juno. It was mostly because I got hooked on roller derby three years ago in the same way Page's character does in the film, and I wanted to see how the sport is to be presented to the world.
"Chicks beating each other up on roller skates" is the shorthand often used for women's flat track derby, but to me and 50 of my London Rollergirls teammates and rivals who were at the screening, that's about »

Condolences are pouring out heavily in the wake of Brittany Murphy's sudden death on Sunday morning, December 20. The 32-year-old star's fellow celebs are sharing their grief and sweet memories on Twitter and elsewhere.
Ashton Kutcher, who dated Murphy from 2002 to 2003, took it to his Twitter to express his loss. "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon," he tweeted, adding "see you on the other side kid."
Actress Alicia Silverstone, who co-starred with Murphy in 1995 flick "Clueless", told People, "I'm so saddened to hear this news. I loved working with Brittany. It happens from time to time.
Came in from the cold, fed the cat and the next thing you know. There she is. Juliette Lewis filling every nook and cranny of me brain.
When actresses invade my consciousness to that degree I immediately surrender to the moment: Think about the last time I saw them (Whip It in this case which was such fun), look at pictures or videos, surf the web to find out what they're up to. In Juliette's case she's still plugging away at that music career (her last record Terra Incognito hit in September) and she's filming or was filming Due Date, Todd Phillips' follow up to The Hangover.
We'll also see her next year in Betty Anne Waters, the latest Hilary Swank vehicle. I have no idea how big her role will be but I hope she shares a scene with fellow Whip It alum Ari Graynor, »

Director Todd Phillips' follow-up to The Hangover is another new comedy titled Due Date. The movie stars Robert Downey Jr. as an expectant father on a road trip racing to get to the birth of his first child. Zach Galifianakis stars as his "unlikely travel companion" and the two of them race across the country. The cast also includes Jamie Foxx, Juliette Lewis, Michelle Monaghan, Alan Arkin, and RZA. It sounds like Planes, Trains & Automobiles but with an expectant father twist. SlashFilm has the first photo which looks like it was scanned from a copy of Entertainment Weekly (but I'm not sure?). Did one of them bring a dog as well? Downey Jr. and Galifianakis are both hilarious actors on their own, yet they make a perfect mismatched pair of travelers. My problem with this, and most of Todd Phillips' films, is that it will probably never go »

Part 3: From Ben Elton to L Ron Hubbard
Ben Elton Turned rock history into a 'jukebox musical' cash cow
"The Matrix meets the Arthurian legend meets Terminator 2," was how Ben Elton hilariously described his Queen musical when it debuted in 2002. A more honest commentator might have pegged We Will Rock You as being a bit like Suzi Quatro directing a particularly stupid episode of Deep Space Nine using a cast entirely drawn from the Camden branch of Fresh & Wild. By blowing off any regard for plot, cliche or character arc, Elton took the genteel traditions of musical theatre and rock's outsider chic, and served them up as a mindless Mor smoothie. Marketing men realised there were plenty more theatregoers too old to rock'n'roll, yet too dumb for Sondheim. And so, as Tonight's The Night et al followed the idiot-proof recipe drawn up by Wwry and its close predecessor, Mamma Mia! »

Juliette Lewis has said that she hated herself when she was a drug user. The actress-turned-singer told the Evening Standard that she stopped using illegal substances through the Scientology Narconon rehabilitation programme. Lewis said: "When I did drugs I hated myself. It was a shame-filled time. It was destructive. That all feels a long way off now, though. "I quit drugs at 22 and I'm 36 now so it feels like (more) »

Juliette Lewis prefers singing to acting. The 36-year-old star - who is about to release her new 'Terra Incognita' - is thrilled she decided to embark of a side singing project because she would have been "sad" if she hadn't tried her hand at an industry she loves so much. She said: "Music is more personal and exposing than acting. I was really closeted about it for years, but decided I'd forever be sad if I didn't pursue being a songwriter. As I grew older and lived life, experiencing more things, I just knew I had to step out of the safety zone and do what I loved." Earlier this year, the brunette star split from her group Juliette »

The karma-fuelled comedy My Name Is Earl is getting daily repeats on E4 – and there are plenty of reasons to catch up
My Name Is Earl is back. No, they're not making any new episodes – although one never knows with Us TV – but Earl is getting repeated, daily on E4 from tonight, which is good news for the many fans of the show and even better news for those who somehow eluded its charms over its 96-episode run.
When Earl first hit in 2005, it hit big. Impressive ratings in the States earned it a decent, prominent slot in the schedules here – unlike, say, the massively underrated and still brilliant King Of The Hill. The story of a man with a huge list of misdeeds to atone for, Earl hit its stride almost immediately. The karma-fuelled plotlines twisted and turned while exploring the locale of Camden County and its colourful denizens. »

Sundance released their slate for 2010. I feel a special bond with the Sundance Film Festival. Not because I’ve been there, but because the guy in charge of it this year, John Cooper, shares my name. Because we share this bond, I feel that I’m able to take license in referring to the man as Coop for the rest of this article.
For the annual event held in Park City, Utah from January 21-31, thousands of films are submitted and screened — this year, 3,724 films were viewed by the festival’s ten programmers. I wonder when they slept.
Coop has high hopes for the festival as a whole:
“We may even be going into a golden age for independent films, in that the technology will make it possible for the films to be made and for audiences to see them. The industry is going through a major evolutionary stage right now, there’s no doubt about that, »

The Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the lineup of films playing in competition from January 21 through January 31, 2010. The early fest typically debuts some of the best films the year has to offer, like 2009’s Precious, (500) Days of Summer, and Moon.
I’m bummed I won’t be in Park City, Utah next month because the lineup looks great, and these are just the films playing in competition. Here’s a few that stood out to me:
The Allen Ginsberg trial film Howl starring James Franco, a documentary by Alex Gibney (a truly great filmmaker) on Jack Abramoff, Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious, a doc about Joan Rivers, the directorial debut of “How I Met Your Mother” star Josh Radnor titled Happythankyoumoreplease (I wrote a glowing script review of it here), Hesher with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, and Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

Photo: Sundance Today the Sundance Institute announced the films that will be in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in both the U.S. and International dramatic and documentary categories. The festival will run from January 21-31 in Park City, Utah. There are a few changes this year as there will be no opening-night picture and the festival will take select festival films to eight cities during as the fest plays out.
Last year notable films such as this year's major Oscar contenders Precious and An Education debuted at Sundance 2009 as did audience and critical favorite (500) Days of Summer.
As for this year's crop I have highlighted a few titles among the list below in red, but I have primarily done so considering the names attached to the pictures not necessarily based on any advanced buzz I've heard around any of the films. Names to look out for include Ryan Gosling, »

I've been fortunate enough to attend Sundance Film Festival for the past two years, and it's quite an experience. I tend to spend my time there gorging on as many movies as possible. In my two trips and 10 cumulative days spent in Park City, Ut, I've seen roughly 50 screenings. Not even as press really; writing would consume too much time.
Sundance 2010 is going to be different: either I'll be here manning the blog or out in Utah seeing only the occasional movie while participating in MTV's ongoing coverage. And manning the blog, of course. After looking at the competition lineup, just released today, I'm very much hoping that I'll be able to attend. There are some cool-looking movies in contention, and many more yet to be announced that aren't competing. Hit the jump to check out some of the highlights and then head over to the Sundance website for the full list. »

The Sundance Film Festival is where some of the great films of the year will get their first viewings, and if you don’t believe me, here’s just some of the great films this year that made their debut at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival: Precious, World’s Greatest Dad, Big Fan, Bronson, Moon and even (500) Days of Summer, which I didn’t care for but made a big splash.
The festival is where buzz starts happening and now Sundance has released the list of which films will be in competition for 2010. Keep in mind that there are plenty of other films which play out of competition and can be just as great. But some of the big names fighting for the crown are the Allen Ginsberg obscenity trial film Howl starring General Hospital’s James Franco, Hesher starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo’s directing debut Sympathy for Delicious, »
