I kind of feel like Michael Mann has gotten a little sloppy in his directing since the transition from film to digital...
After the brilliantly constructed slow burn thrillers Manhunter, The Last of the Mohicans, Ali (admittedly not great but solidly produced) Heat and The Insider, his recent films Collateral and Miami Vice have felt rushed and a little sloppy. They seem at times underlit, the action is often rushed with a LOT of handheld, and they appear choppy, as if spliced together haphazardly.
Don't get me wrong i really liked collateral, but i felt that miami vice was very slap dash with a lot less craft than his previous efforts. I admire Dion Beebe and Michael Mann attempting to breach the digital age and push its limits, but it feels as if the speed of digital filmmaking has compromised Mann's original perfectionist craft
