New Batch of Book of Eli Images

17 December 2009 9:54 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

When Denzel Washington’s “Book of Eli” opens January 15, 2010, I’m pretty sure I’m going to enjoy it. Then again, give me a post-apocalyptic landscape, throw in swords, roving marauders, and balls-out action, and I’m usually a happy camper. Check out a new batch of images from the movie, starring Denzel as a loner who must fight his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind. Out to stop him is Gary Oldman, playing a pimped out Warlord, and Mila Kunis as Solara, who may or may not be trying to trick Eli out of his book. Also in the cast, Jennifer Beals, Michael Gambon, Tom Waits, and the always delightfully eccentric Malcolm McDowell. Directed by the brothers Hughes. Fans of the Halloween franchise have been decisively split over Rob Zombie’s reboot of John Carpenter’s classic slasher flick – especially in regards to this summer’s sequel, Halloween II. If you didn’t see the uproar in opinion, check our our review of the film Here.

Since Halloween II was in theaters, we’ve learned that Zombie’s early promise of an exclusive director’s cut on DVD/Blu-ray was going to be made good. As promised, the director’s cut will be Very different from the theatrical version of the film – specifically in terms of how “dark” the tone is (it gets darker than the theatrical version???).

As a preview of the forthcoming Halloween II DVD/Blu-ray, today we have at clip from the “dark version,” courtesy of Shock Til Ya Drop; in this case, a (slightly) alternate ending to the film.

Alternate ending to Rob Zombie’s ‘Halloween 2′ lands online

14 December 2009 4:14 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

The alternate ending to Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2 has made its way online and its just as mediocre as the original. We show you both so can compare and contrast.

The original ending [spoilers ahead, matey] showed Michael Myers (Tyler Mane) shot by police in an abandoned shed. After Myers is presumably dead, Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton) picks up Michael’s giant knife and starts to stab him repeatably. She exits the shed wearing Michael’s mask and winds in a mental hospital where she sees the same visions that her brother did throughout the film.In the alternate ending, Myers has his mask taken off and kills Dr. Samuel Loomis (Malcolm McDowell) outside the shed. Myers is lit-up by surrounding police. Laurie comes out, picks up the knife, screams and is also shot by police. She ends up in the asylum, same as the original. Halloween 2 will be released on »

Wff 09: Review of Suck

7 December 2009 12:23 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Year: 2009

Director: Rob Stefaniuk

Writer: Rob Stefaniuk

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: Marina Antunes

Rating: 8 out of 10

The first time I heard the name Rob Stefaniuk was in conjunction with Phil the Alien, a little Canadian film which was described as “seriously bent.” Anyone familiar with that project may think they know what to expect with Stefaniuk’s directorial follow-up and though they may be prepared for the zaniness, they’re probably not ready for the sheer awesomeness of Suck.

Written, directed and starring Stefaniuk, it’s the story of a band trying to make it in the hard knock music industry. They’re sound isn’t bad but The Winners, led by Joey (Stefaniuk) are playing dives and going no where fast. So fast in fact that they’re manager (Dave Foley thankfully wearing pants for his entire appearance in this film) is asking to be relieved of »

Top of the class: the five best boarding-school movies

5 December 2009 4:10 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

If… (15) Lindsay Anderson, 1968 Starring Malcolm McDowell

Made in the heady days of global unrest and protest, Anderson's boarding-school flick caught the mood of anti-establishment disaffection. Its exotic flourishes – making out with a libidinous waitress; gunning down the faculty with weapons stolen from the cadet force armoury – fuelled the fantasies of rebellious schoolboys everywhere.

Best scene

College House listens in uncomfortable silence as Travis (McDowell) is given a brutal caning by the head whip.

Flirting (15) John Duigan, 1991

Starring Noah Taylor, Thandie Newton

"One thing about boarding school, 24 hours a day, you're surrounded," begins misfit Taylor, stuck in a rural Australian boys' school in 1965. "Either you abandon yourself and become a herd animal, or dig deeper into your head and skulk inside." Taylor finds a different path when he discovers love with Newton from a nearby girls' school.

Best scene

Taylor defends his girlfriend's honour, in the boxing ring against the school's top pugilist. »

Trinity of Terrors: Meet Mister Sam Shearon

1 December 2009 11:06 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

One of the coolest things about Fangoria's 30th anniversary Trinity Of Terrors in Las Vegas was an impressive poster depicting every guest of the blood-soaked weekend.  Besides classic covers and various personalities including Slipknot, there were various monsters and creatures.  It also served as the cover of the event's program.

That central image was created by talented British artist, Sam Shearon. The illustrator sat down to discuss his work for Fangoria and his other horrifying imagery.  The cheerful bearded Brit talks about his influences and inspirations.

Pat Jankiewicz: How did you come up with the impressive painting for Trinity of Terrors?

Sam Shearon: Initially Scott Licina asked whether I'd be interested in creating a peice of dark-art for the front cover for the official programme to the event. It would be printed up as a limited edition comic sized souvenir to the Halloween weekend at the Palms to celebrate »

[TV] Superman: The Complete Animated Series

30 November 2009 2:00 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

When Superman: The Animated Series debuted that bright childhood day, the first thing I remember thinking was “It’s not as cool as Batman.” Dropping the black paper background of Batman: The Animated Series in favor of a brighter and more traditional white, Superman was a cheerier series right from the outset. Whereas Batman only gave passing glances to the dark origin of Bruce Wayne’s caped crusader, Superman’s is embroiled in many of the plots for each episode. When it comes to DC iconography, the difference between the significance of the emblems on each hero’s chest becomes even more apparent in the animated series. Batman’s yellow and black bat logo became an instrument, a tool; Superman’s logo, however, the sign of his lineage, works its way into many of the show’s storylines. The film’s premise is outlined as:

A Conversation with Captain Howdy: The Fangoria Interview with Eileen Dietz

28 November 2009 7:01 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

With vast experience on stage and screen (big and small), Eileen Dietz' career has woven a path in-and-out of the horror genre. While horror fans will no doubt associate the actress with her role as the face of evil in William Friedkin's Oscar-winning 1973 film The Exorcist, Dietz has many stories to tell. Fangoria's Australian correspondent Lee Gambin recently sat down for a one-on-one interview to discuss her career and craft.

Lee Gambin/Fangoria: What were some of your very first jobs in the entertainment industry, as I understand you started super young and how did the Neighborhood Playhouse Theatre School benefit you as a young actress?

Eileen Dietz: I worked at a Summer Stock company in Kalamazoo Michigan. It was a very bad place and the director of the theatre only brought me up there to rob me of my innocence if you know what I mean. »

Denzel Washington's Glamour Shot on The Book of Eli Poster

24 November 2009 11:30 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Warner Bros has debuted the official poster for The Book of Eli on MySpace tonight. Just in case you couldn't tell from the poster, this stars Denzel Washington as well as Mila Kunis, Gary Oldman, Michael Gambon, Ray Stevenson, Malcolm McDowell, and Tom Waits. Usually when an actor uses his face for the entire poster, it's for a comedy or some drama no one cares about. However, this poster is actually pretty awesome, just because it's a gritty Denzel Washington looking off into the distance with some badass shades. What more could you ask for? And my next question is if we'll get one of these for Oldman, too? We ran the first teaser trailer for The Book of Eli in July and followed it up with a full-length trailer in September. I'd suggest re-watching both of those to get excited for this again, as it looks pretty awesome. The »

Voicing Celebrity Concerns

20 November 2009 10:41 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Movie stars sell movie tickets, but do they also sell video games? The latest title to put this question to the test is "Brütal Legend," a new action-adventure title set in a heavy-metal land of mythic creatures and crushing tunes that stars Tenacious D frontman and "School of Rock" maestro Jack Black as the voice (and likeness) of its head-banging hero Eddie Riggs.

Developed by acclaimed designer Tim Schafer (of "Grim Fandango," "Psychonauts") with Black's creative input, "Brütal Legend" is a heavily hyped game that's invested a lot in the popularity of Black, who's not only touted in ads as the lead but who even has shown up on red carpets dressed as Riggs. More so than any other recent game, "Brütal Legend" has pinned its retail hopes on players' fondness for its lead voice actor, a decision that says a lot about the industry's desire to market their games around recognizable voice talent. »

Werner Herzog Brings The Music Back

By

Alex Simon

Academy Award-nominated German film director, screenwriter, actor and opera director Werner Herzog was born Werner H. Stipetić on 5 September 1942 in Munich. His family moved to the remote Bavarian village of Sachrang in the Chiemgau Alps after the house next to theirs was destroyed during bombing towards the close of World War II. When he was twelve, he and his family moved back to Munich. The same year, Herzog was told to sing in front of his class at school and adamantly refused. He was almost expelled for this and until the age of eighteen listened to no music, sang no songs and studied no instruments. He would later say that he would easily give ten years from his life to be able to play an instrument. At fourteen, he was inspired by an encyclopedia entry about film-making which he says provided »

Celebrity Biography: Emma Stone

Emily Jean Stone, better known as Emma Stone, was born on November 6, 1988, in Scottsdale, Arizona, the daughter of Jeff and Krista Stone, and the older sister of Spencer. Stone started acting at a relatively young age, appearing in a school production of The Wind in the Willows when she was just 11. Regional theater appearances followed and eventually, at 15, Stone convinced her parents -- using popcorn and a PowerPoint presentation, of all things, keyed to the Madonna song "Hollywood" -- to let her take a serious shot at acting, which meant relocating to Los Angeles. "I just always wanted to act from birth,” Stone told Saturday Night Magazine. "I think I was drawn to comedy originally because when I was really young, by the time I was eight, I had seen movies like The Jerk (1979), Animal House (1978), and Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) with my dad, and I knew them by heart. I loved them, »
