The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

29 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

New Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Featurette

28 December 2009 7:39 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

One of the major releases of summer 2010 is Disney’s adaptation of the popular video game, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The action-adventure film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as the title character and is produced (in his trademark style) by Jerry Bruckheimer.

The Prince of Persia trailer released in November to a slightly mixed reaction here at Screen Rant and part of that is due to the history of the genre lacking in quality and not staying true to the key elements of the games.

In addition to the teaser, we’ve seen some behind-the-scenes footage including the first Prince of Persia featurette which focused on the character of Dastan (Gyllenhaal), his background and his journey within the film. This second video we have below focuses on The Sands of Time itself in the form of the magical dagger that represents the plot device of the video game and this movie. »

Check out the new featurette below and let us know what you think.

"Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time"  is set to be released on Memorial Day 2010.

In the fantasy adventure based on Ubisoft's popular video game, Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in sixth century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – Trailer

24 December 2009 5:11 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Directed by: Jon Turteltaub

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina, Monica Bellucci

Rating: Nr

Release Date: July 16, 2010

Trailer Score: 5/10

My Thoughts: The legacy of Nic Cage’s haircuts is going to continue with this movie, which has the Cagemaster looking grayed and shaggy (or homeless). This style kind of brings me back to Bangkok Dangerous, a place I don’t want to revisit. His delivery of his few lines in this trailer don’t give me much hope. Listen to how he says “You are going to be a source for good, and a very important sorcerer.” It’s not gravelly enough to distance itself from just being Nic Cage with a magic wand. It’s also not very convincing. Consider his goofy tone with his goofy look, and you’ve got a skeptical situation. One of his more laughable performances? I really hope not. »

Best Actress (get the full chart here)

Yup, I can't ignore it any longer. Meryl Streep has moved into the top spot, dashing An Education breakout star Carey Mulligan's »

Video - 'Prince of Persia: The Featurette of Dastan'

19 December 2009 3:48 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

The trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time showed us quite a bit of action, looking every bit the Jerry Bruckheimer summer movie it's been designed to be. Now there's a new featurette that focuses on Dastan, the Jake Gyllenhaal character.

Gyllenhaal joins director Mike Newell and Lord Bruckheimer in talking a little bit abot the character and the genesis of the subtitle, The Sands of Time. There's also what I think is our first look at Alfred Molina, so that's good news for the ladies.

There appear to heavy doses of action in this flick, a lot of it performed by Gyllenhaal himself, and it also looks like it's following the formula of Pirates of the Caribbean, with more saucy humor that you might have originally expected. »
