Ekland Was 'Accidental' Bond Girl

6 May 2008 5:17 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Britt Ekland accidentally landed the coveted role of a Bond girl in 1974's The Man With The Golden Gun, after auditioning for another part in the hit film.

The 65-year-old appeared in front of producers to try out for a minor role in the Roger Moore-starring James Bond film.

But movie bosses were so impressed by her physique, they gave her the more high profile role of Mary Goodnight, which became her most famous film outing of her career.

She says, "When I auditioned for The Man With The Golden Gun I was up for the part of the bad guy's mistress. But the director has seen a picture of me in a bikini and decided I should be the Bond girl Mary Goodnight instead. It was great fun. It was the best job I ever had."

Movie Reviews: Made Of Honor

2 May 2008 10:33 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The romantic comedy Made of Honor will be the only new film opening wide against Iron Man (which opened Thursday night) this weekend. Some critics seem to agree that it represents effective counter-programming. The New York Times's Stephen Holden remarks that the movie "adds tart satirical flavors to a cotton-candy formula without sabotaging the sugar rush." Roger Moore in the Orlando Sentinel comments that "fortunately ... [the movie] earns enough goodwill in a clever and sexy opening act to carry it through" to the end. Most other critics, however, suggest that it's merely another rendering of the 1997 film My Best Friend's Wedding, with a gender reversal, and one even compares it, unfavorably, with the classic The Philadelphia Story. He is the Toronto Star's Philip Marchand, who remarks that the audience is not likely to show much interest in the principal character, played by Patrick Dempsey. "Somewhere in the shades of Hollywood, the ghost of Cary Grant is shaking his head," Marchand writes. Kyle Smith in the New York Post calls Dempsey's character "a preening yet uptight jerk," and says that the outcome of the movie -- which character will wind up with whom? -- is never in doubt. "Still," he writes, "there was a certain amount of suspense in the air at the screening of Made of Honor: Would Tom and Hannah realize they're perfect for each other at the altar, or would I burn down the theater first?" Desson Thomson frames his review as if he were writing about a freeway accident. "Actors Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan are trapped in the wreckage of a bad romantic comedy. Observers suggest the vehicle in which they were riding was poorly engineered and believed to be constructed of cheap, recycled material. The severity of their injuries is unclear at this time."

Blackman: 'Moore's Age Benefitted Bond'

18 April 2008 4:59 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Former James Bond star Sir Roger Moore achieved his classic turn as the superspy because he was older - according to ex-Bond girl Honor Blackman.

The 82-year-old British actress played Pussy Galore in the 1964 movie Goldfinger alongside Sir Sean Connery, and believes Moore - who landed the role aged 46 - brought humour to the part because he wasn't a young actor.

She says, "Roger wasn't heavy enough. I think if he had been much younger when he played Bond he might have been more serious and less tongue-in-cheek.

"Sean had the killer instinct and was the sexiest Bond. But I guess he was the first so he became the template."

Movie Reviews: Nim's Island

4 April 2008 11:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Many of the critics reviewing Nim's Island realize that most of the folks reading their reviews will never see the movie unless they're the parents of small children, so they set down teh barest assessments. "Nim's Island is strictly for the 8-and-under crowd," Lou Lumenick writes, providing most parents with the information that they're looking for. Michael Sragow is a bit more specific, writing that kids "will find Nim's Island a stunningly empty experience." But Roger Moore in the Orlando Sentinel sums up: "All things considered, the movie does a good enough job of filling that void of kid films between cartoons and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants."

Moore Plans Autobiography

11 March 2008 9:02 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Former James Bond star Roger Moore has finally agreed to write a book on his life - because many of the people he will mention are not around to read it.

The 80-year-old actor has always put off penning an autobiography, fearing he'd upset his acquaintances on and off screen with his revelations.

However, now most of them have passed away, he's changed his mind.

He tells Dutch Television programme Rtl Boulevard, "My wife has persuaded me that I should write my book. Before I forget everything. And which is happening rapidly.

"I never really wanted to write my book about my life, cause I was thinking there were too many people alive, but now, a few are disappearing, so I can write about it."

Moore plans to tell the story of his childhood as well as documenting his rise to fame and his experiences while playing 007 in seven of the superspy films.

Moore Admits He Was 'Too Old' To Be Bond

4 January 2008 4:11 AM, PST | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Former James Bond star Sir Roger Moore has finally conceded he carried on in the role of the womanising spy for too long.

More than 20 years on from his last appearance in 1985's A View To A Kill, Moore admits playing Bond seven times in a row - up to the age of 57 - was just too much of a stretch of the imagination, even for Hollywood.

Recalling his final stint as 007, he remarks dryly, "I was only about 400 years too old for the part."
