Serious African-American cinema scarcely exists. It arrives in fits and sputters, in the occasional legends (Melvin Van Peebles, Gordon Parks), outliers (Charles Burnett, Julie Dash) or mavericks (Spike Lee). But demanding cinema based around the black experience are largely absent from American screens, displaced by gangstas, guns and masquerading comedians in drag or fat suits (Tyler Perry, Eddie Murphy). The film industry has always loathed challenging movies, no matter the race, ethnicity or gender of their subject matter, but for black creators, making artistic cinema and getting it seen is a near insurmountable task. Can Lee Daniels' "Precious" change all that?
The Sundance-winning, Oprah-backed and Tyler Perry-supported "Precious" broke all box office records for a limited release last weekend, grossing $1.8 million on just 18 screens. The film will expand nationally in subsequent weekends. According to distributor Lionsgate, "Precious" drew an equal share of both black and white »

His Disney-fied A Christmas Carol may have opened to big bucks last weekend, but it seems like Jim Carrey might be angling for roles more akin to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. His new site, jimcarrey.com was submerged in a flood of clicks late last week as fans and haters spouted off about the creepy-beautiful experience that's as visually bizarre as a Magritte painting and as flat-out weird as Monty Python.
The site is the brainchild of 65 Media, and although they'd worked on sites for Carrey films like the The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, this one was different from the beginning, says Cco Alvin Reis. "In this case we were going into the mind of the genius." 65 Media presented Carrey with several concepts, one of them being this visually-driven idea that instantly resonated with Carrey. "He opened up his world to us," says Reis, »

It's still unclear whether director Christopher Nolan will be returning for a third chapter in the Batman revamp, let alone what villain(s) will square off against the Dark Knight. Still, there have been rumors for months now that The Riddler will make a return appearance some fifteen years after Jim Carrey portrayed the character in Batman Forever.
Everyone from Eddie Murphy, to Johnny Depp to Curb Your Enthusiasm funnyman Larry David have been mentioned in connection to the roll of Edward Nigma, the villain who compulsively confesses to his crimes in riddle form. So when MTV recently sat down with actor and comedian Dane Cook (My Best Friend's Girl), they asked him if he would be interested in the part.
If they brought back The Riddler — a new Riddler the way they did with The Joker — that would be badass. I would do that.

Almost exactly a year after Taken stormed American theaters, director Pierre Morel will return with From Paris With Love, a great title for a movie that is about the exact opposite. Oh sure, it's Paris, but love is probably the wrong emotion.
The film stars John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte or Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan or Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Only in France. I hate to be so reductive about it, but it's an oil-and-water cop movie; the rest is just details.
However, From Paris with Love has some of the coolest posters in the game this year. The first, a flip of the Eiffel Tower as a gun, is terrific, and I like these new character posters, too. Click to enlarge: »

Another week and another weak comic book movie rumor. If it’s not Eddie Murphy as the Riddler or Cher as Catwoman, it’s some secondhand whisper about Spider-Man 4.
The script for the Spidey sequel has been completed after several re-writes, so it’s about that time for returning director Sam Raimi to start casting. Tobey Maguire has already agreed to play Peter Parker again and Kirsten Dunst is back as Mary Jane Watson. The big question is who is the villain, or should I say… are the villains?
Mania.com thinks they have the answer. According to their “reliable sources,” Rachel McAdams has met with producers to play Felicia Hardy, better known as the Black Cat, in Spider-Man 4.
In the comics, Hardy is a “cat” burglar and a love interest to Spider-Man, transforming from an enemy to an ally in the story. She’s a flirtatious, catty little minx too. »

Comedian Katt Williams was arrested for burglary and criminal trespassing in Georgia on Sunday, after allegedly breaking into a home.
According to The Associated Press, Williams is expected to go before a judge on Monday afternoon (November 9) to answer to charges. The "Wild 'N Out" alumnus, who has made appearances in movies alongside Ice Cube and Eddie Murphy, is in custody at a facility in Coweta County, Georgia. A representative with the prison would only confirm to MTV News that Williams was being held on felony and misdemeanor charges.
The comedian has exhibited unusually erratic behavior in the past year, beginning with a string of puzzling public appearances, before Williams was admitted to a psych ward in South Carolina last November.
Prior to his hospitalization, Williams was arrested on gun charges in »

Disney’s A Christmas Carol
Directed by: Robert Zemeckis
Cast: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn, Bob Hoskins
Running Time: 1 hr. 36 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: November 6, 2009
Plot: Charles Dickens’ classic tale getting another version, this time in 3D. Scrooge (Carrey) is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve in the hopes that the old man can change his nasty ways.
Who’S It For? First and foremost, this is for people who love the story that’s been told many times. For the most part, it stays true to form. Those loving the third dimension will be pleased as well. Parents on the other hand will begin to worry right away when Scrooge removes some coins from a dead man’s eyes.
Expectations: I’ve seen almost every version of this tale and lean toward A Muppet Christmas Carol as my personal fave. Jim Carrey has »

When it was announced that Robert Zemeckis was directing an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” starring Jim Carrey and made with 3D motion-capture, my response was viciously negative. Zemeckis had left behind movies like “Back to the Future” and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”, movies with characters and charming stories, in favor of 3D motion-captured films featuring CG characters who resembled the voice actor except they were trapped deep within the uncanny valley (the place where CG facsimiles of people look like very expensive animatronics). Throwing Jim Carrey into the mix to have him constantly mug for the camera made the idea of a 3D motion-captured film even more unappealing. And “A Christmas Carol”? How many times do we need to see this story? Seeing it in 3D with Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge was an argument not to make the movie. (Hit the jump to find out why »

"Spotlight" music video shows Usher urging broken-hearted Gucci Mane to come to his party. The video is directed by Benny Boom and has cameos from Eddie Murphy's oldest daughter Bria Murphy and Young Money's new artist Nicki Minaj.
"Spotlight" is confirmed to be one of the new materials in Gucci Mane's second studio album "The State vs. Radric Davis". The song's producer Polow da Don said the song was born because Gucci wanted to do an experiment.
"He did the hard part," Polow told MTV. "He owns the streets right now. All I did was what was easy for me - take what he's built and capitalize off it. We work hand-in-hand because I understand the pop side and I understand the street side and I'm from Atlanta."
"Usher, Gucci, Polow, it is what it is. It was a natural vibe. Me and Gucci did a bunch of records. »

We have just discovered from our sources that director John Singleton has his next project and its not the A-Team as reports would have lead you at one time to believe- even though they are filming that movie now; but is a comedy concert film.
We discovered that Singleton has decided to film comedian DeRay Davis’ stand-up performance (yet to be titled) and release it nationally, and not as a DVD for the video store but as the first stand up film in years to be released theatrically. As of this writing, rumor has it that the film will be shot next month.
Davis, you may recall, recently featured his comedic performance in Shaq’s Comedy All Stars on Showtime and was in several films such as Imagine That (starring Eddie Murphy), Semi-Pro (starring Will Ferrell) and Code Name: The Cleaner (with Cedric The Entertainer) just to name a few »

It's the first November of 2009, which means it's time to pull that lever, touch that screen or figure out whatever newfangled contraption your district has provided: today is Election Day, so cast that vote!
I put that exclamation point in there not because I'm excited to vote in New York's mayoral election, but because Election Day gets me thinking about what a rich topic elections have been for cinema. Combining intrigue, corruption, passion and the odd sex scandal, politics in general and elections in particular have made for some big screen gems over the years. Here are my favs.
Thomas Jefferson Johnson (Eddie Murphy) in "The Distinguished Gentleman": This flick is potent satire lurking within broad comedy: Johnson's conman epiphany is to ditch his illegal shenanigans and start sucking the enriching teet of the Washington establishment. He looses his ode-to-a-forefather's moniker, appropriates the name and campaign signage of a recently deceased politician and – bingo! »

The CW announced this morning that Eddie Murphy, last seen in Imagine That, will make a special appearance during the November 18 season finale of America's Next Top Model. Instead of guest-judging, the friend-to-fatsuits will support his daughter, Bria, who will be involved in the Julia Clancey final runway fashion show. Fun fact: Bria is credited for the children's drawings in Murphy's Daddy Day Care. [E!] »

There's some nutty news from America's Next Top Model today. A very famous face will be making an appearance on this season's finale. Courtesy of E! Online we learn that none other than Eddie Murphy is coming to America...'s Next Top Model.
According to E!'s exclusive CW source, the famous funny man won't be sitting at the judges panel for the finale, but rather in the audience for the final runway show. Why you ask? Well, it's not that Eddie is a tireless supporter of 5'7'' and under models, rather his daughter Bria Murphy will be walking the runway with the Antm finalists. So the proud pappa will be in the audience to cheer her on. And I'm sure, if Tyra has her way, in a very camera friendly location. »

I never thought I'd be saying this, but Abed was the best part of last night's Community. His spot-on Christian Bale-as-Batman impersonation had me chuckling from "There's a storm building on the horizon" to "Happy Halloween." Batman seems to be enjoying a little pop-culture resurgence right now, from Modern Family's mention of the Caped Crusader this week ("Batman doesn't get picked on because he's a muscular genius") to CollegeHumor's parody of the superhero's vanishing gimmick. And while it's true that Bale's raspy accent is an easy target for laughs, I was nevertheless delighted by how fully Abed embraced Batman's persona. »

Ever since we saw that Chevy Chase's Pierce comes to Annie's Day of the Dead party dressed as the Beastmaster on tonight's Community (NBC, 8 p.m. Et), we've been wondering how that awesomely bad costume choice was made. So, we phoned the writers of the episode to find out. According to Jon Pollack, who penned the half hour with Tim Hobert, "The joke was that we wanted Pierce to be doing something that he thought the kids would be into — but it was something that actually kids might have been into in the '80s. Well I guess we shouldn't be too surprised about this next news story, but still, after seeing Adam Sandler poke fun at his own brand of low brow comedy in Judd Apatow's Funny People, it kind of felt like he may have been reaching a turning point in his career. Maybe he was actually getting interested in taking on more dramatic roles, and films that actually had something to say. Maybe he had earned enough money to start being more picky with his projects. But, nah... of course not. Let's not get carried away here! Variety [1] reports that Sandler has signed on to star in a romantic comedy for Sony called Jack and Jill, where he will play both Jack and his twin sister Jill. Yep, dual role cross-dressing... this one should make Eddie Murphy proud. Not much else is known about the story except that it was written »
