Jerzy Skolimowski's best known films are likely those he was a writer on and of these none is better known than Roman Polanski's Knife in the Water, a great thriller that was like Dead Calm but 27 years earlier and not actually rubbish. Amongst his work as director are two films from the 70s that I found quite lastingly disturbing since my youth, the supernatural horror film The Shout and obsession thriller Deep End. More recently, you likely saw him acting in Eastern Promises, where he played Stepan, or Mars Attacks or Before Night Falls where he had smaller roles. I'm glad to report that Jerzy Skolimowski is back on location in director mode and shooting his next film right now. The Essence of Killing "follows the story of a Taliban member who lives in Afghanistan, kills three American soldiers and then is taken captive by the Americans. He »

Roman Polanski has launched a .1 million suit against the paparazzi for apparently invading his privacy while he is confined in his Swiss chalet.
The filmmaker, 76, is currently on house arrest in Switzerland awaiting possible deportation to the U.S. for his over three-decade charge of having unlawful sex with a minor.
His lawyers filed a suit in Paris, claiming his family has been harassed by the photographers in their Alpine chalet.
According to the Academy Award-winning director's legal team, he still has a right to privacy, especially since he is staying with his wife and their children.

Fugitive director Roman Polanski, 76, has launched a legal action against photographers, alleging invasion of privacy. Polanski is under house arrest at his chalet in the Swiss resort town of Gstaad after handing over $4.5 million in cash bail to Swiss authorities who arrested him in September. Polanski is suing members of the paparazzi in a French court to the tune of £700,000, Britain's Daily Telegraph reports. They have taken photos of his family on public land outside the chalet. His lawyers claim that although Polanski is on bail, he is entitled to privacy. He is wanted in the Us on 30-year-old child sex charges and the Swiss are weighing up a Us request for his »

Roman Polanski wants his day in court.
Perhaps emboldened by recent legal victories – or simply feeling his dark powers return with the setting sun – the director has lashed out against the photographers that have been camped out in front of the Gstaad chalet where he's spending his house arrest.
Britain’s Telegraph newspaper reports that the auteur has filed a $1.11-million lawsuit in Paris against the photogs for invasion of privacy.

Celebrity photographer Bob Willoughby has died, aged 82.
Willoughby, who photographed Audrey Hepburn, Roman Polanski and Mia Farrow, Frank Sinatra, Dustin Hoffman, and many others on Hollywood movie sets, lost his battle with cancer on 18 December at his home in Vence, in the South of France.
In the early 1950s he began photographing jazz musicians in California clubs, notably Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan.
He became well known in Hollywood after Warner Brothers asked him to photograph Judy Garland on the set of her 1954 film A Star Is Born. The iconic photo later landed the cover of Life magazine.
Willoughby also created lasting images of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor on the set of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Jane Fonda at work on Klute, Hepburn on Roman Holiday, and Sinatra, whom he photographed with the Rat Pack in front of the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas during the filming of Ocean’s Eleven.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy, his sons Christopher, Stephen and David, a daughter, Catherine, and eight grandchildren. »

Filmmaker Roman Polanski has thanked fans for their support as he battles extradition to the Us to face sentencing over a 1977 child sex charge. The Rosemary's Baby director pleaded guilty to bedding a 13-year-old girl but fled to France before he could be sentenced. He was detained in Zurich in September 2009 and kept behind bars until earlier this month. He is now under house arrest at a ski chalet in Switzerland as he waits for officials to decide in January 2010 whether they will agree to the extradition request. Now he's released his first public statement since he was held, crediting letters of encouragement from supporters with helping him cope with the ongoing ordeal. »

"Fundamental fairness and justice in our criminal justice system are far more important than the conviction and sentence of any one individual." - California Court of Appeal, Polanski v. Superior Court of Los Angeles County, 12/21/09 Demonstrating the same lack of self-esteem as prisoners who beat up child molesters, noisy segments of the American population continue to hyperventilate over Roman Polanski as if the sexual abuse of minors were not already sufficiently condemned by our society. Among those who believe there is compelling evidence Polanski committed the various offenses (such as rape, sodomy and furnishing a minor with drugs) he was initially charged with, few express criticism of the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for its decision not to prosecute the defendant for those alleged crimes. Instead, the mob irrationally directs its wrath almost exclusively at Polanski, even though he »

We are leaving Kubrick behind and fast approaching Hyams. If you get that reference, go grab yourself a cookie. It is time for us to reflect back on the decade that was. Helpless minds that stray in a direction far from its capable mass and souls that get eaten away by an urge that’s far more grateful than what it can handle: Four people, all dealing with these difficulties, plan to capture and secure the American Dream; fame and fortune. These four people – boyfriend and girlfriend (Jared Leto and Jennifer Connolly) who are drug addicts, their friend who’s both seller and addict (Marlon Wayans) and Leto’s mother (Ellen Burnstein) who’s losing her grip on reality – all have in mind that the American dream should be spoon-fed to them. Dreams that include being on television, owning a fashion shop and living like rock-stars are all bogged down by each of the dreamer’s economic situation or their appearance. »

In a letter to French author Bernard-Henri Lévi, reprinted by the Huffington Post, comes the first words from director Roman "The Tenant" Polanski since his recent legal problems :
"...I have been overwhelmed by the number of messages of support and sympathy I have received in Winterthur prison, and that I continue to receive here, in my chalet in Gstaad, where I am spending the holidays with my wife and my children.
These messages have come from my neighbors, from people all over Switzerland, and from beyond Switzerland -- from across the world.
I would like every one of them to know how heartening it is, when one is locked up in a cell, to hear this murmur of human voices and of solidarity in the morning mail.
In the darkest moments, each of their notes has been a source of comfort and hope, and they continue to be so in my current situation. »
