Movie Preview: Armored (2009) Starring Matt Dillon, Laurence Fishburne, Jean Reno, Columbus Short

12 December 2009 11:54 PM, PST | ScreenStar | See recent ScreenStar news »

Fifty-one minutes. That's all the time they have to steal forty-two million dollars. A fool proof plan -- except that fool proof plans rarely are. In the film "Armored," six armored truck drivers attempt to fake their own hijacking, until things go wrong. Very wrong. And six lives are changed forever. As past heist-gone-wrong movies have played out, Armored (2009) involves five veteran drivers who try to convince rookie Ty Hackett, played by Columbus Short, to join them in a plot to rob their own company. Hackett, a young Gulf War veteran who's shell-shocked and short on money, faces the usual good vs. evil dilemma and engages in a game of mental ping-pong to see which side will win. He ultimately decides to go along with the bad guys, after they promise that no one gets hurt. When the plan goes awry and takes a violent turn, Ty must make another decision -- stay, »

'Armored Star' Matt Dillon Praises The Talents Of Director Nimród Antal

8 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

If you haven't been tuned in already, Nimród Antal is a name you're going to be hearing a lot more of in the future. The director is in the midst of steering "Predators," the Robert Rodriguez-produced reboot of the classic alien franchise, toward the big screen.

While shooting on that sci-fi flick continues, Antal's latest movie, the heist flick "Armored" arrived in theaters last Friday. In a recent conversation, star Matt Dillon, who plays an armored car security guard who finds himself in the middle of a high stakes robbery, couldn't stop singing the praises of his up-and-coming director.

"Nimród seems to be a real master," Dillon said. "I enjoyed filming primarily because Nimród is really good. You know you're in good hands. It's not just about action, but there's character development and strong performances."

Those performances come curtsey of vets like Dillon, Laurence Fishburne and Jean Reno, who »

Armored

8 December 2009 12:50 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Armored

Directed by: Nimrod Antal

Cast: Columbus Short, Matt Dillon, Laurence Fishburne

Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: December 4, 2009

Plot: A tightly knit group of armored truck drivers (Dillon, Fishburne, etc.) plot to steal the $42 million dollars that they are in charge of transporting. An Iraqi War veteran (Short) new to the security guard brotherhood attempts to shut them down.

Who’S It For?: The cast is mostly older men, so that cuts a lot of demographics out easily. Of the remaining possible candidates, they have to be really forgiving of boring action movies to not regret this one.

Expectations: This humdinger from the future director of the new Predator movie had been bumped around a few times. A revealing trailer began playing what seemed likely every film possible almost a year ago, with hope continually dwindling that this would be worth it.

[Exclusive Interview] Columbus Short on Armored

7 December 2009 2:32 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

When I hopped on the phone with Columbus Short I didn’t know what to expect. The only film I had seen him in was Cadillac Records — nothing else. So it was quite a nice surprise that the interview ended up going as well as it did. Columbus was extremely friendly and it became one of those interviews where it felt more so like a conversation. After being in a series of films as a side character, he’s finally now headlining his own film with Armored. While I haven’t got a chance to see it yet, I’m looking forward to it. Considering it’s from Nimrod Antal, the man behind Kontroll and the upcoming Predator remake, it will most likely be worthwhile. Armored is now in theaters.

Can you first talk about how you got involved? Did they chase you down for it or did you go after the role? »

Armored Reviews

6 December 2009 3:11 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Armored had a delayed release date and then was not screened for critics, but it apparently isn't nearly as bad as those things typically suggest.

"...a solid heist flick elevated by its ensemble cast and the visual eye of Hungarian-born director Nimrod Antal (Kontroll)."

— Glenn Whipp, Los Angeles Times

"...a western with an urban tint..."

— Simon Abrams, Slant Magazine

"...one predictable and forgettable movie that should consider itself very lucky not to have gone straight to DVD."

— Clark Collis, Entertainment Weekly

"...an unabashed B movie: basic, brutal and sometimes clumsy, but far from dumb, and not bad at all."

— A. O. Scott, New York Times

"...a 90-minute slot-filler so simple, generic, and blandly proficient that the reels might as well come delivered in a brown paper sack."

— Scott Tobias, Onion Av Club

Armored Review

6 December 2009 1:13 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Short Version: The good news is: If you like to walk in, sit down and enjoy an action film, then Armored is for you. The bad news is: If you’ve seen the trailer, then you can walk in 45 minutes late and not miss a thing.

Screen Rant’s Paul Young reviews Armored

Every once in a while a movie comes out of nowhere that totally catches me by surprise. Black Dog, Hard Rain and Deep Rising are still three of my favorite mid-budget action flicks that got very little advertising or respect but managed to be very enjoyable in the theaters. All three also made into my DVD library – and now Armored will join them on my shelf.

There are some minor spoilers in the following review.

Nimrod Antal, the guy directing Predators, has done a very good job of making Armored fun and interesting without blowing it way over-the-top. »

'Armored' Movie delivered a lot of action & edge of your seat drama. Screen Gems released it's new action/thriller flick, "Armored," this weekend. It was a lot better than I thought it would be. It had some great intense action scenes. It stars: Matt Dillon, Jean Reno, Laurence Fishburne, Skeet Ulrich, Amaury Nolasco, Andre Jamal Kinney, Milo Ventimiglia, Fred Ward, and Columbus Short "Armored" mainly focused around Columbus Short's character, Ty Hackett. He served in the army, and his parents had just recently died, leaving him with a burdening double mortgage and a younger teenage brother to take care of. He's now working as a guard for a an armored truck security company, transporting currency. King of cool

Jacques Audiard's new prison thriller is the most stylish film to come out of Europe for years, following up on the promise of his previous movies Read My Lips and The Beat that My Heart Skipped and confirming his place among the greats of French cinema. Jason Solomons talks to a director who wants his audience to fly with him

Jacques Audiard wears a hat. It's a trilby that, the 57-year-old director says, keeps him warm in the winter and cool in the summer. He was wearing it in the heat of Cannes last May when I first met him, on a blazing roof terrace; and he's wearing it again today, in London, on an autumnal Monday when I catch him smoking his pipe outside the hotel where we're due to meet.

With horn-rimmed glasses, smart jacket and a cravat, he looks a bit like an English gentleman, a »

Review: Armored

5 December 2009 12:10 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Armored is easily one of the dullest action films I’ve ever seen in my entire life. The story is bland, the characters are uninteresting and worst of all, it’s just plain lazy. Armored is about a young war veteran Ty (Columbus Short), and his younger brother Jimmy (Andre Kinney), who’s parents have passed away in the last year. Ty has taken it upon himself to get a job and take care of his younger broth. Ty’s job is that of an armored truck guard. He helps move large amounts of money from one place to another. He got the job because his father worked at the company, Eagle Shield Security, as does his godfather Mike (Matt Dillon). The biggest problem in Ty’s life is that he’s just not making enough money and the bank is threatening to take his house.

Interview: Columbus Short Lets Down His Guard in ‘Armored’

4 December 2009 4:17 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Meeting with Columbus Short is encountering a true force of nature. Focused, intent and with a varied perspective, this up-and-coming young actor and performer has the centerpiece role in the new film, “Armored.”

Columbus plays Ty Hackett, an Iraq War veteran who takes a job with an armored car company to care for his 14 year-old brother after their parents die. After going through initial training, an obsessive co-worker reveals a surefire way to stage a robbery and split the cash among all the participants.

Ty is initially reluctant to join in, but the financial pressures eventually allow him to relent. The pick-up of the cash goes smoothly, but an unexpected interruption throws the operation into a tailspin. What happens next becomes more than the money, and has implications that will change everyone involved.

Plot: A rookie armored car guard (Columbus Short), is pitted against his colleagues (Matt Dillon, Lawrence Fishburne, Jean Reno, Skeet Ulrich, & Amaury Nolasco), when a heist the crew plans goes wrong. Review: Armored is yet another Screen Gems production that.s not screening for critics. I don.t really get this whole practice. Sure, Armored.s no Oscar winner, or even a particularly good film, but it.s a decent enough potboiler that it probably won.t get savaged by the press- and »

‘Armored’ Movie Got A Couple Of Good Reviews Despite Critic Shutout

4 December 2009 11:32 AM, PST | OnTheFlix | See recent OnTheFlix news »

"Armored" movie got a couple of good reviews despite critic shutout. Apparently Screen Gems shut most of the movie critics out from pre-screening their new action/thriller flick, "Armored." However, a couple of critics did get a chance to watch it,and post some reviews. They turned out to be pretty good. It hit theaters today, and it stars : Matt Dillon, Jean Reno, Laurence Fishburne, Skeet Ulrich, Amaury Nolasco, Andre Jamal Kinney, Milo Ventimiglia, Fred Ward, and Columbus Short. Brian Orndorf of Brianorndorf.com gave it 3 stars out of 4. He said, "Armored" isn't the most logical cinematic submission of the year, but I'm not sure I would want it to be." Emanuel Levy from Emanuellevy.com gave 2 and a half stars out of 4. He stated, "A minor, unspectacular, utterly forgettable flick when it's over, "Armored" is nevertheless outrageously entertaining, serving a living proof that there is still juice to »

Crowded Weekend At Box Office

4 December 2009 11:22 AM, PST | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

Four films open wide at the box office this weekend, but each of them faces tough competition from several films that are already there -- especially The Twilight Saga: New Moon, The Blind Side, Disney's A Christmas Carol and 2012. They also will come up against Paramount's Up in the Air, which is opening in limited release in 14 markets. On Thursday the National Board of Review named it the best film of the year. Of the newcomers, Jim Sheridan's Brothers, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire is given the best chance of breaking out. Also opening this weekend is the Robert De Niro-Drew Barrymore comedy Everybody's Fine, the action flick Armored, starring Matt Dillon, Jean Reno and Laurence Fishburne, and the vampire spoof Transylmania. The latter two films were not screened in advance for critics. »

This Week’s Reject Report is Heavily Armored

3 December 2009 10:04 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Welcome to what looks to be a quiet and subdued weekend here at the Reject Report. We have three movies going into wide release -- Armored, Brothers and Everybody's Fine -- but they aren't exactly blanketing the theaters all over North America. It is sure shaping up as being another showdown between The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Blind Side for the box office title. Looking first at Armored, which rolls out in just under 2,000 locations, we have Matt Dillon, Laurence Fishburne, Jean Reno and Skeet Ulrich starring in a movie which according to their official website, is about a band of officers at an armored transport security firm who "risk their lives when they embark on the ultimate heist... against their own company." There is an audience out there for a movie like this, but I don't think we're looking at a big haul here. I would say this movie would make $8 million. Watch »

5 Movie Clips from Armored

2 December 2009 6:54 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Armored may not a blockbuster extravaganza filled with Hollywood’s biggest stars, but from what I’ve seen, it looks like a tight little action-thriller and that’s good enough for me.  I am hoping it’s good because you don’t want this film to be a travesty and then face the fact that director Nimrod Antal is going to be making Predators.  Still, I have faith and hopefully these five new clips from the film will inspire some faith in you as well.

Hit the jump to check out the clips along with a brief synopsis.  Armored hits theaters on December 4th.

For those just tuning in, here’s a brief synopsis:

A crew of armored truck guards execute a meticulously planned robbery of their own security firm, but when their seemingly foolproof plan unravels, the men turn against each other as they desperately try to save themselves. »
