Give ‘em Hell Malone (2009) Movie Review

10 hours ago | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Russell Mulcahy’s “Give’em Hell Malone” is one of those anachronistic film noir filled with characters more appropriate in ‘40s and ‘50s detective movies featuring heroes with names like Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe. As the film opens, Thomas Jane’s Malone, a private dick with a very big gun that he brandishes expertly, is killing his way through a hotel full of bad guys to get to a metallic case that he has been sent to retrieve. Shot up to hell and back, but still alive, our hero seeks out some answers from his handler Murphy (Leland Orser), eventually discovering that they were both hired by the vivacious lady in red Evelyn (Elsa Pataky). Meanwhile, crime boss Whitmore (Gregory Harrison) dispatches his best enforcer, the brute with a heart of gold Boulder (Ving Rhames) and some other dangerous killers to take back the suitcase by all means necessary. »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

13 hours ago | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

Review: Did you ever see… Out of Sight?

3 December 2009 12:38 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

This week sees the release of Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air. Starring George Clooney, it tells the story of a frequent flyer executive who is unexpectedly grounded. The jump from TV to film is never easy, even for those well suited to the movie business. Clooney had a couple of false starts, but that was down to quality of scripts more than it was a reflection on the ER star’s performance.

He began with a great turn in From Dusk ’til Dawn, then had to grin and bare it through One Fine Day and The Peacemaker (and don’t get me started on Batman and Robin). That’s when the perfect role came along, one that would set his career on an upward flight, and introduce him to a man who would have great influence on his Hollywood career. The man was director Steven Soderbergh, the movie was Out of Sight. »

Top Ten Tuesday: George Clooney

1 December 2009 3:52 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

From humble beginnings in films like Return To Horror High and Return Of The Killer Tomatoes, a two-time “Sexiest Man Alive”, four-time Academy Award nominee (so far), and one-time winner of Best Supporting Actor (so far) was born.  George Clooney’s career has been a long and winding road in both film and television.  Today, he takes all roles from absolutely serious (Syriana) to comical (Leatherheads) to downright silly cameos (South Park: Bigger, Longer, And Uncut and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over).  It is for this eclectic mix of performances and characters that we salute this week the top 10 of George Clooney.  Whether it is his performance or the roles themselves he brings to life, each character listed below is memorable in their own right.  And, with films like Up In The Air and The American forthcoming, we are sure to see even more memorable characters brought to life by Clooney. »

New Ultra-Gory Pics from Piranha 3D

10 November 2009 10:26 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

When I first heard that Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Haute Tension) was writing and directing a remake of the classic 70’s Joe Dante film Piranha, I thought “Hmmm. This could be a good thing.” Then I read that he was doing it in 3D and I thought “Dang! I thought this could be a good thing; guess I was wrong.”

The remake, cleverly titled Piranha 3D, is set in the fictional location of Lake Victoria during spring break (think Lake Havasu), and after a underwater earthquake releases a prehistoric flesh-eating fish, “an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor-toothed residents.” Sherriff Julie Forester must risk all that she loves and knows to destroy the piranha “save the lake and her family from totally being devoured.”

Piranha 3D stars Elizabeth Shue as Sherriff Julie Forester, along with Steve R. »

The Tournament (Film Review)

7 November 2009 11:05 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Every seven years, 30 of the world’s most deadly assassins take over a random city and compete for a ten million dollar prize.  The rules are simple.  The contestants have twenty-four hours to be the sole survivor, if not a tracking device implanted in their abdomen will detonate.  Let the game begin.

If you’re a fan of action blockbusters like Transporter or Crank than The Tournament should excite you.  The film is ninety minutes of explosions, slow-motion, 300-style fight sequences, and shoot-em-up action.  But what really sets The Tournament apart from most films in this genre is the gratuitous gore, hence the appeal to fright fans.   There are plenty of exploding heads/dismemberments and because the tournament takes place in a random city, there is no shortage of civilian casualties.  The body count is high and unlike cartoonish films like Transformers, the mayhem is bloody and visceral.

But if you’re like me, »
